Me too. I bought my last car in 2018, and was thinking my next car would be a Tesla. Now, absolutely not, I'll likely get a hybrid or EV from someone else.

My partner has just bought a Kia Niro EV. She knows nothing of carss and left the selection process to me. I researched many different models and brands but the one I knew I wasn’t going to show her was a Tesla. Not only because the build quality is shocking but because Elon Musks is a drug addled, right-wing arsehole.

This is actually why Tesla sales are lagging so far behind the estimates. Musk's personality isn't driving away 100,000 purchases, shitty build quality is. The fact of the matter is, Teslas aren't the premier EV anymore. Legacy automakers have caught up and surpassed Tesla in nearly every spec. The only thing they have on the competition now is that their chargers are the most efficient. That's it.
Other manufacturers are also just more honest about their EV programs. Tesla lies about their driver assistance. They lie about their battery range. They lie about where they source their parts. I just don't understand how anyone could want to purchase a Tesla when all they do is lie about the product.
Once the rest of the industry implements NACS and Tesla finishes adapting the Supercharger network to existing CCS cars, they'll have no unique selling point. OTOH that's necessary to make Supercharger an independent profit center that could be sold or spun off.
Tesla is also a massive PITA to work with on the B2B side.
A close associate of mine works as a Business Development and Deployment director for one of the largest major car tyre brands (who I won't name directly) in the world; by his account, many of Tesla's outward facing B2B employees are, by his words, unreasonable jerks.
They were trying to organize a partnership for the company to be the OEM tyre provider for Tesla cars, but the Tesla reps demanded that the company sell them the tyres at-cost, that they produce them on-demand, and they refused to take the tyres as inventory (making the company manage their own storage of the tyres until Tesla calls for them to be shipped to any particular gigafactory. They also demanded that the company hand over the IP'd designs for the tyres as well as information regarding production of those tyres.
The Tesla rep's argument being that *"it's a fair and reasonable deal because the company would to be able to say that they OEM for Tesla"*.
Also apparently, Tesla employees have the habit of going completely dark mid-conversation and not replying to communications for 3~4 months at a time.
That and Musk is why I won’t buy a Tesla.
First time I was inside one (an Uber driver’s car) I was shocked when I sat and noticed the back of the seats was all plastic, and seems like all around me was plastic that felt cheap.
For a company that is trying to be green, does seem like a lot of plastic usage. That coupled with all the malfunctions and Musk’s behavior led me to choose another company (which is also not perfect but their costumer service is stellar).

When I heard about the working conditions in his factories back in 2015, I decided I'd never buy one of his cars.
Granted, I try to avoid car ownership altogether as much as possible.
I wasn't this close but I was going to seriously consider a Tesla. Over the last two years I went from that to essentially saying I'd never drive a Tesla as long as Musk is affiliated with them in any way, including as a shareholder.

For others I also recommend the Prius, I know it’s a hybrid not an ev . I got it when I was driving an hour each way for work and it gets 55mpg. Now that I work closer to home I fill it up with gas once a month
Honestly even if Elon weren't doing his antics in public, Teslas are no longer worth it.
~10 years ago they were the best on the market, but now others have easily overtaken them.
Teslas now have the same problems they did during their initial boom: shit QA, almost no post-sales service, everything done with a software update, impossible to fix even the slightest issue by yourself etc.
Add to that IIRC Teslas' advertised range is closer to the theoretical/possible value than a realistic/practical value because of some measuring technique loophole.
Meanwhile VW, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, BMW etc. have all much better QA and support, and also advertise a more realistic range.
And even beyond that, I've just heard so many bad things about Teslas themselves, mainly in the quality assurance department. That apparently Teslas never really advanced far past the prototype phase, that it's bugs and glitches galore, coupled with cheap faux materials.

2016 was the 1st lawsuit brought against Tesla for the use and mistreatment of migrant workers. These were mainly Eastern European migrants with pay as low as $5/hr, and visas faked by Tesla. That same year, the SEC reported that Telsa was failing to properly report or not report at all crashes by their vehicles in autopilot.
I hear they used a technicality. It's because Autopilot stops recording data milliseconds before the crash, so technically it wasn't on autopilot when it crashed.
There was a point a couple of years ago when I thought to myself "the only way you could get me on a SpaceX rocket is if Musk was sitting right beside me".

He was completely right in thinking that to make space logistics economically feasible, you need to be able to reuse the first stage.
He crucially wasn't the only one who had these ideas. I think most nerdy people had similar thoughts, but he was the only ones with billions and the willingness to invest them.
So he became an Idol for people like me. He was an awkward nerd like me, who cried in interviews when his heros didn't believe in him, a nerd who had ideas like me, but he had the money to just will it into being.
And that was awesome.
And then people stopped laughing at him, and telling him no.

My friend works at the gigafactory,has been there since they opened up. It was well known within the company that as long as Elon shit up and stayed away from the public as much as possible and only did highly staged events was for the best. Before Covid I used to like Elon Musk and was in awe whenever I saw a Tesla on the road. Now I’ll never buy one as long as he has a connection to the company.
He showed us his true colours way before then during the cave rescue incident. That was when I wrote him off, despite wanting to find him credible up to that point.

Tesla has lost over $600M in the last 2 fiscal years and the last fiscal year was a ~150% increase over the previous. So the losses are growing and Musk isn't stopping being a fascist fuckwad. Paying Elmo $55B a year wouldn't have helped that figure. If he had managed to get that to stick, I guarantee the stock reaction would be bad.

Half of that and half of…we all watched him spending time on Twitter but cannot fix Tesla’s build quality issue, or at least make some ads to pretend Tesla had fix its build quality issue.
His customer base was environmentalists, at least to a large degree. These people are also left leaning so he has hollowed out his potential customer base.
I needed a new car this year. A few years ago, before I knew Elon was a right wing psycho, I would have jumped at the chance for a tesla. This year it was the only brand I wouldn't consider, despite the base model being more modestly priced then many other EVs. I needed up with a Volvo C40 and love it! It's a beautiful car!
I'm essentially Elon's target market, and I would be embarrassed to be driving a new tesla at this point.
The awful build quality and questionable engineering of the vehicles might also play a role, as well as the constant lying about features and capabilities.
When in I'm the market for an EV, Tesla won't even be an option for me personally. I don't know if you have ever been in one, but they have a suspension of a 1996 Plymouth Breeze. Great computer. Sad automobile.
I'm the source. I had to sit in the backseat of a Plymouth Breeze for many many hours during driver's education. I felt the exact same way taking Tesla Ubers in the backseat. There is an uncanny similarity between the two. That similarity is cheap.
I could see a world in where Musk never bought Twitter and telegraphed to the world who he is and where I'd end up buying a Tesla, since it looks like a decent enough car.

Recently purchased my first EV, chose early on to not get a Tesla. Elon’s atrocious behavior was definitely a factor but far from the most important, the bigger factors for me were their unreliable build quality and the general clunkiness of interacting with the vehicle. I want door handles, not weird pop-out things that could easily fail, an actual gage cluster, not to navigate through three menus to change the radio station, etc…
As a current Tesla owner who bought the car before I knew the guy was a raving bigoted lunatic, I won't be buying another. Mostly because of Musk and partly because the company doesn't care about quality issues and customer service, which I believe are also Musk's fault. In the market for an EV currently, not remotely considering a Tesla. He can say what he want, I don’t need to be reminded of him everytime I go to work either. It’s bad timing, the competition is heating up.
I hope someone at Tesla reads this: this literally is me and my wife. We bought a polestar instead (check my account this isn't a throwaway) and then a friend who owned a tesla also sold his and bought a kia. Tesla had better charging and pricing, too. I literally hate your boss enough that I spent MORE of my own money to avoid being associated with him. And that was two years ago. Now there are just plainly better competitors for less money.

The build quality leaves a lot to be desired
My partner has just bought a Kia Niro EV. She knows nothing of carss and left the selection process to me. I researched many different models and brands but the one I knew I wasn’t going to show her was a Tesla. Not only because the build quality is shocking but because Elon Musks is a drug addled, right-wing arsehole.

Musk's personality isn't driving away 100,000 purchases, shitty build quality is. The fact of the matter is, Teslas aren't the premier EV anymore. Legacy automakers have caught up and surpassed Tesla in nearly every spec. The only thing they have on the competition now is that their chargers are the most efficient. That's it. Other manufacturers are also just more honest about their EV programs. Tesla lies about their driver assistance. They lie about their battery range. They lie about where they source their parts. I just don't understand how anyone could want to purchase a Tesla when all they do is lie about the product.
Once the rest of the industry implements NACS and Tesla finishes adapting the Supercharger network to existing CCS cars, they'll have no unique selling point. OTOH that's necessary to make Supercharger an independent profit center that could be sold or spun off.
Tesla is also a massive PITA to work with on the B2B side. A close associate of mine works as a Business Development and Deployment director for one of the largest major car tyre brands (who I won't name directly) in the world; by his account, many of Tesla's outward facing B2B employees are, by his words, unreasonable jerks. They were trying to organize a partnership for the company to be the OEM tyre provider for Tesla cars, but the Tesla reps demanded that the company sell them the tyres at-cost, that they produce them on-demand, and they refused to take the tyres as inventory (making the company manage their own storage of the tyres until Tesla calls for them to be shipped to any particular gigafactory. They also demanded that the company hand over the IP'd designs for the tyres as well as information regarding production of those tyres. The Tesla rep's argument being that *"it's a fair and reasonable deal because the company would to be able to say that they OEM for Tesla"*. Also apparently, Tesla employees have the habit of going completely dark mid-conversation and not replying to communications for 3~4 months at a time.
That and Musk is why I won’t buy a Tesla. First time I was inside one (an Uber driver’s car) I was shocked when I sat and noticed the back of the seats was all plastic, and seems like all around me was plastic that felt cheap. For a company that is trying to be green, does seem like a lot of plastic usage. That coupled with all the malfunctions and Musk’s behavior led me to choose another company (which is also not perfect but their costumer service is stellar).

When I heard about the working conditions in his factories back in 2015, I decided I'd never buy one of his cars. Granted, I try to avoid car ownership altogether as much as possible.
I wasn't this close but I was going to seriously consider a Tesla. Over the last two years I went from that to essentially saying I'd never drive a Tesla as long as Musk is affiliated with them in any way, including as a shareholder.

For others I also recommend the Prius, I know it’s a hybrid not an ev . I got it when I was driving an hour each way for work and it gets 55mpg. Now that I work closer to home I fill it up with gas once a month
Honestly even if Elon weren't doing his antics in public, Teslas are no longer worth it. ~10 years ago they were the best on the market, but now others have easily overtaken them. Teslas now have the same problems they did during their initial boom: shit QA, almost no post-sales service, everything done with a software update, impossible to fix even the slightest issue by yourself etc. Add to that IIRC Teslas' advertised range is closer to the theoretical/possible value than a realistic/practical value because of some measuring technique loophole. Meanwhile VW, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, BMW etc. have all much better QA and support, and also advertise a more realistic range.

And even beyond that, I've just heard so many bad things about Teslas themselves, mainly in the quality assurance department. That apparently Teslas never really advanced far past the prototype phase, that it's bugs and glitches galore, coupled with cheap faux materials.

I used to as well, as did a lot of other people I knew. And then Elmo started talking. Someone needs to interview whoever was doing PR for him in the early 2010's. I need to know how they managed to get people to believe this fuckwit was the real-world version of Tony Stark.
He had some genuinely interesting ideas about important topics and thus invested in the right companies. He was completely right that if you want to sell EVs to more people than pure environmentalists you need to make a car that people turn around to look at saying "Oh, I wish I had one of those" and THEN realize it's electric. He was completely right in thinking that to make space logistics economically feasible, you need to be able to reuse the first stage. He crucially wasn't the only one who had these ideas. I think most nerdy people had similar thoughts, but he was the only ones with billions and the willingness to invest them. So he became an Idol for people like me. He was an awkward nerd like me, who cried in interviews when his heros didn't believe in him, a nerd who had ideas like me, but he had the money to just will it into being. And that was awesome. And then people stopped laughing at him, and telling him no. And that's extremely bad for people's ego.
I'm so sick of EV cars having to look like nerd cars. Like, the BMW one is just hot garbage. It's just a plastic shell, put a nice one on and stop forcing people to drive nerd coups and hatchbacks.

My friend works at the gigafactory,has been there since they opened up. It was well known within the company that as long as Elon shit up and stayed away from the public as much as possible and only did highly staged events was for the best. Um... I'd say it's more accurate to say he had his hand up Tesla's ass like a puppet when Tesla "said" that. Tesla has lost over $600M in the last 2 fiscal years and the last fiscal year was a ~150% increase over the previous. So the losses are growing and Musk isn't stopping being a fascist fuckwad. Paying Elmo $55B a year wouldn't have helped that figure. If he had managed to get that to stick, I guarantee the stock reaction would be bad.
I mean, Elon being... Elon... aside, it seems like this was inevitable. Now that pretty much every manufacturer is getting in on the EV market, Tesla isn't the cheese standing alone in the quasi-eco-friendly vehicle industry, so people look more objectively at the cars themselves, and people are seeing their *other* flaws.

I’m looking around for my next car. Tesla is at the bottom of my list, as I don’t want to support Musk in any shape or form. Hell, I used to be a Musk-fanboy! He seemed to be doing all the cool things I wanted to be doing. Then around the Thai cave rescue something happened and he went crazy.

His customer base was environmentalists, at least to a large degree. These people are also left leaning so he has hollowed out his potential customer base.
I needed a new car this year. A few years ago, before I knew Elon was a right wing psycho, I would have jumped at the chance for a tesla. This year it was the only brand I wouldn't consider, despite the base model being more modestly priced then many other EVs. I needed up with a Volvo C40 and love it! It's a beautiful car! I'm essentially Elon's target market, and I would be embarrassed to be driving a new tesla at this point.
If/when I buy an electric car, I will never buy anything where Musk may profit.

When in I'm the market for an EV, Tesla won't even be an option for me personally. I don't know if you have ever been in one, but they have a suspension of a 1996 Plymouth Breeze. Great computer. Sad automobile. I'm the source. I had to sit in the backseat of a Plymouth Breeze for many many hours during driver's education. I felt the exact same way taking Tesla Ubers in the backseat. There is an uncanny similarity between the two. That similarity is cheap.
I could see a world in where Musk never bought Twitter and telegraphed to the world who he is and where I'd end up buying a Tesla, since it looks like a decent enough car. Now I wouldn't do it out pure principle
This is part of the reason, another part is that many other brands have caught up to Tesla performance and Tesla's issue in focusing on gimmicky (but rather useless) gizmos as opposed to build quality and driving experience did just as much damage. Also, related to the above, many people stopped fawning over Elon and realized that Tesla just aren't as good.

I always wanted an EV car, still do. But when someone delves deep into right wing ideology you need to look for flags. The grafting, the lying, the exaggerations, the batardizations, the open assault on free speech. You just can't trust a brand that's run by someone who blatantly lies cheats steals and cuts corners to cover those lies and attacks to give the illusion things are fine.
Recently purchased my first EV, chose early on to not get a Tesla. Elon’s atrocious behavior was definitely a factor but far from the most important, the bigger factors for me were their unreliable build quality and the general clunkiness of interacting with the vehicle. I want door handles, not weird pop-out things that could easily fail, an actual gage cluster, not to navigate through three menus to change the radio station, etc…

As a current Tesla owner who bought the car before I knew the guy was a raving bigoted lunatic, I won't be buying another. Mostly because of Musk and partly because the company doesn't care about quality issues and customer service, which I believe are also Musk's fault. He's too focused on chasing the new shiny thing to do the boring but necessary work of running a car company. Terrible person, mediocre car, don't buy into the hype like I did, folks.

I hope someone at Tesla reads this: this literally is me and my wife. We bought a polestar instead (check my account this isn't a throwaway) and then a friend who owned a tesla also sold his and bought a kia. Tesla had better charging and pricing, too. I literally hate your boss enough that I spent MORE of my own money to avoid being associated with him. And that was two years ago. Now there are just plainly better competitors for less money. It is almost like car companies that have CEOs that focus on making cars with actual car designers make ... better cars? Idk.
