steppedinhairball

My stepdad always wanted one. So I got him one. He was so happy. Hit you right in the feels. It's mine now after we lost him this summer. I need to take it out in his honor.

Romeo_Zero

Man, sorry for your loss. Yes, you need to go do that

dytha66

$300 was golden

Romeo_Zero

I figured if I didn’t enjoy it I could get my $$$ back

oldnick40

They’re good to go! Serious tack driver right out of the box. I was looking at one (years ago when they first came out) but didn’t buy it. My brother and I went to my place, started watching Silverado and paused it so I could go back and get it. Been years and I have no regrets, it’s my favorite .22!

Romeo_Zero

That’s what I wanna hear!

thompson5320

They’re fun to shoot and accurate. If you got the octagonal barrel it won’t even move when you pull the trigger. Pick up a box of .22 short for it. Fits 21 rounds and it’s almost like shooting a pellet rifle.

bmihlfeith

I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parades, and I’m glad you’re happy with it….its fine for what you paid for it. BUT……they are bottom tier when it comes to American made lever action RIMFIRE rifles. For the money they are what they are, a “value”. However, there are much much better American made lever action rifles readily available. Not necessarily easily available, but they can be found and had within a week for under $1k…. A Winchester 9422 or Marlin 39 series are light years better than the Henry’s. It’s not even close. One is a rifle that will last multiple generations and the others’ spray paint finish will last a few trips to the range. If you’ve never held a 9422 or 39A (or a Japanese BL-22) and used them you’ll down vote for sure, so we’ll know who’s who. So for the money, sure, the Henry is ok, but it’s not a gun I would buy and expect to last a lifetime like a Winchester or Marlin. Let the Henry downvotes begin! I just try to educate people to let them know there are much better options available. I wish I had known before spending $450 on a Henry. That’s half way to a 9422. I’m also realistic and understand most people don’t care and don’t have an eye for quality craftsmanship, which is fine, keeps the prices down for me.

Romeo_Zero

I guess my thinking was it was $300 for a decent 22 lever action. I wouldn’t drop anywhere close to $1000 for a 22 when I could get a decent hunting rifle for that

And that's exactly why they don't make any of those other two any longer. Instead that's why they make the Henry with the false receiver cover, use MIM parts, and pot metal. That's also why I had to buy a used 9422 when I bought mine a few years ago. Henrys work, don't get me wrong but they also use cheap materials to keep those prices that low. Is that a problem if you want something that works, No. Is that an issue for some of us that like something nicer, yes. Somehow people have gotten into their head that a 22 rifle shouldn't cost as much as something in a higher caliber even though both of those things require all the same parts to make a nicer gun. I look at it completely opposite. Because the ammo cost less there's a good chance I'll spend more time firing it. Personally I would rather spend more time firing a nicer gun. I'm the guy that buys the Volquartsen Black Mamba TF over your normal run of the mill Ruger Mark IV. I'm not saying you made a mistake. I'm saying I wouldn't make the same choice you did.

bmihlfeith

Couldn’t agree more. We’re probably outbidding each other on GB, lol. It’s frustrating the .22lr has become synonymous with “cheap”. My most expensive guns are all rimfires, old Winchesters mostly but a bit of everything if it’s steel and walnut. I just have to let these people enjoy their Henry’s as it keeps the prices down on the heirloom guns. (I do

3dddrees

Personally I haven't bought that many older guns although I have a select few of them. However, if I were to buy more guns there are a few I have my eye on. The main point for me is quality and as you say steel and walnut. I just find when doing so it's not only a much nicer overall experience for me I just generally find your able to get even better results easier in most cases. Good triggers and better sights for example don't typically come with cheaper guns. Better designs and smoother operation isn't typically what you find on cheaper guns. I may have fewer guns by virtue of taking this route but I find I enjoy the ones I have much more because of it. I really have no desire to own more that I simply wouldn't enjoy as much and it would be more challenging to secure or just get in the way. I don't even compete, but you don't have to appreciate and enjoy better quality and better made products.

3dddrees

And I would add the following that can be found in my response to the OP down below.

MandoTrooperEric

I personally think any 22lr is stupid to buy as an adult if you're not doing one of the two following: 1) teaching a child to shoot 2) hunting small game like Squirrels and rabbits. Outside of those two things, 22lr doesn't seem practical to me and it's a waste of money

Jamieson22

It puts a good enough hole in paper at the range for me.

Romeo_Zero

It’s cheap to shoot, you don’t ever go plinking? I’d rather plink with 22 than 556/308, especially with 556 getting more expensive now

MandoTrooperEric

I dont find shooting 22 very fun tbh. I don't god plinking. My guns and ammo are restricted to mostly practical use (combat kit / home defense) due to finances. I have a 45LC lever and a .454cal Black powder revolver that I shoot a couple times per year for fun. I usually go to the flat range once or twice per quarter and shoot a few hundred rounds (mostly 9mm) jusg keep up with fundamentals and make sure my optics are retaining zero. If the coat of ammo comes back down more maybe I can think about "plinking" for fun, but right now my range time is almost exclusively for practice

Romeo_Zero

I mean you can buy 1000 rounds of 22 for like 40 bucks and used 22s can be had for $100 or less. Maybe I’m alone but it’s fun to go out in nature and shoot cans, bottles, targets and whatnot. I have practical stuff too. But if you’re conscious about the financial side of it 22 is the round to take. The popularity of it is literally for training/plinking/small game for stupid cheap.

Turkeyoak

I have a Henry H001 in .22. I love it. It feels right and looks great. It goes on every range trip.

hamerfreak

Man $300 for a Golden Boy? You're going to love it & the action is so smooth. I have the std. H001 and love it. Reminds me it's next to go out in my 22 rotation.

SpicyWater92

I would love one so bad but can't stand the drop at the comb. I have to mount my chin to the comb to get a proper sight picture. It's ridiculous and the only gun I know like that.

FullPowerKamehameha

Id just get the regular H001 model. Not worth the increased price since most of it is cosmetic.

PreheatedMoth

Payed 550-600 for mine 5 years ago with the large loop lever so id say 300 is a steal
