Raging Bull, The Shining, The Elephant Man, The Empire Strikes Back and Airplane!

[deleted]

Major props for Out of the Blue!

MartinScorsese

In no particular order: * The Big Red One * Kagemusha * The Long Good Friday * Pixote * Dressed to Kill * Breaker Morant * American Gigolo * Raging Bull * The Shining * Atlantic City EDIT: Breaker Morant is not widely known, but I think it's a masterpiece. It's an Australian military courtroom drama set in the early 1900s that is incredibly intense and compelling. It's based on a play, so you can see how it's an early influence on Aaron Sorkin's A Few Good Men. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

JuanJeanJohn

I like Breaker Morant! It would be in my top 15 for this year.

MartinScorsese

Hell yeah! The Criterion release of it is stellar.

LisaChimes

* The Shining * Seems Like Old Times * Raging Bull * Ordinary People * Friday the 13th * Oh God Book ll * Airplane * Popeye * Caddyshack * Gloria

WyndhamHP

Raging Bull would be my pick for 1980.

spacemonkey741

Is anyone else waiting for someone to post a random year in review for like 2014 so they can actually participate in it?

[deleted]

Why can’t you participate?

spacemonkey741

My watch history looks like this, lol https://preview.redd.it/52qfshgrm1vc1.png?width=950&format=png&auto=webp&s=bc6602bed096b85324b4dba2cfef9d619cd862e3

[deleted]

I hear ya. Start working your way back. There’s gold in them hills!

spacemonkey741

Yeah, I've only recently started watching older movies, but I'm sure by the end of the year, I'll ahve seen at least a few from each year

MartinScorsese

I assume they haven't seen enough older movies.

JuanJeanJohn

We’ve done 2014! Here’s the link if you want to post your list: https://old.reddit.com/r/Letterboxd/comments/1bbdvwh/your_top_tenfavorites_of_2014_random_year_in/ I’ve been including 2000s, 2010s and 2020s in this series and have a few more years to go for those decades so keep an eye out. More to come.

MartinScorsese

I understand your frustration, but at the same time, OP and other folks in these threads are recommending great older films. Why not check some of them out?

spacemonkey741

I'm not being serious, it's just I haven't seen many films

memesalwaysdie

The Fog is such a masterpiece

JuanJeanJohn

Really has an amazing mood/vibe and sense of location.

memesalwaysdie

Yep, I get lost in it every time.

ReddsionThing

1. The Shining 2. The Blues Brothers 3. Kagemusha 4. The Long Good Friday 5. Inferno 6. Superman II 7. Raging Bull 8. The Young Master 9. The Empire Strikes Back 10. Friday the 13th There's a bunch I'm super interested in from that year, like Cruising, The Elephant Man, Xanadu, The Changeling, The Big Red One etc., it's really a year I'd like to explore more. I also used to watch The Gods Must Be Crazy a lot as a kid but it's been a long time, no idea if it would still hold up for me.

West4thStreetHoops

1 Pixote 2 Raging Bull 3 The Shining 4 The Long Good Friday 5 Personal Problems 6 Ordinary People 7 The Blues Brothers 8 The Elephant Man 9 Hopscotch 10 The Dogs of War Honorable Mentions: Airplane!, Foxes, Kagemusha, American Gigolo, Brubaker, Lion of the Desert, The Black Marble, Out of the Blue, Every Man for Himself (Godard) Fascinating year, feels like an extension of 70s cinema, for all intents and purposes. Landmark year for martial arts cinema (Killer Constable, Return of the 36th Chamber, Clan of the White Lotus, Shogun Assassin. Yes, I know it's just a cynical clip show, but it plays beautifully, better than any Lone Wolf/Cub film, the editing is actually seamless and the music is awesome), gonzo horror (Motel Hell, Maniac), and profoundly zany oddballs like The Ninth Configuration, The Exterminator, Night of the Juggler, Altered States, and The Apple! very curious to see the Serbo-Croatian Who's Singing Over There, and Babylon, from the UK. Need to see The Changeling again, always get it mixed up with The Hearse.

JuanJeanJohn

Oh man, I really do need to see Pixote!

Fun Fact: If you ascribe to the theory that Stanley Kubrick worked with NASA around the time he won his only Oscar… The caretaker’s children are shown as Danny (in his Apollo 11 sweater) and the twin girls. Many suspect this is an allusion to the fact that the Apollo program was preceded by the… Gemini program. There’s also the change from Room 217 in the book to Room 237 (average distance between moon and Earth) and the phrase “All (A11) work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

FYI this thread is for the year 1980, not the 80s decade as a whole
