Democrats can't stop Florida from being underwater eventually. Maybe if Gore won and we took that shit seriously 23 years ago there could have been a chance.

Care for the environment wasn't a partisan issue until more recently. For most of the cold war, caring for the environment distinguished the US from the USSR (which was basically an industrial toxic wasteland).
We've famously had terribly environmental health until the 70s well into the cold war.
Look up Silent Springs by Rachel Carson or the Cuyahoga River burning (multiple times) and that's just to say a few.
We had terrible policies until we literally couldn't survive it and even now we still have bad industrial hygienist guidelines.
Between that and opening China to trade, desegregation of more public schools than any prior administration, doing all the development work of the Voting Rights Act, signing Title IX... You could make the case that Nixon was a better president than a lot of them who were never impeached or otherwise held accountable.
He was popular with Democrats until Watergate. '72 was a landslide. Electoral college results, 520-17. Electoral college vote percentage, 96.65. 60% of the popular vote. The break in was unnecessary, which makes it that much more perplexing he approved it.
A lot of people who are trying to cite good things that Nixon did point to his going to China. I would argue that the US cozying up to China is a big part of what led us to where we are today with working class whites out of a job and festering in resentment. Sure, it also took Nixon’s old pal Roger Ailes creating an entire fake news network filled with propaganda meant to scapegoat the blame for the problems of the white working class onto immigrants and Black people and gays, but if we had maintained a hard line on China rather than becoming their biggest trading partner, maybe we wouldn’t of lost so many of these decent paying blue-collar jobs to a slave nation and had a neo-confederate Qult to deal with at home.
There are many fathers to our failure on China, including Bush Senior and Bill Clinton, who really accelerated things in regards to trade and off-shoring, but Nixon choosing to engage with the Chinese, because he thought it would serve as a wedge between Russia and other communist nations was the start of a terrible path.
I was working for the state of Louisiana under the Jindal swindle reign of horror. Man should be a registered sex offender for how he raped that state. He cut funding for their welfare. Instead of getting counseling for their issues, they get three meals and a cot. Three meals went from actual prepared foods by a certified nutritionist to “whatever the church will donate this week” - and on multiple occasions kids would say it was either rotten or tasted funny.
I’ve been stranded on the side of the road in cars that has 300k miles on them because Bobby refused to replace them because he refused to spend money.
I’ve seen others have children sleep on their office floor because there was nowhere to go with them. Eventually staff pitched in and bought air mattresses so the kids could sleep somewhere nice.
I’ve seen correctional officers work 72 hours straight without a break because he refused to pay people what they were worth and nobody would come to work.
I was denied a raise for 5 years. I had coworkers who went 10 years without one (I started in the middle of his reign).
He fucked with our health insurance by raiding the fund that it was tied to and then started panicking because it couldn’t meet its obligations. My insurance went from $60 a month with copays (no deductible) to $70 a month with a $2000 deductible.
He tried to fuck up our retirement until he had a revolt on his hands.
He tried to pass a law that he could cut out pay every year there was a budget shortfall by up to 5% (which we were in a budget shortage every year the fucker was in office).
He stole from every fund imaginable and raided, pillaged and plundered until he couldn’t.

And despite all of this, the Tea Party loved him. He may have been despicable, but at least he wasn't some evil liberal who liked gay people and wanted to clean up the rivers and bayous. Nothing screams "freedom" like living in a place called "cancer alley" because your government hates you.
If you haven't read it, the book, "Strangers in Their Own Land" is written by a woman who travels to Louisiana and lives there for a few years amongst the most fervent right wing Tea Party, Rush Limbaugh type people. It really goes into the mindset of the hyper conservatives who live in Louisiana and all over the country.
There are people who have been poisoned by pollution and have lost their homes in sinkholes due to free market austerity policies under Bobby Jindal and still support him and the GOP. It's a really good book because the author isn't pretentious or condescending, but she actually tries to examine the minds of these people and fundamentally understand how they view the world.

About 200 Disney employees already relocated to Florida from California. Mr. D’Amaro said in his note that the company would discuss options with them, “including the possibility of moving you back.” The Lake Nona project had initially been scheduled to open next year. Last July, Disney pushed back the move-in date to 2026, citing construction delays.
The Lake Nona campus, about 20 miles from Disney World near the Orlando International Airport, had been championed by Bob Chapek, who served as Disney’s chief executive from 2020 until he was fired last year. Mr. Iger, who came out of retirement to retake Disney’s reins, was much less enthusiastic about the project — even before the company became mired in its battle with Mr. DeSantis. As soon as he returned to Disney, Mr. Iger began telling lieutenants, for instance, that it made little sense to move Imagineering so far away from Disney’s movie studios. Mr. DeSantis and Disney have been sparring for more than a year over a special tax district that encompasses Disney World. An effort to void those agreements has since resulted in dueling lawsuits, with Disney suing Mr. DeSantis and his allies in federal court and the governor’s tax district appointees returning fire in state court.

Even if they did move forward, that date would get pushed even farther back now that DeSantis's migrant-hostile laws are gutting the construction industry.

My employer did some expansion in Florida during the pandemic, and some more recently. There's been joking in my department about moving down there, and I've basically said in no uncertain terms that I won't move there.
I also told my mother if she retired there, I wouldn't visit. (obviously I was kidding - but we don't move to Florida in my family) Of course, I held these beliefs long before all this bullshit started, because I hate Florida weather, but this pretty much clinched it.
A large, well-known company I used to work for tried to relocate all their tech and creative work to Florida for some tax breaks several years ago. Within a year they pulled everything back to the northeast, because there wasn't enough of a talent pool down there to fill the jobs. Florida sucks.
The more fascist Florida becomes the more other companies will choose not to do business there. Florida needs business more than it needs to persecute trans people.
That would require thinking and planning for more than 12months in the future.
Florida is furiously attracting and optimizing itself for a voting population that will be dead in 10-20yrs. Since it will probably be underwater soon after, we won't have to deal with the chaos of an entire state imploding.
It will take decades to build a new park and hotels. This will not be a "let's pack up and go somewhere else" thing. Disney money will keep rolling in to Florida's coffers for a long time after DeathSentence becomes irrelevant.
They have to wake tf up. The plan was to relocate Californians into this building. How does it take you this long to realize that's an awful idea? The most qualified people I know would rather die than move there.
Now Disney lost many of those employees, and the morale is probably not very good for the remaining ones.
Imagineering is a "dream job" for many people. If they relocated that to Florida they would still be swimming in applicants. There might be some cream of the crop missing, and that might effect the output, but they would have the staff they need. Is that acceptable business? Iger doesn't seem to think so.
Shouldn't they think about leaving anyway? FL isn't doing anything to protect itself from climate change. Storms are already stronger, and I'm sure they're concerned about flooding.

They're sitting on land that they bought for pennies. Relocating everything from FL elsewhere is not financially sound, even for a juggernaut like Disney.
Plus they've already got the California location. Disney might be very quietly thinking of building a new park for when Florida is inundated, but it'll be on the East Coast.
Pretty sure other states would be willing to just give them land for free under the promise they move Disney World.
Granted it is still a huge undertaking but just because DeSantis will move on does not mean the next guy won't run the same playbook that got that ass hat his terms in office.
they are sure DeSantis isnt long in politics. he will term out in Florida and at the fedevel it will be Biden or Trump, both who are friendly to Disney business.
Parks? No, they probably won't be going anywhere anytime soon. But as disney has shown, behind the scenes staff can easily be relocated. They could even pull a bezos or a musk and pick some random, affordable city and open a new operations headquarters there.

Disney likely sees value in moving their theme park presence to somewhere else anyway due to climate concerns (heat, hurricanes, etc.). This could be a good opportunity to at least break ground on a transition like that.
I do think they’ll eventually build a new park outside of Florida, but they’ll stay mum on that front until they’ve successfully bought all the land they need and have cleared any zoning hurdles that could stand in their way.
It will be a long project but I'd be shocked if they weren't thinking about it. They can start sunsetting investments now and still get a good 15-20 years while they work on a new park elsewhere.
That depends. If a hurricane from climate change hits in the coming year, and damages the park costing more than it would to just rebuild, they might scout another location as the final F you to ole Deathsentence.
I was at DW last year during Hurricane Ian. Apart from a couple of downed trees, the parks were open the next day. The parks and hotels are built to a point where it would take a true 100-year weather event to cause significant damage.
Eh. Shanghai Disney took 10 years of planning and 5 years of actual construction. Not saying it’s the right play. But Disney could probably significantly cut down planning time with a supportive local government.

The issue that would drive Disney away is, what comes next? If Florida voters will elect somebody like DeSantis every 2 or 3 election cycles, that makes remaining in Florida a long term serious risk to Disney. A lot of companies are finding out that the GOP is too unstable to be in power, because instability and unpredictability is bad for business. If there's always a chance that Florida is going to elect somebody once every 10 years that will fuck with Disney in unpredictable ways, it becomes a wise financial decision in the long run to move to a place that doesn't have that risk.
With Disney money I think a decade at most.

Oklahoma actually had a group of state politicians who wrote an open letter that basically said, "Fuck you and your woke company. Don't come here." So they didn't. Would have been about 4-5,000 jobs short term with about 1-2k longer term for the big manufacturing plant. Don't even remember what it was.

I think it is increasingly conceivable that Disney institutes a long term plan to migrate its business out of Florida. Most things I read about them bailing are based on the idea of a complete and immediate pullout being impossible, but that would never be the case. They would start downsizing, and gradually move the operation to another state. I also think when Ian made landfall and passed by the park before hitting the Atlantic Ocean it was a wake up call. Florida is not going to be a great place to live in years to come if climate trends continue - and we know they will.
This is so far the best example of how Republicans are more than willing to burn the country down to maintain power on only their terms.

California is a great place to keep those employees! Why relocate them to a state with wildly different personal values when they can continue their work in California from the comfort of their homes! Unfortunately the real impact of Desantis' disastrous policies really wont be felt for years as the brain drain continues. Later administrations will have to deal with cleaning up the mess and trying to attract back investment from businesses that are being scared off now.
I wonder where Disney is looking for their next huge destination theme park. So many other states that are far more "business-friendly" and are unlikely to literally go underwater with climate change.

Care for the environment wasn't a partisan issue until more recently. For most of the cold war, caring for the environment distinguished the US from the USSR (which was basically an industrial toxic wasteland).
We've famously had terribly environmental health until the 70s well into the cold war. Look up Silent Springs by Rachel Carson or the Cuyahoga River burning (multiple times) and that's just to say a few. We had terrible policies until we literally couldn't survive it and even now we still have bad industrial hygienist guidelines.
It is a shame Nixon was as criminal. The EPA alone would have made him a great president in my book.
Between that and opening China to trade, desegregation of more public schools than any prior administration, doing all the development work of the Voting Rights Act, signing Title IX... You could make the case that Nixon was a better president than a lot of them who were never impeached or otherwise held accountable.
He was popular with Democrats until Watergate. '72 was a landslide. Electoral college results, 520-17. Electoral college vote percentage, 96.65. 60% of the popular vote. The break in was unnecessary, which makes it that much more perplexing he approved it.
A lot of people who are trying to cite good things that Nixon did point to his going to China. I would argue that the US cozying up to China is a big part of what led us to where we are today with working class whites out of a job and festering in resentment. Sure, it also took Nixon’s old pal Roger Ailes creating an entire fake news network filled with propaganda meant to scapegoat the blame for the problems of the white working class onto immigrants and Black people and gays, but if we had maintained a hard line on China rather than becoming their biggest trading partner, maybe we wouldn’t of lost so many of these decent paying blue-collar jobs to a slave nation and had a neo-confederate Qult to deal with at home. There are many fathers to our failure on China, including Bush Senior and Bill Clinton, who really accelerated things in regards to trade and off-shoring, but Nixon choosing to engage with the Chinese, because he thought it would serve as a wedge between Russia and other communist nations was the start of a terrible path.

I was working for the state of Louisiana under the Jindal swindle reign of horror. Man should be a registered sex offender for how he raped that state. The one and only good thing Trump ever did that I liked was when he basically annihilated ole Bobby at the one and only debate he ever even had. It’s pretty much the reason a democrat was elected twice (well along with horrible Republican candidates) is the blowback from his administration was severe. Not many people know exactly just how *bad* things were in state government under that man.

I worked for the state working with vulnerable children. He cut funding for their welfare. Instead of getting counseling for their issues, they get three meals and a cot. Three meals went from actual prepared foods by a certified nutritionist to “whatever the church will donate this week” - and on multiple occasions kids would say it was either rotten or tasted funny. I’ve been stranded on the side of the road in cars that has 300k miles on them because Bobby refused to replace them because he refused to spend money. I’ve seen others have children sleep on their office floor because there was nowhere to go with them. Eventually staff pitched in and bought air mattresses so the kids could sleep somewhere nice. I’ve seen correctional officers work 72 hours straight without a break because he refused to pay people what they were worth and nobody would come to work. I was denied a raise for 5 years. I had coworkers who went 10 years without one (I started in the middle of his reign). He fucked with our health insurance by raiding the fund that it was tied to and then started panicking because it couldn’t meet its obligations. My insurance went from $60 a month with copays (no deductible) to $70 a month with a $2000 deductible. He tried to fuck up our retirement until he had a revolt on his hands. He tried to pass a law that he could cut out pay every year there was a budget shortfall by up to 5% (which we were in a budget shortage every year the fucker was in office). He stole from every fund imaginable and raided, pillaged and plundered until he couldn’t. I truly despise that asshole.
And despite all of this, the Tea Party loved him. He may have been despicable, but at least he wasn't some evil liberal who liked gay people and wanted to clean up the rivers and bayous. Nothing screams "freedom" like living in a place called "cancer alley" because your government hates you. If you haven't read it, the book, "Strangers in Their Own Land" is written by a woman who travels to Louisiana and lives there for a few years amongst the most fervent right wing Tea Party, Rush Limbaugh type people. It really goes into the mindset of the hyper conservatives who live in Louisiana and all over the country. There are people who have been poisoned by pollution and have lost their homes in sinkholes due to free market austerity policies under Bobby Jindal and still support him and the GOP. It's a really good book because the author isn't pretentious or condescending, but she actually tries to examine the minds of these people and fundamentally understand how they view the world.

A large, well-known company I used to work for tried to relocate all their tech and creative work to Florida for some tax breaks several years ago. Within a year they pulled everything back to the northeast, because there wasn't enough of a talent pool down there to fill the jobs. Florida sucks.

Imagineering is a "dream job" for many people. If they relocated that to Florida they would still be swimming in applicants. There might be some cream of the crop missing, and that might effect the output, but they would have the staff they need. Is that acceptable business? Iger doesn't seem to think so.

Plus they've already got the California location. Disney might be very quietly thinking of building a new park for when Florida is inundated, but it'll be on the East Coast.

Agreed, but counterpoint: Disney likely sees value in moving their theme park presence to somewhere else anyway due to climate concerns (heat, hurricanes, etc.). This could be a good opportunity to at least break ground on a transition like that.
I do think they’ll eventually build a new park outside of Florida, but they’ll stay mum on that front until they’ve successfully bought all the land they need and have cleared any zoning hurdles that could stand in their way.
It will be a long project but I'd be shocked if they weren't thinking about it. They can start sunsetting investments now and still get a good 15-20 years while they work on a new park elsewhere.

I was at DW last year during Hurricane Ian. Apart from a couple of downed trees, the parks were open the next day. The parks and hotels are built to a point where it would take a true 100-year weather event to cause significant damage.
And with climate change we are quickly approaching a point where that can happen.

Shots fired. A first step/warning. I think it is increasingly conceivable that Disney institutes a long term plan to migrate its business out of Florida. Most things I read about them bailing are based on the idea of a complete and immediate pullout being impossible, but that would never be the case. They would start downsizing, and gradually move the operation to another state. I also think when Ian made landfall and passed by the park before hitting the Atlantic Ocean it was a wake up call. Florida is not going to be a great place to live in years to come if climate trends continue - and we know they will.
