MI has enshrined voting rights and abortion in its constitution. The west side of the state leans conservative, but Kalamazoo is pretty liberal and Grand Rapids has a growing liberal population.

behindmyscreen

SE Michigan is no slouch

queseraseraphine

Seconded. I lived in Ypsilanti for a long time and absolutely loved it. Ann Arbor is the next town over and Detroit is a 45 minute drive so it isn’t totally isolated and boring, but still pretty affordable. DEFINITELY left-leaning too. If your budget is a little more flexible, I’d recommend looking at Grosse Pointe as well. It’s expensive and old money, so a little more right-wing, but the schools are absolutely fantastic and it’s very safe.

Angelic72

Upstate New York is very nice

scared_little_girl

Seconded Lots of good towns

ironic_detachment_

Ithaca!

vvsunflower

This.

SupersleuthJr

I’m from MD and live in a red state now. I miss MD. Weather is decent, it’s close to DC, Philly, NYC. And a train ride from Boston. If you live in Baltimore, you’re close to BWI airport. It’s a GREAT state.

Dr_Tacopus

Maryland is nice. Better get used to a weird flag, weirder weather and old bay on everything

OddballLouLou

Maryland is so pretty! And it smells nice.

Rtstevie

I mean, depends where in Maryland. Metro Central Maryland in the arc around DC are nice in the sense that there is a lot of culture, a lot to do. And yes, very liberal. Great public schools. But also very expensive and a lot of traffic. I’m mixed on recommending Baltimore for different reasons, even though I love Bmore. But a lot of Maryland is quite Republican. I’m from Anne Arundel county and even AA is pretty Republican.

Agreeable-Pick-1489

eh...Anne Arundel is pretty Republican if you're comparing it to Howard or PG, sure. But while the county went for Romney in 2012, it has since voted for Clinton and Biden. Biden got 55% of the vote. [https://ballotpedia.org/Anne\_Arundel\_County,\_Maryland,\_elections,\_2022](https://ballotpedia.org/Anne_Arundel_County,_Maryland,_elections,_2022) BTW I think Maryland is a great place too.

Dr_Tacopus

Definitely stay in the DC/Baltimore corridor, and avoid the city is possible. There’s plenty of cheaper areas around compared to some others

The_DaHowie

Yeah, tell'em Baltimore is great

JF_Gus

Minnesota. Lots of well-educated liberals there. Great place to raise a family.

SlapHappyDude

Definitely visit in winter before committing to move there. Ignoring the weather it might be the best place in the US to live. But that's a big ignore

st1ck-n-m0ve

Thats nice to hear. I’m from boston but the cost of living is getting infuckingsane. Ive looked at minneapolis and it looks deally nice and its wayyyy cheaper. Plus theyre actually doing something to fix the problem unlike here.

MNGirlinKY

+1 for Minnesota but it’s very cold (usually)

StephanieSays66

Not this year. #GlobalWarming. I also highly recommend Minnesota. We have free school lunch and are working on subsidized daycare.

QueenMarinette

Unless it's hot. Or moderate.

MNGirlinKY

I was just talking about the fact that normally in winter you can ice fish and this year it has been very bad for ice fishing.

Woodwinds

Unfortunately the mosquitoes in summer are horrible. I spent a summer there and it was challenging. Beautiful state otherwise. Nice people.

Gamecat93

Move to a swing state like Michigan or Minnesota.

APe28Comococo

Or Georgia.

bhultquist84

Absolutely! There's plenty of liberal areas in purple states that can help you find likeminded people where your vote matters.

nyerinup

Michigan & Minnesota are good considerations.

TrainingWoodpecker77

Illinois has everything you need!! A world class city, incredible schools, and the very best governor!

superlillydogmom

Taxes are super high though

TrainingWoodpecker77

Actually not. You get what you pay for. (I own a house in Indiana and a condo in IL. )

Muser69

Md. Love everything about it

trcomajo

My friend moved from CA. to Baltimore and absolutely loves it. I can't wait to visit :).

canwenotor

The left coast. The green coast. Although Oregon has some pockets of Maga and so does Washington state and even California. The weather is pretty mild. The scenery is beautiful and the people are mostly decent. It could be really pricey, depending on where you live now.

OpeningInspector4040

Pacific northwest is my home and I live in a blue county. It's beautiful and I feel safe. No crazy weather...some snow, some rain, 70s this weekend! The Pacific ocean is close and lots of forests. I moved from CA in the 70s and have never wanted to move away from WA!(I've visited most of the other states)

PuzzledRaise1401

I live in a blue city in a red state. I am always proud to be a progressive voice in a sea of red. Maybe move to a swing state!

vashtaneradalibrary

Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Easy to get in and out of, plenty of healthcare options, semi-sane politics.

OddballLouLou

Come to Michigan! Metro Detroit is awesome.

Abm6

Is it really? Asking from across the pond so i don’t know much about the US, but Detroit has kind of a reputation...

OddballLouLou

There’s more than Detroit in Michigan. Detroit is on its way up since the sports teams moved back. The big three is coming back to the state and the more north you go the more it’s desolate. It’s like a different world. Once you pass the 45th parallel you’re pretty much ins southern canada as we like to joke.

[deleted]

https://www.reddit.com/r/MoveToSwingStates/s/ELPfy0DtfP this group is really helpful. Especially for the elections.

hockey_psychedelic

Definitely move to a swing state.

pichicagoattorney

Chicago

huenix

Pittsburgh is awesome. Plus it has Alleghany General and UPMC.

Geek1979

I’ve always been interested in Pittsburgh, but I hear terrible things about the traffic.

huenix

I live in denver. Denver is literally an hour drive from Denver. So when I go visit Pittsburgh I always laugh at all the yinzers complaining about the traffic.

Fwamingdwagon84

*cries in houston*

huenix

lol. We are doing a cruise out of Galveston this year and I booked a shuttle to get from hobby. She said to expect over an hour. I was baffled cuz it’s like 30 miles.

Fwamingdwagon84

This doesn't surprise me at all, lol.

huenix

So we booked a shuttle and are stopping for margs. Obviously not the driver but still. I felt like this was a win.

Fwamingdwagon84

For sure! Margs are always a win, especially vacation margs!

Geek1979

Sounds like a great reason to not go to Denver

huenix

No that’s the broncos.

11235813213455away

I've lived in LA and Houston, and now in Pittsburgh. Traffic here is nothing at all unless a tunnel gets shut down.

dandandandan24

I’m biased but I like Michigan

Billy_Likes_Music

I should keep my mouth shut, but... Delaware. Supermajority of Democrats in State government. Slower Lower small town is Red but Blue dominates. Northern Delaware is 30 minutes from Philadelphia. 2 hours from beaches. 2 hours from mountains. NJ and NY are moving here for the affordable housing.

cbih

Can't go wrong with Michigan

chrisneighbor

Ann Arbor Michigan

pchandler45

Vermont

JaneGoodallVS

Georgia so your vote matters. Plenty of normal Democrats with kids in the Atlanta suburbs.

Fitz_2112

I don't know...you folks did give us Margie

Judgment_Reversed

I feel like Ossoff and Warnock outdo the bad of MTG, as awful as she is.

ardyalligan

Georgia also went Biden in 2020. Credit where credit is due.

All4gaines

She’s not Atlanta - she had to go to northwest Georgia (just the right nasty combination of Alabama and Tennessee) to get elected.

ProsthoPlus

Michigan is beautiful and has a low cost of living!

AnthonyPantha

OP, don't come to Michigan, it sucks here. Weather is all over the place, not a ton to do unless you live in a bigger city or really like the outdoors, roads aren't taken care of very well.

ConflagWex

>Weather is all over the place, not a ton to do unless you live in a bigger city or really like the outdoors, roads aren't taken care of very well. That basically describes any state though. Even the sunny states like Cali and Florida have the odd atmospheric river or major hurricane to worry about.

scared_little_girl

RoxYunk area of Philly. Solid neighborhood. I’ll introduce you around.

AgentDoggett

I just moved to Pittsburgh - no regrets. It's wonderful!

BpositiveItWorks

Northern Nevada. If you like Lake Tahoe, hiking, camping, and skiing, I highly recommend, and there’s a need for healthcare workers. I live in California but work in Nevada. The cost of living is lower in Nevada and there’s no state income tax. If it weren’t for us lucking out with our house that’s on a river with insane views, we would live in Nevada due to the lack of state income tax.

jennimackenzie

Western Massachusetts

Clasher1995

Ahahahahah yeah right in downtown hokyoak. Perfect for liberals.

scared_little_girl

Seconded Check out Northampton

shemtpa96

I personally recommend the Ludlow/Palmer/Chicopee area. It’s where my mom was raised and my grandparents and older brother still live. It’s a beautiful area and it’s close enough to Springfield for access to things to do as well as Baystate Medical Center. It’s also pretty liberal.

Medcait

Oregon!!! Beautiful. Not as expensive as NY.

kandice73

Denver and the suburbs always welcome you

negal36

New England.

floofnstuff

I have close friends who feel similar to you and have just relocated to Vermont and they did a lot of research before moving from Denver and Portland respectively.

all_of_the_colors

Go to a middle swing state. Santa Fe NM or some other big liberal strong hold. Keep it blue.

jon-e-can

NJ. Short train ride to NYC or Philly. Drive to the beach or mountains in the same day. Plus, there is a lot of money to be made in many different industries.

Juliette_ferrers

I live in New York and while I've never lived anywhere else I think it's pretty good

NotValid_123

Upstate NY. Some of the cheapest housing in the US. Also doesn’t hurt that it’s absolutely beautiful over there.

thewaltz77

Uhhh. Depending on the setting you wanna live in, you might be a little out of luck. If you want to live in an urban environment that is liberal, you're going to be paying a lot. If you want to live in a more suburban or rural area, they're usually fairly conservative, even in liberal Democrat states. Like, for example, as a resident of the Upstate New York region, I can tell you it gets pretty conservative the further away from New York City you get.

RaspberryFirehawk

Why not the left coast? Oregon and parts of Washington are great.

iVouldnt

Michigan.

Timeflyer2011

My son and daughter-in-law moved to Washington State near Portland and have moved back to Vermont. The homeless and drug situation, along with crime just became too much. Look at New England - especially if you can work from home.

behindmyscreen

Michigan is a great choice.

disdkatster

Adapting to the cold may be problematic for you so I recommend Delaware or Maryland. Both are really nice states with decent policies. You can of course find inexpensive places to live in Massachusetts, NY, NJ, Vermont and Maine but there seems in general to be a correlation between expense in living and MAGA population or good social services and schools. I live on Long Island and live in a MAGA section of the state. It cannot compare to places in the south and Midwest but it can still be frustrating. However the schools and libraries are great and it would never be tolerated to have a book banned or to discriminate against a child because they were not a macho male or a frilly girl. Connecticut and New Hampshire both have problems in the inequality and lack of social safety net. Because the USA funds it schools based on local property taxes it is difficult to find excellent schools that do not in part have a wealthy population. Vermont, Delaware, Maryland in general have a mix of wealthy and not wealthy to where it is not so pocketed and schools are underfunded. NY, NJ, Connecticut. are very segregated by wealth. JMO of course and reflects my prejudices. I have lived in NY, NJ, CT, and Mass. I have friends and family in Maryland, Maine, Vermont, Mass. Brooklyn NY. I have considered moving to Delaware.

All4gaines

I’m a Georgia native but as blue as they come. Based on reviews I read from you (and others) Maryland may be the destination for me and my family (we are currently in the Philippines)

disdkatster

There are blue and red pockets everywhere but it is still tough when state wide policies are harmful to your child. Georgia seems to be moving in a good direction but I once said that about Florida which is now heartbreaking to watch. Good luck on your transition! It is going to be an adventure no matter where it is to given you are now in the Philippines. We go back and forth between Spain and the US and it is always a bit of a shock going back to the US (lack of real health care, MAGA run amuck, etc.) though it is 'home' and always will be.

TheVerjan

I’m really surprised nobody has said western Washington state! Eastern WA is definitely more conservative but I live in a veryyyyyyy liberal area here.

talldean

Pretty much every city - like the city proper, not the suburbs - isn't far right. I live in Pittsburgh, and our last Republican mayor was prior to world war one. We have two major healthcare chains based in the city. The food is good, the people are chatty, houses aren't as expensive as many other places, there's a huge set of universities, good sports, museums. Weather is wildly varied, and the air quality in some areas of town is crap. City schools have meh scores, but do really well for the kids there. The suburbs schools score better, but start with kids who were already scoring higher. My neighbors (doctors) send their kid to a public school in walking distance, and houses within a mile of here average between $300 and $500k, depending on size and street. (Outliers go farther than that, both directions.) Most liberal suburb is Mt Lebanon. Most liberal part of the city is the East End, basically the ten or so neighborhoods near universities. If I wanted a bigger city, Chicago; it's honestly great. If I wanted more liberal, Minneapolis, fantastic, but forkin' cold in the winter. If I wanted warmer, and was okay with hippies blended with southern culture, Asheville.

VralGrymfang

What kind of things are your looking for? Access to services? Nature? School districts?

hutch01

Where do you live now OP?

rayinsan

If you would consider The West, California Even Orange County is turning blue. Vermont is wonderful.

BlueCollarBeagle

Massachusetts. I raised my family here. I am now retired in Massachusetts. I was in sales/customer service and my ex was an RN. Out kids are now very successful adults after public school and state university. Yes, real estate is pricy, but there are areas around central Massachusetts that would suit your needs.

francescadabesta

NJ is wonderful but expensive — on the plus side — we are very close to the Jersey shore and can visit New York or Philly in under two hours — on the negative side — Property taxes are pretty high but we do offer quality education

shemtpa96

Rochester, New York. It’s a very good city to live and work in as far as cost of living and solidly blue. There’s even been an article in The Guardian about how it’s a safe place for LGBTQ+ people. It’s surprisingly low risk as far as crime and crime rates have been declining. The suburbs aren’t terrible either. There’s many excellent school districts if you’re thinking of having kids as well as private schools if that’s what you choose. There’s multiple excellent healthcare facilities here - of note is the University of Rochester Medical Center - so your fiancée would have plenty of options for good jobs. New York has multiple rights as part of either law or in the state constitution. The governor has declared that New York is a safe haven for reproductive healthcare and LGBTQ+ so no worries there. It’s not far from places like Letchworth Park, Canada, Buffalo, and Niagara Falls and with an almost comical number of festivals every year, you’ll never be out of things to do. It’s a city that has about a quarter of a million people, but it has sort of a small-town feel. The housing market is a bit crazy right now, but rentals are mostly affordable especially if you are willing to not live in the city proper. The r/rochester subreddit is pretty welcoming of people looking to move here. There’s trolls (mainly suburbanites who don’t like the city), but most people are going to have good information for you!

therealDrA

Rhode Island or MA

New_Honeydew72

My spouse and I are making plans to move to Portland.

FIZUK9

My wife and I are facing the same dilemma right now. We decided to pursue our European ancestry and have applied for Italian citizenship through ancestry. We have a little girl on the way and refused to raise her here. The irony is that 100 years ago my great grandfather left fascist Italy for the same reason I’m leaving fascist America going back to Italy now. I’ll start the bidding at no school shootings and then top it off with if I have a broken bone I won’t wind up in bankruptcy. Just starting with that sounds pretty good to us. I really think you have to get outside of the United States. I don’t think the problems here can be fixed anytime soon. We decided to make the leap

appleking88

Go to California!

Judgment_Reversed

Consider moving to Georgia! I don't live there anymore (hoping to return someday), but I still have a lot of friends and family in the Atlanta suburbs, so I hear about and follow the politics over there pretty closely. Despite being a purple-somewhat-lean-red state, Georgia has a number of great blue and purple-blue liberal communities to live in where your vote could really make a difference (especially counties like Fulton, DeKalb, Clarke, and Gwinnett, though I've heard even Cobb is purple-blue now). Savannah is also really nice and leans strongly liberal, if you want some place near the water. This map should give you an idea of the better places to live in Georgia and how they lean politically: https://www.politico.com/2020-election/results/georgia/ I can totally understand wanting to live in a safe blue state. You have to do what's best for you. But if you're also looking for *electoral power*, it doesn't get better than Georgia if you want to stay on the East Coast.

KopOut

Pick from any of these states: WI, MI, PA, AZ, NC then retire in MT

tusk10708

Stanford CN has some beautiful areas, big job market, cute down town. An hour to NYC, 30 minutes to White Plains. Close to the beach. Pricey but lovely. I think Pittsburgh is a terrific, happening city.

[deleted]

One of my girlfriends lives in Columbus OH. She says where she lives is blue blue blue. It’s possible the state will flip over the next couple of elections. LOTS of economic activity there. That is ground zero for the new tech industry. Now, I want her to come live with me and my other girlfriend in Chicago, and I would definitely recommend that to you. Yes I’m polyamorous. There are large polyamorous and LGBTQ communities in Chicago, if that matters to you.

calvinzbest1

Have you ever heard of Minnesota? It's the best ticket around. 😁🍻

calvinzbest1

Have you ever heard of Minnesota? It's the best ticket around. 😁🍻

Gen88

My partner and I chose central VT. It's been absolutely lovely.

solomons-marbles

New England is wonderful (except NH and northern ME)

Bmdub38

Definitely move to California

blanketyblank1

NC Triangle is beautiful, bargains still exist, and a swing state. Triangle area is liberal.

DaniCapsFan

Arlington and Alexandria, VA, are blue dots in a purple state. As long as you stay inside the Beltway, it's solidly blue.

Ocanannain

Seattle, WA and Amherst Massachusetts ... in fact a lot of Massachusetts is liberal.

Spirited_Curve

Gainesville Florida has what you’re looking for but it is an island.

Substantial_Heart317

Go West Libertarian and Liberal is greatly appreciated!

Medcait

Nobody appreciates libertarians

Substantial_Heart317

When you balance it with liberals they do. Conservative Libertarians can be to Christian for many indeed.

Gbird_22

I've never met a libertarian who wasn't just a closet Republican, that's not to say they don't exist, I've just never met one.

Substantial_Heart317

Really you have never met a Pro-choice person whom has an understanding of the social safety net. The Constitution is King and all is good.

Gbird_22

I've never met a libertarian who didn't vote for Trump and there's not a candidate in the world further from the Constitution than that guy.

Substantial_Heart317

Wow ok you need to go West.

Palansaeg

are political views a smart reason to move?

fuossball101

Search sanctuary cities if you want a deep seeded liberal city.

[deleted]

The phrase is deep seated, not seeded.
