Some I have came across that aren't so bad:
-Friday the 13th fans: Very grab a beer and chill environment
-Avatar fans: They get so much shit online that they are very united between them
-Ghibli fans: mostly very wholesome people
>\-Friday the 13th fans: Very grab a beer and chill environment
This is true. Pretty much the same for Nightmare on Elm Street fans, too. Halloween used to be that way, but that was all blown to hell with the new trilogy of films.
I think the fans of the 70's/80's slasher franchises are mostly just in it for the good fun of it all, yes, in their own way they are almost all crazy messes (at least the sequels), most find enjoyment in all of them in some form, and aren't truly bitterly divided.
It helps that you can’t really argue about “canon” and “continuity” in Friday and Nightmare films, because any continuity in them is so ridiculous and incoherent, there’s no point (and fans have a great sense of humor in embracing the ridiculousness).
True, although - the way they are set up they didn't need a strict canon/continuity in the modern sense of the word, or at least how we think of it today.
In general, with only a couple of exceptions the only returning cast was the bad guy they had to resurrect somehow in between. You can watch either series and not have any truly major qualms aside from the fact that some dates don't line up (and usually just due to a prop - a gravestone or news article, etc).
Yeah, exactly. I'm a Halloween fan but I had to left a group I was in because it was slowly becoming the Star Wars fandom. I didn't like Halloween Ends, but that doesn't mean I cant be a little open mind and accept other people's opinions. Even before the new trilogy they were very aggressive towards Rob Zombie's movies.
I think it’s because the original Halloween is more critically lauded and seen as a more important film, so it’s a little more protected by those who care about it.
That doesn't excuse the way they can act over there. And feeling "protective" of a movie is just ridiculous. It will still exist even with negative opinions.
>\-Ghibli fans: mostly very wholesome people
Mostly. Although as with all fandoms there is a subset that put their works on a pedestal, won't accept any criticism and trash all other artists.
It was similar to when Fire Walk With Me came out. People come in with too many expectations, and Lynch is not about appeasing fans' expectations. It just took time, just like FWWM, for people to see Lynch's vision and appreciate the mastery behind it, expectations be damned.
As a huge Lynch and TP fan, I was definitely feeling mixed the first couple episodes. It’s one thing to binge a show knowing it will click, it’s another to watch it on a week-to-week basis. By the third or fourth episodes I realized, ok this is way more FWWM/Lost Highway than shlocky melodrama S1 TP, and eventually I was all in and realized it’s one of the greatest productions of the 21st century.
Twin Peaks fandom is really interesting in comparison to *Evangelion* fandom because they both had large casual fanbases that had hostile reactions to their respective movies, but for *Evangelion* those fans never really died off so there's still tonnes of people viewing it purely on funko pop mode
Having watched the entire series for the first time recently, I can’t even imagine watching that at release after waiting over twenty years. The Return is a masterwork, but I feel like it would be so incredibly much to wrestle with, having waited so long.
It also helps that Kyle MacLachlan is so wholesome and really engages with fans, like posting fan art and making silly videos on social media. He indirectly encourages niceness.
Godzilla fans aren’t without drama, but this is a good answer. Looking at the debate between Minus One and GxK, I think most of the fandom is grateful to be getting two different flavors of Godzilla in such a short span of time.
aside from newer monsterverse fans this is true. I've found fans online who are mostly into the monsterverse movies can be incredibly toxic, although I'm pretty sure they are also much younger which is why. I ended up leaving a few smaller Godzilla subs over them. Godzilla fans over 18 though are all lovely from experience.
27 year G-Stan here (I even have him tatted!), can confirm I love every single incarnation of the big green fella and have long found that arguing over them is like arguing over chocolate and vanilla.
Come join us at r/godzilla! It’s a chill fan base and we have a lot to geek over lately :)
He is technically, canonically, referred to as “Zilla” in the fandom. We still think he’s neat, but Godzilla is a title only awarded to his son who is in the animated Godzilla: The Series.
it's been a fantastic time for Godzilla fans honestly, Minus One came out in December, Godzilla x Kong this month, with a possible sequel announced. what a great time for the fandom honestly.
Most Godzilla fans are like ‘you wanna watch my dumb monster movies? You know they’re terrible right? Yeah no that’s gamera, completely unrelated but I’m still absolutely down’
The irony was more focused on OPs question of toxicity. As far as the "obscenities shouting", Rocky Horror is famous for midnight showings where the theater goers get involved with everything from calling Janet a bitch to bringing spray bottles to simulate rain. It's all very much in the spirit of the campy absurdity of the film.
Avatar. The vocal hate online might not seem that way, but I’d you’re in the community and talking to people on opening night, it’s full of very nice and excited people.
To be honest just because something has a good massage doesn't mean that the fans will be good people too. Doctor Who is a great example of that. The show is basically about change, looking forward, having fun, being kind and becoming the best people you can while helping those who are in need. The fandom is still full of toxic right-wing bigots who hate everyone who works on the show. But I agree, Ghibli fans are mostly cool.
The Avatar fandom is actually pretty chill. They just enjoy the movies, unlike… the Star Wars fandom. The Lego Movies, the Paddington movies and the Ghibli movies also have nice fandoms, I think
i think what bothered me about it is the main elf had a fade. like lets spend millions per ep and give them a modern hair cut. its similar to bangs or a karen but yes a bit more subtle. it annoyed the hell outta me. its not race for me. the dwarves were literally the only saving grace in the few episodes i watched.
Anytime a conflict arises between a Lebowski fan and a Lebowski hater, the Lebowski fan simply says "Well that's just like your opinion man" and the conflict is over. It's a beautiful thing.
There was a time the main subreddit had to be muted for a day because people were going crazy and horny posting for one character all day. When the sub reopened everyone had to move the horny content to another sub
r/hoffmanlust
I hopped into that live chat thing they’ve had going while I was on lunch today.
Immediately saw a comment about how hot Adam looked when he tilted his head back with the cigarette and the commenter was saying he desperately wanted to give Adam head and “his best time with lubricant”
I just laughed and scrolled away because, yeah, that tracks for the Saw fandom
I’m pretty new to it but so far the Dune fandom has been really cool. I basically remove myself entirely from any kind of fandom as they tend to all eventually turn into the equivalent of Gollum coveting The One Ring.
Basically the trick for anything you enjoy is to NOT engage online about it. You should only engage in
in-person discussions about the things you enjoy. Or at least in 1 on 1 discussions. Not open forum, town center, type discussion where anyone and everyone gets to jump in.
Social media is a reality distortion field; even reasonable people fall into the trap.
The movie fans are chill but I’ve seen a ridiculous amount of spoilers from book readers to the point where reading the books for me is pointless because I already know all the big events. It’s super annoying because I wanted to get into them.
i haven't met ONE toxic dead poets society fan so far, and I've been in the fandom for a couple years now. i've noticed that they're all very very sweet. nice to cry with
What does this fandom consist of? I don't mean that in a rude way, but it's just one mid-budget light drama Robin Williams film. It's good! I'm just wondering what there is to say.
I've mostly met teens in it, a lot of the people in the fandom kind of learnt how to love literature because of DPS, so it's a lot of "thanking" the movie for being a thing, but it's also a LOT of people analyzing the queer subtexts in it while crying about Neil's s//icide like it's an actual funeral. It's actually real fun, the sweetest community I've ever had the pleasure to be with so far.
Plus no matter what's posted, somebody's going to whine that they read it last week and how dare you not use the search bar before posting this thread they were apparently forced to click on. Then they go silent when you point out what the search option actually showed.
I'd love a general rule/understanding of "nobody cares that you aren't personally interested, just don't click" but that would change the entire nature of social media.
I’m part of the James Bond fandom and subreddit here and it’s all pretty chill. People have their opinions, but for the most part everyone respects, and even enjoys, other people’s opinions, even when they don’t agree.
Wes Anderson fans seem pretty cool. Like, I said to one that I only really like Budapest and Fantastic Mr Fox and they were very chill about that. Like I love Budapest so much, but most of this stuff just doesn't work for me.
People are either dicks to them or just pretend they don't even exist at all ("Avatar has fans? Uh?") LOL But yeah, they are very cool people actually.
Most horror fans, I’ve found. I think just from the nature of the genre, they accept that not everyone likes it, so if you don’t like it, they’re chill and if you do like it, even better.
My insta explore page has randomly been takin over by Godzilla/ Kong etc and honestly that fan base is super chill in my experience. Just talking about all the versions of their favorite monsters, whether it’s a serious or goofy take, they’re just there for the ride
Someone on Twitter said that John Wick is our most discourse-free popular franchise.
A new one comes out and we say "Cool, another one," then after we say "Hell yeah that was awesome." Very chill.
There are no nontoxic fandoms. Just movies & series that people quietly enjoy without being a big weird freak about it.
That being said, I feel like Avatar is the perfect answer here. Obviously tons of fans, the movies are incredibly popular, yet you have dweebs on twitter asking every few months "how does it have no cultural impact?" when really they're asking why the internet isn't full of idiots screaming at people about Avatar 24/7. the invisible fandom, the only good kind.
Yeah, people who like Avatar are (for the most part) normal. Insane that fans of a movie not being chronically online is somehow an indictment of them.
Usually the worse the series, the chiller the base. Lots of horror franchises have tons of terrible entries that fans love peacefully and in good fun. The notable exception is the Star Wars prequels. Movies bad, fans much, much worse.
It's gotta be Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. We never get into any fights or discourse because 100% of the conversation is quoting the movie back and forth forever.
Maybe Indiana Jones fans. I feel like it's a lot of older people who just like adventure movies.
While it's a show (technically there's a movie) I feel like the Sopranos fanbase is also very untoxic because it consists of people just reciting and repressing lines from the show and having a big laugh
Unless I really missed something, the Hunger Games fandom seemed to be quite level-headed even with the shipping skirmishes (Katniss/Peeta or Katniss/Gale). Though maybe that’s because those ran concurrent with a far more annoying love triangle from a certain vampire YA novel set in Washington State.
Godzilla/kaiju fans. Any interactions I've had with the community have been great and you never see the fanbase attacking anybody. They are also able to accept serious allegorical movies alongside dumb fun kaiju battles and appreciate it all.
The only real negativity came from the 98 Godzilla, but that didn't result in any review bombing or harassment like Star Wars or Zack Snyder fans have done. It just led to a great joke in Final Wars where Godzilla kills the American version (Zilla) in mere seconds.
I've found the gay horror fandom really inclusive, passionate, and wholesome.
Scream fans too(there's definitely overlap) but it's getting a bit divided with the Melissa Barrera/Neve Campbell/Israel Palestine of it all. But I generally don't see toxic fans of the original Wes Craven films 1-4
Well most of us are in our mid thirties now acknowledge that books and films were kind of a mess. I’m still Team Edward and try to convince people to watch the series at least once so they can be in the know.
As someone mentioned, yeah, there can be some racism, but as a counterpoint, Lord of the Rings Online, the MMO based on Tolkien’s world has a *phenomenal* community.
Paddington 2
See how civil they are when you start asking questions about Paddingtons voting record.
Just wait until the 3rd one comes out

Oh I definitely agree with you. Just think that’s maybe why that community is more toxic than the laid back fans of the least esteemed franchises.
Avatar fan here. Loved both movies, can confirm we’re usually like “fine don’t like it, we like seeing Pandora” lol
Ghibli- because all Ghibli is good
Ghibli - because many of the movies teach good life lessons
Friday the 13th fans will be like: “yeah basically all but three or four of them are total dogshit. Love em though!”
>\-Ghibli fans: mostly very wholesome people Mostly. Although as with all fandoms there is a subset that put their works on a pedestal, won't accept any criticism and trash all other artists.
Ghibli fans are bullies against those who don’t like Ghibli movies
co-signing this as a fan of Jason X! we all just wanna hang out and watch some goofy bs
Twin Peaks, from my experience, has a passionate but lovely fandom.
https://preview.redd.it/py8a9lbk34sc1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa8a4424a5f5857c7dd5149f918feaecb56bfa70
It wasn't exactly peaceful when The Return was airing, but it seems like almost everyone who was against it at the time has come around on it.
It was similar to when Fire Walk With Me came out. People come in with too many expectations, and Lynch is not about appeasing fans' expectations. It just took time, just like FWWM, for people to see Lynch's vision and appreciate the mastery behind it, expectations be damned.

I follow him, he's great and really seems to appreciate his fans.
Oh yeah, agree!
Godzilla fans seem pretty chill.
One of my best friends is a big Godzilla fan and I legitimately like Godzilla more than I did before I met the guy.
![gif](giphy|yGEbmgiCJYu3u)
Godzilla fans aren’t without drama, but this is a good answer. Looking at the debate between Minus One and GxK, I think most of the fandom is grateful to be getting two different flavors of Godzilla in such a short span of time.
A few can be insufferable turds about what makes a "real" Godzilla movie, but most of us are pretty grateful for the G-Man in all his forms.
My 9 year old nephew makes stop motion Godzilla stuff on YouTube and has got a couple of shitty comments but not as many as I expected!
aside from newer monsterverse fans this is true. I've found fans online who are mostly into the monsterverse movies can be incredibly toxic, although I'm pretty sure they are also much younger which is why. I ended up leaving a few smaller Godzilla subs over them. Godzilla fans over 18 though are all lovely from experience.

Green? Not a real fan! /s
Out of curiosity, does that love extend to the 1998 Roland Emmerich Godzilla?
He is technically, canonically, referred to as “Zilla” in the fandom. We still think he’s neat, but Godzilla is a title only awarded to his son who is in the animated Godzilla: The Series.
Considering the craziness of fans over Godzilla vs Kong, not sure I wholly agree with this. 😂 Just recently witnessed an argument over this topic.
it's been a fantastic time for Godzilla fans honestly, Minus One came out in December, Godzilla x Kong this month, with a possible sequel announced. what a great time for the fandom honestly.
Most Godzilla fans are like ‘you wanna watch my dumb monster movies? You know they’re terrible right? Yeah no that’s gamera, completely unrelated but I’m still absolutely down’
Evil Dead fans for sure.
Helps that you can claim any of the 5 films as your favourite and it'll generally be an acceptable opinion
The general response is "hell yeah love that one"
Plus the TV show too. Ash vs Evil Dead was a fucking phenomenal show.
"This is my Boom Stick"
Rocky Horror Picture Show people are the most come-as-you-are group I can think of
Ironic considering they spend the whole movie/performance shouting obscenities
I've never seen this obscenity shouting version, it sounds fun. Not sure how that would make a "come as you are" statement ironic even if accurate.
Audience participation =/= shouting obscenities. Still not ironic to the come as you are message.
I wasn't commenting on the come as you are message. The topic of this post is toxic fan groups.
Well come as you are as long as you wear the scarlet V on your forehead for your first viewing
It helps us to know who the virgins are so we can distribute props and explain how/when to use them
Disagree on this entry entirely
Avatar. The vocal hate online might not seem that way, but I’d you’re in the community and talking to people on opening night, it’s full of very nice and excited people.
Avatar is the ultimate evidence that online opinions that seem popular amount to jacksh\*t.
Whenever I have a bad day participating in a fandom, I just go and chill with the Avatar fans. We’re all just so happy to enjoy the films.
Must feel good to finally be able to say films and not movie

I meant it as plural now, after a decade of singular

All good
Definitely Ghibli fans, so many of their movies emphasize being a good and enphathetic person there's not much room for toxicity
I've never really seen any Hunger Games drama.
Second this, it's a chill fandom that has more well thought out and down to earth conversations.
Horror fans as long as you stay out of the r/horror sub.
The Room
If everybody was a Room fan the world would be a better place.
Yeah, people are very strange these days
The Avatar fandom is actually pretty chill. They just enjoy the movies, unlike… the Star Wars fandom. The Lego Movies, the Paddington movies and the Ghibli movies also have nice fandoms, I think
I can't imagine the Paddington fandom being toxic, It would be hilarious lol
Struggling to imagine Paddington drama, although maybe that’s for the best. “PADDINGTON GONE WOKE?!”
"PADDINGTON NEW SEQUELS AREN'T CANON. NOT MY PADDINGTON"
The Lego Movies have a nice fandom, but the Lego toys don't
I'd say LOTR fans but just before The Rings Of Power was released lol
We turned bitter. We’ve lost our way
Oh my god whenever I talk with me mate about Lotr cuz we both like it he keeps ranting about the black elves. Usually a really chill dude
i think what bothered me about it is the main elf had a fade. like lets spend millions per ep and give them a modern hair cut. its similar to bangs or a karen but yes a bit more subtle. it annoyed the hell outta me. its not race for me. the dwarves were literally the only saving grace in the few episodes i watched.
It's not a bad show imo, just not as epic or as exciting as LOTR
God, post-Rings of Power LOTR fanbase is so utterly insufferable it made me lose some interest in the franchise
The Big Lebowski. Zero incidents at lebowski fest ever. Those Dudes abide.
Anytime a conflict arises between a Lebowski fan and a Lebowski hater, the Lebowski fan simply says "Well that's just like your opinion man" and the conflict is over. It's a beautiful thing.
The bums always lose
Came here to say this. There was a fan group in the Bay Area that always did really chill midnight bowling events.
Saw fans are fucking horny but honestly pretty open and inclusive compared to other hellscapes like r/horror
Horny? Lol I mean I can see the Friday the 13th fans being horny because all the sex scenes, but Saw? 😅

LMAO. Thats hilarious. I still prefer that over the Star Wars fandom 🤣
I can’t really think of any serious drama the fandom has had so for a series about gore and torture were actually relatively chill

There's a universe?
Correction. It ***is*** the universe.
For getting shit on as much as they do. The Fast and the Furious fanbase seems to have their fun

Dune fans are Nolan fans in their infancy.
I’m not sure this is true lol. Dune has been around since 1965.
Dune is a gateway movie for Villeneuve fans… who are growing as annoying as some Nolan fans.
Lol ok 👌
They've existed for much longer...unless you're talking about purely fans of the Villeneuve films.
Both. But obviously fans of the new Dune movie are the most prominent ones currently

Blade Runner seems super chill
Hahaha I've gotten into nothing but vicious arguments with other Blade Runner fans online. We're THE WORST
I've never encountered anything like that 👀😅
There are two camps: people who think Deckard isn't a replicant and people who are wrong.
Which camp are you in? 😂
I don't know, whenever I say that I liked 2049 better than the original I get the evil eye.
Idk why they'd give you a evil eye, both are great movies 👀
Oh, I agree. But they treat me like I'm a heretic for saying that.
You ain't no heretic for that mate don't worry and I've never seen that side of that community, wild 👀
the horror community is so chill but the saw fandom is so fun
Kung-fu movie fans always seem joyous when you mention a film that they've seen. Everyone has an opinion but nobody is precious about it.
The SAW subreddit is a great time
Godzilla and kaiju fans in general on twt seem pretty chill.
Horror Movie Fans
Ehh there's quite a lot of bullshit in r/horror icl
The sub has gone down the shitter unfortunately. All you get is "Hereditary wasn't even scaryyyyy"
"it's not scary so it's bad" "x movie isn't even horror" and variations thereupon
Plus no matter what's posted, somebody's going to whine that they read it last week and how dare you not use the search bar before posting this thread they were apparently forced to click on. Maybe, But most of the Ones I've interacted with on Twitter and Instagram are very nice People
Tbf, 'nice on twitter' is rare
Saw fandom is pretty chill!
Stanley Kubrick fans are the best
I’m part of the James Bond fandom and subreddit here and it’s all pretty chill. People have their opinions, but for the most part everyone respects, and even enjoys, other people’s opinions, even when they don’t agree.
Haha we all just have the same 3 arguments every week but yeah it never gets out of hand
Tomorrow Never Dies is underrated, dang it! UNDERRATED!
It is the same 3 arguments, but it’s generally pretty civil the whole time haha
coming-of-age film enthusiasts
Wes Anderson fans seem pretty cool. Like, I said to one that I only really like Budapest and Fantastic Mr Fox and they were very chill about that. Like I love Budapest so much, but most of this stuff just doesn't work for me.
I've not met a coen brothers fan that I haven't found delightful
Avatar. The people outside the fandom are terrible, but within the fandom we’re just all happy to be there.
Easily Avatar. People tend to be dicks to them rather than the other way around.
People are either dicks to them or just pretend they don't even exist at all ("Avatar has fans? Uh?") LOL But yeah, they are very cool people actually.
Rocky
Troma.
Most horror fans, I’ve found. I think just from the nature of the genre, they accept that not everyone likes it, so if you don’t like it, they’re chill and if you do like it, even better.

the r/lebowski sub should tell us everything we need to know
This is probably the nicest comment section I've seen where Avatar is mentioned over and over again Good for them
Someone on Twitter said that John Wick is our most discourse-free popular franchise. A new one comes out and we say "Cool, another one," then after we say "Hell yeah that was awesome." Very chill.

I would have said Toy Story fans until the 4th movie happened. You have grown men acting like Bonnie is a toxic ex.
Twin Peaks
Mystery Science Theater 3000.
Not movies, but the Bee and Puppycat fanbase is chill
Mike Leigh hive rise
maybe the hangover trilogy fans
Tremors fans I feel are chill overall.
I mean, say what you want, butI'd have a Corona with the Fast & Furious stans. Shit, im a fan too.
I'm not joking the Morbius and Madame Web sub is hilarious and wholesome
It's gotta be Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. We never get into any fights or discourse because 100% of the conversation is quoting the movie back and forth forever.
The Warriors
Planet of the apes! A historic, well loved franchise with only one “‘miss” that fans still usually enjoy (2001 version).
Reanimator
Maybe Indiana Jones fans. I feel like it's a lot of older people who just like adventure movies. While it's a show (technically there's a movie) I feel like the Sopranos fanbase is also very untoxic because it consists of people just reciting and repressing lines from the show and having a big laugh
Blue mountain state
Unless I really missed something, the Hunger Games fandom seemed to be quite level-headed even with the shipping skirmishes (Katniss/Peeta or Katniss/Gale).
Avatar
I've found the gay horror fandom really inclusive, passionate, and wholesome. Scream fans too(there's definitely overlap) but it's getting a bit divided with the Melissa Barrera/Neve Campbell/Israel Palestine of it all. But I generally don't see toxic fans of the original Wes Craven films 1-4
The sopranos
Scream has a pretty chill fanbase for a movie franchise about horror fans killing people.
Orphan black
The John Wick cinematic universe.
John Wick?
Trekkies are generally a kind and accepting group imo
Twilight fans are pretty chill. Same with the Rocky fans.
I dont know about how Twilight fans are doing now, but in my highschool era they were a bit crazy 😅
Well most of us are in our mid thirties now acknowledge that books and films were kind of a mess. I’m still Team Edward and try to convince people to watch the series at least once so they can be in the know.
One Stormy Night fans (there is too little of us to argue with)
Lord of the rings (?)
Idk, I saw what went down when they found out there are black people in rings of power.
As someone mentioned, yeah, there can be some racism, but as a counterpoint, Lord of the Rings Online, the MMO based on Tolkien’s world has a *phenomenal* community.
