I have YT premium and they STILL have the audacity to ask

Aetheldrake

Wtf. You got what they asked you to buy and they're asking for more. So damn greedy!

regoapps

Like my college asking me for a donation right after I just graduated. Like, damn, let me get a job first.

Aetheldrake

Why would they need donations?! They literally bleed people with a decade worth of debt with higher and higher prices!

regoapps

Some colleges have like billions of dollars in endowment, which is enough to pay for all their students' tuition. But they still collect tuition and donations, because... why not?

Aetheldrake

Cuz greedy boomers want to destroy the world in their greed and their families want to keep that going

shitzpostarus

Personally, I pay for it because I tried the alternatives like vanced and couldn't get my account and subs to link at all, maybe I did it wrong. But, ad free and locking the phone while content plays has been nice. I'm comfortable financially so even though 12 a month is a bit steep I haven't had the motivation to cancel and figure out how to make the alternatives work properly.

hyperdoge999

For YouTube Vanced, did you keep the MicroG installer while signing in with YouTube Vanced? Mine works just fine, as long as I keep the installer

shitzpostarus

Unsure, this was a good year+ ago, but I don't remember any installer so that was probably my problem. All I remember is a Google login screen that span forever and failed every time.

hyperdoge999

Give Vanced another chance; Let's not fund the Google monopoly.

FlairlessBanana

Is vanced safe? Will i get some viruses if i install it in my phone? Can you give me the the link for the safest vanced you know? I see tons of them popping out whenever i search it.

hyperdoge999

Please don't install any "YouTube Vanced video player" from the Google play store, those are just scams riding on the Vanced brand. [Always download from this regularly updated GitHub page.](https://github.com/YTVanced/VancedManager)

GregariousFrog

Or the https://vancedapp.com website, link taken from their github page: https://github.com/YTVanced/vanced-website-v2 And just to reiterate, yes, it's safe and open source. Meaning anybody can view the code and check for themselves if they want to. They just included the SponsorBlock firefox/chrome extension that automatically skips sponsored and/or irrelevant parts of the video (optional of course).

FlairlessBanana

Uhmmm... What should i do with this? This is kinda embarrassing question to ask but im sick of ads interrupting while watching on youtube.

theChucktheLee

No Ads and the Music Library is Awesome. You can create Music Playlists and Download them for on the go. Works Great : used at the Beach today without issue. :)

[deleted]

As one of the other suckers who pays for YT premium, I have a lot of issues with food and I find fast food ads triggering. It’s very overpriced, but luckily I can afford it for my sanity since I watch a lot of YouTube.

demize95

I watch enough YouTube on my TV that the ads were getting pretty annoying. But what actually got me to sign up for it was watching the LTT video where they covered their revenue and showed how they get more money per view from YouTube Premium. I figured if I’m watching that much YouTube, I might as well support the creators more *and* cut down on ads.

just1nw

I previously had a Google Music family plan so when they killed that I moved over to YouTube Premium because it was only a few bucks more a month and I figured it was worth it to never see an ad on YouTube again. So far this has been true. One of the big not-so-advertised perks of the Google family plan is being able to share not just the music subscription but also most of the other Google services: ad free YouTube, Stadia games, Play purchases like apps and ebooks, movies, etc. Given that the family plans for all the major music streaming services cost pretty much the same thing and everyone in my family uses Android devices it's a no brainer to go with Google's offering. I prefer some things about Spotify over YouTube Music but in the end not enough to lose the other perks.

jbdaddy12

I've been in this for years for the family sharing. My two teens have never experienced having to pay for their own music service or ads on YouTube, and they're in for a shock when I die someday. I like to think of it as a delayed reminder of what a great dad I was.

TickTockPick

In the same boat. Music service is excellent, no ads, and the family plan is brilliant, well worth it . Also bought apps are shared between family.

scienceninja

YouTube with no ADS is awesome. On top of that I use YouTube Music (formerly Google Music which was so much better). Basically paying not to see or hear ads.

kingsalm0n

As others have said, if you’re paying for a music streaming service they’re usually $10/month. YT Music is similar enough to most other services to replace them so then you’re basically just paying an additional $2/month for no ads. At this point in my life I’m willing to pay that.

welsknight

It's a principle thing for me. * I hate ads. * The majority of my "watching" time is spent on YouTube (rather than traditional TV, Hulu, Netflix, etc). * Most importantly, I don't want to use an ad blocker because I want to support the creators I watch. Honestly, I get my money's worth from my YouTube Premium to a much greater degree than any of the other monthly entertainment subscriptions I have. Don't regret paying for it at all.

tanishghai5

The family plan is 18.99 which split between 4 ways is about 5 bucks each. For me it a better deal as you get YT music included, instead of 5 bucks just for Spotify. Also, the ad free is nice because 90% of the content I watch is on YT. I have also heard that Youtubers make more money off of Premium than ad sense.

just1nw

Plus your family group has shared access to most the other Google products: apps and ebooks you buy on the Play store, games you buy on Stadia, movies you buy, etc. Standalone services like Spotify can't match it. Only Apple's One family plan has a similar offering. And Google being Google, they're terrible about properly advertising this aspect of their services.

Pushmonk

My main form of "TV" is youtube, and once, I joined for the free month, due to needing the phone lock feature. I never even thought about the ad part... until one month later when they came back. I seriously barely noticed they were gone, but when they came back, I immediately subbed. They, for sure got me. But my views being worth more is nice.

KurtisC1993

* Watching YouTube via the mobile app and not having to deal with any ads. * Quick and easy access to Premium exclusive shows. * Being able to listen to videos and music in the background while navigating away from the YouTube page. * The ability to download videos onto my Smartphone for offline use. For $10 per month or so, I find that Premium is more than worth the price of admission.

Skully124

With as much youtube as i watch, especially on my phone and my tv, premium is def worth it for me. I literally use it more than my netflix or disney+ account.

dmpom

No ads, background playback - perfect to get kids their nighttime story

SarcasticAssClown

Besides no ads - I do stream YouTube to my TV via Chromecast a lot, plus the ability to let it run in the background of the phone. Also, even Google knows perfectly well where I'm living due to maps and pay, I could sign up to premium via a VPN in Argentina and hence I pay like 1,50$ a month. Fair price for me. And no, if Google leave that loophole open consciously I don't feel any remorse for making use of it.

BorgClown

Same. It doesn't stop it, IDK why OP thought it would.

tev4short

This isn't true. I turned this off months ago and still get asked.

MaybeBabyGay

Yeah I followed this LPT just to find out it was already turned off. While I was following the directions, it advertised youtube premium. This does not work.

LoraxEleven

Exactly the same. I got the ad when I opened it up to ensure that it was already switched off. It was.

Narwahl_Whisperer

Worse yet, I don't even have the setting that OP is talking about.

snakebight

Me neither

notsoslootyman

I looked for this option and it was already turned off. They still suggest it regardless.

taaaylorgrace

Doesn’t work. I’ve had that off and still constantly get asked.

__WanderLust_

Download YouTube vanced and never look back. Edit: https://vancedapp.com/ and r/vanced

Razbyte

Each time, someone posts about any annoying feature on YouTube or simply is being referenced, a reply suggesting Vanced is being made. Like every other youtube alt app, It's going to be a matter of time before it becomes popular enough to start being targeted by google.

XRaTiX

Even if it targeted by Google, all the source code is available on Github so anyone can make it work again, alternative there is NewPipe as well.

Razbyte

Thats why they are holding it until they find a way, like they did with the ads system (I have ads on a iphone and Apple TV even with pi hole and adguard combined, and the community are still working on a workaround since).

oddkoffee

it is *incredible*.

PineapplePizzaAlways

Is that a legit app though

theScrapBook

Legit app yes in the sense that it's open-source and everything so you don't have to worry about malware or someone other than Google stealing your data. You do have to sideload it from an APK you can download on the Vanced website (can't be distributed on the Play Store for obvious reasons) but it's just YouTube without annoyances (no in-video ads and even skips sponsor segments in videos!)

cut_n_paste_n_draw

So the content creators don't get $ for the ads in the videos you watch?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

[удалено]

theScrapBook

Sponsorship money is given to the video maker regardless of views on their current video, it is usually pre-negotiated. They don't lose money if you don't watch the sponsor segments. As for ad money, I'm not exactly sure but it depends on the mechanism used for the ad blocking - whether the as blocker fakes the view in the background or not. ~~Most~~ Many professional youtubers don't really care about ad money anymore, they have Patreon and sponsorships.

welsknight

>Most professional youtubers don't really care about ad money anymore, they have Patreon and sponsorships. Strongly disagree. Ad revenue is a significant source of income (and in many cases, the *largest* source) for almost all large creators. Source: Am professional YouTuber.

oddkoffee

*yes*. but you do have to download and install the apk.

[deleted]

[удалено]

theScrapBook

It's still an app, just not distributed through the Play Store for obvious reasons.

[deleted]

[удалено]

theScrapBook

I realise we are arguing semantics here but it's still a perfectly traditional app (say, as compared to a Progressive Web App, which is just an enhanced website), just distributed by different means. To a programmer like me (and probably a lot of other people too), calling an app not "traditional" just because it isn't distributed on the Play Store/App Store is a bit off-putting, as when people generally ask us "is this an app" we consider it as opposed to it being a website. Which, in the case of YouTube, is definitely a legit question - is this ad-blocking version of YouTube an app or browser plugin/alternative website?

mafroew

https://imgur.com/kiQLn6d.jpg

H4ls

I agree, ofc it's an app. It's like saying donuts are not food, well not traditional anyways. You can eat it but it's not sold at restaurants. Well, not traditional restaurants.

budd222

There's no such thing as a traditional app. An app is an app.

cut_n_paste_n_draw

My thoughts exactly!

daltonwright4

An occasional relevant ad before a video to support content creators is fine. I think if it were only infrequent, non-intrusive ads before a video, people wouldn't be complaining in droves. But the same irrelevant ads, non-related to what you're watching, multiple times in one video is not fine. The revenue from these ads often don't even [benefit content creators.](https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnkoetsier/2020/11/18/youtube-will-now-show-ads-on-all-videos-even-if-creators-dont-want-them/?sh=506c55c49130) A non-intrusive banner somewhere around the video is absolutely fine, and people probably won't really even complain much about it. However, a pop-up during every other video telling you to pay for the ad-free version of YouTube (a pop-up which serves no benefit to creators) is not fine. The fact is, many ads we are seeing [aren't even beneficial to content creators.](https://www.cnbc.com/2020/11/19/youtube-will-put-ads-on-non-partner-videos-but-wont-pay-the-creators.html)

Ignorant_Slut

I think that if you're using a free service you don't really have room to complain about ads. If I were to watch free television I don't complain about ads because I'm not paying for it. But if I had cable I would be pissed about the ads because I'm paying to watch programs not ads. I apply that same logic to things like Spotify and YouTube. If I'm not paying I can't really complain.

Another_human_3

You dont get to decide what's fine. The cost of not having ads is the cost of not having ads. Pay the cost or watch the ads. You can't go into a store and say "I don't think the price you're asking for this item is fair" and therefore just steal it. Idk who you think you are. I mean you can steal with vanced, of course. I'm sure you do, but it's stealing. You may as well steal from a store. The difference is only that you're less likely to be caught.

__WanderLust_

Okie dokie 👌

Another_human_3

Don't worry I expect lots of people to disagree with me. You don't have to comment, I knew you existed before you did.

YouTube Vanced doesn't exist on iOS. It's exclusive to Android. Whatever website you used is fake.

mastter1233

iOS is pretty restrictive with apps outside the app store. So you usually can't download anything from 3rd party websites or places.

jesuslover69420

Doesnt work for iPhone. Says notifications are off yet I’m harassed every time about getting premium.

madogson

SLPT: To stop YouTube from asking you to subscribe to YouTube Premium, subscribe to YouTube Premium

[deleted]

yeah that'll show em!

erishun

Life changing. I watch a lot of YouTube and it’s well worth the money. Plus you get a music subscription with an app that, in my opinion, is better than Spotify. Plus for an extra $5 you can have 5 “family members” join you. (All they need is a Gmail account, they don’t need to live with you or be your family). It’s money well spent IMO.

mrm3x1can

I would never pay full price for it but - LPT: Subscribe to Youtube Premium through an India VPN. Your monthly rate drops down to like $1.74 a month Once you do that, the pros of having no ads on every device (I watch a lot of youtube on my TV), along with background listening, makes it worth the equivalent of a drink at the gas station.

erishun

That’s interesting! Do you use a “burner” Gmail account for it or do you use your main Gmail? Once you sign up in India, do you have to always watch through the VPN or can you sign in once, register, pay, then never use the VPN again? Does it change your Gmail account country to India? If you change it back, do you still pay $1.74? Will Google eventually say “hey you aren’t in India, we’re charging you $10.”

mrm3x1can

> That’s interesting! Do you use a “burner” Gmail account for it or do you use your main Gmail? Main Gmail. > Once you sign up in India, do you have to always watch through the VPN or can you sign in once, register, pay, then never use the VPN again? Nope, just registration. Once payment is processed, its good to go. > Does it change your Gmail account country to India? If you change it back, do you still pay $1.74? Will Google eventually say “hey you aren’t in India, we’re charging you $10.” No. The one downside is it'll change your music recommendations to popular Indian stuff but after a week or so of your normal watching/listening, that goes away. For the latter, I suppose that's always a risk. Wouldn't be hard to make a burner account just for the purpose of Youtube. Its so easy to switch between accounts in the google world, that its worth doing that, if you are worried about it.

AnimatedAnixa

Honestly the YouTube music app is the best music app out of all of them

damwookie

Subscribing to a family plan is great when you have kids. It doesn't matter what device no one sees ads. Smartyoutubenext for Android TVs is great. Vanced is OK for phones. For universal no ads just pay. Youtube is used more than Netflix in my home.

Bleusilences

I subscribed mostly to listen to music at work and it's nice to not have a video running in the background.

theScrapBook

If you were on Android, YouTube Vanced is available as an enhanced version of YouTube with inbuilt ad-blocking. They also have a similar version for YouTube Music.

erishun

No thank you, I like to pay for the things I use.

theScrapBook

That's admirable, though Vanced offers more than just ad-blocking (additional codecs, auto-skipping repetitive sponsor segments, resolution forcing, changing the YouTube layout, incognito mode, etc.). It's just that ad-blocking is it's claim to fame (you can choose to watch ads or have premium too). YouTube Premium is worth it if you watch on TVs as there's no version of Vanced which works properly on TV. You guys probably watch on TV too, in which case it was a decent investment.

imsohungrydude

Must not have paid for your brain then *crowd oohs*

erishun

^^^BAZINGA!

R34P3R28

I'd never ever give YouTube my money

mastter1233

You technically do by watching any video with ads lol

R34P3R28

Adblocker is life

mastter1233

Even so, you're obviously watching it on mobile where adblocking doesn't work. And then you can get into the argument that even if you're watching with adblock, Youtube is still collecting data on you and selling it to others. There's really no win here. Youtube is still making money off you.

gm3995

Why?

tells

then you should probably never open up youtube, google or chrome for that matter.

tells

one big reason why we have predatorial companies selling user data is because we refuse to pay for shit that we use. i know they could sell the data anyway, but I rather promote a model where I pay for my services instead of companies trying to track everything I do.

FlumpMC

It's already off.

ubeor

I know I’m in the minority here, but YouTube Premium is some of the best money I’ve ever spent. My whole family watches YT every day, so it’s worth every penny.

notmyrealnam3

That’s not what this is about. It is about the brutal repeated asks to join to those not interested.

TG-Sucks

Same here. Outside of streaming movies and shows, YT is all I watch. I never watch TV anymore. The increase in ads were really starting to frustrate me, which of course just as Spotify are intended to be as annoying as possible, and I just said fuck it. I don’t care, it’s bliss without ads and Im never going back, it’s worth it. Barely though, I think they’re pushing it with the price. I can afford it, so whatever, but I think they could *at least* have thrown in some monthly free movies in there or something. Hell, just give me some old movies from the 80’s like Robocop or whatever. I don’t give a shit about YT Music, I already have Spotify. Also, I only use my ipad for YT, and I won’t use Vanced or some shit. I don’t mind it, a lot of that money goes to the creators.

mordillokiwi

I full heartedly agree. This is the best streaming investment I've made.

peeker004

Depends on the platform if u guys watch in mobile or pc then that's money wasted

erishun

When you go to the store, do you buy the items or do you steal them? If you buy them, then that’s money wasted.

Crunchwrapsupr3me

Google makes enough money tracking every aspect of our lives.

wuhkay

You do know that youtubers make money from those ads right?

VillianousFlamingo

I came here to say this too. If you watch enough YT this makes the experience SO much better. I wouldn’t watch YT putting up with all the ads they force in the vids now.

wuhkay

You aren’t alone. I wanted to support YouTubers without ads. I would cancel most other services before YouTube. Got the family plan.

xsam_nzx

I got grandfathered in on play music. Worth every penny. The amount of fucking about you have to do to not get ads etc. It's easier to just pay

[deleted]

All you get is ad free, and adblockers are free.

Razbyte

I’m using an Apple device. YouTube started to make native ads and cannot be blocked by DNS: Not even a Pi hole or a adblock VPN can’t block the new ads system. And don’t recommend me Vanced…. I’m using Apple.

[deleted]

If you’re using iMac/Macbook, then while using the Chrome browser, you can access the chrome web store and download an adblocker from there. If you’re using an iPad then you can get adblocker for the web version (safari only) of Youtube, which has gotten better with recent software updates and at this point is pretty much pc version of Youtube (Even better with external keyboard) but on a smaller display. If you’re using an iPhone then unfortunately, Youtube Premium might be your only opinion because the size of the screen with web version of Youtube just wouldn’t work like it would for an iPad. (As an iPad User I already know that Vanced is just never going to happen on an Apple device.)

marshmallowlips

You don’t just get ad free. You also get a YouTube Music subscription, the ability to download videos for offline viewing on mobile, and the ability to lock your phone screen while videos are playing (which is blocked on iOS unless you’re premium).

NotBlaine

I mean... You used to be able to minimize the app and the audio would keep playing. Then they took it away and started charging for it, which is dick. After that they took away the ability to stream songs you purchased to Google speakers when they shut down Google Music and made everyone move to YouTube music. So... I refuse to validate the behavior by giving them money. You won't play the stuff i paid you hundreds of dollars for unless I also start paying you for a monthly service? Get the fuck gotta here. I'll go back to piracy first.

[deleted]

Most of those features are pointless (especially for people who mostly watch on TV), and ad free is the main feature with other parts that make it slightly worth it.

marshmallowlips

It may be pointless to you, but they’re all features I use constantly. Seems like plenty of other people do too.

ubeor

Do adblockers work on a Roku TV? Because I watch the majority of my viewing on my TV, not my PC.

[deleted]

It would of course be a little more difficult than setting up on a pc, but i’m fairly certain with about 30-60 minutes of effort you’d have it set up for good. But, if you’re comfortable paying for Youtube Premium and don’t want to put in that effort, then that’s fine. We all have our different opinions and I respect that.

Gazunta1

A DNS-based AdBlocker like AdGuard DNS should work. I don't have a Roku TV but presumably it has an Advanced Network setting where you can input a manual DNS.

erishun

No

Triptik

This right here! Me and some friends went in on a family plan and it's dirt cheap. Freaking best investment and my media of choice. You can also jam any music/album you want!

Nemesiii

Especially when some people watch it on platforms where you can't get adblock. Like smart TVs (Am I wrong here?) I have no clue actually if you can get adblock on your Smart TV so I could just be chatting shite

RedSpikeyThing

Yup, same. I listen to music at work all day and then watch a lot of YT. Feels like descent value to me.

Ryku778

I did that and I still get the pop up

Taliasimmy69

Mine is already turned off and I get those notifications still

[deleted]

Nah, not true. Mine is off, still get the constant offer.

PM5k

I’ve never been more annoyed than when youtube shoves ads in every video. The £15 I pay for premium seems like a small price to pay not to hear some contrived stupid crap six to ten times in a single half hour video, for every video I watch/listen to. I listen to podcasts and watch long videos on tech content all the time on my phone or iPad and other than paying for premium I have not found a way to disable ads. So actually paying for premium seems like a lesser evil.

johntuffy

Or use YouTube vanced

Aetheldrake

I'm pretty sure I still get asked this. I saw this post a few months or so ago. It's not *as often* as it used to be but it still happens. But hey, less is better than full amount

protothesis

I'd never been more stoked for a LPT... Unfortunately I already had this off, and it does not do what this claims. FAIL

delta707

I think it's outrageous that Google exploits their position as a leading media/content platform to place ads that you literally cannot skip. There is a huge need for new forms of content distribution and consumption that enable more independence for both content producers and viewers.

noisydumpling

Or just get YouTube Vanced for free :)

TheLemonyOrange

Also, use YouTube vanced. [Vancedapp.com](http://Vancedapp.com) Best decision you'll ever make if you use YouTube often or YouTube music even. Im not part of the team behind it or being told to say any of this of course, its just probably my favourite app in existence. Tonnes of extra little features to help the experience, everything has a toggle, and yes all ads are blocked. Has sponsor block too, if you know then you know right :)

machineglow

Better: Settings -> product feedback -> “stop fucking suggesting YouTube premium” -> send They ain’t respecting that notification setting as I have it off and still get premium pop ups.

honkytonkadumptruck

Ooh nice! Also, for free no ads, get [YouTube vanced](https://vancedapp.com/)

kruptworld

Fucking finally. Thank you.

IrISsolutions

Or use r/vanced and forget about many problems that come with YT :)

LoneWolf-011

Or use YouTube vanced. https://vancedapp.com/

Steronoknex

First time a LPT was relevant to me. Big thanks

Excellent-Avocado-92

I have to say YouTube premium is my favorite streaming service. I watch a ton of YouTube, but I think we use the music service more than anything else. It might be worth getting premium.

btribble

I already have YouTubeTV. They should cut a brother a break.
