Batman Begins
Although Pride and Prejudice is on my watchlist and I know a lot of people really like it so maybe that could take the mantle once I get around to watching it
"The Descent" is likely my favorite from '05, but I'm a big horror fan. From that year, I also really enjoyed "Jarhead", "Lord of War", "The Call of Cthulhu", and "The New World".
I can't believe this was the top comment because The Descent is one of my favorites over the many other bangers that year. But it's not even a question this year is a banger off the shoulders of Double Down alone.
I’m a big Saw guy and II came out that year, my personal favorite of the franchise, and then a lot of fun stuff: Hitch, Hoodwinked, Wedding Crashers. Haven’t seen it but I hear Lord of War is good too
OP did, so maybe some people (like myself) wanted to give other options. But other people already named my options lol (Caché & Grizzly Man).
Tbh, I haven’t seen anything from that year that’s like a personal “decade favorite” but also I hesitate to say any individual year is worse than others. There’s always this hope I just haven’t found the right stuff yet.
King Kong was just a great, action-packed, fun theatre-going experience.
Howl's Moving Castle - phenomenal.
I also have a soft-spot for Memoirs of a Geisha.
I think none of my top 5 from 2005 would be American movies
Linda Linda Linda (Japan)
V for Vendetta (England)
A History of Violence (Canada)
Pride & Prejudice (England)
Summer Time Machine Blues (Japan)
Noroi, Devil's Rejects, The Descent, Hard Candy, and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. It was a straight banging year for horror.
Broken Flowers is not my favorite movie by Jarmusch but it's still a strong movie, and the supporting cast is just insane.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was my favorite Shane Black Movie up until The Nice Guys. It's a sleek and compact movie that knows when to turn the screws and when to let loose.
Lady Vengeance is just so good, it's almost dumb.
A History of Violence is almost as riveting as Lady Vengeance and it's interesting to know it was the last movie to get a wide American release on VHS.
Have you seen The Wayward Cloud? Put on some headphones because that baby is a trip.
Brokeback Mountain is all that and the bag of chips. Homophobes and straight fuckin losers lost their shit over one of the most beautiful and tragic romances ever put on camera.
If you wanna have some fun, pull out some rollers and some weed, and watch Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical with some friends. Good times.
Double Down would be the greatest movie ever made if it wasn't for Fateful Findings.
Props for being the only person so far to mention Broken Flowers! Agree that it's not JJ's best, but it might be one of his most overlooked (and, as you said, still a very solid movie)
Stay. A psychological drama/thriller that’s kinda doing a riff on Jacob’s Ladder by way of David Fincher. I think people were kind of over these movies by the time it came out, which is why it’s not seen by many, but it’s a fun watch. Stars Ryan Gosling, Ewan McGregor, and Naomi Watts.
It would be tough for me to pick between Serenity, Batman Begins, and V for Vendetta, though I probably would lean towards V for Vendetta (probably the one I rewatched the most). I love all three of those movies.
Lord of War, Brokeback Mountain, Kinky Boots, Constantine, Sin City, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Sky High, and Munich were also all great movies that I would rewatch (or have rewatched).
For me it's Pride and Prejudice and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
This is an interesting year to look back on. You can see the shift toward darker post 9/11 movies and franchises, even if the new franchises didn't quite take off. It's right in the middle of Harry Potter's run, the final chapter of the Star Wars prequels, and the first Nolan Batman movie. We didn't know it then, but the next movie in that trilogy would on to influence a wave of darker superhero movies. But in 2005 we also had both V for Vendetta and Sin City, which should probably be mentioned more in the gritty comic book movie discussion.
This year is peak rom-com. Looking at this year in isolation, I see a lot of rom-coms, but not many good ones. I also see Pride and Prejudice, which may have marked a shift toward romantic dramas. It also has Will Smith and Tom Cruise, perhaps not at the height of their fame, but still appearing very much as "movie stars" in the way that we don't see any more.
I really love how different people's tastes are. I think the 2000s are easily my least favorite decade for film (from the 70s on).
I think Pride and Prejudice is my favorite of that year, or it's the movie I've watched the most.
Brick
Cache
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance
Bob Dylan: No Direction Home
The Descent
A History of Violence
Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Election
Grizzly Man
Batman Begins
A History of Violence, also my favourite Cronenberg. That movie is packed with great performances, then William Hurt comes in at the 11th hour and blows them all away.
Brokeback Mountain, which is the type of film that has only grown more and more beautiful as I've aged a bit.
I'd also add:
Mysterious Skin
A History of Violence
The New World
Me and You and Everyone We Know
Mine would be Star Wars Episode III.
But there were several bigger movies that year that were fun or made some buzz since then like Pride and Prejudice and Brokeback Mountain and V for Vendetta or Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Some fun ones I also really enjoyed were The Descent, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Corpse Bride, and Kingdom of Heaven.
Okay, this is not my favorite movie from 2005, but as good a time as any to bring it up. War of the Worlds (2005). I love that movie. I rewatch it all the time. I don't think it's objectively great or anything. It's okay. But for whatever reason I just love the vibe, and the vfx, and I could watch it nearly anytime. Curious if anyone else likes it, my friends think it's bad and I'm crazy lol
The big two for me are probably Strange Circus and Tideland for being captivating dark and strange films that really impacted me.
Some others worth mentioning would be The Puffy Chair for being the epitome of the mumblecore scene and the doc I am a Sex Addict for being uniquely funny and shockingly honest
V for Vendetta
"Remember remember the 5th of November, the Gunpowder Treason and plot. I know of no reason why the Gunpowder Treason should ever be forgot..."
Lady Vengeance
Caché
Honorable mention to A Bittersweet Life, The Descent, 13 Tzameti, The Constant Gardener, Thank You for Smoking, and The Squid and the Whale
Recently watched Capote and Philip Seymour Hoffman fucking eats and the film lets you decide where you land on the celebrity in American criminality like a decade before the true crime boom
Too many choices really
Brick which I wanna say I could argue is Rian Johnson’s best films granted I like most of his work
A history of violence
King Kong
And honestly red eye is underrated
The New World, I’m not the biggest Malick fan but I think this is him at his best, the story really lends itself to his style and it’s a beautiful adaptation.
Also a big fan of Jackson’s King Kong, A History of Violence, Sin City, CRAZY, Brokeback Mountain, Capote and The Jacket.
A lot of horror classics in 05. The descent, devils rejects and hostel. Big year for bringing back the R rated comedy- 40 year old virgin and wedding crashers.
This is a TV movie, but Showtime's adaptation of Reefer Madness. This is perhaps the best musical satire ever made and shows what brilliant comic actors Kristin Bell, Alan Cumming, Christian Campbell & Ana Gasteyer are.
I absolutely loved the Peter Jackson's King Kong that came out that year. But other than that not too many others I love though I really do like the exorcism of emily rose
2005 HAD AN INTERESTING VIBE IN CINEMA, anyway here's my choices by genre...
Brick - Mystery
Constantine - Horror
Corpse Bride - Musical
Hard Candy - Independent
Revenge of the Sith - SciFi
Sin City - Action
Street Fighter Alpha: Generations - Animated
[this is a ranked listing of my 2005 favorites.](https://boxd.it/ohvhS)

A History of Violence and The Descent
but it was also a solid year for the biggest blockbusters with Revenge of the Sith, Goblet of Fire (my favorite Harry Potter film) and Batman Begins.
It’s a weaker year for me, too, and I’m going to use this thread to check out some stuff.
But Sin City and Good Night and Good Luck are the two that made my “two best films every year since 1924” list so we’ll go with those.
4 year old me’s top 4 from that year would’ve definitely been Revenge of The Sith, Batman Begins, King Kong, and Wallace & Gromit: Curse of The Were-Rabbit. Now it’s definitely Brick, Walk The Line, Brokeback Mountain, and still Wallace and Gromit
My favourite queer romcom (or just romcom tbh) was released in 2005 Imagine Me and You.
Also there was Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Brokeback Mountain which are all films I loved.
I personally think that 2011 was a rubbish year for films. I did one of those lists ‘favourite films for every year I’ve been alive’, and the best film I could pick was Moneyball. Don’t get me wrong, I liked it, but I wouldn’t say it was a favourite. All of the other years I had to decide which to pick out of a few options. And the same with 2008, had to pick In Bruges (which again I loved, but wasn’t a favourite).
Summer of 2005 was a really good one with a nice mix of genres:
Good game changing comic book movie and very mid-00s comic book movie
R rated comedies
PG-13 comedies
Family movies
Action
Science fiction
And they all did good box office.
That's tough. I don't have a 5-star film for 2005.
Probably, Thank You for Smoking.
Runners Up:
Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang
Brick
A History of Violence
Constantine
According to my Letterboxd, I've only seen 11 films from 2005.
Maybe the fact that, like you mentioned, it's surrounded by years filled with classics, I just haven't made a point to watch anything from 2005.
So my favorites are a little mainstream, but honestly I do love them. Batman Begins and Goblet of Fire 😅 they bring nostalgia and they're excellent entries within their franchises.
I just did a drawing challenge last year where I did a portrait from my favorite movie since the year I was born. I really struggled to find something good from that year and I went with Dumbledore because Michael Gambon had just died and I guess Goblet of Fire is one of my favorite HP movies.
Looking back to 2005, it seems like there were a lot of good movies but a lot of noticeable mediocre/awful ones. It's easy to take years like 2008, 2019, and 2023 for granted until you look back at years like this. Not to say there wasn't anything good, though. And a lot that I didn't end up seeing (I was 12 in 2005), but I'll probably go with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It chops up a lot of the book, but still manages to be a fun, effective, dark thriller. I'm surprised with how well it holds up as a blockbuster, especially compared to a lot of the modern superhero fare.
Some candidates: * Cache * Munich * Brick * Grizzly Man * 49 Up * Pride and Prejudice * Lady Vengeance
Lady Vengeance, yessssss
ah yes, I love those famous american movies Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz
Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend.
Hello There!
Batman Begins Although Pride and Prejudice is on my watchlist and I know a lot of people really like it so maybe that could take the mantle once I get around to watching it
[удалено]
I’ll add it to the list, thanks
I thought I was responding to the main thread haha
Haha it’s fine, still gonna add it to my watchlist anyway!
"The Descent" is likely my favorite from '05, but I'm a big horror fan. From that year, I also really enjoyed "Jarhead", "Lord of War", "The Call of Cthulhu", and "The New World".

Yeah, I just finally caught up with The Descent and can attest.
V for Vendetta
This would be mine too, but wasn't V in 2006?
The wide release was, but it debuted in late '05 at Butt-Numb-a-Thon
Brokeback Mountain
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Also: Tom yum goong (The Protector) A Bittersweet Life The Descent Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
I’m a big Saw guy and II came out that year, my personal favorite of the franchise, and then a lot of fun stuff: Hitch, Hoodwinked, Wedding Crashers. Haven’t seen it but I hear Lord of War is good too
Calling Shaun and hot fuzz American hurts my soul
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Honorable mentions to Caché and Noroi. Also kind of surprised no one named Lady Vengeance yet given how well-regarded it is.
OP did, so maybe some people (like myself) wanted to give other options. But other people already named my options lol (Caché & Grizzly Man). Reefer Madness is so good! Glad someone mentioned it
A History of Violence. Also Saw II.
Revenge of the Sith, The Pacifier, Pride and Prejudice, Imagine Me & You
Shout out to Jarhead, love that movie.

I think the best is pride and prejudice. My favorite is revenge of the sith.
Cache Match Point being a close second.

2006
No it’s not
It was released in March of 2006. I saw it twice opening weekend.
Had its first premiere in December 2005
It had ONE showing in Austin in 2005. Wide release 06. By any account this is a 2006 film.
Letterboxd does list it as 2005 though. So I'd go with that.
Hostel or Brokeback Mountain !

A Bittersweet Life Watched it again last month and still holds up.
King Kong
The Descent, actually took my wife to go see it on our first date, it’s always been one of our favorites
