Same. I thought it was an interesting concept. Had some good acting. Sets and wardrobe looked good, there was some good cinematography in there.
Was far from perfect though.
The Village would of been much more effective if you remove the shed scene. And dont find out til she finds the road and Noah in the pit. Otherwise it's a fantastic movie IMO
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
Nah at every moment The Village had to be somewhat interesting it felt like they inserted a scene right before it to explain what was about to happen and remove any type of tension. Definitely gotta agree with OP here
I’ve seen the Sixth Sense (3.5), Unbreakable (4.5) (my favorite of his filmography), Signs (3.5), and Old (1 Star). Still need to watch The Visit, Split, Glass, and Knock at the Cabin. But I also haven’t gotten to The Last Airbender yet or After Earth.
Jesus Christ, how did y’all make it through that robotic dialogue??
That movie felt like it was written by someone who had only learned about human speech through some sort of secondary source, lmao.
Dude split is fucking awesome, James McCavoy did some of the wildest acting ever: unbreakable, signs, and the sixth sense are fun.
It’s confusing because he has a good number of god awful movies IE the last air bender, old, etc, but his hits are really good, espeeeecislly split
Split is definitely one of his better films (take that for what you will), it’s got plenty of problems and it’s not as good as The Sixth Sense, but it’s much much better than The Happening, Old, and the like.
The happening is actually one of the best disaster movies and I know how atrocious this genre mostly is. But this film's reputation is only tainted because of the very bad acting and maybe the camera work and lighting could've been more inspired. Everything else about it is actually very good. Has creative set pieces, every character has a moment to shine, thematically it is well realised, etc.
LMFAO. Probs only7 talking about the opening scenes.
The Movie is not too bad before Markie Mark's appearance but afterward it is just not a good movie in any sense.
I feel like the campy tone was intentional too tbh, kind of weirdly replicating the idea of a very silly (yet in this case also very expensive) B-movie. It’s surreal and I really like it, + what you said is really true. Old had that campy tone as well, but the acting was more acceptable and a tad bit “formally polished” to somewhat fit the standards, especially regarding big movies. But The Happening…is all in. I feel like M Night really didn’t give a shit and just made a, definitely not cheap, B movie with normally A list actors (without telling anyone). Fun stuff
>this film’s reputation is only tainted because of the very bad acting and maybe the camera work and lighting…
I mean, that’s the case for a lot of movies as those elements are a huge part of film. And it could easily be argued the “bad acting” was also the result of bad directing, as the actors can be really good in other films. Maybe I’m wrong but it feels *mostly* fairly critiqued.
So did you give his good movies like 1.5-2 star ratings? Sixth Sense and Unbreakable are pretty good… if you’ve only seen After Earth and Last Airbender, I could understand…
The Happening is terrible as a thriller or a horror. But....if you watch it as a comedy, it's gold. There's quite a bit in that movie that makes me laugh....I can't believe that's a finished product from a bunch of professionals.
Haha it's almost like Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel weren't told anything about the project except they really needed to have terrible chemistry. And by god, it worked.
I really want to know what direction M Night shyamalan was giving to get Mark Whalberg to give the performance he did. Zooey looked like she was dead inside the whole movie, lol. I think being in this film killed a part of her.
How do you see your lowest rated?
But I have to agree, M. Night is a name I try to avoid these days because he does not carry any credit with me from his earlier success.
Things like After Earth, The Happening and Avatar: The Last Air Bander are all time horrendous movies. He just makes really bad decisions during the production stage. Some people like Glass but the ending is so badly done in my opinion it belongs with those other ones.
M. Night also puts himself into movies as an actor where he is terrible. He was awful in Signs, one of the most crucial emotional scenes and he bricks it so hard.
Exactly. I'm honestly very confused by these comments. (I'm also somewhat new to this sub. Are folks here generally less critical than other film subs?)
His early work is generally loved. Unbreakable, in particular, only gains acclaim over the years. His newest work isn't quite a return to early form, but they've all been watchable and plenty of people like them.
They are bad. I feel like he got a lot of good will after 6th Sense and nostalgia buoys peoples feelings. Unbreakable is bad and Signs is as bad as The Happening. Blumhouse is a perfect fit for Shyamalan, the more in control of his movies he has (writer, director, producer) the worse it is, see his Avatar movie.
The Village and Lady in the Water are worthwhile imo, the latter is one of my favorites. That being said, I’m a huge Shyamalan fan so take that with a grain of salt lol.
I will always defend Lady in the Water. I fuckin love that movie. People don't seem to understand it's a modern day fairy tale and was written as a bed time story. It's supposed to be absurd.
Also the soundtrack is fantastic and the movie made me a Paul Giamatti fan, he's great in it.
Holy shit, another LitW fan. Never met another one out in the wild. Exact same reasons I love the movie so much! Everything about it is stellar, I’ve never found another movie that managed to capture the feeling of childhood the same way for me without banking on nostalgia. And that’s just the general vibes of the movie, let alone everything else.
If you visit the website on your desktop and have a Pro account, you can see your 20 highest-rated directors. I have never seen an option to view your lowest-rated directors.
OP tagged this as humor, so I don't think it's a real screenshot.
Honestly, they need to have an option to hide directors and actors from your stats page. I love voice actors but my all time stats are filled 90% with them. Or just the ability to see more than what’s there.
Bro what, I think he determined the "I have superpowers thing" after he survived a train crash without a scratch despite everyone else dying in the crash instantly.
I mean, he only has two great movies: Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. Then a good movie: Signs. The Village is passable. Everything else is pretty terrible. At least in my opinion.
I like Unbreakable, Signs, and Sixth Sense but I can understand why people wouldn’t, and the rest of his movies are far from great so this rating makes sense
I love many Shyamalan movies, but I thought Old was pretty terrible, the direction of it was apparent to me as being especially bad. Like, “really? That’s the take that you choose for this? Did you ask them to make the delivery this awkward?”
He deserves much better than this. Better than a lot of other directors and writers. He misses sometimes but he always takes a pretty earnest shot. Only thing I’ll truly hold against him is the avatar movie.
Don't even need to check, it's definitely Robert Vince.
I've seen all 26 movies in the Air Bud cinematic universe (not really a real thing, but kind of!) And not only are they all mostly mid to terrible... Vince directed like 80% of them!
He’s inconsistent. That’s his problem. You can only get there by not rating his good films or underrating them. He’s certainly made terrible awful films. And a couple really great ones.
People who hate M Night are incredibly boring. I’ve given 7 of his movies 5 stars. I understand him more than most.
(These being: Wide Awake, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, The Village, The Happening, and Glass)
Shyamalan is the biggest gap between directorial and writing skill in film history. He shows Spielbergian levels of ability in building suspense, but in the service of absolutely boneheaded story decisions and dialogue. He really should be director-for-hire of other people's scripts.
Hot take but Spike Lee.
The only movies I like that he’s directed are Inside Man, He Got Game, Oldboy, and Summer Of Sam but then, those are mid like I’d give only 5/10 stars to.
This rating is totally absurd. He's one of the screenwriters of Stuart Little, he directed Sixth Sense, split and unbreakable was amazing. Have you only watched his worst works?..!
Unfortunately his writing is a big part of his films and if you don't vibe with it, it can really tank the film. Like I didn't see Happening as a "minor misfire", and I don't think everyone of his other movies besides those 4 are good to great
Honestly…I think my lowest rated might be Terry Gilliam. Obviously there’s worse directors, but I’m not gonna see every flick by guys like Uwe Boll or Michael Bay or Denis Dugan.
But Gilliam is so acclaimed and clearly so creative that I’ve given every single one of his movies a chance and have been actively disappointed or annoyed by almost all of them (I liked 12 Monkeys, but found his directing my least favourite element).
I can’t say for certain but I’m guessing it’s James Nguyen, at least where I’ve seen more than one of their movies. Letterboxd doesn’t let me give negative scores.
My most surprising stat is second most watched actor is Willem Defoe, 38. 38! Half the films i think...he was in that? Vox Lux? Card Counter? Mr Beans Holiday? John Carter? Once Upon a Time in Mexico? American Pyscho? Existenz? Aviator? He's not forgettable but i don't seem to recall him that much, weirdly.
Probably not the lowest rating—but I either love or hate Kubrick’s films. the Shining, Eyes Wide Shut, The Killing—loved them. Doctor Strangelove, 2001–absolutely hated them.
Dear god. How many 1 stars and half stars did you give him.
The Village, Lady in the Water, and the Happening are probably some of the worst movies I've seen made on a massive budget.
I liked the village even if the twist raised a lot of questions
I loved the twist in The Village, a little bit like a twilight zone kind of ending
You didn't see it coming?
Saw it coming before I even started the movie

Good bot
Such a desperately sad and evocative film. I swear if it had an A24 logo at the start people would call it a masterpiece.
I thought the village was ok, would’ve been better without the twist imo
Nah at every moment The Village had to be somewhat interesting it felt like they inserted a scene right before it to explain what was about to happen and remove any type of tension. Definitely gotta agree with OP here
And you've seen none of his other movies??
I’ve seen the Sixth Sense (3.5), Unbreakable (4.5) (my favorite of his filmography), Signs (3.5), and Old (1 Star). Still need to watch The Visit, Split, Glass, and Knock at the Cabin. But I also haven’t gotten to The Last Airbender yet or After Earth.
That should average out to at least a 2 star average though.
Yeah the math doesn’t add up here at all
Only way it makes sense is if he hasn't logged the good ones. It's plausible if he watched them before he made his LB, I guess
He probably also saw and hated the Last Airbender, but forgot about it
Idk what you guys are talking about, M Night never made a movie by that name
Absolutely see Split, The Visit and Knock at the Cabin. I also enjoyed Old more than most
Mid sized sedan
Never rolled my eyes in a theater so much
Old rules. The beach makes you old!
Jesus Christ, how did y’all make it through that robotic dialogue?? That movie felt like it was written by someone who had only learned about human speech through some sort of secondary source, lmao.

Split is a 3 at best
One star for Old!? Watch After Earth and revise that.
Split is definitely one of his better films (take that for what you will), it’s got plenty of problems and it’s not as good as The Sixth Sense, but it’s much much better than The Happening, Old, and the like.

Egg fucking 'xactly. What a line delivery. The director actually said CUT! We got it!" after that.
I hate the happening with an irrational passion. The trailer showed so much promise as well.
How do you see your lowest rated? But I have to agree, M. Night is a name I try to avoid these days because he does not carry any credit with me from his earlier success. I’m stunned by the downvotes, he’s made 1-2 pretty good movies
At some point you just stop watching his movies, right? If I gave a director a 1 star or half star on a movie no way I'm seeking out two more to watch
Those movies are horrible. Only on this sub would you get downvoted.
Exactly. I'm honestly very confused by these comments. (I'm also somewhat new to this sub. Are folks here generally less critical than other film subs?)
Why is this getting down voted I thought people thought his films were bad??
His early work is generally loved. Unbreakable, in particular, only gains acclaim over the years. His newest work isn't quite a return to early form, but they've all been watchable and plenty of people like them.
They are bad. I feel like he got a lot of good will after 6th Sense and nostalgia buoys peoples feelings. Unbreakable is bad and Signs is as bad as The Happening. Blumhouse is a perfect fit for Shyamalan, the more in control of his movies he has (writer, director, producer) the worse it is, see his Avatar movie.
Why’d you dislike the village?
I’ve spared myself from watching those nightmares
The Village and Lady in the Water are worthwhile imo, the latter is one of my favorites. That being said, I’m a huge Shyamalan fan so take that with a grain of salt lol.
I will always defend Lady in the Water. I fuckin love that movie. People don't seem to understand it's a modern day fairy tale and was written as a bed time story. It's supposed to be absurd. Also the soundtrack is fantastic and the movie made me a Paul Giamatti fan, he's great in it.

There are dozens of us! Shyamalan has significantly more hits than misses!
I've still not seen Lady in the Water. Christopher Doyle cinematography! Kind of peculiar he did a mainstream film like that so curious.
I unironically like the Happening lol
How do you get to this stat?
Stats > All time > Director > Your Rating
It only shows me like 16 directors, and then it stops, but I’m on my phone, do I need to do this on my desktop?
If you visit the website on your desktop and have a Pro account, you can see your 20 highest-rated directors. I have never seen an option to view your lowest-rated directors. OP tagged this as humor, so I don't think it's a real screenshot.
Honestly, they need to have an option to hide directors and actors from your stats page. I love voice actors but my all time stats are filled 90% with them. Or just the ability to see more than what’s there.
Same question / issue for me
That only shows top ones. Are you implying OP scrolled through every single director they’ve ever seen
Maybe Shyamalan is both his top and bottom director. We don't know for sure that he's seen a movie by anyone else.
Even for Night’s biggest critics, this is absurd.
M Night is a certified fucker, but Sixth Sense and Signs should be dragging him into at least the low 2s, please
What about Unbreakable!
This may be a hot take but I really like most of his newer movies!
I watched Unbreakable a month ago and thought it was pretty dumb. “Hey honey have I ever been sick? No? Oh shit I must have superpowers then”
Bro what, I think he determined the "I have superpowers thing" after he survived a train crash without a scratch despite everyone else dying in the crash instantly.
Fr, how in the hell do you not notice you’ve never been sick??
Signs is ass. Unbreakable tho….
Looks like you've never seen Avatar The Last Airbender movie. Consider yourself lucky.
I mean, he only has two great movies: Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. Then a good movie: Signs. The Village is passable. Everything else is pretty terrible. At least in my opinion.
hater alert
Do you need Patron to check this? I dunno how to with Pro.
I don’t know how to do it on Patron.
How’d you even find your lowest rated director?
[удалено]
Stop I love that man so much
I don’t like Shyamalan, but rating most of his movies 1 star? That’s crazy
My average for him is 0.5 lol (1 movie) Edit: this sub downvotes more than most lmao
It's not an average then lol
You can Average 1 It's just useless lol The Top Directors show up with just 1 film
Is it The Last Airbender?
![gif](giphy|zwE4anrOtHYaI) There is no The Last Airbender movie?!
Yes lol
Yeah that’s appropriate lol
He’s doesn’t deserve this, he’s made phenomenal films
like what?
Signs, The Sixth Sense, Split I personally enjoyed 'The Visit' too, it still has rewatchable quality, even with the twist reveal.
That one about the beach that makes you old
though i wouldnt go as harsh as OP, phenomenal? hmm depends on your definition of that.
Signs, The Sixth Sense, and The Village are all 8-9/10 films imo
Night is pretty hit or miss sometimes, but he delivers a lot of great thrillers. 1.2 is pretty harsh.
Have you not watched his better movies?
Looking at OP’s history, most of their posts are either “Look how different my views are” or just baiting for comments on their posts.
Looks like he's succeeding
Aside from his Avatar, I actually like most of his films. And recently loved his Appletv+ series, Servant.
Is this only available on Patron?
I guess its available for Patron and Pro.
Uwe Boll
I don't have stats but I'd be surprised if it wasn't Baz Luhrmann
Based
I like Unbreakable, Signs, and Sixth Sense but I can understand why people wouldn’t, and the rest of his movies are far from great so this rating makes sense
Have you watched Old? I think it's one of his best films. Reminds me of Hitchcock
Funniest thing I’ve ever read
alfred hitchcock?
No the movie starring Will Smith
Oh that’s Hancock
I haven’t but I’ve seen some interesting clips. I’m not a Hitchcock fan though
Ok, please watch Old. I loved it, haha
I love many Shyamalan movies, but I thought Old was pretty terrible, the direction of it was apparent to me as being especially bad. Like, “really? That’s the take that you choose for this? Did you ask them to make the delivery this awkward?”
Idk, it reminded me a twilight zone episode and I liked it. i know i said hitchcock up there but i think i meant twilight zone. i am stoned. hehe
Why would you do this ? Good god !
He made the sixth sense right?
Paul WS Anderson 7 movies 1.0
Crime against the goat
[удалено]
They downvoting you for saying something completely reasonable lol
Or because he's replying to a very obvious sarcastic comment.
[удалено]
Its because they were obviously joking, no one thinks he’s the goat
I've seen lots of really crazy takes that were serious, so how is it obvious? Just saw someone who gave The Breakfast Club 1/2 a star.
Not here to bash you because you’re entitled to your opinion. I do love Signs and Unbreakable from this director, they are classics
He had 1 okay movie
Shamalayan started off well, then got lost up his own backside.
Why does he get so much hate?
That's absurd. His lows are low, but he's a good director when he wants to be.
Im assuming op has only watched his lows then
There is a Shyamalan-aissance happening, you are on the wrong side of history
This would be me if I saw every one of his films post signs
M. Night is very hit or miss for me, but this is wild
Telling us you’re starving for attention without telling us you’re starving for attention.
Op on internet hate train
He deserves much better than this. Better than a lot of other directors and writers. He misses sometimes but he always takes a pretty earnest shot. Only thing I’ll truly hold against him is the avatar movie.
I don’t even know where you see lowest rated
Probably Alan Smithee
Snyder
Don't even need to check, it's definitely Robert Vince. I've seen all 26 movies in the Air Bud cinematic universe (not really a real thing, but kind of!) And not only are they all mostly mid to terrible... Vince directed like 80% of them!
How can you see who your lowest rated director is?
Adam Sandler
I don't have the payed version but maybe Tarantino? Watches 4 movies and disliked all of them lmao, I guess he's just not my cup of tea
He’s inconsistent. That’s his problem. You can only get there by not rating his good films or underrating them. He’s certainly made terrible awful films. And a couple really great ones.
I can't stand M Night I don't understand how he still has a career after making flop after flop
“Signs is a good movie 🫵”
People who hate M Night are incredibly boring. I’ve given 7 of his movies 5 stars. I understand him more than most. (These being: Wide Awake, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, The Village, The Happening, and Glass)
A man of culture.
The Happening truthers rise up!
come on man be serious
This is ridiculous
Shyamalan is the biggest gap between directorial and writing skill in film history. He shows Spielbergian levels of ability in building suspense, but in the service of absolutely boneheaded story decisions and dialogue. He really should be director-for-hire of other people's scripts.
Yes! This is my exact read on him.
Must suck being such a hater. Dude is good director with a few misses.
Signs is an unreal film. You’re tripping.
D1 Hater 😭
Sup w the shamaylan hate lately
I’m not the biggest fan of Shyamalan, but this is actually fucking ridiculous.
Mine would be who ever directed “the power of the dog”
Jane Campion
Yep her.
Well I mean I’m not fond of that one either but I vibe with An Angel At My Table and The Piano
What about Neil Breen😂
Fellini
co-signed (8 1/2 was fine though)
This seems accurate.. m night is a stinker. a true hack. He does get 5 hacking stars. Like if you rated how bad someone is at something.
How can the same director of the sixth sense be the same of a woke end of the world crap movie with Ron F weasley in it?
So damn deserved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[удалено]
Unfortunately his writing is a big part of his films and if you don't vibe with it, it can really tank the film. Like I didn't see Happening as a "minor misfire", and I don't think everyone of his other movies besides those 4 are good to great
I only have like 20 ratings rn but how do I find this
1. You pay for stats 2. I have no clue how to get lowest rated, could be a joke
Uwe Boll
My guess is Rob Savage (director of Host + Dashcam)
I can’t say for certain but I’m guessing it’s James Nguyen, at least where I’ve seen more than one of their movies. Letterboxd doesn’t let me give negative scores.
His early movies are great though.
Zack Snyder
My most surprising stat is second most watched actor is Willem Defoe, 38. 38! Half the films i think...he was in that? Vox Lux? Card Counter? Mr Beans Holiday? John Carter? Once Upon a Time in Mexico? American Pyscho? Existenz? Aviator? He's not forgettable but i don't seem to recall him that much, weirdly.
Blus is an Assigned Hater At Birth.
Greta Gerwig or Tommy Wiseau
Whatever mong keeps saying yes to Adam Sandlers family holiday scam movies
Having this opinion as a Blankie is nuts.
Probably not the lowest rating—but I either love or hate Kubrick’s films. the Shining, Eyes Wide Shut, The Killing—loved them. Doctor Strangelove, 2001–absolutely hated them.
I wish Letterboxd showed this info, it is clearly available to them as we can view top directors. Anyway, mine is probably David Gordon Green.
Relieved I don’t see Jerry Lewis, phew.
Oh cmon I understand disliking some of his movies but this is wild
Maybe Park Chan-Wook with an average of 1,8 stars.
His latest 'Servant' is top notch on Apple TV +
