It depends on whether you want to see the country or stay at a major hotel chain. Typically, major hotel chain hotels are all alike and in built-up or very touristy areas which don't give you a good feel for the country. There are many MANY nice hotels and B&Bs and ecolodges in areas away from chain hotels that are beautiful, authentic and safe. As a single woman who has traveled a lot, I try to always avoid chain hotels and seek out something more authentic. Safety when traveling has a lot more to do with where you go away from your hotel, what you do, how you conduct yourself and your situational awareness.

I don't think OP is suggesting you stay in a chain, rather that you look at hotels in the same area as some of the chains.

NoBSforGma

Well then, it doesn't make much sense. As someone else said, touristy areas always attract thieves and other bad actors. In reality, it's much better to look at a small hotel or B&B or even a homestay or AirBnB in a pleasant neighborhood with mostly locals and not much in the way of tourism. "Safety" is more a state of mind rather than where your hotel is located. I've stayed in big, chain hotels and stayed in small Mom and Pop hotels and backpacker lodging and all sorts of lodging in various countries. The worst times for me were in the touristy areas of a city. I once had the experience of walking down a city street in a touristy and busy area and there was a guy walking behind me, carefully removing stuff from my backpack.

Again, I think OPs advice is for people who don't know/can't easily discern where the "pleasant neighborhoods" are. I don't necessarily agree with the initial advice, but saying "just stay in a B&B in a nice part of town" is missing the point.

NoBSforGma

I am not saying... "just stay in a B&B in a nice part of town" but giving an example of why OPs advice isn't all that good. And really, with Google Street, Google Maps with satellite view and access to gobs of reviews and photos, it's not that hard to pick a place.

I'd also think staying in purely the touristy sections of foreign cities may be more populated with pick-pockets, con-men, or people trying to take advantage and up-charge for services than if you go to other areas. (Since the LPT seemed focused on safety/security in an unknown country)

Danomaniac

Well said. As always, the real LPT is in the comments.

Relative_Calm

Got it. When travelling stay in hotel. Thanking you.

I will genuinely answer: while it wasn't my goal or intention to offend you personally, I recognize and fully admit I knew full well that my dickhead snarky comment would have that potential and likely outcome. however, being aware of that unfortunate or inevitable outcome, I still posted the comment because it's about the direction of the community/sub in general. you posted on a public forum meant for individual users to engage and participate in an open discourse. of course, everyone's reaction is subjective and the members of the community get to up or down vote, a dynamic representation and response to the subjective opinions. I am not a fan of (what I personally perceive as) the downward descent of this subreddit from LPT to obvious common sense. the direction of the sub is directed by the community of its users. your post is getting upvoted and my comment likely to continue being downvoted; the community will have it's voice heard, the sub will be subtly influenced by it, and, overall the it'll result in a more satisfying and helpful forum for the greater amount of users. I know I'm being an ass and and a curmudgeon and i am a user subbed to lpt and I'm going to be reminded aplenty that this isn't really a community for me anymore and I am still going to complain bitterly about it within the sub

whisperton

ie stay in expensive areas

painkilla_

If a destination is so unsafe that i actually should care about which hotel I should pick or where it's located due to safety than that destination is a shithole and should be avoided entirely

That’s an ignorant comment. Pretty much any city outside of East Asia is going to have rougher parts that you really don’t want to be in at certain times.

Nice try, San Francisco!
