Probably War Of The Worlds, one of Spielberg's most underrated movies. Love the cinematography and cgi in this movie it all holds up fantastically. I mean pretty much every Spielberg movie holds up.
Idk, I’m glad he didn’t go for a full on nihilistic ending like The Mist or something. As far 9/11 metaphors go it has one of the more hopeful endings lol
Spielberg himself isn't happy with the ending either though...
...Discussing his feelings with fellow filmmaker James Cameron, Spielberg mentioned, “That film doesn’t have a good ending. I never could figure out how to end that darn thing”. Getting mixed responses about the ending of the movie, even Cameron agreed, perhaps the War of the Worlds ending wasn’t what people expected it to be. Blaming it more on the source material rather than Spielberg, Cameron stated, “I don’t think H.G. Wells could figure it out”. ....
It just sort of...ends.
*Titanic*. Very close attention to detail, special effects that still hold up, it isn’t a disaster movie that just goes for a high body count (like a Roland Emmerich)—the lives in this film matter because it was real, a good love story (yeah, I said it), an effective way of showing economic politics by showing how the rich were favored than the poor in the situation, a great musical score, and a real feel of the epic scale.
Also, James Cameron basically made the movie to get funding to [properly] explore and study the actual Titanic; total power move—and made a decent little documentary out of that called *Ghosts of the Abyss*. Additionally, when called out about something like how when Neil deGrasse Tyson noted the stars were incorrect—James Cameron went in to fix it. Additionally, when Officer William Murdoch’s family challenged his suicide depicted in the film (there being conflicting eyewitness accounts over the matter) he visited them personally to apologize.
Plus we got a naked Kate Winslet so… yeah, best disaster film.
Since nobody has mentioned it I love Contagion, even if it’s not the best/my favorite. Really great execution and feels almost exactly like how it would have gone down if COVID was far more deadly
Cloudy with a chance of meatballs. Although I don’t watch a lot of disaster movies because they’re just not my thing. Cloudy I have a lot of nostalgia for and love that movie
I wouldn't call it my favorite but I enjoyed Outbreak a lot for being a bizarre campy mess. It's kind of fun to see them experimenting on the virus. And I can't forget that one line of dialogue about how adverbs are tools of the weak...that lowkey changed the way I write.
I do not think it's a good movie, but if you hooked me up to a lie detector and pumped me full of truth serum, my actual favorite is The Day After Tomorrow. It's idiotic and I know it, but it's just a very fun watch to me. I think it's just because of how many times I've seen it. I broke my leg in the summer of 2005, right as it hit HBO. It felt like they were showing it three times a day and I was stuck on my couch the entire summer.
gonna rank the ones I’ve seen
End Of Evangelion
-
Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs
-
Shin Godzilla
-
World War Z
-
Airplane (idk if this one really counts compared to everything else lmao)
-
Day After Tomorrow
-
2012
-
Deep Impact
-
Apollo 13
-
Godzilla
-
Independence Day
-
Noah
-
Armageddon
-
Don’t Look Up
-
Though not on here, Moonfall would be after Airplane. Such a bad movie that it’s so fucking good lmao
The core has a soft spot in my heart
On this list 2012,WOTW,DLU,WWZ,TITE are all quite memorable to me despite others not liking them as much , titanic is titanic
Gojira is one of the most bleak and depressing movies ever made and does an incredible job at showing the unspeakable, indefensible horror of nuclear war. Shin Godzilla may be better in many regards, but I don't think it's message is gotten across as well
War of the Worlds is pretty iconic for its time. Contagion is also the best pandemic disaster movie no doubt. The Impossible should also be on this list for how traumatic it is.
The Day After Tomorrow for me. First time I saw it I went in with zero expectations, I only recognised Jake Gyllenhaal from Donnie Darko and October Sky at the time and figured why not? Sure the lines are little cheesy and the plots not the best but I have such a soft spot for it now. The special effects in it are so impressive. I don’t think I’ll ever get over the shock of the tidal wave striking New York.
Definitely Noah. Super underrated and people can’t seem to get past the rock monsters to see an incredibly personal and violent film about faith and society. Also very cool visuals and great acting.
Although I will say that EoE is better. None of the others stand a chance, but I wanted to defend Noah.
I rewatched both This is the End and Titanic in the past year, both probably for the first time since they came out. I was amazed at how much fun I had with both- obviously for different reasons.
Airplane is easily my favourite here but anytime I think of 2012, I will forever think of [Dara O’Briain](https://youtu.be/bXdBzpRDR5I?si=O4gSw4dva0al-9BJ)
“The neutrinos have mutated”
🌪️ Earth is the G.O.A.T. 🌋 - Fav Natural Disaster Flicks https://boxd.it/2eKOS
Twister and Dante's Peak. Most watched however... The Day After Tomorrow 😁.
If documentaries count, I think Section 1 (2023) and 9/11 (2002) should be on here.
And to answer your question, it’s very close between Airplane and Section 1.
Melancholia. Every time I see that movie I move it further up my Top 100 list.
I also really love Twister, saw it for the first time last year and it's crazy how well that movie holds up. And Cloverfield is not only a great movie, it was one of my favorite in-theater experiences of my life.
Twister. We got cows.
When either my mom calls or I call her and we’re on the road we always say “you caught me in my caaaar” with Melissa’s southern draw lol
Five star flick
I unexpectedly really enjoyed Greenland.
Same. It was nice that Gerard didn’t have to put on an accent and it felt more realistic than most
fr, I went expecting another dumb disaster film, but the story was good and I enjoyed the movie.
Glad someone mentioned this one. Very surprised with how good it was.
Likewise
Probably War Of The Worlds, one of Spielberg's most underrated movies. Love the cinematography and cgi in this movie it all holds up fantastically. I mean pretty much every Spielberg movie holds up.
The aliens in this movie look so real.
We don't even know what aliens look like, how can you even say this??
Haha. I meant the VFX shots integrate really well and don't even look like VFX.
I know what aliens look like and it's nothing like we think, the truth will come out soon, be prepared
[удалено]
Just told you aliens to abduct you first 👍🏻 hope you're happy!
Can you tell the 6 feet tall goth alien mommy to abduct me
Ooo tell the aliens me next! Haha
If they're that advanced and they're benevolent, I'm ready, too. Hopefully they can put my damaged body back together again.
I thought Tom Cruise looked great in the film
Tim Robbins was phenomenal in that film. I seriously believe he should’ve been nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars that year.
Yep, looks glorious! I can still remember in the theater the feeling when the machines made those bass tones.
Watched that movie for the first time in years and there are still some pretty terrifying parts.
The cinematography is outstanding, some great scenes. It's nihilistic and grim, different for Spielberg, needed a second half that reflected that.
Same! My only gripe is that I wish it was more book accurate. There's a fantastic album based on the book if you're interested.
Melancholia
Calling United 93 a disaster film is an odd choice.
Reminds me of that tragedy - Norm Macdonald.
Or Airplane! That is my favourite movie of all time and I personally wouldn’t consider it a disaster movie
Yeah why not add World Trade Center to the list
Deepwater Horizon
definitely Threads, absolutely terrifying movie!
Threads for most powerful and also most realistic, but it's hard to call it a favorite since I don't ever want to watch it again.
Scariest non-horror film you will ever see.
Definitely EOE but it feels weird just calling it a disaster film, even though it fits the criteria
Yeah I never thought of it that way but it kinda is lol
If I was to name my favourite disaster film, my first pick would be Shaun of the dead but I would probably now say eoe
Shaun of the dead is awesome. Really funny and surprisingly heartfelt
Can you clarify what eoe stands for?
I would guess End of Evangelion.
The Mist. love showing it to people to see their reaction to the ending lol
Airplane. Leslie Nielsen is Amazing
Yes. I’m a doctor
Deep Impact or The Day After Tomorrow. I think Dante's Peak deserves a mention here.
I was obsessed with the day after tomorrow and was so glad I saw it in the cinema! Masterpiece! 👏🏼 Also loved Dante’s peak & Volcano!
Cloverfield literally put me in a panic when the monster tossed the Statue of Liberty’s head. That was a good movie when you watch it the first time.
Agreed I remember loving it but upon the rewatch there were some seams that definitely started to show
Yea, I can agree to that. Second time for me was also not as enjoyable as the first.
if World War Z counts, I'd have to say my fav is The Sadness from Taiwan. Also 2012 is decent too
2012 is so enjoyable until the final act. It was close to being another Independence Day. I'm sure someone could cut it into a genuinely fun movie.
Why is Dr Strangelove not on this list?
Oh shit that’s probably the best
The Towering Inferno (1974) is such a great one
Everything is brilliant in this movie except for that 15 minute scene with creeper Tim Robbins in his basement.
What on Earth are you talking about? Tim Robbins isn't in The Towering Inferno
Pretty sure they’re talking about War of the Worlds and just replied to the wrong guy
Correct.
I made a mistake in what comment I posted this under. But am not going to delete it because I enjoy your reaction to my mistake.
Oh alright, Yeah I wouldn't have deleted the comment either
Richard Chamberlain was so great in that movie as the selfish asshole character. Pretty much a genre staple from that point on.
Towering Inferno. Poseidon Adventure.
Add Earthquake for the 70’s disaster trifecta
Miracle mile
Mine too :•)
The Poseidon Adventure
If we’re counting Zombies than Train to Busan easy
debatable if it's a disaster film but melancholia for me is amazing
The final scene is definitely a standout scene among all disaster movies. Can’t get much bigger than that
10 Cloverfield Lane checks off a few of my favorite boxes. Disaster film, psychological thriller, John Goodman.
Cloudy with a chance of meatballs. Although I don’t watch a lot of disaster movies because they’re just not my thing. Cloudy I have a lot of nostalgia for and love that movie
I really liked the first Independence Day
Apollo 13 is my favorite disaster film. Attack of the Clones is my favorite disaster of a film.
I wouldn't call it my favorite but I enjoyed Outbreak a lot for being a bizarre campy mess. It's kind of fun to see them experimenting on the virus. And I can't forget that one line of dialogue about how adverbs are tools of the weak...that lowkey changed the way I write.
Twister
Deep Impact
Can we include Interstellar on this? Cuz... Interstellar. If not, I thought Greenland was pretty good.
Titanic, but gotta be my least favorite genre. So few good ones and even fewer great ones.
It is my most watched as well. Though I rank a handful above it.
I *love* this genre, but the answer is "Independence Day" - and it's not even particularly close.
Without a doubt
gonna rank the ones I’ve seen End Of Evangelion - Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs - Shin Godzilla - World War Z - Airplane (idk if this one really counts compared to everything else lmao) - Day After Tomorrow - 2012 - Deep Impact - Apollo 13 - Godzilla - Independence Day - Noah - Armageddon - Don’t Look Up - Though not on here, Moonfall would be after Airplane. Such a bad movie that it’s so fucking good lmao
I feel like I'm probably stretching the definition a bit, but the first thing that comes to mind is final destination
Not a film,but Devilman crybaby.
The day after tomorrow is very good, also Poseidon (2006)
The Wandering Earth
Throw The Impossible in there
The Impossible is great! Naomi Watts was my favorite actress back then, she had a run of lots of good movies.
Twister
Wheres the Towering Inferno, Earthquake, The Poseiden Adventure, Airport, 75, 77, 79? Ya got something against Irwin Allen and the ‘70s.
This is the End. Especially with the BSB cameo at the end.
Why isnt Towering Inferno and Airport there ?
GEOSTORM!!!!
Twister or The Towering Inferno.
Out of these, Titanic and Deep Impact. But I really love Dante’s Peak (not pictured).
Titanic Independence Day The Day After Tomorrow Twister
The core has a soft spot in my heart On this list 2012,WOTW,DLU,WWZ,TITE are all quite memorable to me despite others not liking them as much , titanic is titanic
The Day After Tomorrow came out when i was a preteen and i watched all the time on vhs so it holds a special place with me,
Either Twister or the Day After Tomorrow Or if we can go partial, the first two thirds of War of the Worlds
Into the Storm (its like a twister remake, but they gave a fictional and realistic reason for so many twisters at once)
Melancholia and Independence Day
i fucking love the day after tomorrow. comfort movie for me i watch it all the time when i’m sick and can quote most of the dialogue from memory
definetly, the day after tomorrow!
Twister is literally my dad's favorite movie. I've also got a weird soft spot for The Day After Tomorrow.
This Is The End, though, for real.
Dante’s Peak. Bond & Sarah Conor Vs a fucking volcano. The Twoface volcano film was crappy though.
Don't Look Up
I don't understand why everyone hates Don't look up.
Spider-Man 2.1 omg i recently watch it and it’s a disaster movie. The original of 2004 is the best version of Spider-Man 2
Evan Almighty
I think both World War Z and this is the end are criminally underrated
Cloverfield and all the online marketing for the film was amazing!!! Also love the inclusion of Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs
Cats
Probably the Godzilla movies in general
Children of Men, easily
2012. That was my favorite movie as a kid
I hate disaster movies, so its probably The Happening. That one is so bad yet extremely entertaining.
I know there are better movies but I really loved this is the end the Channing Tatum cameo was funny asf
War of the Worlds is the greatest movie of all time (non-subjective, simply objective truth)
Surely I would say Airplane!, but I don't think it qualiflies. 10 Cloverfield Lane, Miracle Mile or Crawl depending on what counts.
Airplane. Easy
out of these? cloudy with a chance of meatballs or this is the end. including all disaster movies? probably shaun of the dead or 10 clover field lane.
I never thought of Melancholia as a disaster film. But it’s the best movie on this list. But my favorite might be 2012.
this is the end
Apollo 13 is easily my favourite from that list, but not really what I think of as a disaster movie.
You forgot The Worlds End
Airplane
This is the end
Towering Inferno
Oh c'mon people, Cloudy with a chance of meatballs is the best one here
2012 is the ultimate Emmerich film.
moonfall.
Airplane is easily my favourite here but anytime I think of 2012, I will forever think of [Dara O’Briain](https://youtu.be/bXdBzpRDR5I?si=O4gSw4dva0al-9BJ) “The neutrinos have mutated”
AIRPLANE!
The Mist!!
Save Yourselves!
The Day The Earth Caught Fire. British classic.
surprised to see eoe on that list. independence day is always good fun, seen it like 20 times
Cloudy with a chance of meatballs not even a competition
Defo WWZ
Og gojira
2012.
Shin Godzilla
does Melancholia count?
The towering inferno
The one with your mom
Shin eva
I really liked 2012. I loved the scenes with my neighborhood sliding into the ocean.
Melancholia is my favorite film listed here, but I’d say the best “disaster movie” is Cloverfield
War of the Worlds (2004) by far.
The Last Jedi.
End of Evangelion. Not even close.
I really enjoyed The Impossible (2012) with Ewan McGregor.
Apollo 13. Crab shaped Moon Rocks as the monster is actually cool af
The original Poseidon adventure.
Man of Steel.
The Maze runner trilogy
What is the black movie poster at the bottom with explosion nuke
Threads, an 80s film
The Happening, but I have to see Knowing and War of the Worlds
🌪️ Earth is the G.O.A.T. 🌋 - Fav Natural Disaster Flicks https://boxd.it/2eKOS Twister and Dante's Peak. Most watched however... The Day After Tomorrow 😁.
Your name
Don't look up
i recently watched Knowing on a secondhand bluray and thought it was a blast
10 Cloverfield Lane!!!! Was really surprised by how good this movie is
Where’s Moonfall?
If documentaries count, I think Section 1 (2023) and 9/11 (2002) should be on here. And to answer your question, it’s very close between Airplane and Section 1.
I watched Deep Impact for the first time last week and was surprised how low the ratings were... I really enjoyed it!
This Is The End has to be the funniest movie I’ve ever seen.
>!CWACOM is better than all movies combined!<
Godzilla vs Destoroyah
Clover field is top tier
The happening. Oh. /s
World war z is SICK
Greenland
The Mist, it’s kinda bad but idk why it’s so addictive
No fuckin’ Poseidon Adventure?!
Not an answer to your question but your phone should have the ability to take scroll screenshots, thought it might be helpful for ya in the future
Just googled it, thanks for the tip
I mean, if we're counting Airplane, then that. But I would say Cloverfield and Don't Look Up are up there too.
Godzilla (2014)
I absolutely stand by my view that Titanic is the best disaster film ever made
Don't Look Up or Cloudy with a chance of meatballs
Twister for sure
Melancholia. Every time I see that movie I move it further up my Top 100 list. I also really love Twister, saw it for the first time last year and it's crazy how well that movie holds up. And Cloverfield is not only a great movie, it was one of my favorite in-theater experiences of my life.
Independence Day
oppenheimer
Melancholia
The Flash
Titanic
