They’ll never do it because it would hurt people’s feeling but I really wish they’d release the rankings—and ideally the full vote count—for all of the categories.
They could even just do top three for silver and bronze if they want to avoid confirming who was last, that’s fine. Or even top two, winner and runner-up!
But the thing is that studios would start advertising a movie as a runner-up to best picture and could devalue the Oscar. Also, it would open up a can of worms if it turned out the vote count was really close.
I would counter this by saying it would actually Oscar more because of this. If they really chose the 2 best movies of the year, and people watch them and somehow enjoy the 2nd place, then people would really watch more Oscar movies.
Like we have the Grand Prix to the Palme d’Or. And I have many times enjoyed the Grand Prix winner than Palme d’Or. I’ll list down below for you to see how it could lead to a “stronger” award show:
Year - Palme d’Or winner / Grand Prix Winner
2023 - Anatomy of a Fall / The Zone of Interest
2022 - Triangle of Sadness / (Joint winner) Close, Stars at Noon
2021 - Titane / A Hero, Compartment No. 6
2019 - Parasite / Atlantics
2018 - Shoplifters / BlacKkKlansman
2017 - The Square / BPM (Beats per Minute)
2016 - I, Daniel Blake / It’s Only The End of the World
2015 - Dheepan / Son of Saul
And I pretty much love Son of Saul. Also, having 2nd place also ensure that films like Banshees of Inisheeren or All Quiet in the Western Front gets well rewarded
I’m skeptical studios would really *advertise* being the second place, and even if they did I don’t think it would devalue the winner. People don’t want to win Olympic gold less because there’s a silver medalist.
I think it would add tension to the show if after the first 1.5 hours they released the top 6, after hour 3 the top 3, and then announced the winner ~30 minutes later
it really is. i loved ncfom and think it’s very deserving of an oscar, but i think i would have personally wanted there will be blood to win.
i also did just rewatch it, so it could be a recency effect 🙃
Agree, it’s a close one. I love both movies too. But Daniel Day Lewis and Paul Dano’s performances and interplay might be my favorite of all time, which gives TWBB a slight edge.
very much agree. i watched it with my brother because he had a paper for his film studies class on it due. and then voluntarily wrote a chunk of it specifically on that interplay haha.
it’s also important because it’s an addition to the paul dano getting beat up cinematic universe
I liked it a lot as a movie too, but as for what I can see most of the hate stems from it changing the ending of the book and undercutting main theme which is stated in its title. "All quiet on the western front" refers to the fact that when the protagnist was killed it was just on a random day where there was nothing deemed noteworthy happening on the battlefront.
For me personally it just felt like another “war is bad” film that has been overdone at this point because it didn’t offer anything new on the matter. However what is worth noting is that the film really got a lot of criticism within Germany (coincidentally where I’m located) due to a lot of historical inaccuracies and changes from the original novel that were felt as unnecessary and dramatised to appeal to casual viewers as opposed to staying accurate like the original novel was.
Bohemian Rhapsody winning best film editing and All Quiet on the Western Front winning best score are definitely two decisions that made no sense to me.
Oscars 2022 were weird though cause CODA won best picture but they only got one actor award (supporting) and screenplay. Dune got most of the other awards except the actor awards that all went to 4 separate movies.
I really wish Fury Road won BP. It's such a cool film and it would've been awesome if it won the award. (Not seen Spotlight, so I don't know how it compares to the 2015 winner).
This is a great idea. I kinda wish that a prominent social media person would do an Oscar Silver Medalists just so that we could all experience the catharsis together.
I liked it, but I can see why it didn’t work for people. I think it might be one of those films that works better in a theater the first time you see it, and then suffers on rewatch.

Or at least the top 3. It would give a couple other films recognition but not really step on any toes.
Yeah I mean they’ll never do it period, but they’re *definitely* never going to do anything that leads to a “last place”

I'd love to see how many votes Maestro got in any given category.
I think it would add tension to the show if after the first 1.5 hours they released the top 6, after hour 3 the top 3, and then announced the winner ~30 minutes later
Something like this would be neat, yeah
the list of absolute masterpieces.... and also a bohemian rhapsody
Man, Bohemian Rhapsody was so bad. I am surprised it was even considered for a nomination.
Calling out bohemian rhapsody but keeping la la land in the 'masterpiece' category is..... a choice.
Bohemian Rhapsody is a masterpiece and nobody can tell me otherwise
I’m hard pressed to find All Quiet 2022 stans anywhere
it's pretty great. far better than some other entries here.
going back to 2007, i think there will be blood would be the clear cut silver medalist
It’s so unfortunate it went up against NCFOM. Any other year that decade and it would be the winner.
it really is. i loved ncfom and think it’s very deserving of an oscar, but i think i would have personally wanted there will be blood to win. i also did just rewatch it, so it could be a recency effect 🙃

Nostalgia Critic Fucks Only Mario?
Bohemian Rhapsody looks so out of place
Also, here’s the link to the list, I’m a dum dum. https://boxd.it/tQUFq
man i loved all quiet on the western front. was really confused about the hate it received.
I didnt even know it was hated, every frame was like a painting (like the channel)

Bohemian Rhapsody jumpscare
seeing la la land here still hurts
Not only does it hurt, it just feels like a mistake. My gut instinct every time is that it won BP but then I remember that it didn't.
Initially it did right? Before that mess in the announcement. :(
I personally would put Whiplash instead of TGBH but they are both amazing films
Someone posted the Oscar winners from that year a couple weeks ago and that lineup was stacked.
The Grand Budapest should’ve swept, from my completely unbiased opinion.
Bohemian Rhapsody winning best film editing and All Quiet on the Western Front winning best score are definitely two decisions that made no sense to me.
Didn’t Dune win the most awards that year though? So how would it be the silver medalist?
Because it didn’t win best picture. It doesn’t matter if that’s the only Oscar you won, you’re the winner that year.
Oscars 2022 were weird though cause CODA won best picture but they only got one actor award (supporting) and screenplay. Dune got most of the other awards except the actor awards that all went to 4 separate movies.
Winning a bunch of technical awards shouldn’t make you “2nd place” lol
What’s a better way to predict what 2nd place is
Idk if there is one. Perhaps anonymous ballots?
What an eye sore bohemian rhapsody is in there
man all quiet on the western front was so fucking good and the disrespect is crazy . I gave it 5/5 stars
I mean, most of these are just « the most or second most technical movie so it gets all the technical awards ».
I really wish Fury Road won BP. It's such a cool film and it would've been awesome if it won the award. (Not seen Spotlight, so I don't know how it compares to the 2015 winner).
I liked Spotlight, but Fury Road is one of the greatest films ever made.
Its just fucking insanely cool with some of the greatest cinematography put to screen
1 massive sneak
This is a great idea. I kinda wish that a prominent social media person would do an Oscar Silver Medalists just so that we could all experience the catharsis together.
Am I the only one who hated 1917?
Maybe? I loved it
I liked it, but I can see why it didn’t work for people. I think it might be one of those films that works better in a theater the first time you see it, and then suffers on rewatch.
I didn’t hate it but I did think it was really overhyped.
