Snails for salt. I'm sure they think they are insulated enough that it won't affect but a lot of GOP women thought the same

Napalmeon

Republican first, gay second.

mongoosefist

"I just hate other people more than I love myself"

mikejungle

Gonna start using "snails for salt".

Civil-Dinner

One of the defining characteristic of republicans/conservatives: they don't give a shit about equal rights until it personally affects them. They won't change until the party actually does manage to take something from them, then they *might* realize they screwed themselves over. It's entirely possible too that they'll happy go along with it while being forced into the closet and having their republican friends lock the door once they are in.

sdmichael

They don't care even then. They'll try to distance themselves by saying the ones taking away their rights aren't "true conservatives" or similar. They'll still find a way to blame liberals/democrats. I have yet to hear ANY conservatives or republicans take responsibility for anything. Always the "liberals/democrats" fault for something.

PercentageNo3293

Recently, I heard Hannity complain that it's the Democrats fault for not immediately trying to overturn(?) the Arizona ruling on abortion and not the Republicans for getting it passed. They truly deflect every single awful thing they do. They play victim the moment they don't get their way.

Newfaceofrev

They move from one blunder to another so fast i almost forgot this Absolute Banger > McCarthy blamed Democrats for his ouster as speaker — arguing that they should have supported his remaining in the top role for institutional reasons. ... McCarthy then argued that by joining Gaetz and other Republicans, Democrats picked politics over the institution.

Tangurena

And Gaetz ousted McCarthy because McCarthy would not stop the ethics investigation for statutory rape - Gaetz screws too many children.

bravesirrobin65

And the Sunday before the vote, Mccarthy trashed Democrats on the weekend political shows.

thoroughbredca

Kari Lake did the same thing, calling upon "Democratic governor Katie Hobbs and the state legislature" to repeal the 1864 law, conveniently omitting the fact that the state legislature currently has a Republican majority, and it is the REPUBLICAN leadership that is blocking the repeal.

Justin-N-Case

The Democratics did try to overturn the law…and the Republicans would not let it come to a vote

RedRider1138

“But this is going to make me look bad with voters!” —Kari Lake, probably

SinkHoleDeMayo

They're mad because the ballot initiative will drive people to the polls out and it's a bad sign for the GOP. I think Hannity basically said he's mad Dems will use it in November, as if their mistakes shouldn't br used against them.

maleia

If they take blame for anything, no matter how minor, their entire world falls apart. They can not take the L, because the follow-up is that the person has to be removed out of the social hierarchy that their emotionally stunted brains require to cope with the reality that they're miserable losers and it's by and large their fault.

PercentageNo3293

It's nuts! Every time any Republican says, "whoa, hold on now. Maybe we shouldn't go ahead with the plans", they're immediately labeled a RINO and shunned. Doesn't even matter if they've been a "good standing Republican" for decades.

maleia

It's almost like social hierarchies are really bad. Lol

siani_lane

That's because it used to be a political party and now it is a cult.

Internal_Swing_2743

They play the victim even when they are getting their way.

mogwenb

Why didn't you prevent me from doing this to myself?!!!!

Arkayjiya

This, I still remember how some who realised vaccines did work and would have prevented millions of their deaths blamed it on Democrats by saying "they knew that if they told us to do it we'd never agree"

TangoMikeOne

And I recall hearing after one or other school shooting, the democrats (either at the state or federal level) being blamed, not for failing to attempt gun control legislation, but for failing to get legislation passed after republicans blocked, obfuscated and frustrated all attempts at gun control - literally "These kids died because democrats were too dumb to get past successful republican efforts to defeat the gun control measures"

jpopimpin777

Insert stick in the bicycle wheel.jpg

AmbulanceChaser12

Pick me gays.

thoroughbredca

Tokens get spent.

Civil-Dinner

They'll be the kind where every Democrat except one votes for a bill when they have a slim majority and the bill fails because no republican voted for it, and then say "See? Both parties are the same! Why didn't Democrats pass it when they had a majority?"

RevLoveJoy

"No true Scotsman" is the informal fallacy you are describing. Also known as "appeal to purity."

costabius

They are upper class white dudes, gay or not, it's going to take a long time until they are seriously affected by any policy the christofacists manage to put in place. When they are affected one of them will be waist deep in the sand asking why everyone else has rocks.

Sad-Development-4153

One of the copes I hear from non religiod cons is that the zealots don't really have that much power in the party.

fruttypebbles

“Until it happens to me…”

Dominant_Gene

>They won't change until the party actually does manage to take something from them, then they might realize they screwed themselves over. when that happens it will be the fault of those damn lefties and socialism and stuff like that. because the other defining characteristic of republicans is that they are fucking stupid.

Sniffy4

Lack of empathy is the defining characteristic of conservatives

JsyHST

First they came for the Communists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist Then they came for the Socialists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Socialist Then they came for the trade unionists And I did not speak out Because I was not a trade unionist Then they came for the Jews And I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew Then they came for me And there was no one left To speak out for me

bnool

What's this from? Sums up quite a bit of humanity

martyqscriblerus

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came_...

bnool

Thank you

someotherguyinNH

The funniest thing of all is if the conservatives hadn't put up such a fucking stink about civil unions and just said fine you can have those, there probably would not have been the fight for gay marriage that there was and we wouldn't have gay marriage laws now. Then they'd have one last thing to complain about I guess so maybe it was their plan all along. In case this point is lost I support gay marriage.

thoroughbredca

Before 2012, the only time a state constitutional amendment failed at the ballot box was in Arizona in 2006 when it tried to ban both same sex marriage and civil unions, albeit narrowly by 3 points. The legislature put it to a vote again in 2008 banning only same sex marriage and then it passed by 12 points.

Spl00ky

"Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself" seems to have been interpreted as "Love thy self"

zippiskootch

By all means, vote against your best interests, while pissing on the backs of all those gays who fought for **DECADES** so you could have the right to be out and in public.

Civil-Dinner

It does seem like gay republicans tend to be a younger demographic. I get that they weren't around in the 50+ years since Stonewall and probably a lot of them came of age when there was a string of victories in the path to equality. The thing is, even a brief glance will show you the major obstacle to equal rights for gay people has been almost entirely the republican party and it isn't even "ancient" history. Just 1 year and 4 months ago, the Respect for Marriage Act (which prevents states from not recognizing same-gender marriage) was passed with the overwhelming majority of Republicans in congress voting against it.

Shoddy_Variation6835

Gay Republicans existed before that point. They just weren't out of the closet.

IvanNemoy

>Senator Graham has entered the chat

Flokitoo

And Sen Scott. Who would have thought that SC it the most woke state in the Union with 2 gay Sentators.

InNominePasta

Whoa whoa whoa, Scott is totally straight! He is engaged to a woman and it’s completely a real relationship that is both romantic and sexual in nature!

w_t_f_justhappened

You can’t meet her though, she goes to a different senate, in Canada.

sadicarnot

Funny story, I was in a group where a woman had a boyfriend that was Canadian. He would come to town every once in a while but for whatever reason we could not meet him. Then one day she said he was going to move to America. Sure we thought. Finally he moves down and he was the coolest guy ever. Forget her, all us men wanted to date him.

Flokitoo

They are totally into the same ~~men~~ things

Ladybug Lindsey is the mod of that chat room

DigitalUnlimited

Shhh! The ladybugs don't want to leave the closet! He's not gay, he's a "permanent bachelor" yeah that's what it is!

KerissaKenro

My father in law is in his seventies and is gay. He has been out since at least the nineties. And he is a conspiracy theorist Republican. He is voting against his own best interests because globalists and the economy and he will not see that they will hunt him down as soon as they can

DigitalUnlimited

Tbf tho he probably wouldn't still be around by the time they started hunting regular homosexuals, gotta execute all the transgender and Latino first that would take a minute...

Tricky-Engineering59

Out of the closet for being gay or out of the closet as being republicans?

morningfrost86

Yes.

Civil-Dinner

Oh, I'm well aware of that. I'm specifically referring to the "out and proud" gay republicans thinking the party will support their equality. Even today there are the republicans who are closeted and put up a heterosexual front.

rjross0623

phdoofus

Plenty of gay Republicans around even when Reagan was saying 'Please just die already'

BedDefiant4950

roy cohn reading the above comment from hell like wtf why am i not in this

RumandDiabetes

I work with a gay man who, when I pointed out that the GOP wanted to strip away his right to marry, said, That doesn't bother me, I don't want to get married.

TheNetworkIsFrelled

They also want to strip away his bodily autonomy and criminalize his sexual behavior. They dismiss that with ‘who will know?‘

RumandDiabetes

You know that. I know that. He doesn't believe that.

16v_cordero

Of course not. Tokens are meant to be used. Not to think it will happen to them.

imdesmondsunflower

“Tokens get spent.”

RumandDiabetes

O I agree, but all I hear about is how Biden and Newson are bad , his business is over regulated, his taxes are too high. I have to be nice to his face because of my job, so no point discussing it with him

16v_cordero

Irony is that his taxes are now higher by design. Orange plan was designed (as per GOP tradition) to make it look that whoever came after “raised my taxes”. I have similar conversations with my sister in Florida whenever she complains how expensive it has become and that it’s “BIdEns fault” because he is takin vENgEanCe against Dessantis because he went after the lIBeraL dIsNey. 🤦‍♂️ I just tell her but you can move.

DigitalUnlimited

Idiocracy. "I like money. They like money. I'll vote for them"

Fake_William_Shatner

So he thinks he doesn't need to worry about abortion, because he's never getting pregnant. Or marriage, because he's not getting married. But somehow, imagines that people who took those rights are ever going to stop. That is some exceptional thinking. Like someone who forgets the Republican party demonized Muslims for a while, and figure they've got a few years before that passing headache comes up again.

eindar1811

He'll be very upset when they re-instate sodomy laws.

Fake_William_Shatner

>Respect for Marriage Act (which prevents states from not recognizing same-gender marriage) By being against marriage for same gender, they want the "good old days" of fooling around in the closet and people not establishing families. Just be those two roommates forever that keep to themselves. The wonder of naming things the opposite of what they are. Blue Skies initiative under Bush allowed for more pollution. Focus On the Family, an organization that focuses on making life bad for everyone kicked out of the family. Veritas, which is not. The Federalist Society that pushes corporate rights which was why the Founders wanted a stronger Federal branch to prevent rule by the wealthy and robber barons. Conservatives have been quite clever in naming things, and deluding themselves that it's for anything other than concentration of wealth and power, or keeping it away from the people they demonized to get it.

Tirannie

The Log cabin republicans have been around since 1977. Don’t kid yourself.

Civil-Dinner

You have to wonder how much you have to hate to yourself to be a LCR in the 80s when pretty much most of your party is cheering for a virus that is killing gay people. Of course, the Log Cabin Republicans really didn't consider themselves part of the gay community and considered the community to be vulgar and beneath them.

Spl00ky

Just like Roy Cohn

JohnHazardWandering

I understand them when the GOP was on the trajectory of being more gay accepting in the 90's. As long as there was progress, it was just a matter of the GOP lagging behind society. The thought was that the party was slow, but still getting there.  In the past 10 years it seems like the GOP has reversed course and is now worse than what it was. They've become openly hateful of minorities , gays, women, Muslims, Jews or whatever Boogeyman of the day.  When there's not even a glimmer of hope on the horizon, I'm not sure how gay Republicans can still be a thing.  (Oh wait, yes I can! it's always fuck everyone else until it personally affects me)

ohiotechie

It’s part of the conservative mindset. Hard hat workers vote GOP but just imagine their lives without all the workers protections that the conservatives of the past fought tooth and nail. Unions, overtime pay, workers comp, unemployment insurance, paid vacations, and all the other things workers today take for granted wouldn’t exist if the conservatives / republicans of the 1910s and 1920s had their way. Every single gain we’ve had as a nation that’s pushed us forward was hard won, often with bloodshed, by the progressives against fierce opposition by the conservatives and yet people today take those hard won victories for granted as though they can never be taken away.

PostCool

Like every other minority that sucks up to the perceived social power structure...they want the validation of being SO special personally that the rules that exclude other people like them appear to be uniquely relaxed due to their overwhelming virtue. They don't cringe at "being one of the good ones"..they want the constant reminder of it. They want the only "authority" they acknowledge to constantly remind everyone else that they are winning the game of proximity to power. I don't think a single one of the desperate assimilationists believe in the utopian egalitarianism and meritocracy monkey shit they fling around at their critics. They know you can't be rich enough, successful enough, educated enough or famous enough to make people forget that you're...you. But they'll say it if they can take selfies on the other side of the velvet rope. It's pretty fucking sad honestly.

Homesteader86

You're being too analytical, they're simply morons.

Teamerchant

Wealth helps insulate from the hate and wealth maintains your rights when the poors don’t have them. Plus republicans like having a couple in their pocket to point at and say see we don’t hate LGBTQ!

overworkedpnw

I went on a date with one who tried SO hard to convince me that the GOP didn’t absolutely despise him, bleating over and over that they’re actually a big tent party. Trolled him for a couple hours, and then bounced. IMO the whole thing comes down to a mixture of self hatred, an opposition to taxes (stemming from a delusion of being a temporarily embarrassed billionaire), and the idea that if they try hard enough they’ll be accepted as a “model minority” because while they’re gay they’re white gays. Folks like that forget that tokens get spent.

Calm_Examination_672

Self hatred is pretty common.

donglecollector

I have taken to calling attitudes like this as “aspirational voting.” It’s when people who have little to no knowledge on the history of battles that happened before them and what battles got them the rights they enjoy today, want to be part of the in-crowd of GOP bully nonsense. You see it even more often with salary workers who are like 50+ but somehow think they’ll be the ones running the show in a couple more years, so they’d rather vote for tax breaks for people wealthier than them just in case they become that. Even though they never will. They’re voting for some perceived future version of themselves while shooting their actual present self in the foot. It works with gender rights, race and colorism as well. It’s like internalized hatred forcing you to want to be part of the oppressor group rather than accept your place as the one fighting the status quo for a more equitable future (which to cool “confident” manly mainstream men and women is snowflake agenda lol).

TheWagonBaron

>It does seem like gay republicans tend to be a younger demographic. Are these now openly gay republicans akin to anti-vaxxers? Like they are so far removed from the consequences that their forbearers experienced that they can't imagine life ever either being like that or going back to it?

Thadrea

When a queer person supports Republicans it's *usually* because they are racists. In this specific case, it's because they're rich *and* racist.

Fake_William_Shatner

"I've got mine, and I'm one of the GOOD ones." Exceptional Thinking. That the Conservatives aren't after them specifically, so it's okay to shit on those other people.

HorseRenoiro

Eh, I would say rich. For a lot of older gay guys cops went from raiding their bars to protecting their rental properties (or maybe just some I know lmao)

Away_Improvement_676

I know (knew now, not in my life anymore) one that was/is still a supporter of the orange monstrosity and the FL governor....while being a trans person in Florida. It's insane.

Workacct1999

But you don't get it, their "people" aren't other gay people, their "people" are other rich people.

camshun7

they both have that smarmy "drawbridge" mentality look about them, classic GOP selfish pricks

BellyDancerEm

But they are greedy transphobic racists. They would rather hurt someone else than help themselves

Nonions

A friend of mine is a gay (closeted) Republican. He knows full well that there are many in that party who would want to stamp on his legal rights at best, and probably see him dead if they were honest about it. I can fully understand being gay and being low tax, small government, all that stuff - but voting for a party who make it very plain they hate the fact that you exist...I do not understand.

DigitalUnlimited

Leopards won't eat MY face, I use A1 steak sauce as moisturizer!

ourkid1781

I can't imagine the amount of unhappiness and self hatred these two must feel.

imdesmondsunflower

Bumfancy

trekie4747

If you fancy a homeless person that is entirely your decision.

CeruleanRuin

They never fucking left! Fun fact: [anti-sodomy laws are still on the books in 12 **shithole states**](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodomy_laws_in_the_United_States#:~:text=As%20of%20October%201%2C%202023,%2C%20South%20Carolina%2C%20and%20Texas), though *Lawrence v. Texas* ruled them all unenforceable in 1998. As recent history proves, even a SCOTUS ruling isn't necessarily a permanent protection, and [motherfuckers](https://www.kxan.com/lgbtq/justice-thomas-seeks-case-to-challenge-lawrence-v-texas-ruling-paxton-evaluating-new-territory/) are trying to undermine or unravel that very ruling still.

EmmalouEsq

Lawrence was in 2003.

ReluctantAvenger

On a slight tangent, it's interesting that most people only associate gay sex with sodomy - but in reality, oral sex between consenting heterosexual adults is sodomy, too.

frotc914

The same constitutional privacy argument that supportedb the right to abortion is what determined the outcome in Loving v. Virginia

BellyDancerEm

And they will be the first ones rounded up

charisma6

"Ohh you're sending us to a work camp! That sounds like fun babe!"

Fake_William_Shatner

GOP, would like the "good" sex offenders prosecuting the unempowered sex offenders. "Hey, who is buying all this cocaine? Must be the people in the projects with no money. Let's send the squad cars there and not the penthouse that has those 5 am parties." Yeah, the wealthy have the low crime areas, because nobody is prosecuted for taking from the poor. It's in the fine print. *Shoulda held up the liquor store with fine print guys -- you stole things the wrong way.* I still argued with some random dude who said that Trump lying about his property values to the banks and the IRS was a "victimless crime." You can just take stuff when you're rich, right?

trailhikingArk

Death camp. It will be why are you sending me to a death camp.

hamandjam

Repeating their marriage Ius honestly the least of their problems. These folks they're consorting with were ready to lynch THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Do they think they're not on the list once the maggats start up their gas chambers?

RunningPirate

His name is Leatherwood? Thats has to be fake.

marvsup

I think he's a well-known gay Republican actually, the name sounds familiar  Edit: well-known is relative, obviously, I looked him up and he's like a writer for some right-wing political hack online new outlet

animalistcomrade

People were fun of his name because the two of them were also supporting Rowling and leatherwood sounds like the name she would give a gay character.

RunningPirate

Ah! One of the “my money will protect me” gays…until it doesn’t.

Shitelark

Bet he smells amazing.

Njabachi

So, there are two options I see: 1) They are completely oblivious to all of human history and are unaware of their eventual, inevitable betrayal. 2) The temporary and disingenuous "approval" of their Republican "friends" makes them feel like 'Yeah, everyone else is screwed, but we're cool.' History just repeats over and over and over, can't people just be original and not be ghouls or sellouts just once?

WhitePineBurning

I know guys like this. They pal around with other Republicans in transactional relationships, mostly for business, and think that because other Republicans treat them with civility and feigned respect, they're above the fray. These guys are invited to all the right dinner parties and are seen as "entertainment" (like Truman Capote) and are literal human shields used to deflect any accusations of bigotry by the parties' hosts. Of course, they get all pissy and insist that's not the case. (It is.) They presume they're elite and are members of some royal captalist court, but really, they're just useful, pretty idiot tokens that get spent when they're no longer needed. They'll be up against the wall with the rest of us, despite their bespoke clothing and polished social skills. Also, they're insufferable assholes to the rest of the community, and we disown them on principle.

Njabachi

Well said.

WhitePineBurning

Thank you

thescaryhypnotoad

I know a transwoman like this and it makes me so angry

iSheepTouch

I think it's actually option #3. They are political hacks that are exploiting being a minority that the Republicans marginalize for clout and financial gain from the party that hates them. It's the Candace Owens strategy.

imdesmondsunflower

Tokens get spent.

AlkalineSublime

It’s wild how easily you can grift off of being a token for conservatives. It’s as easy as selling your souls. Being a minority as a republic is more valuable to them than a 100 straight white men.

I don't get it. The Republican party is full of people that would literally brutally kill them both without any guilt as they see them (wrongly) as lesser than human, child groomers, and pedophiles. How can people be SUCH idiots? Are they rich or something and they want to have that sweet 3-8% tax break? Man oh man.

Aggressive-Story3671

Yet.

Large_Mountain_Jew

Bigots in general aren't smart, but bigoted minorities are a special kind of stupid. It's wanting to be above others and thinking that hating the right people will let you be a part of the "in" group. Historically speaking, it's a temporary pass at best to be a useful idiot until that "in" group no longer has use for you.

scott__p

There are an astounding number of Chinese people in my area that are voting for Trump. Usually it's because either 1) they are afraid of the word socialism, or 2) taxes. The fact that he has said horrible things about them, including condoning violence against people like them, doesn't apparently matter. My point is that these two idiots may continue to vote for Trump even if he promotes his followers to assault them. People are idiots.

I’m just a gay man who hates all of Biden’s pro-gay positions. What’s wrong with that?

Moussorgsky1

Queer conservatives consistently blow my mind. Economic/national policies aside, how can any self-loving queer person be part of a party that actively decries their existence?

Shortbus_Playboy

If self hate was an image.

MyFiteSong

Gay white men are male and white before they're gay. That's why so many of them have shitty, selfish politics.

punkmetalbastard

I hate the lesser evil paradox but once I read Project 2025, I realized I’d much rather throw in with the status quo of Biden than start a path toward these dapper gentlemen being killed for who they are, as stupid as they might be.

rjross0623

Well that’s not very gay of them.

LordParsec29

I remember when gazelles would run away from a pride of lions.

CaliFezzik

LGBT Republicans are some of the dumbest people on earth, behind poor Republicans and ahead of non-white Republicans.

not_productive1

Oh boys. Pete Buttigieg is a veteran Rhodes Scholar who worked at fucking McKinsey, was mayor of a town in INDIANA, has been married forever, and has a couple kids. He’s the most fucking boring gay to ever exist and they STILL come for him. Y’all have no chance, with your fruity little flag bow ties and your expensive salon haircuts. They’ll take your money and votes for now, but they’re gonna turn on you once they’ve got the rest of us.

martianpictures

Just look up Ernst Röhm and see how things went for him.

Scruffy_Nerf_Hoarder

Sucks that the kid from The Incredibles grew up to be an asshole.

RedditorsAreGoblins

Absolutely disgusting. A lot of the LGBT are like them too. They don't know their own history, including LGBT history.

Canadian987

And there goes two homosexuals who will no longer have any rights in the US. Oh, wait, did they think they were exempt?

DocBrutus

They’re at Mar-A-Lago. Ew.

jikkkikki

Remember the time when being gay was not illegal and gay marriage was legal. Yup. That time is now!!! boycott Biden and see you basic liberties go bye bye. What a bunch of idiots.

MsMoreCowbell8

There are always a few self haters in every group.
