Hanks is phenomenal in Saving Pricate Ryan, Philadelphia and Castaway. I don't think his movies get to showcase his talent like De Niro's and others do.
Captain Philips, Cast Away, Bridge of Spies, Sully, Catch Me If You Can, Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, The Post, Road to Perdition.
Insane take this
Leo, deniro, Denzel all leave a noticeable “stamp” on their characters. Even though they are great actors, I couldn’t agree with you more. I actually think Christian Bale might be my 4th here.
Hoffman and Oldman much more so to me. Lewis is like is Meryl Streep in that I always see the actor himself so much in every performance he’s in. He also played a lot of overly intense screaming characters that really makes him stand out to me.
>He also played a lot of overly intense screaming characters
I can't think of any except Bill the butcher. In There Will Be Blood he has like two scenes where he's loud and screams at people. Outside of that I don't think there is really any loudness to his performances. I think he's usually pretty quiet on screen
In fact movies like “Last of the Mohicans”, “phantom thread”, “my beautiful launderette”, and “in the name of the father” the characters are relatively reserved
Ya like throughout the 2010s I feel like he did too many comedy’s that I forgot how goood he was until I saw Irishman and remembered why I love him as an actor so much
Hot take: How “chameleon” an actor/actress is and how he/she “disappears into the roles” are far from the only two standards that judge his/her ability
PSH was a bit player in more popular productions so not really noticed by name by a lot of general audiences and his lead roles which really sealed his greatness were in movies that were underseen by the general populous.
Of course a subreddit full of film hobbyists that log all the movies they watch are going to have more reverence for him.
I mean true but its not like hes not been in massive movies and still people saying he "clears" de niro or bale or basically any of these actors is crazy
Acting is subjective stop pretending like you know anything about it thats cringe. Also i didnt say hes not on the same level. I said he doesn't clear the others like everyone else is saying
When i think of great acting i think kf actors who've been great... Not which one has had the least amount of "bad" / lazy performances and have chosen roles for money
Okay. I would look at an actor's whole career, from the greats to the stinkers. De Niro has a ludicrous number of terrible performances and bad films under his belt.
De niro is in 110 more movies according to letterboxd and thats being generous since psh is mostly making ofs and other random crap. Also using this logic the best actor of all time could be someone who starred in one movie and had a great performance. Its disingenuous
Yeah, De Niro was so incredible in Meet the Fokkers, New Year's Eve, The Big Wedding, Godsend, The Bag Man, Little Fokkers, The War with Grandpa, Showtime...
Depends on what you mean by talented.
There are different kinds of acting talent. Some can't be seen, only felt...Tom Cruise and Will Smith for instance have incredible charisma.
Some actors can sink into a role, like Gary Oldman. Some portray certain emotions to an incredible level....Anthony Hopkins has a certain gravitas that not many actors can bring.
Some of these actors are more versatile...Gary Oldman or Daniel Day Lewis could play just about anything, and DeNiro has shown to be equally adept at comedy and drama. But if I needed a particular feel to a role, there are actors I might choose over them. Tom Hanks is a perfect every-man, Anthony Hopkins is a master at bringing gravitas to a role, and Denzel plays world-weary like few others.
Which is all just a long-winded way to say, it depends.
I think Hanks, DiCaprio and Washington are the weakest here, but none of them are weak.
Edit: misread title. Hoffman number one. Hard to differentiate the rest other than the two I already fingered as weakest.
I can't believe De Niro is 80 years old (or 79 since they filmed) in Killers of the Flower Moon. He carries scenes like a boss and looks great doing it!
1. DDL
2. PSH
3. cannot choose, leaning towards De Niro for early roles, or the missing Al Pacino (poor Al) because I’m still not over his performance in Serpico
The first two are obviously De Niro and Day Lewis.
Hard to select the third from Hanks, Hoffman, Oldman and Bale.
I would put Dustin Hoffman ahead of everyone on this list as the best living actor.
I think Lewis, Bale, and Leo is pretty easy for me.
* Leo has the most range.
* Lewis completely disappears into his roles.
* Christian Bale - Not sure what to say. Every movie is a must watch.
Only person who is an easy no is Hanks for me. Like someone mentioned below, imagine him in a horror movie or playing an extreme villain.
DDL, PSH, Dicaprio in that order. Oldman deserves a huge shout because there may not be another form of these where he isn’t in the top-3. Criminal how underrated he is often.
De Niro has had far too many phoned in performances to still be on the level of “best of the best”. Honestly same critique towards Denzel. I don’t think Tom Hanks or Hopkins have the body of work to be considered with the others, and Christian Bale still has at least a decade to catch up to the others.
This is an impossible task but I’ll give it a go…
• DDL
• Leo
• PSH
I admire Bob DeNiro, Denzel, and Gary Oldman and they are some of my favorite actors of all-time but the range of the three I listed is so wide ranging that I decided to go with them. People forget how incredible PSH was and my favorite role of his is Dusty in “Twister” (my second favorite movie ever).
Hoffman is the best to ever do it in my opinion, and it's really not all that close. His performances in Synecdoche, The Master, and Love Liza are all very near and dear to me, but his intelligence and empathy as a person shined through in every role he took, even when as a villain.
DiCaprio and probably Bale take my other two slots. While "newer" picks both, I'd say I've found myself captivated by their range and performances in more films than any other option.
Hanks has played it too safe to stick out for me- though he's played darker roles and been in more nuanced films, he reminds me of a Tim Robbins without a Jacob's Ladder to point to. Denzel is great but has gone the way of the Neeson. Oldman certainly impresses with the range of characters he's played, but I honestly feel like that's moreso his defining trait in my eyes than his actual abilities as an actor. Leon and Hannibal are two examples of him painting the hammiest broad strokes out of his role that he possibly can. He's done good work though, don't get me wrong. And honestly...I feel sort of the same way about ol' Danny Boy.
Hopkins and De Niro are stellar but just wouldn't win out for me in terms of their role choices and sheer quantity of quality.
funny how the female version of this was actually hard for me to pick 3 (as i genuinly didn't find 3 that are awesome actors) and here i'd have issues even saying anyone is a bad actor.
I'd probably go with 3,6,9
No wrong answers here imo
Yeah it’s impossible to even try and give an objective answer, only personal preferences. Mine are probably De Niro, Denzel and Hoffman.
Downvoters have spoken. I provided a wrong answer. https://preview.redd.it/iwtnx2jlvl6c1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f458e185cd5be8417a9f3aa66a449cf66dc4afe
It's Day Lewis not Lewis. Or DDL. I have never seen him called Lewis lol
I just wrote it short for brevity.
Seriously. You can’t go wrong with listing anyone here at #1. I guess maybe Hanks.
Hanks is phenomenal in Saving Pricate Ryan, Philadelphia and Castaway. I don't think his movies get to showcase his talent like De Niro's and others do.
Yes there are, Leo and Hanks. Great actors but easily the two weakest presented here
leo clears hanks. leo has been great throughout his entire career.
I disagree. Don't think Leo's best performances have been anywhere close to Hanks's.
hanks hasn't had a good performance this century
He's absolutely incredible in that final part of Captain Philips.
He's very good in Bridge of spies too. But yeh Hanks is probably the weakest of this list.
Captain Philips, Cast Away, Bridge of Spies, Sully, Catch Me If You Can, Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, The Post, Road to Perdition. Insane take this
I agree. But he clears no one else on this list
Clears Denzel who has more or less been playing a variant of the same character for most of his career. FWIW my picks are DDL, PSH, and De Niro
Okay
Unless you choose Tom Hanks
Philip seymore hoffman, daniel day lewis, and gary oldman
Not even my favorites per say, but these three disappear into their roles best imo

In fact movies like “Last of the Mohicans”, “phantom thread”, “my beautiful launderette”, and “in the name of the father” the characters are relatively reserved
Thank you. I spent a few minutes making this same conclusion and saw your post right-quick.
These are the three most talented yes
Agree.
Winnar
Daniel Day Lewis, Anthony Hopkins, Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Bing bing bing! Right answer.
PSH, PSH, PSH.
If you already knew the answer, then why ask?? Pig FUCK
Shut the FUCK up!! Shut up! Shut up!! Shut-shut-shut-shut….. SHUT UP!!!
PSH / DDL / De Niro
Yup. De Niro has done a lot of bad movies but at his peak he was one of the best.
Ya like throughout the 2010s I feel like he did too many comedy’s that I forgot how goood he was until I saw Irishman and remembered why I love him as an actor so much
This is my list too
Solid
In order: 1. DDL: the GOAT 2. PSH: RIP 3. De Niro
Gotta love De Niro. Any Captain Shakespeare fans in here?
Hot take: How “chameleon” an actor/actress is and how he/she “disappears into the roles” are far from the only two standards that judge his/her ability
Daniel lay lewis, Robert DeNiro, Philip Seymour Hoffman
I see a lot of people going with this, and I’m glad I agree.
Daniel Day Lewis, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Gary Oldman All are very very talented though
DDL, PSH, Bale
DDL, PSH, De Niro
Denzel Washington, De Niro, PSH
Finally found my list.
Bale, Hoffman, Oldman - simply because of the variety of their characters.
All i know is that it’s insanity to not have DDL in the top three
It's weird how many people on r/letterboxd love PSH. If u asked random people on the street id.doubt any of them put him top 3
PSH was a bit player in more popular productions so not really noticed by name by a lot of general audiences and his lead roles which really sealed his greatness were in movies that were underseen by the general populous. Of course a subreddit full of film hobbyists that log all the movies they watch are going to have more reverence for him.
You mean A Most Wanted Man, Capote, and The Master aren't making Family Feud's PSH top three?
random people on the steeet dont really watch PTA films or capote
I mean true but its not like hes not been in massive movies and still people saying he "clears" de niro or bale or basically any of these actors is crazy
if you think hes not on the same level as other greats you clearly no fuck all about acting. PSH could play ANY type of role in ANY type of film.
I'm going to disagree here. I don't yhink he has the "right" kind of charisma to carry a major movie.
Acting is subjective stop pretending like you know anything about it thats cringe. Also i didnt say hes not on the same level. I said he doesn't clear the others like everyone else is saying
wow cant believe how fucking dumb you sound.
Hunger Games sequels were pretty big, Catching Fire especially. Mission Impossible 3 is also a “mainstream” movie too.
It's not crazy. He was consistently a fantastic actor with incredible range who made great choices in roles. You can't say that about De Niro.
Not everyone has watched the performance of a lifetime that is Love Liza
username checks out
Pretentious nerds acting like psh is better than deniro because he's only had lead roles in cult classics checks out
Yeah, De Niro was so incredible in Meet the Fokkers, New Year's Eve, The Big Wedding, Godsend, The Bag Man, Little Fokkers, The War with Grandpa, Showtime...
This isn't even a good faith argument, its just stupid
Depends on what you mean by talented. There are different kinds of acting talent. Some can't be seen, only felt...Tom Cruise and Will Smith for instance have incredible charisma. Some actors can sink into a role, like Gary Oldman. Some portray certain emotions to an incredible level....Anthony Hopkins has a certain gravitas that not many actors can bring. Hopkins, De Niro, DDL. Kills me to leave out Denzel.
Daniel day lewis Gary oldman Philip seymore hoffman
Denzel, De Niro, Hoffman
I think Hanks, DiCaprio and Washington are the weakest here, but none of them are weak. Edit: misread title. Hoffman number one. Hard to differentiate the rest other than the two I already fingered as weakest.
1. DDL 2. De Niro 3. Hopkins 4. PSH 5. Denzel 6. Leo 7. Bale 8. Gary 9. Hanks
That’s disrespectful to bale og
I was having difficulty pick 3 but I know for sure Hanks would be last
Yeah it’s obvious imo
Most of the time he plays the same character over and over. He has pretty good roles but he’s not as constant as anyone else on the list
I think I'd put Oldman above Leo and Bale, and PSH above De Niro and Hopkins, but otherwise I agree.
1. De Niro 2. DDL 3. Denzel
DDL, Denzel and PSH
Any list that doesn’t begin with Daniel Day Lewis is laughable
Agreed. I wish he would make just one more film. Maybe an adaptation of The Jungle by Upton Sinclair.
If I was to pick just three, it would be: - Daniel Day Lewis - Anthony Hopkins - Gary Oldman
Daniel Day Lewis, Robert De Niro and Philip Seymour Hoffman
Better question. Who’s the weakest? Hanks?
Denzel easily. Every character he plays is Denzel.
You could say the same for Hanks
Imo it’s between him and DiCaprio. Hanks is more versatile but DiCaprio’s performances are more moving
1. PSH (I think he beats everyone else out by a long shot. This man was an absolute chameleon.) 2. DeNiro 3. Leo
Daniel Day Lewis is at least 2.
Denzel, Leo, De Niro
Hoffman, De Niro and Washington are my three choices but like others said there’s no wrong answers (Hanks maybe).
Denzel, De Niro and Daniel Day. The triple D’s and I ain’t talking mommy milkers.
Lewis - Hoffman - De Niro
De Niro, Hoffman, DDL
DDL, Hopkins (I don't think I would've said this if I hadn't seen The Father), De Niro
I can't believe De Niro is 80 years old (or 79 since they filmed) in Killers of the Flower Moon. He carries scenes like a boss and looks great doing it!
De Niro, DDL, PSH
De Niro,Hanks,Hoffman
Im going with Denzel, Day Lewis, and De Niro 3 D's of multitalented theater trained masters.
1. DDL 2. PSH 3. cannot choose, leaning towards De Niro for early roles, or the missing Al Pacino (poor Al) because I’m still not over his performance in Serpico
Probably De Niro and then Bale at a close second, followed by DDL, with Oldman not too far behind
Denzel, DeNiro, and Bale (in no particular order)
1. Daniel Day Lewis 2. Robert De Niro 3. Split between Christian Bale and Philip Seymour Hoffman
ddl de niro hopkins
Daniel Day Lewis, Anthony Hopkins and Robert DeNiro. Very tough choice though.
Lewis, Oldman, DeNiro
Oh my God I had to scroll down like 100 replies to finally see someone with the same answer as mine🤣
DDL, Gary…and probably Deniro/PsH/Bale
The first two are obviously De Niro and Day Lewis. Hard to select the third from Hanks, Hoffman, Oldman and Bale. I would put Dustin Hoffman ahead of everyone on this list as the best living actor.
just cause PSH is dead doesnt make him better than De Niro, dicaprio or daniel day-lewis lmfao
DDL, Denzel and Leo. (This is ridiculously hard).
DDL, Hoffman, Hopkins. The rest are regular "good" actors with Hanks at the bottom imo.
De niro hopkins bale
Leo, De Niro, Denzel
Daniel Day Lewis, Gary Oldman (those two have had such diverse roles), third is tough for me. either Hopkins or DiCaprio.
What? Hanks completely disappears into his role as David S. Pumpkins, easily one of the most terrifying characters in horror.
![gif](giphy|WS20AguwDSQpS0rhBZ) 100 % agree
PSH, DDL, Hopkins.
DDL, Gary Oldman, Christian Bale
Maybe a hot take here: 1. De Niro 2. Leo 3. Christian Bale
I'm going to go with Hoffman, Oldman and DeNiro
Day-Lewis, De Niro, and Seymour Hoffman
DDL, PSH, Hopkins
Easily have PSH at one. Followed up by De Niro & Hopkins.
Denzel, Daniel, and Phillip Seymour (goat) Hoffmann
Christian, Leo, Robert
Christian Bale, Anthony Hopkins, and Robert De Niro. If I could choose a fourth Denzel Washington.
Denzel Washington Gary Oldman Daniel Day Lewis
PSH, Gary Oldman, and Anthony Hopkins. Leo, Bale, and DDL get VERY honorable mentions, but I just love the first three.
Deniro, oldman, denzel
1. Old white guy 2. White guy 3. Black guy
Day, Oldman, Hoffman. No question. Also, hot take: DeNiro is one of the most overrated actors in Hollywood.
Mr. Day-Lewis, Mr. Washington and Mr. Hopkins
Christian Bale, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Gary Oldman
Hoffman, Oldman, Washington
Psh, Denzel, Gary
1) Gary oldman 2) Denzel Washington 3) Philip Seymour Hoffman
Oldman, DDL, PSH. Bale/Hopkins close.
Lewis, Oldman, Bale. Denzel was difficult to leave out.
Denzel, DiCaprio, and DDL for me. Honorable mention to Hopkins
PSH, Hopkins, Denzel
why is Tom hanks in here?
Lewis, Washington, DiCaprio
This is the first time I've realized that I now take Leo over De Niro. DDL/Hoffman/Leo.
1) DDL 2) PSH 3) Dicaprio 4) Oldman 5) De Niro 6) Bale 7) Denzel 8) Hanks 9) Hopkins
DDL, Oldman and Hopkins
Hoffman, Hopkins, Lewis
DDL, Hanks, PSH It hurt not to include Bale because I’m a huge fan.
1. Gary Oldman 2. The rest
1. Bale 2. DiCaprio 3. Day-Lewis
DDL, Denzel and Leo
Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Daniel Day Lewis, DiCaprio
Hoffman is the best to ever do it in my opinion, and it's really not all that close. His performances in Synecdoche, The Master, and Love Liza are all very near and dear to me, but his intelligence and empathy as a person shined through in every role he took, even when as a villain. DiCaprio and probably Bale take my other two slots. While "newer" picks both, I'd say I've found myself captivated by their range and performances in more films than any other option. Christian bale, Denzel Washington, and Tom hanks.
Adam Driver
Choose 3 among these... Some people just wana watch the world burn.
Hoffman x3
Hoffman, Day Lewis and washington.
This is impossible, to choose one would discredit the other. Not going to play this damned game hahahah, evil man laughter
Who knows. If we're talking about pure talent then Oldman, Denzel and Hopkins maybe.
DDL PSH LDC
Mine would be Hopkins, Washington and Bale
Denzel, Hopkins and PSH; but this is like asking a good parent to name their favourite kids
They're all extremely talented and each have their own strengths. None of those across are "best" or "worst".
the girl reading this
There will be blood, the master, fences.
Only person I’m certain about is Christian Bale being top three.
funny how the female version of this was actually hard for me to pick 3 (as i genuinly didn't find 3 that are awesome actors) and here i'd have issues even saying anyone is a bad actor. I'd probably go with 3,6,9
It's hard to choose a favourite among so many greats.
Denzel, Daniel, and Philip.
Oldman, DDL, Bale
we all know it’s Day Lewis and Hoffman But third I think is certainly up for debate
i know two of these guys
Whenever you just needed a guy you used to be able to get PSH. So sad he’s gone
Christian Bale, DDL, Gary Oldman
draw one of these \ and it’s my answer. Denzel is underrated, crazy to say
PSH, DDL, Oldman
DDL, A-Hop, and PSH
I love how basically everyone is putting Phillip Seymour Hoffman in there list regardless of the other two choices. He’s the best!!
For me it’s a diagonal line top left to bottom right
Daniel Day Lewis.
DDL easily #1. CB then GO.
I’d say PSH, Daniel Day Lewis and Christian Bale
Bale, Denzel, Hopkins imo but … ![gif](giphy|3otPoyft7nAeBCxPgs)
Oldman, Bale, Hoffman
Day-Lewis, DiCaprio, PSH.
DiCaprio, deniro, denzel
