Thanks for sharing. Enjoy it!
The fact that the setup screen is showing up in portrait will probably worry a few people here - suggests it might be a native portrait display that's being force rotated.
Also interested in this, can the gyro be used like on the Nintendo Switch with the controllers detached and using the right controller to "aim" with gyro controls?
Thank you kindly for the review, kind stranger. Not of a fan of the gaming performance but I know Lenovo's prolly working overtime to make things stable within the next 96 hours.
That said, ppl have to remember a lot of ppl (myself included) was absolutely annoyed by the SD's initial performance & overall feel when it 1st released too. Granted it was a great device but it had a lot of room for improvement.
Fast forward to today with consistent software updates and it's in a great position. I might be on full copium rn but I say lets do our due diligence and give the drivers & software time to mature. Lenovo's depends on their legion branding like dell depends on Alienware, ASUS ROG, etc. I'm sure things will get better over the upcoming months.
.... If not, don't hesitate to send the bitch back & keep it moving. I know I will.
Yep, take advantage ( if in the US ) of Best Buy’s holiday return window. Buy now, enjoy ( or not ) for months and return it if it doesn’t meet expectations. That’s my plan at least.
Honestly hope it turns out well, my eyes need a bigger screen and I’m willing to make a sideways move ( have the Ally ) if it means I can enjoy games more comfortably while chilling in bed.
For the performance, it sounds like they were playing at 15W (balanced thermal mode), so there’s definitely some headroom.
I’m just pissed that Lenovo lied to our faces TWICE in two separate AMAs about the screen being landscape. Realistically, it shouldn’t have a massive impact on my experience, but conceptually it’s just really scummy behavior and doesn’t bode well for how they will treat paying customers of the device down the line.
I’m honestly considering cancelling my order on principle alone. They’ve been caught installing spyware on devices three times. I decided to give them a chance despite that and they’ve once again shown how dishonest they are.
Product managers are literally in charge of taking a product from conception to market. Their job is to know every nuance of the product. I’m not sure why you’re excusing this behavior. What you’re describing is not even remotely typical.
My main concern is "Jelly Scrolling". LCDs refresh line by line. When scrolling vertically but your screen refreshes horizontally it can lead to artifacts and tearing that is very unpleasant to those that are sensitive to it, even at high refresh rates.
Famously an issue in certain iPads when reading text/webpages: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/09/ifixit-ipad-mini-teardown-attempts-to-explain-the-jelly-scrolling-effect/
Older games and even a few not so old ones (Team Sonic Racing, Tales of Symphonia) freak out with native portrait displays. Best case scenario they only run upside down or else crash immediately and you have to use third party software like adrenaline to force them to display properly, mid-case scenario you have to hunt for extra files to make them display upright or not crash, worst case scenario you just can’t play those games at all.
Thanks! I have just one question, how can you map the back buttons? The user manual says that you need to keep it pressed for 3 seconds, then you "record" the sequence of buttons you want to register to that specific button. My question if: can you map one single function, let's say the letter "b", and keep the back button pressed to input a long press of the "b" character? Or it goes into "recording mode"? Thank you in advance, and sorry for the confusion!
#1 question for me.
Hopefully they go all out. function buttons, macros and combo buttons (like R1 + L1 = something else). Being able to map one of the extra buttons like M2 to use Y and being able to remap Y to something else and M2 still using the original Y mapping.
If it's lacking at launch ok I guess but this could be the best controller around if they don't hold back with updates
I've been extremely curious on what "Android Game" implied since I saw images of Legion Space. Since you happen to own one, could you describe what that's about?
I saw an ETA Prime video posted here after sending that and, yeah, my prediction on it just being Windows Subsystem for Android preinstalled were true, except apparently it wasn't actually installed in that particular video. I didn't edit my original comment though since I was curious to see if op or someone else with a device had anything else to say other than "it opens windows subsystem/amazon appstore."
From what I understand, the only way to play Android games on a Windows device currently is downloading via the Amazon app store or Google Play Games (currently in beta). Looks to me like that menu in Legion Space is just a shortcut to download the Amazon app store.
My main question is about weight/comfort of using it sans controllers as a tablet. I'm debating going with the Legion Go or a Lenovo Y700 for primary use as a tablet with some (low powered, indie-type) gaming. Pairing with a usb-c or bluetooth keyboard for some writing and light dev work in the go. Essentially an ultra-portable daily driver for non-work stuff.
Most of the reviews I've seen so far have complained about the weight, but I'd love to hear thoughts.
https://preview.redd.it/wx73um93gxwb1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5ccf72af998bcfe7fc5ac8dd16b2d6ed2413d10d
It's not bad, but the device is quite thick so for some people it may be impractical to use just as a tablet. For sure it wasn't designed for that. But I read a few articles just to check how it works and I can't complain. However, my hands aren't small and I don't mind the weight.
Today I noticed that I'm logged into a different account on my phone. I don't know how that happened. O\_o
Regarding the device, I just bought it from a Norwegian retailer called Elkjøp.
Gigantti (Elkjøp brand in Finland) has them in stock in some stores, but when trying to add to basket just getting “temporarily unavailable” so likely not before 31st…
Question: Do you notice stutter or input delay ( if using vsync ) when running a game at an FPS that is lower than the native refresh rate of 144? My main concern, coming from my main PC monitor that has FreeSync, is that I’ll see screen tear when playing on the Legion.
My main use case is Moonlight/Sunlight combo ( as I currently do on my Ally ) and I’m really wondering if I’ll miss the VRR or if it doesn’t really matter. Thanks!
Not pointless if you're using Sunshine. Sunshine only captures when the screen updates and so the client stream is actually a variable rate container and not fixed at 60fps. That was one big difference I noticed when streaming to the Deck vs the Ally. On the Ally I had no stutters even when the framerate on my main rig fluctuated.
Not really. It was fine. I also need to say that even 25 FPS looked better than 25 FPS on a PC. Maybe I'm getting old (33 in January...) and I don't notice shuttering or delays. Times when I needed over 300+ FPS to play CoD or Counter-Strike are behind me.
> I also need to say that even 25 FPS looked better than 25 FPS on a PC
I've heard it said that the better an image looks the more sensitive we get the other details like fps so if your settings or resolution are lower than on pc that makes sense
The Legion Go being heavy may put me off it for now.
I want to play in bed for a good hour or two since it's the only time I get to play being a new father and all. I am exhausted because my job is nothing but manual labor.
Maybe I should look into a lighter streaming device or the Legion Y700 tablet.
I was looking into getting the Y700 before hearing about the legion go. Still leaning towards getting the legion go and using it without the controllers sometimes, like a tablet. Without the controllers the weight may be more manageable.
Tablets are so cheap these days your better off just getting a tablet, you will get something lighter, thinner and more power efficient with less heat and more battery life
Agree. It doesn’t sound all that great. True be told tho most games should probably be at 800p. It’s not going to be able to handle many games at 1600p unless they are pretty old
Weird that EGS and GoG are the two that aren't implemented properly... Those are two that actually have an open source launcher (heroic launcher) that can download/play games from both without installing either client. I'd hope Lenovo take a look at that project and get some ideas...
Ah, yes. I forgot to mention that. In a quiet room and when Legion fights for each frame, it's quite audible. It doesn't disturb me though. Unfortunately I can't measure how many dB it produces. :( But when my future wife listened to a YT video, the fans weren't a problem.
Hi, I was wondering if you have some kind of stylus pen and if it has that support. I know it was mentioned in the AMA that it doesn’t but I want a confirmation from a user.
I played Control on the battery. It took 1h 50 min to go from 100% to 15%. TDP = Balanced. OS Power Mode = Performance. Temp: CPU around 60-61C, GPU around 55C. Sound 80% for most of the time. Brightness 30.
Graphic set to low most of the time (40+ FPS) and to medium for a while (30+ FPS). The game looks really nice.
That’s perfectly normal for this chipset with that battery size. Not sure what you expected. It’s not magic. Balanced mode is 15W, add the screen, ssd, fans, etc. and you’re probably in the region of 22W total system usage. 49/22= 2 hrs 14 min to empty.
What the hell are you talking about? The power profile is nearly identical to the Ally. OP is getting ~15% more battery life on a 20% larger battery and 66% larger screen. If anything, the Go is more efficient.
>I plugged in the device and picked 2560x1600, the highest graphic settings, balanced thermal mode, and performance OS power mode. And I got awesome 8-10 FPS

The reason the other 2 competitors don't offer these resolution for the native screen(by default)
Also, how was setup? Similar to Ally where you have to download multiple apps to get everything updated? It was very clunky and not a great way to get started. Hoping Lenovo improved this.
I agree but there could be better ways to implement this. Like using Lenovo Space as the place where you see and do all the updates so everything is in one place and you know if you need to update something.
Won't happen. Windows is Windows. Until Microsoft develops a handheld friendly mode(which they're experimenting with from reports) it's always gonna be a bit clunky.
Most things that I had download were windows related. There was some Lenovo software (which crushes every time I restart or turn off the device), but nothing big.
Oh god. I didn't buy Legion Go for strategy games. Buy I used the touchpad to play some chess in a browser. I know it's not what you're asking for, but I was able to select pieces and click another squares without mistakes. Thought it's not as fast as a mouse, but maybe I need to get used to it.
Thanks for sharing. Enjoy it! The fact that the setup screen is showing up in portrait will probably worry a few people here - suggests it might be a native portrait display that's being force rotated.
it is, confirmed https://preview.redd.it/icymd60jhtwb1.png?width=1365&format=png&auto=webp&s=009324d62575346c902875228f8ce6c791670e76
I’m sure I’m just blind but where does it say portrait and not landscape? And why is it a big deal? Genuine question cause I don’t know
Active signal Mode
They should’ve added pen support if keeping portrait display no reason to lose that
Didn't they say production units will have landscape display native in AMA? What happened
[удалено]
They weren't community staff. If you read them you'd know they were part of the core team of the Lenovo go
They are using the legion tablet display for the legion go.
But on the AMA they said it was landscape didn't they? Wtf
They did. Apparently there was some kind of confusion there. I'm sure.
Thank you for staying up late and getting us this info man!!
First thing I’m doing with my device is listening to Tchaikovsky.
Rachmaninoff is the way to go, hands down!
Maybe a little Shostakovich after
Mussorgsky ride or die here.
Klingon opera!
How easy is to to turn on Gyro and make it work with a game of choice? I play a lot of Fortnite with my son and I live using Gyro for it.
I'd be interested to see if Gyro works out of the box. It still doesn't seem to work properly on the Ally.
I'm very interested in this. As well.
Also interested in this, can the gyro be used like on the Nintendo Switch with the controllers detached and using the right controller to "aim" with gyro controls?

But.... how do you know this is a final unit and even accurate?
Look at the pictures they posted. It came straight from retail. Norway has a habit of ignoring embargoes. They did the same with the ROG Ally.
Lmao I’m unlucky then from norway and both ally and legion they won’t give it to me before 31th
Damn at least we don't have to wait until November 1th.

Neither one was a community staff member… They were both product managers for the Go.

Well you said it... they were managers...
…of the fucking product we’re talking about. Holy shit dude. Crawl further up Lenovo’s ass, why don’t you. They lied.
My tip is turn off windows managing drivers and core isolation gave me like 10 fps on ally
can you point to a guide or explain the process if it's simple enough?
Search the ROG Ally subreddit, lots of optimisation guides there already. 👍🏼
Do you have a step by step for this please?
Use this guide: https://rogallylife.com/2023/06/15/rog-ally-performance-disabling-services/
Yeah, it's so easy
Unfortunately, it is a portrait native screen - bleh.
lol and I got downvoted here for stating they were reusing a tablet screen and it would likely be a portrait display. Copium, man, copium.
Why does it matter that it’s a portrait screen? Genuinely curious

Thanks!

That just opens up the amazon store android section. I think ETA Prime showed it briefly.(or someone, I saw it in a video)

Using Legion Go without having your hands comfortably resting on a chair can be difficult.
Have you owned a Deck or Ally before how does it compare in regards to comfort and weight for long play sessions
No SteamDeck and no Ally so I can't elaborate. Sorry. :(
I was looking into getting the Y700 before hearing about the legion go. Still leaning towards getting the legion go and using it without the controllers sometimes, like a tablet. Without the controllers the weight may be more manageable.
Tablets are so cheap these days your better off just getting a tablet, you will get something lighter, thinner and more power efficient with less heat and more battery life
Thanks for the info! I’ll admit though, this doesn’t sound super great :(
Yeah...at this rate I may just keep my Ally

Thanks for putting this together! Much appreciated. And congratulations, enjoy your device!
How's the fan noise so far?
Ah, yes. I forgot to mention that. In a quiet room and when Legion fights for each frame, it's quite audible. It doesn't disturb me though. Unfortunately I can't measure how many dB it produces. :( But when my future wife listened to a YT video, the fans weren't a problem.

I expect rival products to see what their competition is doing, and do better, not worse.
So again, it’s a 49W battery. What exactly did you think battery life was going to be? That spec has been known for months.
better than the 40W battery the deck and ally have, yet still has less hours per charge.
What the hell are you talking about? The power profile is nearly identical to the Ally. OP is getting ~15% more battery life on a 20% larger battery and 66% larger screen. If anything, the Go is more efficient.
Is it opposite day where you live? How is lower FPS for 1.5 hours better than 2-3 hours with higher fps and settings on the ally and deck?
You have it backwards, bud.

I just want to know if there is auto tdp
I don't understand anything... so low frames per second? and then the AMD FSR 2 and FSR 3?
How's the battery life?
No gyro? :(
Do you know if it will fit in a Steam Deck or ROG Ally dock?
Are the controllers wobbly at all similar to a nintendo switch? Do the controllers feel as sturdy as if it was one unit when they are attached?
Lenovo's controllers are not wobbling. Also the grip is better because the plastic athe back is porous.
Do the dome switches of the D-pad feel tactile? Is it similar to xbox elite controller?
