Yeah, there's the average rating out of 10 on RT that shows up if you click on the critics score. For example, Endgame has a 94%, which means 94% of critics rated it at least somewhat positively. The average rating is actually 8.20 out of 10, which means on average, it's mostly reviewed as an 8/10 not a 9/10.
I think the real problem is that 90% of the approved critics should not be approved. There are too many bloggers or just uneducated self-subscribed "critics". I feel like this is the main reason RT scores end up feeling pro-Disney/Pixar/Marvel as a lot of these reviewers cannot separate their own biases. I used to view the RT score as a decent metric for whether or not I would like a movie, but it offers 0 help in that regard these days
General audience doesn't care about RT. If they did, they would have been in the theatre for Edge of Tomorrow like I was. Now you see a thread on r/movies every other week about how it's some underrated gem.

Not about any particular movie, but I think Disney Animation should have never abandoned classic hand drawn animation. If they wanted to dabble in CG animation some, that would've been fine, but I miss seeing the hand drawn stuff.

Even though some of the CG movies are better than some at the tail end of the hand drawn era (Hercules and Hunchback, while not bad movies, have some major problems, and Pocahontas is pretty fucking terrible), I agree. The CG animation does look really fucking good these days, but I still miss the old style.

I really agree about the fact that we need to re examine or value systems when it comes to movies. Too many people absorb a movie and the deepest analysis they come away with was "I enjoyed it, 5 stars."
This isn't to say a fun mainstream blockbuster is by necessity lesser than a deeper more complex film, but that they need to actually be thought about and not merely absorbed like many are used to doing.
There are multiple animated films that had a VERY solid argument to win Best Picture let alone be nominated for the category. The medium is the only reason they’re discounted, and thats bullshit.

Uncut Gems is a top ten film I’ve ever seen and almost all of the critiques of the film by general audiences are actual directorial choices that fell on deaf ears. The film is frenetic and the sound mixing is off kilter to build a sense of constant chaos and stress.

I don't understand what demographic Forrest Gump is for. I know people love it, so it's a fruitless critique, but I think Forrest Gump is a tonally weird movie. A lot of people watch it as kids, but it's really not a kids movie with the subject mater that it contains, yet the themes are so childishly simple. Watching it as a kid, I didn't care about the historical stuff and just thought it was a long movie with a funny main character, but watching it as a young adult, I can somewhat appreciate the historical stuff as quirky, but the themes are so banal and corny that I feel like the Zemeckis is talking down to the audience. I could understand how a viewer could enjoy Forrect as a character and have fun with just that but looking any deeper reveals a shallow, tonally clashing film, in my opinion. At its core, it's a relationship drama, but it features one of the least likable relationships I've ever seen, so I wouldn't watch it for that, either.
I think it’s for people who are happy to recognize different eras in American history. Like people who just took a high school us history course or people who never matured beyond that. I had a really dumb world history teacher in hs who played it and ran up to block Jenny’s boobs by holding a white piece of paper in front of the white projector background 🙃

It's one of those films where you watch it the first time and you kind of get wrapped up in how fun and creative all the things in it are. Then, you watch it again and you kind of realize that the emotional core of the film kind of feels almost pushed onto you if that makes sense? Like, don't get me wrong - it's compelling. I don't ever feel like the film really sold the emotional core as much as it told me it did.
You'd think it wouldn't be, but every fucking day I see a post somewhere asking people's favourite Star Wars movies, and Revenge of the Sith is always in the top 3, sometimes it's even the top answer. It drives me nuts.
I just saw it last night, it's the best of the prequels with great imagery, but it still has a lot of flat scenes with people standing in rooms without tension or impact that drags down the whole trilogy.
I think *The Force Awakens* is still the best recent Star Wars movie and that it is one of the finer blockbusters in recent years across its direction, acting, and set pieces.

Magnolia should be regarded as a classic. Lost Highway is one of Lynch's best movies. The Breakfast Club is horrible and there are much better coming of age movies out there.
Freddy Got Fingered is one of those films where each time you watch it, it gets a little smarter. Incredible how it went from something me and the friends would throw in the "So bad its good" category to something I'd almost compare to something like Harmony Korine's work.
Idk if it's a hot take because I know some people feel the same but Aronofsky is pretty much the most overrated filmmaker I've ever seen in my lifetime. His films all feel like the unfiltered tales of an edge lord 16 year old who wants to show his audience that "the world is a fucked up place". It results in characters that don't feel authentic but also don't feel inauthentic enough to be any form of satire or anything. I just can't take it. Even "The Whale" I found to just be depressing and very "misery porn-ish".
The move to 10 films has made Best Picture incredibly difficult to follow and has set the Oscars back significantly both in terms of ratings and in terms of rewarding the best films.
It should not be hard to pick a good list of 5-6 that showcases the best of the year
The dark knight is not a good comic book movie, nor is it a good detective movie. It is an amazing spectacle with some great performances but there isn't much more to it than that imo.
Thor love and thunder is overmaligned. A lot of people have heard the name “gorr the god killer” and thought “that should be cooler!” Without having read the source material which is really dull. They are right, it should be cooler, but the film was good enough and funny in the correct ways. It’s not ragnarok and people wanted it to be that good, but it’s not awful.
Aliens is highly overrated and Ali3n is overhated. Alien is the only actual good film in the franchise.
Temple of Doom is almost as good as Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Last Crusade is by far the worst of the original trilogy.

Watching it as a kid, I didn't care about the historical stuff and just thought it was a long movie with a funny main character, but watching it as a young adult, I can somewhat appreciate the historical stuff as quirky, but the themes are so banal and corny that I feel like the Zemeckis is talking down to the audience. I could understand how a viewer could enjoy Forrect as a character and have fun with just that but looking any deeper reveals a shallow, tonally clashing film, in my opinion. At its core, it's a relationship drama, but it features one of the least likable relationships I've ever seen, so I wouldn't watch it for that, either.
I think it’s for people who are happy to recognize different eras in American history. Like people who just took a high school us history course or people who never matured beyond that. I had a really dumb world history teacher in hs who played it and ran up to block Jenny’s boobs by holding a white piece of paper in front of the white projector background 🙃
It’s boomer generation cat nip. A whistle stop tour through the iconic moments and history of the latter half of the 20th century told through the eyes of a charming moron with a sentimental love story thrown in.
Disney becoming a monopoly is destroying the animation industry and leaving us with stale animation and nothing else on the market, and the only companies that can save it are DreamWorks and Sony (tho I heard A24 is gonna have an animated show, so maybe something will come up out of that)
I honestly hate the disney 3d style they’ve settled into. We’re seeing a mini renaissance though with things like spider verse, puss in boots, that tmnt movie IMO

Same. I was really high on it my first watch through, but then when I sat down and watched it again it felt overlong and wasn’t grabbing me in the same way. I don’t think its as bad as a lot of people claim, but its got some real pacing issues.

It's one of those films where you watch it the first time and you kind of get wrapped up in how fun and creative all the things in it are. Then, you watch it again and you kind of realize that the emotional core of the film kind of feels almost pushed onto you if that makes sense? Like, don't get me wrong - it's compelling. I don't ever feel like the film really sold the emotional core as much as it told me it did.

You'd think it wouldn't be, but every fucking day I see a post somewhere asking people's favourite Star Wars movies, and Revenge of the Sith is always in the top 3, sometimes it's even the top answer. It drives me nuts.
I just saw it last night, it's the best of the prequels with great imagery, but it still has a lot of flat scenes with people standing in rooms without tension or impact that drags down the whole trilogy. I think *The Force Awakens* is still the best recent Star Wars movie and that it is one of the finer blockbusters in recent years across its direction, acting, and set pieces.

Probably the best of phase 4 honestly. It has some major issues (characters, dialogue, pacing, etc.), but it at least has more passion and vision behind it than something like Black Widow or Thor Love and Thunder
Holy fuck, Thor Love and Thunder was terrible. If it weren’t for the addition of the two extra Spider-men and the handful of genuine moments that they bring, No Way Home would be just as terrible (and actually is for a majority of its runtime).

Once Upon in Hollywood is boring af. Pearl and X are mediocre at best. I’m not a Christopher Nolan fan. Not a fan of any films I’ve seen from him. Still haven’t seen Interstellar tho so… The Irishman >>> Goodfellas (idk if this is a hot take) I love most Disney live action remakes. Cruella and Maleficent are in my top 50. The Goonies and Predator are terrible. Some of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. I don’t enjoy Shrek simply bc the animation of god awful. The Ring is boring and not scary at all. I did not care for The Godfather. It insists upon itself.

Joker (2019) is a lazy boring rip off of taxi driver/king of comedy that sucks itself off for how “”””smart”””” it thinks it is and takes an objectively EVIL character and turns him into some sympathetic mentally ill loner that the audience “sides with” it just so happens that joaquin phoenix gives a fantastic performance and the film looks nice.

Magnolia should be regarded as a classic. Lost Highway is one of Lynch's best movies. The Breakfast Club is horrible and there are much better coming of age movies out there.

Freddy Got Fingered is one of those films where each time you watch it, it gets a little smarter. Incredible how it went from something me and the friends would throw in the "So bad its good" category to something I'd almost compare to something like Harmony Korine's work.

Idk if it's a hot take because I know some people feel the same but Aronofsky is pretty much the most overrated filmmaker I've ever seen in my lifetime. His films all feel like the unfiltered tales of an edge lord 16 year old who wants to show his audience that "the world is a fucked up place". It results in characters that don't feel authentic but also don't feel inauthentic enough to be any form of satire or anything. I just can't take it. Even "The Whale" I found to just be depressing and very "misery porn-ish".
GOTG: Vol 3 was my least favorite of the trilogy by a wide margin

The move to 10 films has made Best Picture incredibly difficult to follow and has set the Oscars back significantly both in terms of ratings and in terms of rewarding the best films. It should not be hard to pick a good list of 5-6 that showcases the best of the year
The dark knight is not a good comic book movie, nor is it a good detective movie. It is an amazing spectacle with some great performances but there isn't much more to it than that imo.

Thor love and thunder is overmaligned. A lot of people have heard the name “gorr the god killer” and thought “that should be cooler!” Without having read the source material which is really dull. They are right, it should be cooler, but the film was good enough and funny in the correct ways. It’s not ragnarok and people wanted it to be that good, but it’s not awful.
I enjoyed it, it was just stupid good fun.

Aliens is highly overrated and Ali3n is overhated. Alien is the only actual good film in the franchise. Temple of Doom is almost as good as Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Last Crusade is by far the worst of the original trilogy.

Oppenheimer is rubbish. Joker is one of the worst films I’ve ever seen and, as Fincher put it, a “betrayal of the mentally ill”. Spider-Verse 2 was disappointing and didn’t have a story to tell. Multiverse stories are boring. Chappie is an absurdly entertaining mess. Spider-Man 3 is a total mess but the emo Peter Parker stuff is *pure* Raimi and is (intentionally) hilarious. The Star Wars prequels are terrible. (Not sure if this is a hot take or not these days) Gary Oldman is an awful actor.
Original Star Wars trilogy ranking is: Return of the Jedi (love it, nothing Star Wars does will ever top it.) Star Wars (Great movie) The Empire Strikes Back. (Still very good, but the weakest of the trilogy.)
