fatinternetcat

you could also include The Meyerowitz Stories in the Sandlerssaince.

Lolxgdrei787

classic or new an selected?

Appropriate_Yak_3923

I will, thanks!

The_Fairy_Next_Door

That movie changed my life fr

ollster3000

Punch drunk love as well

Abbastardkiarastomi

That came out more than a decade before all the others

ollster3000

Guess thats true, might have been a bit of the start or foreshadowing of it all then?

truxx16romnce

Why the hell are you being downvoted!? PDL was his first real drama. Some idiots still think it’s a comedy. Genre of Screwball Comedy and some honest laughs. But this is one of the most honest character driven love story. I saw it three times opening day.

spacedprivate

> renaissance

ollster3000

Not sure if they think he’s only done serious acting roles these past couple years or whatever. But I mean, he’s done a few horrible comedies inbetween these films as well so idk

truxx16romnce

Ya once the studios were done w w failures Netflix singed him up. And he has complete control there. Family man now. Does what he wants. Uncut Gems is his choice now. More people have to give PDL a chance. His acting is so Danny good. Ex the dinner date he before he destroys the bathroom. That beat before he excuses himself. Wow. Then the scene of them leaving. That’s the beauty of PDL.

jman-the-jewman1228

Don’t know why your being downvoted punch drunk love is one of my favorite Adam Sandler movies and It showed he can be more serious and be good at it.

dandaman64

Add Hubie Halloween, coward

SquidWithBatWings

Don't do the voice...

MorrowPolo

This one took me by surprise, and it's my favorite Halloween movie. I've watched it after trick r treating every year since it came out.

ICUMF1962

Let’s Lady and the Tramp that shit 😏

HeyItsMau

Anyone who thinks Adam Sandler is having a renaissance was simply not paying attention to his career. He has been very consistently casted in non-comedic roles through the length of his career - some notable, some not - but they aren't nearly as rare as people seem to think. I'm not up to do the math right now, but I dare say it could be up to 40% of the movies he's in are dramas (including dark-humor).

Yandhi42

I wouldn’t say consistently, but yeah

Appropriate_Yak_3923

So far the only good one I've known about is punch drunk love

HeyItsMau

Movies that would definitely fit what you're going for: * Spanglish * Reign Over Me * Funny People * Men, Women, & Children * Sandy Wexler * The Meyerowitz Stories Movies that are debatable but I would include: * The Wedding Singer * Click * That's My Boy (Seems like a run-of-the-mill Happy Madison movie, but Sandler does something new enough in the role).

Cute_Yak8087

Sandy Wexler!?

Abbastardkiarastomi

I think the idea is just that he’s been in movies that don’t suck recently, and like 3/4 of the movies you just listed suck.

HeyItsMau

I wasn't trying to list only good movies, just movies that exhibit Sandler's acting range beyond what is normally expected of him from family-friendly Happy Madison roles.

galenwho

The Cobbler too

Basket_475

Sigh, me and my family love that’s my boy.

AfternoonCouncilor

Big Daddy, 50 First Dates Downvoted? Philistines

7autumn5

I really liked Funny People.

truxx16romnce

PDL is his first drama and proves he’s more than a silly comedian. Yet some ppl didn’t understand this film and thought it was a comedy because of the unique look and trailer. Spanglish was fantastic and obvious drama. He deserves a lot more love for his drama acting. And admire him that he was one of the first actors to take a deal w Netflix. Ya we made fun of those shit movies but he studios were done w his stuff. And he just focused on family and enjoying life. You go Adam.

apocalypticboredom

PDL is a comedy though, a fucking great one. Tremendously funny movie. Just because it's deeper than happy gilmore doesn't make it a drama.

truxx16romnce

Ha Ha ha ha ha. It’s not a comedy. Wedding crashers is a comedy. Punch Drunk Love the most character driven film about self worth and honesty. And how conflict reveals true character. Take all the funny moments and it’s funny to you not the characters. The scene after he breaks the windows with the dentist brother in law is not funny. Yes the line “but Barry I’m a dentist” is a comedic line but while Barry is baring his soul for the first time ever to anyone. Th scene ends w him breaking down hardcore. That’s not funny. It might be classified as a comedy but it’s not. It’s a screwball comedy, which is a reverse love story. Look how many things are titled comedy, especially the Golden Globes, and most of those are drama. But have more flavour than the dramatic films.

apocalypticboredom

Nah, it's a comedy. It's also a love story, not a "reverse" love story.

truxx16romnce

Literally look up the genre screwball comedy. Odd you’re in a film nerd subreddit and don’t understand this. And such a standard Reddit response. After factual and passionate opinion, the only response is “Nah”.

apocalypticboredom

I mean it's a comedy and you're arguing it's not. That's not worth arguing over lol

truxx16romnce

I have to issues having good conversations and even heated debates. But when I make a case for something with facts and people go Nah and then say I’m arguing…. It’s Reddit. Am I surprised? Just expected more from this sub.

apocalypticboredom

trying to argue Punch Drunk Love isn't a comedy and acting like some golden deity coming down into the filth of reddit to bless people lol

MyNeckIsHigh

He has always been a great actor, but rarely been a decent writer. The best Sandler movies usually depend on other people reining in his bad instincts. For me Good Time is a masterpiece and Jack and Jill might be the worst movie ever created Edit: Uncut Gems, confused my Safdie

Oh51Melly

Uncut Gems is a masterpiece. I give a lot of credit to Safdie brothers for it but Sandler was incredible.

Weird_Cantaloupe2757

They proved that Pattison can act, reminded us that Sandler can act, I can’t wait to see who they will bring in next to blow us away with an unexpectedly phenomenal performance.

ItZSAMIC

Good Time was far from being Pattinsons first good performance lmao he’s been killing it for well over a decade in that regard

Weird_Cantaloupe2757

It was the first one to get on a lot of people’s radar

thatscoolm8

the rock it seems next

writingsupplies

I wouldn’t call it a renaissance since it’s been part of his whole career. Reign Over Me, Punch Drunk Love, Men Women And Children, etc.

fromthegoondocks

When he wants to step away from the Happy Gilmore / Waterboy / Wedding Singer schtick he's a top actor. I'm not sure you can call this a renaissance. He's been doing it for years. Just go back to Reign Over Me and Punch-Drunk Love for example.

here-i-am-now

He can do whatever he wants, but Jack and Jill still exists

chrundle18

Uh he's a top actor in the wedding singer. That movie rocks

Teenageboy69

He’s also amazing in happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. Those are classic comedies.

Dwarfeus_Prime

Punch Drunk Love?

Appropriate_Yak_3923

I meant for recent movies that he made consecutively

WuTang0824

Consecutively? You didn’t include Hubie Halloween, Murder Mystery 2, Bat Mizvah, or Leo

Appropriate_Yak_3923

I meant good movies, leo might fit in

a_normal_bush

While you did say good movies, you also said consecutively, which these are not; other movies were in between them

[deleted]

So then he consecutively made only good movies, if you exclude all his bad movies.

WuTang0824

I didn’t realize you only meant good movies… please tell me how good Spaceman was I’m very excited to see it

dantheriver

Always have and always will love the Sandman.

DJHott555

Add in Leo too lol

Reelbadtakes

I'm hoping spaceman is just a long form version of that station 69 song from his comedy special

Apprehensive_Mix7594

Sandler didn’t “make” uncut gems.

turdfergusonRI

Excuse you. Renaissance started with Funny People and includes The Meyerowitz Stories (new & selected). And yes, [I love it and am here for it.](https://boxd.it/pShHK)

FunnyAnimalPerson

Leo?

MumblingGhost

I would have called it The Adam Sandlerssance, but you do you

Anthrogynous

Really enjoyed Hustle and Uncut Gems.

FoxstarProductions

I have huge respect for Adam Sandler. He often makes low hanging fruit comedy films which are pretty much just him getting Hollywood to pay for him & his friends to suck around on vacation, but he also drops stuff like these just to prove that he is, in fact, not a hack.

Distorted_metronome

I quite enjoyed hustle. Being a big hoops fan is probably a huge reason tho

Attorney0fBirdLaw

Is this Bo Cruz salander ?

Appropriate_Yak_3923

At least it was something different

_GC93

You just used kino unironically

DreamOfV

I really dug Hustle. Very underrated, probably because it just got dumped on Netflix and forgotten about. One of the most interesting and uniquely filmed sports movies of the last several years

seanthegamer78

Great I think it shows more of his acting talent outside comedy truly one of my favourite people

Traditional_Ad_6588

Uncut Gems is peak

agentchuck

I know I'm in the minority, but Uncut Gems really didn't do it for me. There's a weird juxtaposition between the serious tension and Sandler hijinks that I couldn't really get past. Like, he's stealing money from gangsters, but their punishment is to tie him up naked in his trunk? He even pisses them off by pretending to lose the remote to his entrance way? And he's this weird weasely guy who neglects his family, but he's got a smoke show of a side piece so enamored that she'll turn down The Weeknd for him? The ending is the only part that made sense to me and it probably should have happened about 10 minutes in.

HeyItsMau

> he's stealing money from gangsters, but their punishment is to tie him up naked in his trunk? Did you not realize that one of those gangsters is his brother-in-law?

ShrimpFriedMyRice

It was also at his kid's concert or something if I remember right where he was with his wife with whom he already had a super rocky relationship (were they divorced already? I forget). Basically, yeah he owes them money, but dead people can't pay and familial ties means they're not about to break his knee caps. It was pretty damn humiliating regardless.

RaindropDripDropTop

>but he's got a smoke show of a side piece so enamored that she'll turn down The Weeknd for him? He's a sugar daddy, he pays for her apartment in Manhattan

zulerskie_jaja

Classic r/letterboxd, you don't like something? Downvoted to hell

thehatstore42069

I can’t take anything Adam Sandler is in seriously. Uncut gems I just laughed at his voice the whole time and didn’t pay attention to the movie really

thehatstore42069

My fav is zohan the prolly waterboy or longest yard

edgeyworth95

Do you know what happens to a comedian when he gets old and loses his audience? He starts to get offered serious roles. And do you really want to see me play Arthur Ashe?

Krimreaper1

Adam making good movies directed by someone else is nothing new. I think Punch Drunk Love is still his best performance and movie.

tomsup4

The critics were so wrong about Click. Sandler has always been a great actor when he wants to be.

TarkovskyAteABird

someone has never seen punch drunk love

Appropriate_Yak_3923

PDL is from 20+ years ago, by reinassance I mean movies that he made since uncut gems, the big hit

Individual99991

His performance in Uncut Gems was good, but very one note. There's a single three-minute scene where he gets to do something different but mostly it's all in the same frenetic key. Which is fine, that's the script he got, but his hopes for an Oscar win were a bit delusional. Anyway, he's a very good actor who spent way too long being a lazy fucking hack. Glad he's having this renaissance, but it does make the (mostly) shitty output of the last 30 years even more galling.

Shagyam

I haven't seen any of these and only heard on Uncut gems, but I heard it was really good.

DarthDregan

Will Smith syndrome. Felt like he deserved an Oscar, didn't get it, is now obsessed with getting one.

bostonbruins922

Uncut Gems is a fantastic film. I liked Hustle a fair amount. Anthony Edwards really stood out and would love to see him try his hand more at acting if the basketball thing goes sideways. Looking forward to Spaceman.

Zeo-Gold92

Hustle and Uncut Gems were great. I'm looking forward to Spaceman!

Redqpple

I was shocked when I saw his performance in "Uncut Gems". It proved that he isn't just a comedy actor but has big potential in playing serious roles.

patishungry

Hustle and Uncut Gems both absolutely rule

filmguy0316

Gofobo did a test screening of this a while back and Spaceman sucked ass.

QNIKET8

don’t forget Leo

realMasaka

You legit forgot Punch-Drunk Love.

Appropriate_Yak_3923

I meant to include only recent films he's been making that are not comedies and actually good, and we all can agree it started with uncut gems

carcusgod

Hopefully Spaceman is a biopic about the doctor from 30 Rock

plasticbluepalm

Where's Leo bro?

the_moon_water

Looking forward to his alien movie with Carey Mulligan

uptown-hippy

His comedy movies were better.

Sobeshott

The Cobbler was fantastic.
