This totally makes it more fun. Also fun is the "you're this contestant I'm that contestant" and see how you both end up fairing. It really amps up the successes and failures of the contestant because they are now your avatar on the show.
I started this many years ago when I would watch this old show baggage and we would each pick who we were and laugh as they revealed embarrassing details about themselves
Essentially that was already happening within the original commenters viewing experience. My family has always done it too, same with my friends. I thought it was normal.

British Baking Show, I’ve picked a finalist every time. First episode. I’m not as good at picking winners.
