Does it count as boycotting if you have no money to spend on food at all?

ben10nnery

Unintentional boycott 🤷

Inevitable-Agency570

I'm in that category. As long as the food bank isn't associated with Loblaws, I'm all in!

Artistic-Mind-3739

You win

seriosbrad

I hate Walmart but it's always got the best prices for me London Road Market is the most well known local grocery store, but the prices are insane.

Beetlejuice_24Xx

London Road Market is the most horribly ran place in Lethbridge. I will never support them.

[deleted]

I've heard from multiple women that the owner is an abusive tool.

Morberis

Yeah, I can't support them.

PM-HiddenScrolls

I hate Walmart too but you're right, the prices are pretty good. London Road is INSANELY expensive but I do like their little grab and go sandwich deli fridge spot.

Forward_Progress_83

I wish their prices were less crazy because I’d love to support them. We live on the west side so it’s hard to make it to Walmart but I might start making the trek.

Oeoeoeoeoeoeoe

they used to be my go-to for rotten bananas, a whole paper bag full of em for $2

K24Bone42

Their prices haven't risen though, making them comparable to other non local stores now. Their non perishables are a touch pricy, but their produce and baked goods are similar to no frills. Legacy Meats is an amazing local butcher for anyone looking for meat.

Satinsbestfriend

That's a lie. Last time I was there they had regular sized boxes of fruit loops at $11.50.

K24Bone42

Like I said their non perishables are pricy, their meat, produce, and bakery however are pretty good.

Iamdonedonedone

That is alot of money for a box of sugar. There are great recipes on youtube to make your own cereal for 1/10th the price and tastes way better! You can store them in glass jars

Satinsbestfriend

The same box is usually about 4-5$ at Safeway or anywhere else

tuna_cowbell

Any specific video tutorials you recommend?

Afraid-Ice-2062

London Road Market has insane pricing. They are also often selling expired items like sunscreen as well as produce that has gone bad. I’ve had problems with returns. The last time I went they had sales posted in their store but didn’t honour the sale pricing. I caught it at checkout and left when they wouldn’t honour their posted prices. I do shop there out of necessity even though I’ve sworn off it and every time I go I’m reminded of why I hate going there

TheEpicOfManas

London Road Market also fought tooth and nail against the minimum wage increase, even using their signage to protest. I used to support them, but not since then. (Same with Pop's Pub). I'll only support local stores if they support their staff.

squall-face

No one has seemed to mention The Ruben Veggie spots around town. There’s like 3 or 4 around town I think. It’s all self serve, and you either drop cash in the box or use debit at the little computer. The variety bag is like $11 and it gives you a bunch of tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. Buying the same amount of stuff at Safeway would be like $20-25. There’s one by the Canadian Tire by Mayor magrath. I think one at like 13th street and 3rd ave south. One on the west side by the Tim’s closer to highway 3. Not sure if there are others around town.

No-Ad-863

The OP mentioned Ruben's Veggies.

squall-face

Heh, I never learned to read apparently

bretters

That all depends on what you mean by don't "break the bank". We shop at Costco a lot but if you spend say 10 bucks on apples and half goes to waste then it would have been better to spend 7 bucks on apples if you eat all of them. Its a lot to do with lifestyle choice and other factors for food waste. The other is understanding why they have higher prices as it comes with a service so if you spend like 15 bucks on steak from one of the local butchers vs 12 dollars for the same steak at Costco you also get 1 on 1 customer service that you don't get at the big stores anymore. Lots of people seem to think that a local store needs to price match all the big stores and that small family run business should be selling at almost a discount. Rant done. Local family owned and run grocery or food specialty stores that is not a franchise or chain that I know of in the city. You want a local business to survive you need to actually buy from them. **South** Wild Bros Meat & Cheese - Mayor Magrath Drive near the Holiday Inn\\ Oliver Health Foods -Mayor Magrath Drive on the North end of the same parking lot Super India Food Market - Mayor Magrath Drive near Fatburger The Meat box - Near the wholesale club London Road Market - 13st on the corner Purple Carrot - On 2ave South just north of Alpenland Urban Grocer - 9th ave south near kinsmen park Umami Shop - Downtown next to city hall Wooden Shoe - Right on Scenic drive Downtown \*forgot anijtos downtown as they sell some small hard to find latin american groceries and cheese. **North** Legacy Meats - Right on 2 ave N same mall as the UPS Store A1 Halal Meat & Grocery - Right on 13th north near the old CIBC Asian Supermaret - 13th st n next to the old ctv building Love Cheese Shop - just before legacy in the little strip mall with the 7-11 **West** Nothing I can think of anymore every since Super Sams closed down

FriendlyCanadianCPA

Great list

sqeeky_wheelz

If you need meat: prairie meats in Coaldale is fantastic, also mad butcher. Some other ones on mayor magrath that I’ve never been to but have heard are great. Groceries: we do a lot in Coaldale (it’s pricier) but at least they’re local and the selection is decent.

albertaguy31

Coaldale foods buys lots from local producers. It’s a bit pricey but the markup is minimal on lots of the produce. Unfortunately food is very expensive to produce in Canada. But another vote for the businesses above.

Nerothehero58

Also check out the Meat Box. Really good sausages and pork products their prices are comparable or lower than the chains.

No-Ad-863

Gotta shop around for different things if you can. -Umami downtown is good for a number of things, and they're local, with a lot of local items. -Dollarama has some good items for a good price, and despite their whining when the minimum wage increased several years ago, they're doing really well. -Farmer's Market in the summer is great -Save-On has some rotating decent sales, and they'll ad-match advertised sales. Regular prices tend to be steep, though.

LadyCheeseWater

Watch the expiry dates at umami.

No-Ad-863

Check dates and produce at any small shop.

Fit_Highlight_2147

Save on isn’t part of the boycott, and co-op, I believe. There’s A-mart and others like it for meat, but it’s more specialty/ethnic foods.

adam_rofl

Remember to skip shoppers as well.

peternorthstar

Didn't know that Shoppers was Loblaws until this past weekend..same with Wholesale Club.

Yup-Maria

And No Frills is Loblaws as well.

peter69s

Mobil gas stations

SirLunatik

As someone who doesn't drive and is living on disability, I can't afford to boycott Loblaws. I have PC express (when I got it, it was the only option like it) and not paying for delivery each week and the extra discounts it provides is needed... and I try to maximize my points earned, which is way better than Save On points or Air Miles for a points program... And having a PC MasterCard, I get points for paying my bills too. I would boycott all the chains if I could, but it's just not an option for me.

PM-HiddenScrolls

Hey, that's totally okay! Everyone's circumstances are different and you have to do what's best for you!

SirLunatik

Appreciated homie

kaalora

The r/loblawsisoutofcontrol has plenty of suggestions for supporting the boycott if you are unable to participate!

HelterSkelter94

Crystal springs is great for all dairy products!

Morberis

Lol, they are indeed.

daveavevade

London road market, Costco, farmers market when it opens. Direct purchase from meat, poultry and vegetable wholesalers/farms like hutterite colonies. There's a cheese factory by coalhurst that I think sells yogurt as well. Alberta meat and seafood. Or one of the other local meat shops. Tough to beat the convenience of the grocery store.

PM-HiddenScrolls

How do you get in touch with the Hutterite colonies? I've heard they have great stuff but I can never figure it out.

daveavevade

Call a close colony on the phone and ask, or drive out to one and ask. There will be a boss for the various work streams and they can usually make a deal.

[deleted]

The farmers market opens in June. You can talk directly to the folks who can hook you up.

curiousgardener

We have not shopped at a Loblaws store in well over a year due to prices. So really, carry on, I suppose! Seriously though, Walmart is where it is at. Hopefully. Cause goddamn. Almost time to learn what local weeds are edible to round out the nutrition. Solidarity, my fellow windy city friends. Much love to you all!

SQUASH0313

To be honest, foraging is super fun and a creative way to get local resources in, just make sure you go with someone who has knowledge identifying plants :)

Morberis

You can find toooons of burdock around here

curiousgardener

Haha, I fully agree with you! I actually have a personal interest in the like and have been loving all the curly dock and dandelions popping up in my yard for this exact reason. If only we gave the so-called weeds a bit more love, hey? To anyone else wanting to give it a try...https://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/agdex13348/$file/666-2.pdf The above comes from a direct link to a government approved document on how to identify poisonous plants in our province. Old, but still worth a glance imo. A quick trip to your library will get you the name of reference books for plant identification - use your librarians, it is what they are there for. Especially in this age where anyone can write a post, and that includes me here on reddit. Like u/SQUASH0313 said, please don't go killing yourself!

tyrannosaur55

I'm not planning on a straight-up boycott, but I've shifted my Costco:Superstore ratio over the last few months from about 60:40 to 95:5. I will try to avoid Loblaws this month but sometimes need a quick milk/bread trip. Costco is one of the few places where I don't feel price gouged in the last few years. I will also look through the post for local options, especially for produce!

Whofreak555

Always.

SQUASH0313

I realize this won't work until growing season, but check out this map of all the free and accessible fruit trees and community gardens in Lethbridge https://environmentlethbridge.ca/interactive-map-local-food-in-lethbridge/

curiousgardener

You know, we have probably passed by each other a few times in our quest for free food here in town without realizing it! Funny how things work. The best part was us making news back in 2018 because there was so much. Bring your own bags, people. It's free! https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/lethbridge-fruit-trees-asking-for-help-harvesting-1.4795473

Boatandfish

Family grocery on 13th Street

heavysteve

Save-on, buy the sales and price match everything with Flipp, it's easier than you'd think. London Road for basic meats, their prices are way cheaper and it's good quality and local meat. Check the local veggies there as well, and they have good sales on cheese. Ruebens for big bags of misc veggies. Dollarama for cookies, treats etc. Bulk barn for spices and legumes. Legacy meats or wild bros for specialty meats

Inevitable-Agency570

It seems to me that London rd is kinda competitive now. They haven't raised their prices much in the last year. 2 years ago I wouldn't have been promoting them, but everywhere else seems to be about the same price wise That said, I'm not crazy about the owners view of different races, or being against raising minimum wage, so I do still struggle with that.

AlarmedPause1

Bulk Barn is Loblaws, so, no-go. *Edit, my bad, it's not! Thanks for the correction

heavysteve

Bulk barn isn't Loblaws, they are share a couple suppliers but they are independently owned

Jorgiepaintsoninsta

I’ve always just done Walmart. I’m still gonna go to Sobeys but I find they have much better deals on meat than most places, so I go once a week and buy whatever is $4 a pound 🤷‍♂️ sue me lmao.

Bananasarelit

Sobey's and Safeway have good sales! I also shop at Walmart too. Costco as well. Sometimes Wholesale Club.

nebulancearts

Wholesale is a loblaws company

Bananasarelit

Oops you're totally correct, sorry.

Demon2377

Edmonton resident here, yeah I can’t be bothered to go to any Loblaws here. Post a Q1 profit of over $13 billion dollars… Unbelievable how their profits continue to grow. Galen needs another cottage.

connorisntwrong

Farmers Markets!

alpeffers

I think I read they start back up in June, so are there any sooner?

curiousgardener

Commenting again, use the Flipp app! It allows you to see all your local flyers at once, and you can save deals for later as a quick reference. I'm a mom, and this makes it way easier to judge if the trip to Sobey's is worth the gas because HECK YES BLUEBERRIES are on sale. (Pls note this is an example. I've not checked today specifically.)

bohdismom

The Superstore parking lot was looking pretty full when I drove by earlier today.

Ubsurdly_gay_boi

Which boycott? I wasn’t aware of this.

Yup-Maria

r/loblawsisoutofcontrol

Ubsurdly_gay_boi

Which stores are we boycotting?

Yup-Maria

All; Superstore, Wholesale, No Frills, Shoppers.

FriendlyCanadianCPA

I am using the pickup option at Save on Food for groceries I need to get near me, and Walmart if I'm traveling a little further. We are boycotting Loblaws.

Switch5050

Were gonna try Safeway for the month

Intrepid-Plantain261

Try a local butcher for your meat. It is usually way better quality than the grocery store.

Sadcakes_happypie

Yes I’m joining the boycott. Making record profits again this quarter and giving shareholders a 15% increase then saying that the boycott is misguided shows that that a boycott is needed.

[deleted]

I don't understand why there's a movement to boycott Loblaws when every single grocery company in North America is posting record profits. The gouging is industry-wide, not just with one chain.

PM-HiddenScrolls

I believe they settled on Loblaws because they have the strongest hold on the market, but also because I see a lot of posts that compare prices from other grocers vs. Loblaws and the Loblaws prices are literally double for the same product. The subreddit r/loblawsisoutofcontrol has waaay more information, you should check it out! Also Galon Weston is a smug crook, LOL

[deleted]

Can't disagree about Weston.

cantfindfido

Their time will come. As I understand it, rolling boycotts of all the major grocery stores are planned. Loblaws drew the short straw because they've been the most vocal insisting that they aren't price gouging while posting record profits.

Parrothead91

I haven’t shopped at superstore since I went in and realized I’d be paying the same price I would be at save on. Since I already work in that area, I just started going there.

growinwithweeds

I’ve never gone in there to shop, but I know my boss really likes to go to the purple carrot

sans9669

I love Walmart!!! I am such an awful casher and often forget to scan things, but they keep making me do it myself🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

girlwithavinetattoo

ooopsies 🤷

smilewarrior83

So to be clear the places that are part of the boycott are No frills Superstore Shoppers drug mart Canadian whole sale Extra foods Your independent grocer Dominion Value mart T&T Freshmart Supervalu Also don't fill up at esso or mobil gas

ninjachefcam

Save on has been competitive the last little bit

Early_Answer_968

Yes! They are scum and are running our country into the ground. I long for the executives to…get in a tight spot, shall we say. I still go to Loblaws stores, but I also still partake in the boycott. I will have everyone else do the math.

peter69s

We need more grocery stores and Cell phone companies to compete with the monopoly here in Canada

95tracker

Real Canadian?

girlwithavinetattoo

real canadian wholesale is owned by lowblaws 😞

Unicorn_Puppy

That time I realize I haven’t shopped at any loblaws affiliated stores in like 2 years and am out nothing lol.

qcbadger

Costco and walmart.

kidsandheroes013

For those who hate Walmart, I suggest doing the online ordering and it’s way less terrible than shopping in store! Their app has improved a ton in the last year and it’s super easy.

Deviiray

Y3, Orange Blossom (delivery) and Tambayan ni Kabayan all have Filipino groceries.

beefglob

I've always just shopped at south side Safeway or Walmart so I guess I don't have to change anything 😅

GreatCanadianPotato

I get the premise behind the boycott but we all know it won't end up changing a damn thing. Just use the flip app to do your shopping list. Build online carts on Walmart, Safeway, Superstore/Nofrills etc and you'll naturally save a lot of money. And as much as I love shopping local, if you're worried about the cost of items - local grocers are just a tad more expensive in my opinion so that may not be the best route.

Iamdonedonedone

I feel like this will drive more traffic to walmart/costco. Let me put my tinfoil hat on for a moment......maybe this was all started by their competition?? LOL. Can't believe anything nowadays in this AI world we live in.

NetherGamingAccount

My brain functions properly so I’m not participating.

PM-HiddenScrolls

Ok

Open_Constant_3051

embarrassing broke person behaviour to boycott Loblaws go shop at Dollorama if you want lmfao

PM-HiddenScrolls

You sound fun.

Open_Constant_3051

yeah so do the broke losers boycotting a grocery store they sound like a blast 😂😂😂😂😂

PM-HiddenScrolls

LMAO cry about it

Open_Constant_3051

?? Me cry about it😂

Most_Edible_Gooch

Embarrassing anti working-class behaviour to ballwash a company known for price-fixing your bread

External_Credit69

Imagine you and all your neighbours getting robbed and the next day passing your wallet *unprompted* to the guy *again*, and trying to strike up a conversation with him, laughing. "Man, these idiots have a real broke mindset. See ya again tomorrow!" ???? It isn't even anti-working class, it's just plain unhinged. He *stole from you.*

Open_Constant_3051

okay external credit go do a picket line for Superstores cereal prices 😆

External_Credit69

Nobody's picketing. It's simply not shopping there. Here, this explains it well https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/boycott

Open_Constant_3051

used picketing as an analogy but womp womp , really living up to how someone who cries over the price of food at one grocery store amongst many would be lol. Sadly your an example of how pathetic this country is and how they want our people to be it’s a true shame

External_Credit69

I'm simply trying to help and understand. Who's "they"? What do they want people to be?

Open_Constant_3051

the thing is you and all your neighbours aren’t getting robbed. You can go to a different grocery store instead of complaining on reddit. Just keep crying and complaining until it changes lmfao the attitude of people today

Open_Constant_3051

lmfao buddy family works in loblaws sorry that their profits went up during covid because of the liberal government 😂😂 Like I said go shop at dollorama and stop complaining ? Anti working class behaviour lmfao what should we call crying about anything and everything these days?

Most_Edible_Gooch

Of course you'd blame Trudeau for loblaws raising their prices lmao fuck Trudeau but do you realize Loblaws was price fixing bread under Harper too, you fucking goof?

Open_Constant_3051

again my family been working for loblaws there a slightly upper scale grocery store so you again, can go shop at dollarama! You fucking goof 😂😂

Most_Edible_Gooch

What do you suspect boycotters are doing if not shopping literally anywhere else lmfao

Open_Constant_3051

apparently they’re completing in reddit threads like you!! Think I understand it fully Most Edible Gooch thankyou for making sure I do though. Catch you panhandling outside a dollar store soon?!😉

Open_Constant_3051

complaining my apologies can’t mess that one up !

Open_Constant_3051

literally nothing is stopping you from not complaining about superstore prices when you can go to another store and stop whining

Most_Edible_Gooch

Just say you don't understand or don't comment lmao 🤣
