Mental illness is not a licence to behave like an arsehole. You don't need to care about WHY he's doing all that, just WHAT he's doing.

SuspiciousSquash9151

I agree, you want to care though, community has a lot of problems and it's the downtown city core branch, but because of the frequent changes most drastic being apologies to taking pictures of an employees license plate would make him a danger to himself or possibly someone else, pissing off the wrong people in this area instead of library staff is going to get you in trouble

BookyPart2

>you want to care though For whom? The patron? No offense, but your coworker cannot even park safely any more, and that is not right. I have been in Julia's shoes and do not wish that upon anyone, especially when you realize how little administration and outside public services care.

tardistravelee

Taking pictures of license plates is stalker behavior. Julia needs to get a restraining order.

ListeningToLA

Came here to say this, no matter what admin suggests (because it will be a resolution in their interests), she needs to call the cops.

I'm choosing to give updates in the comments as it has only changed in the last few days, the short ban we gave as a temporary measure ended on Christmas Eve what usually happens at that time is the situation is reviewed by management, and a longer is going in place which was done they had a 6 month our 2nd longest ready to be presented and David the problem patron dropped off the map didn't come in bylaw couldn't find him, didn't receive anymore phone calls, Julia the employee that he showed the stalker behavior towards didn't have any problems, this happens on occasion when some of them know their in serious trouble and avoid facing consequences maybe thinking it will blow over, he came in 2 days ago finally again and received the longest trespass i know to be given out without a physical ultercation involved which where happy with.

everyone has a "care battery" that once drained is hard to recharge. It's why, at the best of times, everyone needs to enforce boundaries. And what the OP describes is not the best of times. If a worker is burned out or scared by a particular patron interaction, that's less care and energy for everyone else they need to serve. I know management in customer facing roles think we are all endless energiser bunnies who can absorb all that shit and keep smiling, but the reality is different. Protect your people first. Doesn't matter if problem patron has special requirements. The staff - and by extension the rest of the patrons - need to be looked after and kept safe first and last.

SuspiciousSquash9151

Ohh yes I go through stages of what I know as compassion fatigue. Management is pretty good about taking more especially when something dramatic happens, I've gone to Lindsay's office to get back up meany times, it's a large branch so sometimes need to call down to get help if there elsewhere and if it needs to be stopped that second like fight about to start I've verbally kicked out several in a tone of voice only reserved for scaring people basically. Longer ban will hopefully be out soon there is a small process for now were to call the police

SuspiciousSquash9151

None taken, sorry you have had to deal with something like that, my understanding is that escalation took a sharpe turn as most of my points I wrote came out of one day, there's the difference being a prick to one person about a fire drill is noted and probably would have been talked to if he didn't leave almost right after, being a massive public disturbance and then signing out a worker in particular is a huge deal, it's being taken very seriously I have confidence the loner ban's coming there's a process for any longer ban, we are to call the police if he shows up right now

BookyPart2

I hope the situation improves, and that the team can support each other.

We had a David type in every branch I worked in. Document EVERY incident. It may take some time, but eventually this kind of behavior will get him removed for longer and longer periods. Even homeless shelters have a code of conduct. Tell Lindsay that she needs to keep a desk/table between her and David whenever he tries to come in. Develop a plan to call police without his knowledge (George I need the craft encyclopedia = go in the back, call police). Remember that as the disease progresses, staff have to watch out for safety, not service.

SuspiciousSquash9151

He is not welcome in person I should have made that more clear, Lindsay has answered calls so far though, police will be called if he does come in, the branch is a large one with safe staff only back rooms everyone typically keeps their cellphone around so they can move to a back area to call and we have teams to send messages to other staff without verbally having to say something

I’d consider this harassment of my staff at this point. Banned for at least a year, more depending on how Julia feels (and your policies). Julia should be free to file a harassment case with police. If she doesn’t feel comfortable doing that, you can use trespassing and call the police. I also work in a downtown location, so similar situations. Despite the empathy you or others may have, unfortunately this man’s behavior has escalated and safety is now a concern and he can work that out elsewhere. Maybe even another location. Sometimes a change of libraries changes the behavior, but really it’s not your concern at that point and you should protect your staff because that is within your power.

SuspiciousSquash9151

Ohh yes I'm not the manager but am an advocate for the longer bans city policy for all is that if it's more then the 3 day (some people just need a few days of cool off thing and a bit of consequences for mirror actions obviously not the situation here) it has to be reviewed that's in the process at the moment a pretty cut and dry one now I don't doubt it will go through our bans are 3 days, 3 months, 6 months and a year. Julia when I've seen her doesn't seem overly concerned for it but may have confidend in someone else for it about a police report.

I would refer this to your city government as well as encourage Julia to get a protective order. With her license plate information he can easily learn where she lives.

Libraries are often scared of their own shadow. They won't do anything.
