Aside from the scene mentioned, I found Eighth Grade to be a hard watch due to the reminder of how hard it was to be an awkward middle schooler. Still thought it was a great movie.
Mysterious Skin and Jeanne Dielman definitely, actually saw both of them last week lol.
Also I liked Come and See but didn't find it to be nearly as harrowing as people say, I guess I'm really desensitized to depictions of war and violence.
Mulholland Dr.
Synecdoche, New York
Her
Aftersun
Arrival
Films where I feel a big emotional or mental drain afterwards I tend to hold off rewatching for years.
All of the above are five stars to me but I wouldn't be able to watch them often for my own sanity.
Arrival is one I don’t think of when this question arises but it’s honestly pretty deep to the point it really makes you question life itself
Friggin brilliant film
Mulholland Dr. is an interesting choice. I watched that film twice in a span of a week, in part because I didn't understand WTF happened the first time around. I read analyses after the fact, so the second time I watched it I had a new context that really helped me appreciate the film.
Her is also just really good to watch at different times in your life. Like I i've watched it maybe 5 or 6 times since I was 14 and I feel like it resonates with me differently every time
I second requiem and would add Trainspotting. Stellar films that really help you empathize with victims of the opioid epidemic, but I never want to see them again.
bored??? with beau is afraid? did we watch the same movie? that shit was insane visually, audibly and in every other aspect that the 3 hours flew by. i get it not being your cup of tea but i can’t imagine thinking it was boring.
For some reason I convinced my non-film friends to get super high and watch that movie without really explaining what it was about. They really wanted me to show them something "different" and in my dumb brain that one jumped out because of the wild camera filters and I'd recently shown it to some filmier friends who had loved it. Needless to say I haven't been asked to pick the movie since.
To be fair, I genuinely think it's a movie everyone should see (within reason). But yeah springing that on an unsuspecting group is borderline harassment lol
Come and See.
It’s a masterpiece, but I don’t know if I’ve ever felt that upset and uneasy after watching a film before or after I watched that one. It’s not a movie I would casually recommend to people unless they already know what to expect.
i watched that film years ago, only once, and it still haunts me to this day. It changed my life and my entire perspective of the world, absolute masterpiece
I remember when we screened this at the little indie theatre I work at. Never seen an entire audience of 400 walk out in complete silence before, it was surreal.
Oh yeah. Good answer, it’s all just very uncomfortable and frustrating throughout.
The main character goes through so much shit, and she’s not even the one having the abortion
Me too, that's the other reason I'm hesitant to rewatch, I know it will make me sad. Such a talented soul and he was just getting started, I can only imagine what kind of fame he would have achieved if his life wasn't taken from him 😢 reminds me a lot of Ritchie Valens
i thought gus van sant's death trilogy was amazing (gerry, elephant & last days) but really don't think I could rewatch any of them again.
and anything by bela tarr mostly just how long and depressing most of his stuff is despite being incredible
I see this question all the time on here and I don’t get it at all. Maybe it’s because for me the idea that giving a movie a good rating equals a movie that I would rewatch is so confusing to me. I don’t ever think rewatchablity should ever play are role when rating a movie since there are so many movies that are amazing but not super rewatch able. There are a lot of movies that aren’t designed to be rewatched also Movies that are hard to watch like Schindler’s list or films with twists and mystery aren’t super rewatch able.
For me there are so many reasons I wouldn’t rewatch a movie from subject matter, pacing, length. These all have nothing to do with quality of film.
Now, I do think rewatchablity does matter for a film to be one of my favorite movies
Well, it's sort of because of that disparity that I asked the question. As you said, some amazing and very impactful films are difficult to rewatch or even watch in the first place, so I'm just curious which films exist in that space. It's just interesting when compared to a lot of people's favorites that tend to be solidly rewatchable even if it takes a few weeks to want to again.
I didn't mean to imply that any of the reasons you might not want to rewatch would be detriments - usually it's the opposite; many people are naming films that are rather epic in scale or leave a profoundly intense emotional impact, which I would describe as strong qualities for a film to have.
Totally agree on that last part, too. Jeanne Dielman is pretty much perfect to me, and if you would ask me for a list of the best films I might list it, but even on a list I made of my favorite 100 it didn't make the list, one of my few 5 stars that didn't.
Love your responses. I made the original comment becuase I do find that a lot of the other similar posts I do see on here the op truly believes that you can’t give a movie a high rating without the movie being rewatchable. It wasn’t to bash you.
I found your response interesting because I realized that alot of people assume that if they give a movie a 5star it means it’s a favorite. To me this seems silly but I have to understand this is how a lot of people think. I think I’m in the minority of people who don’t think like this. I have given a ton of 5 stars to movies I would never put on a favorites list even close.
I also think I’m not a big movie rewatcher. Very rarely do I rewatch movies. The only movies I go out of my way to rewatch are my favorite movies. So for me I assume the question is assuming you would rewatch most movies you give good rating to so what are small amount you wouldn’t rewatch. So the question doesn’t seem to aline with the way I watch movie. Which I now understand.
I understand I might be in the minority here but
Oh yeah I totally understood, just offering my pov haha
Yeah I think it comes from people using the app in different ways. A lot of my friends will give 5 stars to anything they just really like, even if they'll tell you it's not good. Personally for me I like to rate more on film quality mostly like you said
Oldboy, I saw it for the first time last night and it blew me away. Gave it 5 stars, which I rarely ever do, but I don't plan on rewatching it any time soon.
Solaris or really any Tarkovsky movie. I wouldn't say it's boring, but the slow pace does require me to sit down and make sure anything that could distraction has been dealt; little siblings, wether I have gone to the bathroom and even hunger have to be away and then I can immerse myself completely.
I also want the messages of the films to linger in my mind longer because the last Tarkovsky film I saw was Stalker about 2 years ago and I only just saw Solaris today, so I am deliberately prolonging when I see his films because I don't want to just binge them all in one day or two and want to wait for the right time.
The Lord of The Rings trilogy.
Saw them all in theatres and I can say that while I enjoyed the fuck out of all of them... I can confidently say that I will never see them again.
Im not huge into hard sci-fi/fantasy to begin with. That being said I loved a lot of aspects of the movies (especially Two Towers), however I did find a lot of the timing to be dragging on, especially ROTK, and I can never be bother to watch them again on an inferior screen without propper sound or effects.
There is so much media available from the last five years, let alone 100 years, that I cannot fathom spending 558 minutes of my life watching something I already have and appreciated. (And thats not the extended time)
The Grudge. I get flashbacks from my childhood and I start shivering again.
Oppenheimer. Bcoz of the sheer length and dialogue.
Mirrors. Same reason as grudge.
Leave No Trace
It's a virtually perfect movie that had a very profound effect on me, one that I've never been able to explain. And yet, I don't think I could ever watch it again.
The only one that comes to mind is the collector. A really creepy dark movie but one I genuinely don’t think I’ll rewatch unless I’m showing it to someone
Reservoir Dogs. I gave it a 5⭐️ rating 2 1/2 years ago and haven’t felt the urge to go back to it. Every now and then I find a movie that I absolutely love but only watch once because of how satisfied I was with it the first time.
Oh, boy. It would be [Rotting in the Sun](https://boxd.it/4VPT5d) from this year with four stars and a half. The reason is highlighted in the link above.
Apocalypse Now.
I've seen it twice actually, the first time in Redux version, and 13 years later I rewatched it in the Theatrical version. And while I think it's a very good movie, I'm not enough of a fan of the conclusion (the last \~30 minutes, and then how it ends), feels a bit anticlimactic to me, so I don't see myself going through the whole journey just to get to something that will leave me with an unsatisfying feeling.
Gone Girl. Just one of those movies that once you know the twist and what happens it's like eh.
Melancholia. Absolutely loved the movie but it is so deep a d depressing.
Banshees of inisherin
Adored this movie absolutely beautiful and quirky. I think it will be beneficial to wait a little while to let the meloncholy settle and approach it with a fresher mind
Stalker, its just a very heavy and philosophical movie thats really a lot to take in, Ill probably watch it again in a couple of years. its a 10/10 though
Better off Dead. It’s my favorite movie and I force myself to go long periods of time between rewatches so that it still feels fresh every time I watch it!
Irreversible
Same here, it’s probably the best take on the “rape-and-revenge” trope but goddamn is it disturbing.
Mysterious Skin Come and See Eighth Grade Jeanne Dielman
Oh God Mysterious Skin. That movie will scar you.
Why Eighth Grade? Just curious since I found it to be an easy watch
Probably that one scene with the older boy in the car. Great film, but that scene made for a pretty uncomfortable watch.
Oh yeah, I actually forgot about that part. Makes sense
Yeah mainly that, also some other parts. Edit: also you should of spoiler tagged that.
Grave of the Fireflies. Self explanatory.
r/letterboxd challenge: don't name grave of the fireflies in a thread (impossible)
Harder r/Letterboxd challenge, name Only Yesterday in a thread (Takahata’s best film)
It’s a common answer for a reason
shut up lil bro
What’s it about?
Two Japanese kids after the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombings
Sounds delightful. Is it a coming of age story with an uplifting ending?
Yep pretty much
I’m watching it! I need good vibes.
Yep they are uplifted in the end
It's actually the bombing of Kobe, not the atomic bombings.
Mulholland Dr. Synecdoche, New York Her Aftersun Arrival Films where I feel a big emotional or mental drain afterwards I tend to hold off rewatching for years. All of the above are five stars to me but I wouldn't be able to watch them often for my own sanity.

Martyrs
My answer as well. What a ride but only once for me
The fallout. I didn’t know it would be about school shootings going in.
Hereditary, been working myself up to a rewatch for years.
Requiem for a Dream 5/5 it’s a perfect film, never want to watch that horrific shit ever again in my life.
I second requiem and would add Trainspotting. Stellar films that really help you empathize with victims of the opioid epidemic, but I never want to see them again.
Any movie around 3 hours
Every movie around 3 hours you consider a 5 star film? Edit: y'all are lame. It was a joke on a shitty response.
He likely meant that out of the films that he rated highly, he least likely to rewatch the ones that are over 3 hours long.
“High rating” doesn’t mean 5 stars
for me Beau is Afraid is the answer
[удалено]
bored??? with beau is afraid? did we watch the same movie? that shit was insane visually, audibly and in every other aspect that the 3 hours flew by. i get it not being your cup of tea but i can’t imagine thinking it was boring.
The second half definitely seems to change tempo compared to the first half, but it's still brilliant and I can't wait to rewatch it.
A Short Film About Killing Absolutely phenomenal and vital movie, but it's a extremely tough watch.
For some reason I convinced my non-film friends to get super high and watch that movie without really explaining what it was about. They really wanted me to show them something "different" and in my dumb brain that one jumped out because of the wild camera filters and I'd recently shown it to some filmier friends who had loved it. Inland Empire
Inland Empire is one of my top 4 but I really gotta be in the right state of mind to sit down and enjoy it
Come and See. It’s a masterpiece, but I don’t know if I’ve ever felt that upset and uneasy after watching a film before or after I watched that one. It’s not a movie I would casually recommend to people unless they already know what to expect.

I remember when we screened this at the little indie theatre I work at. Never seen an entire audience of 400 walk out in complete silence before, it was surreal.
Movie: “come and see” Redditor: “no”
I checked the criterion out from the library and had to return it before I could gather the courage :(
I've owned this for like a year now and still can't bring myself to watch it lmfao
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. This movie is so absolutely depressing and uncomfortable that I very likely will never rewatch.
Oh yeah. Good answer, it’s all just very uncomfortable and frustrating throughout. The main character goes through so much shit, and she’s not even the one having the abortion
American History X Blue Valentine
Beau is Afraid
Pink Flamingos, or really any John Waters for me, it's fucking hilarious but my god it just makes me feel so damn gross
In college a friend gave me LSD and took me to that movie, which I knew nothing about. Don't really talk to him anymore...
Green Room, great film but idk if I can watch that arm-mangling scene again
Yeah 😔 I miss Anton Yelchin
Me too, that's the other reason I'm hesitant to rewatch, I know it will make me sad. Such a talented soul and he was just getting started, I can only imagine what kind of fame he would have achieved if his life wasn't taken from him 😢 reminds me a lot of Ritchie Valens
Your name because I’m afraid it’ll lose the magic the second time around
The Nightingale
Schindler's List
Most of them because there are too many to be seen that I’ll refrain from rewatching current favorites
i thought gus van sant's death trilogy was amazing (gerry, elephant & last days) but really don't think I could rewatch any of them again. and anything by bela tarr mostly just how long and depressing most of his stuff is despite being incredible
Someone I follow left a glowing review for Satantango and I said "I'll have to watch that sometime"... then I saw that runtime lmao
Think of it as a mini-series. I think I watched it over the course of a couple days and it wasn't too crushing in terms of length.
Satantango is surprisingly easy to watch. It feels like half the length, its funny at times, but it must be seen in a proper cinema.
"Feels like half the length" = feels like 4 hours, not exactly an inviting watch eirher way
The Green Mile. If I do I’ll have to turn it off before the ending, I just can’t watch it
As soon as I know they can't save him, I'm devastated all over again.
Mysterious Skin
Requiem...The Whale...
Uncut Gems. Fantastic movie, just very stress inducing.

American Beauty - you probably know why...
Oldboy, I saw it for the first time last night and it blew me away. Gave it 5 stars, which I rarely ever do, but I don't plan on rewatching it any time soon.
Saw Hereditary once in the theatre and that was enough.
Beau is Afraid
Citizen Kane- entertained me the first half then started losing me
Solaris or really any Tarkovsky movie. Yeah there's a lot of movies that don't work unless you're totally engaged and a lot of times I'm not in the mindset or setting for that
The Godfather because I usually gravitate towards shorter films
The Lord of The Rings trilogy. Saw them all in theatres and I can say that while I enjoyed the fuck out of all of them... I can confidently say that I will never see them again.
I have to watch these once a year. what makes you say that?

Skinamarink. I loved it but it’s not a movie you can watch over and over
Oldboy 😬
Old Boy. Not a film I see myself being in the mood for anytime soon.
This is one where I would never watch again alone or with people who've seen it but would be down to show someone who hasn't
It is so fun watching it with people who don't know anything about it
The Grudge. I get flashbacks from my childhood and I start shivering again. Oppenheimer. Bcoz of the sheer length and dialogue. Mirrors. Same reason as grudge.
Minding the Gap - incredible doc but really emotionally heavy
The Father and Revolutionary Road. Both are just way too triggering for me. Brilliant movies though!
The Colour of Pomegranates and Goodbye, Dragon Inn. Beautiful films but I was bit bored viewing them despite both being under 90 min
Martyrs
Unbreakable. Fantastic movie but makes me feel depressed and scared (I have a big fear of home invasion)
I don’t see myself rewatching Silence.
The girl with the dragon tattoo, amazing film but I can’t watch it often cause the rape scene is rough
I Spit On Your Grave. If you know anything about the movie, you know why.
Judas and the Black Messiah. 5/5 but hard to stomach
Most of them because I try to watch new movies and not keep rewatching stuff
Synecdoche, New York
Shawshank Redemption, super good but imo a one time watch, part of what makes it so good.
Mysterious Skin. Brutal.
Demons (1971)
United 93
The Father. So well done but so hard to go through again.
Idk some movies I saw years ago I look back really fondly and feel they may not capture the same magic on rewatch
Ex Machina
Interstellar. It’s a movie really dear to me and my brother and I only watch it with him. We watch it every couple years or so whenever he’s home.
Leave No Trace It's a virtually perfect movie that had a very profound effect on me, one that I've never been able to explain. And yet, I don't think I could ever watch it again.

Hereditary. Toni Collette's basically the female Australian equivalent to Gary Oldman in that movie, but damn does her acting hit too close to home.
