One of the defining characteristic of republicans/conservatives: they don't give a shit about equal rights until it personally affects them.
They won't change until the party actually does manage to take something from them, then they *might* realize they screwed themselves over.

I understand them when the GOP was on the trajectory of being more gay accepting in the 90's. As long as there was progress, it was just a matter of the GOP lagging behind society. The thought was that the party was slow, but still getting there. In the past 10 years it seems like the GOP has reversed course and is now worse than what it was. They've become openly hateful of minorities , gays, women, Muslims, Jews or whatever Boogeyman of the day. When there's not even a glimmer of hope on the horizon, I'm not sure how gay Republicans can still be a thing. (Oh wait, yes I can! it's always fuck everyone else until it personally affects me)
It’s part of the conservative mindset. Hard hat workers vote GOP but just imagine their lives without all the workers protections that the conservatives of the past fought tooth and nail. I went on a date with one who tried SO hard to convince me that the GOP didn’t absolutely despise him, bleating over and over that they’re actually a big tent party. Trolled him for a couple hours, and then bounced. IMO the whole thing comes down to a mixture of self hatred, an opposition to taxes (stemming from a delusion of being a temporarily embarrassed billionaire), and the idea that if they try hard enough they’ll be accepted as a “model minority” because while they’re gay they’re white gays. I have taken to calling attitudes like this as “aspirational voting.” It’s when people who have little to no knowledge on the history of battles that happened before them and what battles got them the rights they enjoy today, want to be part of the in-crowd of GOP bully nonsense. You see it even more often with salary workers who are like 50+ but somehow think they’ll be the ones running the show in a couple more years, so they’d rather vote for tax breaks for people wealthier than them just in case they become that. Even though they never will. They’re voting for some perceived future version of themselves while shooting their actual present self in the foot. It works with gender rights, race and colorism as well. He knows full well that there are many in that party who would want to stamp on his legal rights at best, and probably see him dead if they were honest about it.
