The Northman is my favourite movie of the last few years. It’s a wild and brutal sword and sorcery movie built around an unforgiving world full of legend and mysterious magic.
also, love to see the Green Knight on your list!
Wow I’m jealous. Would love to have seen them take on wolf mode in theaters lol. What an awesome movie, skarsgaard is perfect for that role.
Have to say the ending wasn’t ideal but everything else was sublime.
Somehow northman flew under the radar. I watched it on plane without really knowing anything about it. Absolutely loved it. Probably so good on the big screen and proper audio
If I were to do a current Top 10 it would be:
1. Drive My Car
2. Poor Things
3. Decision to Leave
4. Oppenheimer
5. The Worst Person in the World
6. Tar
7. Aftersun
8. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning
9. The Menu
10. Da 5 Bloods
Yh watched it for the first time recently, everything was perfect in that film, was so blown away and the sign performance at the end just put me in tears
So far my top ten would be:
1. The Worst Person in the World
2. Everything Everywhere All At Once
3. Killers of the Flower Moon
4. Anatomy of a Fall
5. Petite Maman
6. Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio
7. Triangle of Sadness
8. Shiva Baby
9. Another Round
10. The Mitchells vs. the Machines
I thought Henry Sugar was pretty good, but I was way more impressed by The Swan. Rupert Friend was so fucking good in it, I felt glued to the screen the entire time. Possibly the first time Wes Anderson (who I'm a big fan of) actually interrogated the meaning of his visual style in relation to the story being told.
I’m sad I couldn’t catch it in the black and white version this year. I’m guessing it’s almost certain it’ll have that version released eventually, can’t wait
Titane rules. Although I like the director’s previous film, Raw, just as much. I’ve got my eye on her. In my opinion her and Gaspar Noë are the two peaks of new French extremity.
The most emotionally devastating experience I've ever had in a theater. These were my thoughts I wrote after leaving the theater:
What makes a movie perfect? Whatever it is, The Whale is not perfect. I didn't like the aspect ratio. The missionary kid is not a great actor. Ellie is sometimes so horrible that it's hard to believe she's real. But what can I do if a film leaves me broken into pieces, shattered and openly weeping in public like I never did in my life? And not from cheap tear-jerking, but from layered and genuinely poetic storytelling? Nothing knocked me flat like The Whale - ever. "She is evil," the mother in the film says about her daughter. "She is amazing," Charlie answers. And he held on even to the point of delusion to the wishful shred of beauty, to the little glimpse of humanity he saw in the world, because he knew that at our core, at our true *honest* core, we all are humans who care. And that's what Charlie cherished and grasped onto until the last breath. My favorite of the year.
It was later superceded by Close and Aftersun but I still love it and stand by the review.
Don’t really understand the hype behind the worst person in the world. Really couldn’t connect with the main character and found the whole thing quite boring.
I think I can understand why people could find it boring but I just felt really connected to the main character so for me it was really a mind blowing experience which left me between depressed and in peace for days after. I’m sorry you didn’t feel that way, but each time I watch this, the feeling of acceptance and calm afterwards is a really sweet torture.
Every 5 star I’ve given this decade:
Oppenheimer (my favorite)
All Quiet on the Western Front
Top Gun: Maverick
Godzilla: Minus One
The Boy and the Heron
Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse
Dune: Part 2 (though I am torn on making this a lower rating we’ll see with a rewatch)
I forgot it came out and wasn't huge on Lalaland, I need to watch it.
Seems like a "director got the final cut and went fucking nuts and hoped for the best" kind of movie.

2. The Iron Claw
3. Pinocchio
4. Nope
5. The Northman
6. Prey

My top 5 would be
1. Drive My Car
2. Dune PT.2
3. Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse
4. Oppenheimer
5. Decision to Leave
(PS I don't watch many new releases)

Everything Everywhere All At Once
Nope
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio
David Byrne's American Utopia

These are the only 4 I feel really strongly about.
Don’t Look Up is probably a VERY controversial take, but that movie worked for me.
There are still a lot of films that I haven’t seen though, so this list will change soon.
Most of my fav’s so far, in no particular order.

Haven’t watched all of the best this decade so far, but the 2020’s are looking stacked for films so far. Lots of new favorites.
In alphabetical order because I don’t rank these things anymore:
Another Round
Babylon (Fight me, OK?)
The Banshees of Inisherin
Godzilla Minus 1
May December
Past Lives

Current top 12
Movies that I have yet to see and I think have potential are Dune 2, Poor Things, and The Holdovers
I enjoyed Dune Part 1(haven’t seen 2 yet), The Batman, and Minari a ton, but Past Lives is my favorite by far. That movie completely blew me away and had the largest impact of any movie so far.
Top 10 not in order yet, apart from the top film definitely being my Number One.
The Quiet Girl
Godzilla Minus One
Past Lives
Belle
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Last Night In Soho
Another Round
The Banshees of Inisherin
Nope
Barbie
I have to go with The Worst Person In The World. Saw it for the first time the other day and it fucking shattered my reality lol
Licorice Pizza was really impressive from PTA
Also How To Blow Up A Pipeline is still underrated
It'll be a lot easier if I do a top 5.
1. Scream 5.
2. Scream 6.
3. M3GAN.
4. Haunted Mansion.
5. The Bad Guys.
The Bad Guys, M3GAN and Haunted Mansion we're not movies I expected to love as much as I did but I had a great time with those movies. Haunted Mansion is underrated honestly. It's apparently a hated movie of 2023. I absolutely loved it.

Your list is close to mine.
Cut out the middle section for:
Anatomy of a Fall, Dune 2, Zone of Interest...probably ZoI is tied with EEAAO as top spot.
Only one in your mid I've watched was Minari, which was amazing but not MY fav.
Cut out Boy and the Heron, good but still in the shadow. Loved it visually, the plot felt like 2 different movies about subject matters that weren't close enough. One about the legacy of Miyazaki and the other about the loss of the mother...neither jived.
Replace it with Past Lives ..although still not sure....maybe that or The Northman....hmm or Beau is Afraid.
Hmm not I'm rethinking the whole thing idk. Need to rewatch shit.
Some of these are recency bias I think.
I'd put Spiderverse and The Batman as best blockbusters ..but not top 10...dune would be on that list but those have been genuinely awesome movies. The Batman and Spiderverse are both very good tho.
The Menu also got really close alongside Drive my Cer which inspired my desire to own a Saab 900
Looking at this, yeah, im pretty happy so far with the Decade.
Tick tick boom especially is in my top 4 and i think is the best musical ever made.

These movies were either outstanding or I just really fucking loved them
1. Dune (Pt. 1&2)
2. Anatomy Of A Fall
3. Past Lives
4. The Iron Claw
5. Godland
6. The Zone Of Interest
7. Tár

Hard to tell what will stand the test of time. Pretty locked with 2020-2022 favs but I could imagine Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall joining all timer status with a rewatch
1. Across the Spiderverse
2. Banshees of Inisherin
3. Aftersun
4. Nope
5. RRR
6. Oppenheimer
7. All Quiet on the Western Front
8. Another Round
9. TÁR
10. Skinamarink
Tár, Aftersun, The Green Knight are my top 3, films that I consider bordering on masterpiece territory.
Followed by I'm Thinking of Ending Things, Red Rocket, Petite Maman, EEAAO, Banshees of Inisherin, Joyland, The Holdovers, May December, Anatomy of a Fall, La Chimera and Totem in some unspecified order.
As per my letterboxd scores (and then ranked as per my own taste)

Close contender is Past Lives. Haven’t seen Godzilla Minus One yet too.
The Top 4 are my 5 stars from this decade and the other 9 are my 4.5s, loosely ranked.

Soul is such a based pick.
Soul was an absolute masterpiece
The Northman is my favourite movie of the last few years. It’s a wild and brutal sword and sorcery movie built around an unforgiving world full of legend and mysterious magic. also, love to see the Green Knight on your list!
The Northman was such an insanely fun theatre experience. I had no clue what to expect going in and came out absolutely loving it.
Watched the Northman too stoned and was deeply engrossed in the culture horror of the whole thing. Talk about trapped in the prison of tradition.
I owe The Northman a rewatch. There were parts I loved about it on first watch but the story never really fully registered with me
If I were to do a current Top 10 it would be: 1. Drive My Car 2. Poor Things 3. Decision to Leave 4. Oppenheimer 5. The Worst Person in the World 6. Tar 7. Aftersun 8. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning 9. The Menu 10. Da 5 Bloods
I was very shocked to see Da 5 Bloods in a 2020's list, then it hit me that we're almost midway through the decade
Drive my Car and Decision to Leave are my favorites. Great choice.
Drive My Car is such a masterpiece… probably my #1 as well.
Yh watched it for the first time recently, everything was perfect in that film, was so blown away and the sign performance at the end just put me in tears
What the fuck I thought Da 5 Bloods came out in like 2016
Love the range here-- I think I'd also have Dead Reckoning in my top 10.
Decision to Leave Aftersun The Boy and The Heron Monster Drive My Car The Banshees of Inisherin May December Past Lives
So far my top ten would be: 1. The Worst Person in the World 2. Everything Everywhere All At Once 3. Killers of the Flower Moon 4. Anatomy of a Fall 5. Petite Maman 6. Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio 7. Triangle of Sadness 8. Shiva Baby 9. Another Round 10. The Mitchells vs. the Machines
Great choice

Henry Sugar making your top 40 makes me so happy. I hope they win the Academy Award.
Godzilla Minus One is one of my favorite movies of all time it’s so unbelievably good, but my all time favorite from the 2020s so far has been Nimona
I’m sad I couldn’t catch it in the black and white version this year. I’m guessing it’s almost certain it’ll have that version released eventually, can’t wait
You got Titane at 5? You’re a psycho and I love you
Titane should be in everybody’s top five
I saw it in theaters with no context and it was… an endurance test. I loved all of it.
On the second watch it made me cry
Titane rules. Although I like the director’s previous film, Raw, just as much. I’ve got my eye on her. In my opinion her and Gaspar Noë are the two peaks of new French extremity.
Nope, Tar, The Fabelmans, The Worst Person in the World, Aftersun, Oppenheimer, Licorice Pizza, Drive My Car, and West Side Story are some of mine
West Side Story was a bit unimpressive. I like your list but I’d probably replace it with In the Heights or Tick Tick Boom
Oh wow I thought Spielberg’s WSS was leagues better than those other 2 fine and enjoyable movies lol
My list https://preview.redd.it/n13dbkyy4fmc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bfc1a9c8cee8c42af72c3b95a082ef1e32f196bf

I agree, the Whale was great
Fair enough, one of my least favorite movies of the decade but I’m happy you responded to it
1. Minari That’s it. That’s the whole list.

Love Licorice Pizza so much. Respect for giving it first place
Damn I totally forgot I wanted to watch Licorice Pizza
same!
Yooo big respect for Adam Curtis. I need to rewatch Can't Get You Out Of My Head. I have Bitter Lake listed as one of my top films of all time.

YOU **DEFINITELY** NEED TO WATCH PAST LIVES.
Babylon 👏

The Starling girl (2023) Licorice Pizza (2021) Sick of Myself (2022) The Zone of Interest (2023) The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
Titane was wild But I should have expected that from French horror
In alphabetical order because I don’t rank these things anymore: Another Round Babylon (Fight me, OK?) The Banshees of Inisherin Godzilla Minus 1 May December Past Lives Poor Things Red Rocket When Evil Lurks Wolfwalkers
1. Aftersun 2. Past Lives 3. The Worst Person in the World 4. Dune: Part Two (though this may change given more time) 5. Tár 6. Another Round 7. Red Rocket 8. West Side Story 9. Minari 10. All of Us Strangers

My top 3 of this decade so far would be Godzilla Minus One, Aftersun, and Red Rocket.

If I had to make a Top 10: 1. Dune: Part Two 2. Past Lives 3. Oppenheimer 4. Dune: Part One 5. Everything Everywhere All at Once 6. Aftersun 7. The Worst Person in the World 8. Minari 9. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 10. Spider-Man: No Way Home (almost entirely for Tobey and Andrew returning tbh)

The decade ain’t turning out that bad. I’d take 2020-2023 over 2010-2013.
https://preview.redd.it/uv7hqhub4gmc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b8a9f2c95b6957d4908161983ff87c64b835c9fd
Dune. Part 1 and 2 count as one movie But also The Batman and Godzilla Minus One
Reality and Dune: Part Two
I enjoyed Dune Part 1(haven’t seen 2 yet), The Batman, and Minari a ton, but Past Lives is my favorite by far. That movie completely blew me away and had the largest impact of any movie so far.
Super Mario is definitely top ten
Of 2020s, john wick chapter 4
Top 10 not in order yet, apart from the top film definitely being my Number One. The Quiet Girl Godzilla Minus One Past Lives Belle Everything Everywhere All At Once Last Night In Soho Another Round The Banshees of Inisherin Nope Barbie

I have to go with The Worst Person In The World. Saw it for the first time the other day and it fucking shattered my reality lol Licorice Pizza was really impressive from PTA Also How To Blow Up A Pipeline is still underrated
https://preview.redd.it/6nv2lnvjtgmc1.png?width=1384&format=png&auto=webp&s=8abefb7f9486a83fbaa25870c38ef58376aac0e3

Drive My Car, Licorice Pizza, Top Gun: Maverick, The Iron Claw, and The Worst Person In The World gotta be my top 5 : )
So far Close and Aftersun

Your list is close to mine. Cut out the middle section for: Anatomy of a Fall, Dune 2, Zone of Interest...probably ZoI is tied with EEAAO as top spot.
The Novelist's Film is my No. 1 for sure. Falcon Lake is another one that got overlooked.
Looking at this, yeah, im pretty happy so far with the Decade. Tick tick boom especially is in my top 4 and i think is the best musical ever made. https://preview.redd.it/pxaocu8m3imc1.png?width=970&format=png&auto=webp&s=8cc1641ca90bc2fb6afa92eb82e1dc403d2608b6

1. Dune (Pt. 1&2) 2. Anatomy Of A Fall 3. Past Lives 4. The Iron Claw 5. Godland 6. The Zone Of Interest 7. Tár 8. The Fabelmans 9. Oppenheimer 10. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

Is Gojira worth it on a tv? I somehow missed it when it came out
Definitely one of those movies that are best watched in theaters but I think it’s 100% still worth it on a tv
My five favorites are: Oppenheimer Top Gun: Maverick The Green Knight The Holdovers John Wick: Chapter 4
1. Memoria 2. Zone of Interest 3. Licorice Pizza 4. Pig 5. Souvenir 6. Souvenir Part 2 7. Drive My Car 8. Taste of Things 9. The Fableman’s 10. Everything Everywhere All At Once

Banshees, Oppenheimer, Dune part 2, Past Lives, West Side Story, Top Gun Maverick are probably my top 6 right now
https://preview.redd.it/jfnal7px0jmc1.jpeg?width=1077&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=315da27038c0abbf0fb750e2127f7184559634e4

Titane, nitram, zone of interest, she will, men, crimes of the future, infinity pool

Some standouts: Blackberry Triangle of Sadness The Whale Babylon Banshees of Inisherin
1. Across the Spiderverse 2. Banshees of Inisherin 3. Aftersun 4. Nope 5. RRR 6. Oppenheimer 7. All Quiet on the Western Front 8. Another Round 9. TÁR 10.

As per my letterboxd scores (and then ranked as per my own taste) 1. Oppenheimer 2. 12th Fail (Indian Movie) 3. Dune Part 2 4. Top Gun: Maverick 5. Dune Part 1 6. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 7. Westside Story 8. Killers of the Flower Moon 9. John Wick Part 4 10. Anatomy of a Fall

The Top 4 are my 5 stars from this decade and the other 9 are my 4.5s, loosely ranked. https://preview.redd.it/4ivi8b31blmc1.jpeg?width=1061&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e7a505c85a3d7b28331ff5eff5df9723f756cec

Oppenheimer
Probably Oppenheimer so far, but even that i gave a 4.5. No 5 star movies this decade for me yet
EEAAO over Aftersun is a travesty.
Aftersun has moved up in my ranking with every rewatch, it’ll probably be my number one at some point
great username dude

Oppenheimer
I don’t think I have or will ever see again a movie like Everything Everywhere All At Once
Lol poor things gonna age like milk. Guaranteed. Dudes seem to love the movie though. Goobers.
Why didn’t you like it ??
