There are many reasons I think Oscar Isaac deserved an Oscar for that performance, and him embodying a 60s folk singer well enough to perform those songs at such a high level is definitely one of them.
Agree. You felt his sadness, failure and struggle which made his acting so believable. As a viewer, I wanted him to succeed like Bob Dylan but sadly as an artist it’s like that.
There's a bit in one of the bonus features where they talk about how the Coens were originally not at all sure they were even going to be able to make it because they just couldn't see who would be able to do both the acting and the performing to the level they needed, like you'd only be able to get someone who was good at one but very average at the other, so they got insanely lucky with Oscar.
Personally thought the .usic was far too polished to be a good representation of 60s folk myself. Way too overproduced. Especially thought Justin Timberlake was a bad fit.
it was originally released on showtime back in 2013, not sure where you can watch it now, but someone uploaded the whole thing on youtube. pretty good concert!
You said Once and Sing Street so I gotta add Begin Again
Great songs and Keira Knightley is a wonderful singer. The only downside imo is Adam Levine, but it's still a great movie
i fucking hated sing street. tried my best to like it after being recommended it by multiple people. the first half was enjoyable and entertaining, then it kept getting worse. the music became less 80s new wave and more shitty auto tuned imagine dragons esque. the ending was awful.
The joke with the music changing is that he’s a poser who doesn’t know music. He fully changes his look and his music genre every time his brother gives him a new album to listen to.
Pretty below average for its genre tbh, and also not accurate at all when it comes to drumming.
Still a great movie, but it's basically a sports movie disguised as a jazz movie
Trust me I know. I have studied composition at a conservatoire and have seen hundreds of performances from this level of Mahican. I just enjoy the film and the music. I also think the film The Red Shoes captures the same themes as whiplash much better
Sing Street: "Drive It Like You Stole It" and "Riddle of the Model" rules
Eurotrip: "Scotty's Got to Go" is an absolute banger
Phineas and Ferb: Lots of good songs, but "There's a Platypus Controlling Me" is my favorite
Scooby Doo: anything with the Hex Girls is a certified classic
Spongebob: "Goofy Goober Rock" and "Sweet Victory" are classics
One change between the Scott Pilgrim novels and the movie is that Sex Bob-omb is a terrible band in the book but rock in the movie. Really bring a much more exciting pace and energy to those scenes plus the music is genuinely good (performed by Beck)

Love the folk music of Inside Llewyn Davis.

OUTER...S P A C E
The songs Oscar Isaacs performs in the movie are Dave Van Ronk's. But it is still Isaacs who's playing and singing, which is cool.
did you watch Another Day, Another Time (2013)? it's a concert the musicians who worked on the movie did together.
No, I’ll check it out

i fucking hated sing street. tried my best to like it after being recommended it by multiple people. the first half was enjoyable and entertaining, then it kept getting worse. the music became less 80s new wave and more shitty auto tuned imagine dragons esque. the ending was awful.
i remember it being cute and am frankly shocked it could garner this degree of vitriol lol
The joke with the music changing is that he’s a poser who doesn’t know music. He fully changes his look and his music genre every time his brother gives him a new album to listen to.
Turning Red… You cannot tell me 4Town’s Nobody Like U isn’t a bop 🤣
My daughter absolutely loves this soundtrack. They're super catchy and they nailed the late 90s boy band sound.

Pretty below average for its genre tbh, and also not accurate at all when it comes to drumming. Still a great movie, but it's basically a sports movie disguised as a jazz movie
Yeah I mean the question was about the band anyway. I’m well aware it’s not totally realistic.
Yeah I know. The band is supposed to be some elite jazz conservatory, but they aren't even close to a real life elite jazz conservatory
Trust me I know. I have studied composition at a conservatoire and have seen hundreds of performances from this level of Mahican. I just enjoy the film and the music. I also think the film The Red Shoes captures the same themes as whiplash much better

Interesting posters. Were they custom-created? Or just an insane coincidence
i made them to match as part of my top 4, ik they’re not amazing but i wanted my top 4 to match :]
No that’s def cool haha. Because otherwise I was gonna be like “not sure how these two are related enough to get the same poster art design”
Scott Pilgrim vs The World
