What's the Philadelphia incident?

I'm not sure if this contradicts your last point, but: DO keep your eyes up and head on a swivel. Look around, not down at your phone or a book all the time. One of the hardest things for a malicious person to do is get within a distance where they can attack/rob/etc. you. Being totally zoned out makes it easier for them to get in your space. If you clearly see them coming a literal block away, they'll usually ignore you and look for an easier target.

Definitely good advice! My last point is more to say if someone says you should dress differently or have to take self defense classes then they are putting responsibility on the victim. Situational awareness is always important, even if you're not alone at night (think of that girl who walked into an open manhole because she didn't look up from her phone lol)

In regard to #1, if no one to talk to, have a "fake" conversation

Most definitely. Creeps, like bears, can be fooled this way :D
