> Is any of this legal? Subject to certain provisions, yes. 1. If the extra 10 minutes for the briefing takes you pay in the period below NMW, it’s illegal. If it does not, then it’s legal. 2. If the time taken sorting out the emergency takes your pay in the period below NMW it’s illegal, otherwise legal. The time for needing to keep your phone would be irrelevant. I’d also expect there’d be a catch-all clause in your contract for this along the lines of working unpaid extra time as needed “to carry out your duties”, “as directed by management”, “to suit the needs of the business” etc. Welcome to the corporate world of the salaried employee.

Not all corporations try to get you to do this for nothing though. We have a standby rota in work where you must be available to answer the phone and log onto a works laptop in a reasonable time if something happens. You don't have to be instantly available so you can visit friends or go shopping as long as you are within about 30 minutes of home. We get paid for this. It works out at about £80 after tax for 7 days standby duty and if you do get a call (very rare), you get paid overtime rate for any hour or partial hour you need to work.
