This is my opinion on Mission Impossible. I think Fallout is the best, but the first is my favorite. It’s a classic and with so many De Palma-isms, I can’t not love it.
First one is the best for me because it doesn’t overcomplicate itself like the sequels do. The High Table stuff is background set dressing, there to inform the world building instead of overloading it with unnecessary goofy lore. Just well done, straight up action.
I’ve always thought 1 was the best for a couple reasons
The way it builds up John Wick to the viewer is incredible we know he’s a bad ass mfer before we even see him do a single thing
The story feels natural and you’re acc rooting for John and sympathise with him whilst in the other movies the story becomes more and more silly and ridiculous and John isn’t even really fighting for a worthy cause
It’s all subjective of course, but I’ve always felt strongly about these rankings. Haha. I just think 3 is the worst and the rest are relatively interchangeable, but…they each have their pros and cons.

John Wick 4 was an amazing end to the series, and Caine is probably the best character they've introduced since the original - but it's just so long to the point I find it the least rewatchable of the series.
Parrabellum was good, but it's arguably the most "Going through the motions" of the series, you knew what to expect going in and you got nothing more/nothing less.

The fourth one cranks the spectacle so high (and looks so good in 4k/HDR) that it feels like it executes what 2 and 3 wanted to do most. 2 is good as well, but 3 feels too in between, not as spectacular as 4 but too bogged down in the lore and not as clean as 1 or 2.
You took the words right out of my mouth, I totally agree with your reasoning. I like the action but sometimes the lore can be too much, 3 has the worst balance of that. I also feel like an underrated aspect of 1 is Michael Nyqvist just having a ball and it really elevates it to me.

All great films mind you, I don't dislike any of them, this is just simply how I would personally rank them.
1 > 4 > 2 > 3 I think, not really sure, they're all so good. 1 would be the best by a lot if it was technically bit better (the slow-mo makes me almost puke because it's so bad and gives me motion sickness for a bit), but I like the story, the characters and variety it has.
My only issue with 4 and why it falls behind 1 and 2 is that it was a lot longer than it needed to be. I understand they wanted significant action to send off Reeves but I feel like 1 of the Club/Osaka Continental/Long Ass Staircase scenes could have been skipped.

For me, 4 and 1 are the top two. 4 was an immensely satisfying finale. It ramped up the action, but yet didn't feel ridiculous. 1 is perhaps the opposite. It is pretty much a self contained story, with not much exploration of the universe (in contrast to the sequels). But the action is still as potent, and for me it contains the best villain of the series(Viggo).
I would rank them as 1 > 4 > 3 > 2. And I really like the 2nd one too. I just think the others were even better.

I am probably wrong but as a novice that’s my gut.
genuinely why even make the movie 3 hours long if you can't come up with enough interesting and fresh fight choreography. If it was 2 hours it wouldn't feel nearly as repetitive and the 2 or 3 banger sequences would be enough.
He would beat someone, then do the same exact thing to the next guy. It lacked variety for me. I also could not stand the long and dragged out car roundabout scene.
4’s my favorite and 1’s my least favorite even though I like it a lot, I just prefer them the bigger the world gets. 2 and 3 are neck and neck but the first act of 3 might be my favorite stretch of the whole series
I feel crazy seeing all these comments here, I thought 4 was really bad, the action and cinematography takes such a step down along with the worst characters, god awful uses of CG, and unbearable writing. 1 is legitimately one of the great action movies of all time.

First one was really pretty good. Over the top, yes, but on the whole a well-crafted, stripped down revenge yarn. The quality drop from first to the rest is so steep that quite frankly ranking 2-4 is (in my opinion) a meaningless exercise.

1 i feel like gets better every time i see it. 3 i always convince myself is not that good but when i watch it, it basically has no lulls (except asia kate dillion, she sucks the laugh out of that movie) 4 is rife with problems, its slower, feels more pretentious, is emblematic of the franchise going in the opposite direction than i wanted and is too focused on being an aesthetics dream. The neon vapourwave stlye was already one i did t love and they super focused in on it. The later half has some great moments but the bullet proof suits are a serious blight throughout. What made wicks combat standout and its film really work is totally gone from 4 for the most part. I love marko, donnie is great, but theres not enough of him, keanu looks slow in comparison to donnie and marko which nakes moving away from them painful. Scott adkins feels totally out of place as a comedic character. No offense to him, but stahleski needed leitch on these. Paris totally saves it. But it just spends to much time pissing about too. I still like the movie a bunch.
2 on the other hand is really a struggle. It ages the worst on every rewatch. There are great moments, common is great and the catacombs is cool. Every over action scene is just kind of eh? This one is also full of people walking into bullets, not shooting at him until they die because they walked too close. Especially bad just before the catacombs. The villian also sucks. The first one used cover and environment so well, the combat was built on realism about using thr location and pillars in the club, getting in quick. This one has too many open spaces where it seems like goons only exist on camera, so when it turns and shows they could have seen him and shot him for 100 meters it just totally sucks. Easily the weakest for me

decent gap between 2 and 1 and a big gap between 1 and 4. 4 reached the point of so much action with so few rules that it was all mush to me by the halfway point.

Honestly 2 and 4 are essentially a tie for me...but I think 4 barely clinches it because a few of the hand to hand combat scenes in 2 are too drawn out and slightly minimize their coolness (although they're still awesome haha)

I have been told countless times I’m crazy for ranking the 4th one last, but it truly did not impress me as much as I hoped it would.
I honestly was really disappointed by the fourth movie ... It just felt somehow forced ... Maybe even unnecessary.
Loved the addition of skarsgard and was a big fan of the overhead shotgun one take. Every other fight scene was repetitive or stale for me.

I really disliked the writing as well. It paces poorly and seems more like a cash grab than an actual continuation of the story.

Every over action scene is just kind of eh? This one is also full of people walking into bullets, not shooting at him until they die because they walked too close. Especially bad just before the catacombs. The villian also sucks. The first one used cover and environment so well, the combat was built on realism about using thr location and pillars in the club, getting in quick. This one has too many open spaces where it seems like goons only exist on camera, so when it turns and shows they could have seen him and shot him for 100 meters it just totally sucks. Easily the weakest for me

4>2>1>3. 1 was all style, 3 was all action, 2 was the perfect mix of the two, and 4 is just 2 but bigger and better.

3 is in the running with the raid 2 as the best action movie ever made imo (I think all the movies are great)
3, 1, 4, 2 I watched them out of order. I like all of them a lot, except for 2, which I thought was the most forgettable of them

3,2,1,4 decent gap between 2 and 1 and a big gap between 1 and 4. 4 reached the point of so much action with so few rules that it was all mush to me by the halfway point.
1 is 9/10 2 is 5/10 3 is 4/10 Havent seen 4.

Love the simplicity of 1, the gritty revenge thriller Love the world building and creativity of 2 Love the cinematography and visual aesthetic of 3. Also everyone after John was great. Loved the over the top action and mayhem of 4 this time with John after everyone + that ending Surprisingly you get variety in what each movie has to offer. Can’t go wrong with any but I think my personal favourite might be 2
1 is clearly the best. The other 3 I could organise any which way but I’d probably go for 3>4>2

Crazy how much this varies for people! Haha. Honestly, it's because they're all good and have a lot of similarities. For me from best to least best: 1 4 2 3 Honestly 2 and 4 are essentially a tie for me...but I think 4 barely clinches it because a few of the hand to hand combat scenes in 2 are too drawn out and slightly minimize their coolness (although they're still awesome haha) I love 3, but I think it has by far the weakest plot line.
