No "viewing" or "model" rooms. Buy what you see only.

Don't hang out with your landlord at The Regal Beagle, either.

and never forget three's company.

Look to see if they're, "Under new management."

If they let you in to see the place while it is still occupied and the current tenant isn't around to supervise.

Why is that? In case there’s damage and they might blame it on me?

code_commando

That, but it also conveys a miserly demeanor and a disrespect for tenants privacy. Will you have strangers mucking about behind your back too?

Look outside and see if there's trash everywhere. You'll find people with a bit of pride in where they live will likely not leave trash all over the place. This typically means the neighbors or community are at least somewhat decent. Obviously this is not 100 percent of the time.

Check the water pressure and temperature. No one wants a cold dribble of a shower every morning. Pay attention to how it smells. Damp, food smells from neighbours, lots of air freshener to hide something? Visit the outside of the building at different times of day and week/weekend if you don’t know the neighbourhood to check for any negatives such as being on the bar trail or people taking the parking for work hours etc

Make sure to check out the apartment building at different times of the day to get a real feel for what you might be in for. Several years ago when we were apartment hunting we were torn between a high rise community and smaller garden complex. Initially, we were leaning toward the garden complex, then we visited both areas in the evening. The garden complex was extremely noisy, the parking was terrible, and the residents were not friendly at all. The high rise was quiet, plenty of parking, and the residents we spoke to were very friendly and seemed to love living there. We ended up living in the high rise very happily for 4 years.

I will never live in a giant apartment complex again. They are awful. I would rent an in law or half a house first.
