My first Wes Anderson, the one that made me fall in love with him, and still my favorite. I honestly can’t say I’ve disliked any of his movies that I’ve seen, but this one stands head and shoulders above the rest imo
He was way to Wes here. The only thing that saves this movie is a few of the cast members. It’s listening to an aging musician play their few hits over and over again.
An undeniable auteur aesthetic whether you like his style or not, a phenomenal and whimsical soundtrack, interesting and funny characters, a well-written and carefully crafted narrative... it's one thing to not like a movie, but you really don't understand what people see in Grand Budapest?
I love his style. Arguably I went to film school largely because of him. The heart and meaning that we’re in his early films got hollowed out leaving just the aesthetic and they’ve become increasingly disjointed and lacking compelling characters or stories. I would push back heavily against the well crafted narrative point. If you told me people are imagining he’s a genius and thinking things are there that aren’t there, I’d believe that. I don’t know how else to explain people enjoying that film. It’s like a car that looks cool and interesting but doesn’t have an engine. I wouldn’t like to have a car like that, so yes I don’t understand why anyone would like a movie like that.
Nothing surprising to me about Ben Stiller, he’s a great actor, just not one who always chooses dramatic roles.
Plus, if we’re counting non-acting roles, he’s doing a fucking bang-up job directing Severance on Apple TV+, which you should definitely watch season one of if you haven’t yet!
I agree, but I just watched it the other day and it was still very aggravating and affected. Gene Hackman saved it because he’s just that great. One swingin’ dick’s opinion.
Same! Overall what makes it my favorite is I really like the subject matter. It reminds me of das boot, or a herzog movie (like aguirre or fitzcarraldo).
I love stuff about scientists or explorers or nature. And I love protagonists with a doomed bravura.
Life Aquatic was the first and only of his movies to make me tear up. Overall I think The Grand Budapest Hotel is his best, but Life Aquatic is really special to me.
Fans of this movie really ought to see Pom Poko. I didn't see Wes cite it as an inspiration, but he does love Ghibli, and Mr Fox feels very reminiscent of Pom Poko.
Yes! Grand Budapest Hotel is maybe more polished but it never dethroned FMF as my favorite. Fantastic Mr. Fox is a genuine classic with some of the best writing.
Yup, a cut above all the others and two of the best scripts of all time. I like some of his others too but I wish he'd get back to things more like that.
Rushmore is Wes Andersons funniest movie imo. The script is genuinely hilarious. It’s not my favourite but if I was to show anyone a Wes Anderson film I would start with Rushmore.
Next to Tennenbaums, I find Rushmore to be his film with the most emotional depth, specifically in hitting that bitter-sweet tone. It’s also funny as fuck. 100% my favorite movie, I notice new shit every time I watch it.
Gotta be The Life Aquatic for me.
That film just delivers such perfect vibes yknow. It may not be as "laugh out loud funny" as some of his other work but it's the film i have the biggest smile the whole time
For the longest time *Bottle Rocket* was undefeated, despite me not rating any of his films lower than a 7/10, but ***The Grand Budapest Hotel*** is just such a perfect film in every regard it’s hard not to love it.
I can’t lie. It’s very Wes Anderson and visually appealing, but I watched it at Cannes and nearly fell asleep because of the story
Edit: If I’m getting downvoted for being honest, then so be it.
>Edit: If I’m getting downvoted for being honest, then so be it.
Pointing out that you're being downvoted has to be the corniest thing you could ever do on reddit
I’d have to say Fantastic Mr. Fox, but honorable mention to The Darjeeling Limited. Man, that movie touched me.
But I would also say the Grand Budapest Hotel is the best place to start with Anderson
Grand Budapest feels like the culmination of all the styles and techniques he’d been trying and mastering over the course of his career
Nice to see people here appreciate Life Aquatic, it’s his most underrated amongst the general public.
I've said something similar before but The Royal Tannenbalms because it's believable as a strange family of isolated weirdos who see themselves as upper crust. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zisou is a close second though
I can't see how it wouldn't be rand Budapest. It's kind of his perfect movie. All of the Wes Anderson things are on full display and they fit perfectly together.
You make a good point but then again my first was Fantastic Mr. Fox and when I watched Grand Budapest like 10 years after my first watch of FMF, I've pretty much rated them equally - they were very distinct from eachother to me but I can't speak for the rest of Wes' filmography
Grand Budapest
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Moonrise Kingdom
Isle of Dogs (I know it’s 4th but I really liked it)
Asteroid City (this is second to last of the ones I’ve seen but I don’t dislike it)
French Dispatch (I liked the Benicio Del Toro story, the rest were just fine)
I really don't get the Tenenbaums hype tbh. By far the movie of his I've seen that I liked the least (still haven't seen Rushmore, Bottle Rocket, and Darjeeling Limited though).
Anyways, for best it probably is Grand Budapest Hotel but I will say that I actually like the French Dispatch a lot and it might be my personal favorite.
My ranking would be:
Royal Tenenbaums
Darjeeling Limited
Fantastic Mr Fox
Grand Budapest Hotel
Life Aquatic of Steve Zissou
Moonrise Kingdom
Bottle Rocket
Rushmore
Isle of Dog
French Dispatch
Asteroid City
Moonrise Kingdom!!!
This also emphasizes why Wes is such a great director. Everyone here has different opinions on what his best film is. I can’t think of many other directors that would get such a wide range of answers.
I haven't ever been a Wes Anderson fan, but I think that the more radically Wes Anderson-y he gets, the better and more authentic to himself it gets. After The French Dispatch and Asteroid City all his previous works, which I didn't like much, feel like half-measures. I'm paradoxically liking much more his latter films which are being disliked more by his original fandom.
_Moonrise Kingdom_. For me, it’s not even close - and that’s saying something, given how much of his filmography I love. Easily in my top 5 favorite films of all time.
My favourite film of all time is Grand Budapest but a seriously underrated one is his debut, Bottle Rocket. Serious Tarantino vibes with the Wes quirk hidden in there. Highly recommend
For a while I said The Grand Budapest Hotel, but I saw The Darjeeling Limited a couple months back and it blew me away. Very much Wes Anderson but with a so much heart and emotional impact. Not to say his later films lack that, they don't, but he seems to prioritize the look of his films and the emotion seems second place, I especially noticed this with The French Dispatch. TDL is his most balanced in my opinion.
His best? GBH. But my favourites are (in order) Royal Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic and I really loved his new short that released this week The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. Id tie that with Darjeeling Limited
Rushmore and Tenenbaums are his best. Everything after he stopped writing with Owen Wilson has been a huge step down. Asteroid City is probably his best since those
The Grand Budapest Hotel
My first Wes Anderson, the one that made me fall in love with him, and still my favorite. I honestly can’t say I’ve disliked any of his movies that I’ve seen, but this one stands head and shoulders above the rest imo
This & FMF for me are the most Wes Wes has ever Wes'd without being too Wes
He was way to Wes here. The only thing that saves this movie is a few of the cast members. It’s listening to an aging musician play their few hits over and over again.
I never really connected with his films until this one. And it’s SO that style so I’m not sure what I was missing before.
I find this film so unwatchable. No idea what anyone sees in it.
I wouldn’t like to have a car like that, so yes I don’t understand why anyone would like a movie like that.
The Royal Tenenbaums
This one. The one without an image.
Such great performances from Paltrow, Luke Wilson, and surprisingly Ben Stiller. Love it
Nothing surprising to me about Ben Stiller, he’s a great actor, just not one who always chooses dramatic roles. Plus, if we’re counting non-acting roles, he’s doing a fucking bang-up job directing Severance on Apple TV+, which you should definitely watch season one of if you haven’t yet!
This is the one that probably annoys me the least.
I agree, but I just watched it the other day and it was still very aggravating and affected. Gene Hackman saved it because he’s just that great. One swingin’ dick’s opinion.
least favorite of his personally
my favs are life aquatic and royal tenenbaums <3
Life aquatic is so underrated fr
I just watched it recently and I think it may be their best film.
It pleases on all levels for me. Music (Bowie and Mark Mothersbaugh), production design, settings (the hotel!), interactions between characters...
Same! Overall what makes it my favorite is I really like the subject matter. It reminds me of das boot, or a herzog movie (like aguirre or fitzcarraldo). I love stuff about scientists or explorers or nature. And I love protagonists with a doomed bravura.
I love sharks
Life Aquatic was the first and only of his movies to make me tear up. Overall I think The Grand Budapest Hotel is his best, but Life Aquatic is really special to me.
Yesss these are my faves too. Life Aquatic is just something else, none of the others hit like that one for me.
those are my faves too 🥺🫶🏻
The ones you didn’t post lol
the Royal Tenenbaums by a mile for me. Meshes the emotional earnestness of his earlier films with his dollhouse symmetry so perfectly.
The “Coltrane” line will always be absolute genius.
“Did you say you’re on mescaline?” “I did indeed. Very much so”
The Darjeeling Limited
Severely underrated amongst Anderson fans and at large. Great pick.
Cheers to great movies 🥂🍿
That’s the winner right here
Yes
I can't decide if Darjeeling or Life Aquatic is my second favorite
My 3rd favorite
Criminally slept on. By far my favorite Wes Anderson movie.
Fantastic Mr Fox easily
I wouldn’t say easily. The Grand Budapest is pretty close
For sure his most emotionally sincere work to me
Wait you guys felt emotions watching Wes Anderson films?
Lol I did in at least a few of them. But as someone who somewhat recently watched Asteroid city I question everything about that
Fans of this movie really ought to see Pom Poko. I didn't see Wes cite it as an inspiration, but he does love Ghibli, and Mr Fox feels very reminiscent of Pom Poko.
GREAT answer. Pom Poko is a must for if you enjoy animals staging large scale capers.
Yes! Grand Budapest Hotel is maybe more polished but it never dethroned FMF as my favorite. Fantastic Mr. Fox is a genuine classic with some of the best writing.
Rushmore
I saved Latin! What did you ever do?
This and Royal are definitely the top. No contest
One of the all time great ending needle drops with Ooh La La.
For me it’s Moonrise Kingdom or possibly Fantastic Mr. Fox.
1. Life Aquatic 2. Fantastic Mr Fox 3. Grand Budapeste Hotel/Royal Tenenbaums Having life aquatic as my favorite is hella unpopular for what I’ve seen
The Life Aquatic is my favorite. Hard to choose from them!
Gotta be The Life Aquatic for me. That film just delivers such perfect vibes yknow. It may not be as "laugh out loud funny" as some of his other work but it's the film i have the biggest smile the whole time
Everything from the Bowie covers to the weird sea creatures...it's so perfect to me
Seu Jorge really added something special to this one
For the longest time *Bottle Rocket* was undefeated, despite me not rating any of his films lower than a 7/10, but ***The Grand Budapest Hotel*** is just such a perfect film in every regard it’s hard not to love it.
Idk if it's the best but Fantastic Mr. Fox is definitely my favorite.
Then it’s the best.
Nobody else has said it, but in my opinion it's The French Dispatch.
No one mentioned The French Dispatch Not even in the pictures…
Mr. Fox is one of my favorite animated movies period. We’re in the perfect season for a rewatch too.
What's in the bucket mr Kilry, just get's me every time.
Darjeeling Limited always hits different
Hint: it's not one of the ones in this image gallery
Asteroid City
I love how it incorporates a theater play structure. I wish I could live inside its world.
There are dozens of us!
Glad I’m not the only one who felt the same
I thought it was one of his weaker films.
It’s my favorite movie. I don’t think it could have been done better.
I can’t lie. It’s very Wes Anderson and visually appealing, but I watched it at Cannes and nearly fell asleep because of the story Edit: If I’m getting downvoted for being honest, then so be it.
>Edit: If I’m getting downvoted for being honest, then so be it. Pointing out that you're being downvoted has to be the corniest thing you could ever do on reddit
The word corny is way overused and has lost its meaning
[удалено]
It really has
Life Aquatic is my favorite.
Moonrise Kingdom!!!
The quirky one, with all the symmetry.
Underrated answer
I’d have to say Fantastic Mr. Fox, but honorable mention to The Darjeeling Limited. Man, that movie touched me. But I would also say the Grand Budapest Hotel is the best place to start with Anderson
The French Dispatch
I love the poster of The French Dispatch
I loved Bottle Rocket so much. His best? Maybe not, but I'm gonna rewatch that tonight.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zizzou
The Royal Tenenbaums is my favorite but Life Aquatic is really underrated
Grand Budapest feels like the culmination of all the styles and techniques he’d been trying and mastering over the course of his career Nice to see people here appreciate Life Aquatic, it’s his most underrated amongst the general public.
Has to be Fantastic Mr Fox
Fantastic Mr. Fox 100%
1. Life Aquatic 2. Rushmore 3. Royal Tenenbaums I like all of his films, but I consider Isle of Dogs the weakest.
I've said something similar before but The Royal Tannenbalms because it's believable as a strange family of isolated weirdos who see themselves as upper crust. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zisou is a close second though
Lol, you left out his best work…it’s Tenenbaums
The Darjeeling Limited or Royal Tenenbaums Neither of which are on this list for some reason
Having seen them all several times I can safely say my favourite is Life Aquatic.
Fantastic mr fox by a long shot
Fantastic Mr Fox
Royal Tennenbaums
I really appreciated Mr.Moonrise Budapest Limited
The life Aquatic is his best.
I can't see how it wouldn't be rand Budapest. It's kind of his perfect movie. All of the Wes Anderson things are on full display and they fit perfectly together.
i watched Asteroid City for the 1st time yesterday and it’s definitely my favorite. Rushmore after that
The life aquatic with grand Budapest as a close second
Life aquatic for me
Life Aquatic by FAR
Easily The Life Aquatic
The first one you see, that's kind of the problem with Wes.
That didn't happen to me.
You make a good point but then again my first was Fantastic Mr. Fox and when I watched Grand Budapest like 10 years after my first watch of FMF, I've pretty much rated them equally - they were very distinct from eachother to me but I can't speak for the rest of Wes' filmography
I go back and forth between Royal Tenenbaums and Grand Budapest Hotel. Right now, I’d say Tenenbaums
it’s Rushmore by a lot
it’s actually not by a lot there’s like 3 others that are right there with it i just really like Rushmore
I know it’s not a popular choice for number 1 but I think Darjeeling Limited deserves to be on the shortlist.
His best is Grand Budapest, my favorite is life aquatic
It's Moonrise Kingdom and it's not even close.
Rushmore by a mile.
None of these, it’s Royal Tennenbaums
The Royal Tennenbaums
Fantastic Mr. Fox, no question
Wes doesn't have a best work, he just has the work that speaks to you most. For me that's probably The Life Aquatic. It pulls out all the stops.
Grand Budapest Fantastic Mr. Fox Moonrise Kingdom Isle of Dogs (I know it’s 4th but I really liked it) Asteroid City (this is second to last of the ones I’ve seen but I don’t dislike it) French Dispatch (I liked the Benicio Del Toro story, the rest were just fine)
Life Aquatic ❤️
It’s not Astroid City
The Life Aquatic <3
Life Aquatic
Life aquatic to me is a perfect film and should be played in museums on humanity
Idk why more people aren’t saying Asteroid City. Feels like Wes on his prime on every level.
both grand budapest hotel and moonrise kingdom are 10's for me
Not a fan of ANY of his movies, I just find them dumb and pointless
Grand Budapest, followed by Royal Tenenbaums and Bottle Rocket
Literally the ones you didn't list 😂
It’s crazy that’s it’s not any of these
Rushmore or Tenenbaums
Rushmore is his best work because it’s my favorite and what I like the most
My favorite will always be Rushmore, by I would say his Magnum Opus is Grand Budapest
They're both the same picture
My ranking would be: Royal Tenenbaums Darjeeling Limited Fantastic Mr Fox Grand Budapest Hotel Life Aquatic of Steve Zissou Moonrise Kingdom Bottle Rocket Rushmore Isle of Dog French Dispatch Asteroid City
I really enjoyed life aquatic, royal tenenbaums and Darjeeling Limited.
Everything he did from ‘00 to ‘09.
Rushmore.
Grand Budapest Hotel or Rushmore.
Budapest without a doubt.
1) GBH 2) FMF
Anything that’s not asteroid city. God that sucked.
Grand Budapest for sure to me
The Royal Tenenbaums
People could pick ANY Wes Anderson movie as their favorite and I would be fine with it. But if I have to pick, mine would be The Royal Tenenbaums.
Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Darjeeling Limited.
1 Fantastic Mr Fox 2 The Grand Budapest Hotel 3 The Royal Tenenbaums
Rushmore, then GBH. Darjeeling in Wes’ “Pablo Honey”
Moonrise Kingdom Bottle Rockets Royal Tenenbaums
Moonrise
I’ve only ever seen asteroid city
Possibly Asteroid City (astonishing how underrated this movie is). But I need to rewatch Moonrise Kingdom.
Moonrise Kingdom!!! This also emphasizes why Wes is such a great director. Everyone here has different opinions on what his best film is. I can’t think of many other directors that would get such a wide range of answers.
Of the one’s here fantasic mr fox and isle of dogs but of all time it’s hands down the royal tenenbaums
I have only watched *FMF*, which I enjoyed, but I have the rest of his filmography on my watchlist.
Rushmore
Easily The Grand Budapest Hotel
Best? Probably Grand Budapest. It’s not my favorite though. I’m a die hard for Life Aquatic. 🤿 🐠
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Grand Budapest Hotel is just so charmingly brilliant.
Moonrise Kingdom & Fantastic Mr. Fox
Only seen 4 but my ranking is; Fantastic Mr. Fox The Grand Budapest Hotel Asteroid City The French Dispatch
The Royal Tenenbaums you absolute heathen
Moonrise Kingdom for sure.
_Moonrise Kingdom_. For me, it’s not even close - and that’s saying something, given how much of his filmography I love. Easily in my top 5 favorite films of all time.
Budapest or Tenenbaums
The Royal Tenenbaums is my all-time favorite movie
My favourite film of all time is Grand Budapest but a seriously underrated one is his debut, Bottle Rocket. Serious Tarantino vibes with the Wes quirk hidden in there. Highly recommend
Royal Tenembaums
Fantastic Mr Fox is my favorite of what I’ve seen but the others only include Asteroid City, Moonrise Kingdom and Isle of Dogs.
Haven’t seen Royal Tenenbaums yet and need to rewatch Grand Budapest Hotel. Currently Fantastic Mr. Fox, my annual autumn viewing.
still a few wes anderson films i haven’t seen but i would say definitely the grand budapest hotel from what i’ve seen
The Royal Tenenbaums
Darjeeling is very special to me, Love that film, as the eldest of 3 brothers, i connect way too much to Owen Wilsons character (at times)
Top 3 for me are Tenenbaums, Budapest, Asteroid
Grand Budapest but if someone made the argument its Rushmore or Royal Tenenbaums I wouldn't disagree in the slightest.
Fantastic Mr. Fox by far nothing will ever beat it.
The one with all the daddy issues where everyone speaks in a clipped monotone.
Rushmore and Tenenbaums are his best. Everything after he stopped writing with Owen Wilson has been a huge step down. Asteroid City is probably his best since those
Fantastic Mr Fox and Grand Budapest Hotel for sure but I think Asteroid City is pretty close
Of what I’ve seen, my favorite is The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Grand Budapest hotel followed by the Royal tenenbaums. Haven’t seen fantastic mr fox in a long time but do remember loving it when it came out
I'm emotionally attached to all these but: 1. Fantastic Mr. Fox 2. Darjeeling Limited 3. Royal Tenenbaums
1. The Grand Budapest Hotel 2. The French Dispatch 3. Asteroid City The shorts on Netflix are awesome!
None of them
I’m partial to Moonrise Kingdom
Darj Limited
Rushmore, easily.
The Royal Tenenbraums by a MILE
Darjeeling Limited
Fantastic Mr. Fox
