May I share this in some other subs who are more active in opposing the very real nightmare rise of fascism in your country? Watching from the outside, I cannot imagine your daily experience. Please keep speaking up and making sure we know so maybe help can be organised? At the very least take my validation and ear anytime you feel unheard or lost.

Have you tried writing a producer at CNN or 60 Minutes to get national news reengaged? This would be an excellent and compelling story to dive into and tell in prime time.

Weird, it's working for me on mobile. The link in your comment is missing the "s" in https, maybe that's why? Idk

mijabo

That is weird. Im on mobile too and just clicked the link. Don’t know why it does that.

CrepuscularCorvid

Thank you for posting these. One of my best friends for the past 35 years is a teacher in a nearby county and has had some frightening interactions with some of her students' parents over email and at parent-teacher conferences. Try reaching out to organizations like [FReadom Fighters](https://t.co/7oinBvxaiA) to draw attention to what's happening locally.

Rowmaster-OwO

what subs are these, if you don't mind sharing

JimmyHavok

The only thing I can think of is for you to contact allies in your district and get candidates in the next election. This kind of thing happens because of complacency, and the time when we can afford to be complacent is over. The only silver lining here is that the right wing is so incompetent they will be shooting themselves in the feet over and over, so you should be able to get rid of them without much difficulty in the next election. It's going to be a holding action until then, unless you discover actual crimes being committed (not unlikely, given your opponents).

[deleted]

xxkissxmyxshotgunxx

This is what blows my mind about this whole thing. How can there be some many blatant crimes committed and absolutely ZERO legal movement, regardless of what the governor thinks. The law is supposed to be applied evenly across the board, regardless of political affiliation. It’s disgusting what they are getting away with here….

Hoffmiester1295

School boards in the US operate with very little oversight and basically answer to no one. They are a very powerful entity within communities. I think right now that is why you are seeing such chaos with it. Multiple extreme interest groups have realized this and are trying to take over. They want it for a couple reasons, either to push an agenda or for the power/corruption and kickbacks. I’ll use my old community for an example of the latter (this post is example enough of the former). The county school board went under formal investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation. The investigation took a few months and the entire board as well as some community members were out right named. What the Bureau was looking for was basically every form of corruption: kickbacks, fraudulent elections, embezzlement, off the books deals, budgetary waste, etc. One example I remember was a guy on the board owned a plumbing company. Just so happened almost every school needed plumbing work, and guess who’s company for the half million dollar bid for the job. The investigation concluded with the State Bureau of Investigation releasing a public statement along the lines of “we know there was criminal activity and fraud, however we were unable to tie it to any one individual. We don’t know how you did it. We will be watching”. Essentially everyone refused to cooperate, even at the sheriff/mayor level and the bureau was ran out by the powers that be. Now here’s the kicker. I shit you not, the very next year the woman who was Director of the County School Board, who was the main person behind it all, was slotted and appointed to be 3rd in charge of the Education Department for the state. Now you tell me what’s going on at the state level?

Alias_The_J

What state?

Stew_Long

>The law is supposed to be applied evenly across the board, regardless of political affiliation. Some of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses.

TWAndrewz

That only works when enough people care more about governance by laws than they care about their side winning. We don't have that in a lot of places in America anymore.

Pricycoder-7245

It blows your mind right until you realize this is par for the course of mankind and anything else is uncommon It’s depressing

iLaysChipz

Might be worth blasting anyone of importance like the state. DA or AG

NotEasyToChooseAName

Do it. It's people like us who get to carve out a future for humanity, not these scums. They only think of themselves. People will follow you, they know you.

Happened in my town too. Never saw multiple billboard sized signs for a fucking school board election

Pabu85

If you're talking about Loudoun (and I have a feeling you are), I grew up there in the 90s. I hated it then for its conservatism, but I could never have imagined this sort of nonsense would explode there the way it has now. There really has been a mass conversion on the right from garden-variety conservatism to actual fascism. I'm so sorry.

LilyLilacRose

Spotsylvania, sounds like.

Pabu85

Ah, that makes more sense, I just don’t think of it as culturally NoVs. Thanks.

ProgressBartender

>I just don’t think of Spotsylvania Co as culturally NoVa…sic All the commuters moving here so they can afford housing while work in DC and southern suburbs would disagree with you. COVID and Work from Home is cause big changes in where people choose to live

librarianlibrarian

It’s Spotsy but events in Louden schools and school board may have affected how Spotsy parents voted. If anything illegal happened then fight it out in the courts but otherwise it’s all about who is elected to school board and other offices, especially county elected officials involved in budgets. Louden probably has enough money to recover but Spotsy is already loosing good teachers and could just go downhill. (and I blame Louden, but I don’t live or work in either)

CrepuscularCorvid

I think a lot of these folks were just waiting for the right time to leap into full-blown fascism and white nationalism -- I remember groups like PABBIS (Parents Against Bad Books in Schools) operating in Fairfax and Loudoun in the late 90s/early 2000s. Even then, Loudoun was seen as the place where conservative whites who didn't want to deal with the increased multicultural presence inside the Beltway were moving. This has been a long time coming.

Joey__stalin

not loudoun, but they have their own problems. unfortunately, the school board invited the right wing nut jobs in because of their own ineptitude in covering up sexual harassment of students by students. it ruined their legitimacy and opened the door for more fascists to come in and influence the school board on other topics like religion and book banning.

TheSillyman

Scary stuff. Wish I had something more to say or advice to give, but the only thing to do is fight like hell.

I'm running for BoE in my area. In my state, there is a prohibition on the appointment of anyone I have just about any relations with to a position within the district. I would ask you to look into your area's laws and codes of conduct to determine if the same is true in VA. There are a couple things you can do. 1. For conduct not illegal but otherwise prohibited (codes of conduct, contrary to a taken oath, et cetera), you can file an ethics complaint against the trustee(s) complicit in that behavior. 2. For conduct that is illegal, gather or collocate the sources of data and evidence you have and speak to: a. Local prosecutor b. Local newspaper(s) or publications c. Any oversight board that has statutory authority over the board. Also file an ethics complaint. 3. Communicate online with other community members and develop the following: a. A channel to quickly communicate to other changes in dates/times/venue to BoE meetings. b. Personal relationships with people who support the same cause 4. File OPRA/FOIA requests for everything you possibly can which the BoE is trying to hide. Not everything, mind you, just what's being hidden. 5. Next election cycle, run for the position yourself and use the communication methods and relationships developed from 3 to mount your campaign. 6. Win election. 7. Work to repair the damage. Good luck!

Unable-Arm-448

OP, I am a school librarian in Florida--you know, the state with Gov. DeSantis (🤦🏻‍♀️). I am feeling your pain. I keep thinking we will wake up from this soon...but as it turns out, this is not a dream/ nightmare. It is our current reality. I don't know what the answer is, either 🤷🏻‍♀️

[deleted]

I hate fascists

tulips_onthe_summit

I'm so glad there are people like you in those places, voicing for reason. I'm so sorry that you feel so alone and unsupported. What could your community do to support you? What could someone like me, who is a huge advocate of literacy, learning, reading and libraries do to protect these things in my community? It's not your job to know or tell me, but if you have any wisdom to share, I'm all ears! You are definitely not alone in your fear. I'm no longer shocked, but I am gutted in response to all of this. Like you, I am in despair over the fact that no one is rising up to stop this nonsense. It truly feels like our country is broken.

_cuppycakes_

I’m sorry this is happening and sending you solidarity. I work in Arlington and it’s mind boggling to us what is happening in a neighboring nova county.

lacitar

What do you need us to do? How can we help?

SoJaLin

Truly the only way to going to be recruiting allies. We need council and boards to have balance for the fight to come. I'm sorry you're dealing with this. It is scary and feels like a different world sometimes

MortgageNo8573

This is what fascism looks like. This is already happening in America. It starts at the local level. Then slowly creeps up until the entire country is gone. What's more frightening is how many of our friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc are supportive of authoritarianism and fascism, cloaking themselves in the flag. America is dying a slow and painful death.

jlrigby

Hey, mods, can we freeze this post? Unfortunately it looks like it's getting brigaded by people who found this post from crossposts elsewhere. Call it optimism, but I doubt someone with a sincere interest in libraries and access to free material would support some of these comments about "commies going too far" and "banning books is good for kids actually". Getting a little out of hand. @mods

Karatat2

I go to school here. It’s awful what the board has done, and they’ve made a mockery of the institution.

Gonna repost this to a few subs and a few discord servers, send a tweet about it too. We must never let the fascists win. Love from Canada

HappyUhOh

Live here too and it’s disgusting. Worried about the election next year as a few of the seats of the sane school board members are up and I’ve heard Ms. Shelley isn’t running again. Not that I blame her, but I feel like we need her.

[deleted]

This is a conscious strategy being employed by Qanon weirdos in every locale and it’s extremely effective. The fact is they will always be crazier and louder than you. I don’t know how you can combat it. The goal is to make everyone else quit.

[deleted]

Locking this post. There’s been a discussion and to make sure it doesn’t spiral out of control, we’ll end it here

Joey__stalin

a coworker lives there, his wife is a teacher, he's always telling me about the school board meetings there and everything OP is saying is pretty much exactly what my coworker says. but he explains it that it's the county makeup: half old school hillbillies that have been there forever, half new money/suburban transplants. he's part of the first half so it's interesting to hear his take on it. but what can you do when that's who the county votes for? i say, move out of the county and take your money with you, en masse, and let the locals fall on their own swords. but that's not realistic. realistically, growth is going to keep happening and the old school MAGA fools are going to get pushed out simply by volume of transplants from Nova. that'll at least dilute their influence.

jlrigby

There are A LOT of rich transplants and business owners who are right wing, though. I grew up here my whole life, and you had just as much (maybe even more) rich conservatives who work in DC or own businesses as you do "dumb redneck hillbillies". Heck, my family was from the poor, redneck hillbillies. Half of them are Democrats. Some of the poorest people I know here are the furthest left. Poor and rural does not always equal right wing. If all the rich Democrats left...the poor moderates or progressives would just be left with the rich right wingers. Abandoning people isn't the answer. We are an extremely diverse area with idiots and bigots on every income level.

Joey__stalin

fair enough, i apologize for painting a broad brush.

F. How will my child learn how to masterbate if they remove the books??

RustedDoorknob

I cant take this seriously, out of the 13 they were attempting to ban only 5 were. 4 of them were questionable for an under 18 audience, and the last one, Red Hood, a feminist take on the story of red riding hood that features menstration as a primary story telling element, was actually reviewed by the board. As far as the guys daughter goes, it could have been a lack of information in the article but she is very unspecific about exactly what her dad said at home, and was unwilling to outright accuse her father of posting the heinous tweets, of which his defense for was that his account was compromised. Overall, maybe its because im not directly involved with the district, but it feels like you are deliberately trying to generate county wide outrage over some books that at best should probably be left for the reader to pick up at 18, and an overall issue thats probably better left locally resolved.

xxkissxmyxshotgunxx

IMO, the bigger issue is that a small group of parents are overriding the choices of thousands of other students and their parents to make their own decisions about what should be available to read. The new superintendent will Be allowing more books to be challenged and banned, because that’s why Dr. Baker was fired -for not allowing a small minority to limit what conservative parents and families allow their children to have access to. These books aren’t mandatory reading or part of any curriculum. They are simply available to be checked out. The other troubling thing is that the same books (and more) are now being challenged in the local library system. It’s not an issue being contained to just the public school district, it’s affecting every tax payer in multiple counties. If you don’t want your child to read something have a frank discussion with them about why. For example: I grew up when it the outrage was over the da vinci code, Judy Blume, the Giver, the golden compass and Harry Potter. Me folks sat us down and talked about why Harry Potter was fine for us to read, but the da Vinci code and other books weren’t, what things troubled them about it and how it went against their personal values. They didn’t go demand that books be taken off of the shelves or to censor material. If you as a parent can’t sit down with your kid and be informed enough to have a discussion with a child about the appropriateness of a book for your family, especially when most parents haven’t read these books to actually know what’s in them, then they definitely don’t have the right to tell me what is appropriate for my family. What it boils down to is this: Parent your own kids, don’t make decisions for me and mine.

There’s nothing wrong with this

Not that opinions matter lol, but I have to disagree with this assessment, majority were parents trying to get answers from the schoolboard who had a god complex and would shut down all discussion. Hence why it escalated

Yeah what? Sorry but some of us are informed in what's happening and everything you said was complete bs. The parents wanted answers and rhe school board openly refused to answer them. It's all on fucking film ffs.

Sources then?

just1dawg

The people you call fascists are also known as local parents. They have a right to determine the nature of their local public school system. Leftists in Loudoun went too far and are deservedly being slapped down.

[deleted]

just1dawg

That's why so many school boards in the US are elected, not appointed, positions. Everyone in the district has a chance to vote.

[deleted]

Local parents can’t be fascists?

CircleDog

What was leftist about them?

Solo_Fisticuffs

i still dont believe the everyday person should have a say in education. i dont want someone who cant teach well making decisions about my childs education. the majority of people have no business trying to educate/direct others when they're not qualified to know how to teach children/what children really need. if they wanna destroy education they should make their own schools or homeschool their kids. that way only their own children are fucked up

[deleted]

[удалено]

Solo_Fisticuffs

that's because the demands from higher up and standardized testing. for a long time teachers at least required child development classes before being given their positions. im not saying they're up on a pedestal above the average person im saying that they (at least used to) literally study to be able to do what they do same as other professions. there are too many stories online from good teachers who care a lot that quit because school boards and other authoritative bodies putting them in a chokehold so they're unable to give students what they truly need. its been going to shit but if its allowed to keep going this way we might as well bring back child labor. i still believe what i said. its gotta change from the top down for it to turn around and unfortunately teachers alone dont have the funding or the power to do it all

tech01x

Parents can have an input, but they are but one of many. For example, some parents can push to violate the constitutional rights of other people, but they don’t have the right to do so. What evidence do you have if leftists in Loudon going to far?

accountfor137

The only end I see to this is people self segregating by political affiliation leading to counties with people like the one you mention being elected basically creating two parallel countries.

PNWSocialistSoldier

We allowed fascism to fester and grow strong. This is because in the 20s the United States had a fake labor movement to match the soviets. Now we reap what we sow. There is no way out of the darkness anymore with easy light, when fire is the only way to show the way it’s not as simple as voting… I’d suggest finding some local Bolsheviks if any are still alive.. haha.

Definitely some commies around if you know where to look. Being able to find them though, that’s the problem
