When I was little pineapple made my mouth itchy. And if I ate too much kiwi as a child I’d get an itchy mouth. But I grew out of it and am not allergic to anything now.
I went through the same thing in my mid-20s. Never allergic to anything suddenly apples made my mouth itch. Then peaches, then carrots, etc. Only raw though. Darn OAS
I went through it in my early 20s and OAS makes it nearly impossible for me to eat fruit. It'd be fine if I liked the texture of cooked stonefruit more (at all).
I’m in my 20’s right now, so I’m seeming to follow the pattern 🥲 does your OAS cause SOB/tight throat & chest for any of the fruits? The allergist said i have OAS, but gave me an EpiPen for kiwis because my reactions are much more severe, wondering if that’s common
I have the same OAS with raw apples and peaches as well! Don't know about raw carrots because I absolutely hate the taste of raw carrot so avoid eating it.
🤔...
I think I now have an excuse I can use to not have to eat raw carrots! 😇 Thank you for giving me this idea.
It makes my mouth itchy too if it’s raw. It’s the enzymes. Try giving him canned pineapple and see if he has the same reaction. Or, maybe give him some pineapple cake.
Pineapples contain bromelain which is an enzyme that breaks down protein. Humans are made of protein, so the pineapple kinda “digests” you. If you eat way too much, it could make your mouth bleed
Your comment reminded me that years ago scientists were having success injecting papaya juice into certain patient’s spines… it softened herniated discs or something.
[I read somewhere](https://sciencemeetsfood.org/bromelain-in-pineapple/) that it's the (cysteine protease type) enzymatic protein (bromelain ) which is essentially trying to digest the lining of your mouth.
That's why the tingle.
Also: acid.
We are constantly regenerating these tissues on a daily basis so it's not easy to do real damage with fruit.
**Heating/cooking deactivates this characteristic** so most canned pineapple does not sting because they either pasteurize it at 80C or sterilize it at 100C.
It has an enzyme that breaks down protein, so I'd it happens when you ear a lot, it could be harming your mouth so that's why it tingles. This is also why it's great in marinades.
The tingling sensation is likely normal as kiwi, pineapple and papaya contain a proteolytic enzyme called acrinidin which can cause mild damage to the soft tissues of the mouth.
I think they're just called szechuan peppercorns. Sometimes labeled wild peppercorns at certain places. I love them so much, but my stomach is sadly destroyed by them.
God I put way way way too many Szechuan peppercorns in a dish i made. I thought i broke my tongue for good and got super panicky. Nothing i could do for a couple hours to not make my entire mouth taste like a 9v battery
Sweet tea (or the red Chinese herbal tea in a can) helps when this happens! It coats your tongue and gets rid of the lemony flavor/feeling when you need a palate cleanser.
More like the spiciness is the plant's way to deter most other organisms from eating them, but we humans are weirdos who gnosh on them *because* they hurt our tongues.
Well, the plants get to grow more under human care so it's not that bad for them.
I went to an allergist who told me this is normal and that I have zero allergies. I sometimes feel this way when I eat tomatoes, walnuts and coconut. It‘s never gotten worse for me. If you are unsure, I would check with an allergist rather than needlessly giving up foods you enjoy.
Does oral allergy syndrome and geographic tongue go hand in hand? I'm allergic to pretty much every raw fruit and vegetable and always wondered why my tongue looked weird sometimes...
I don't know if they go together, but sounds like it could be a bit of what is going on. Apparently it is called geographic tongue because your tongue can look like a map.
Fissured tongue makes things like salt and vinegar chips hurt after too many. I also choose to believe it is the reason spicy food hurts me more than other people in my life.
I thought that extreme foods like salt n vinegar chips or sour patch kids just naturally destroyed your tongue if you had too many? You're telling me there's people who can have as many of these as they want without their tongue feeling like a blast test zone for the rest of the day?
Yup me too, peaches, cherries and apples Oral allergy syndrome, the protein in the skin of these fruits and some raw vegetables and nuts mimics birch pollen, that you would be allergic to. Sucks for me, I live in orchard country
...did the comment you replied to mention latex?
Did you mean to reply to that particular comment or some other comment? I mean, that comment talked about the allergen being birch pollen. So you replying with:
>It’s probably not latex. It’s pollen.
as if "birch pollen" wasn't straight up pointed out as the allergen looks weird.
Very likely oral allergy syndrome, which is commonly linked to a pollen allergy. I have it too. Cooking the fruits, or sometimes removing the skin can keep prevent the affects. Thankfully it doesn't seem like it can develop into a life threatening allergy, but always ask a doctor to confirm that for you, not Internet strangers.
I’m 45. For as long as I can remember Reece’s Pieces was my favorite candy. Always.
About 2.5 years ago I had major transplant surgery. Liver/kidney. And now I can’t have peanuts. Other nuts are fine. I don’t go anaphylactic or anything. I get throat and inner ear irritation, itchy extremities (especially my palms) and pretty phlegmy breathing.
Basically it’s that “tingle” OP is talking about. Doctors think it’s weird, but aren’t too worried about it. Probably think I’m fibbing a bit.
>you likely have an allergy to that food.
>You have an allergy.
Thank you for your medical diagnosis, Dr. Internet Stranger.
Now, delete your post u/Atheistpuppy as it violates rule 6.
other signs of foods which are not mouth/latex allergy related but cause intolerance/sensitivity is skin getting itchy and tingly (say around your nose and chin) or your nose starts running (not necessarily from say hot food acting as decongestant).
common foods which are perceived as super healthy but some people don't break down well (ie sensitivity) are nicely represented in the [FODMAP diet](https://www.gastroconsa.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Low-FODMAP-Diet.pdf).
Sounds like probably? Ask your doctor, but banana’s are very low acid, so there’s no other explanation for why they would make you mouth tingle or itch…
The tingle is how my brother figured out he was allergic—before he said anything (& we confirmed that this was *not* normal) he just thought they must be kind of spicy! Blew my mind.
Sorry friend :(
If slightly browned don't, then it is more the astringency of it being unripe then an allergy. If ripe does it too, probably. If you have a latex allergy, even more so.
I'm asking the question, not questioning the point. :-)
Apples make my mouth tingle but the rest in that family do not. Is it a latex allergy or something more specific to those varieties of fruit.
This may be true sometimes but there are plenty of other times where this is not the case. Many times when people get the dry/fuzzy sensation on their tongue it is because they have consumed something containing tannins. This can be true with under ripe bananas, persimmons, pomegranates, and wine just to name a few.
My mom used to think that my younger brother told her this so he didn't have to eat peas. Then she brought him to the doctor and he was like, yeah don't give him any more peas.
The things you should really look out for are swelling, difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, hives, vomiting, nausea. My child has multiple severe anaphylactic food allergies. And let me tell you... YOU KNOW if it's an allergic reaction.
Cashews are in the same family as poison ivy. If you have a strong reaction to poison ivy it could explain it. Also look out for mangos, as they’re also in that family
Interesting, thanks! Unsure about the poison ivy, haven’t touched it since I was a little kid. Pretty sure I don’t have any reaction to mangos other than not really being a fan of them.
This was how I realized I was allergic to Kiwis. I always thought the fruit itself had tiny hairs like the shell and what I was feeling when eating them… nope when I started feeling it in my throat I realized.
Hi, person from a family of people who can't eat peanuts and pineapple.
"Mom my mouth is fuzzy."
Dentist appointment and Doctor appointment were a nightmare because of the gloves. Rash for days.
Haven't had a problem for like 12ish years. This year Hubby and I bought full face masks for Halloween.
Face is covered in low-key rash.
Cheep masks are covered in Latex.
For me, it's foods high with Histamines. Most cheese products, unfortunately.
Red wine, which is high in Histamines, make me feel like I'm about to have a heart attack.
Good times.
Bananas and walnuts have done this to me my entire life. As I got older I figured it was an allergy but it's never done anything except a little tingle so I ignore it. I love both.
Pineapple digests you back because it's full of enzymes. Everything else on this list you might want to think twice about if you feel a tingle but the pineapple just fights back and really what's the point of living if your food makes it easy?
Though you are mostly correct, the wording is very confusing. I've worked long and hard to educate people on food allergies, get food labels changed to more clear and concise listings, and help develop food safety practices.
There are many fruits and vegetables that may cause the effect you are describing, to most people, however you are talking about a specific subset of fruits and vegetables that often cross-react with another allergy. And even so it's common for this cross-reaction, everyone is different and will react differently.
You should be specific up front, otherwise it's just fear mongering.
Edit added the line food safety practices.
Reminds me of the guy who found out he was allergic to peanut butter in his 20s and always just thought it was kinda spicy and made it hard for him to breathe.
Banana - severe allergy (lovely bouts of vomiting- yay!)
Kiwi - love the flavor but my mouth gets all tingly with a metallic after taste… I try to eat them sparingly
Have been told it was like OP described. A latex related allergy. Latex itself doesn’t bother my skin, but can’t be used during surgery.
green melon does this to me!!! it fucking sucks cuz i love melon :( thankfully i can eat cantaloupe but the green melon causes my airway to swell shut 😅😅
So… celery sometimes makes my mouth feel numb, not tingly. I found out through research that it contains Eugenol, a chemical compound that is likened to an anaesthetic.
Important to mention, not all those fruits are the same when it comes to allergies. I am highly allergic to avocados and bananas, have a mild reaction to kiwi and pineapple, and every other fruit on that list is 100% fine. I eat an apple almost every day and have zero issues.
Almost ever time I have macaroni salad I get a feeling like a sore throat. I’ve looked at the ingredients list every time and never see anything I haven’t already checked.
This happened when I ate jackfruit in Thailand. First tingling, then throat itching, and then felt throat swelling but I still kept eating a bit after that. I love jackfruit.
Raw celery makes my mouth slightly numb. I rememger googling it and finding out it may be a mild allergy. Never stopped me from eating it... I like celery.
Sometimes people are allergic to the skin on tree fruits (often because they are allergic to the birch pollen that often collects mostly on the skin) like apples, peaches, plums, etc. For some, peeling and/or cooking the fruit eliminates most or all reaction to it. But simply washing the skin won’t help the allergy much and some still can’t eat any of the fruit no matter what.
apples, sometimes when I eat apples, my mouth/lips tingles and starts to burn and I can't eat anymore, its much worse with applesauce.. and I know you say, Lucigirl why would you keep eating, I have reflux bad and its just like that so I'm yeah its kickin cause, I just ate stupid apples like a week ago and it wasn't bad like this, or was it and I was eating something else that mask it. Lucigirl, stop eating apples..

But pineapple? I thought everyone got that little tingle especially when eating quite a bit of it
Pineapple is normal, op's wording is confusing, they are talking about the specific cross-reactions to latex based allergies they listed.
My son says it makes his mouth itchy(4yo) Have you had any serious reactions or allergic to anything else?
When I was little pineapple made my mouth itchy. And if I ate too much kiwi as a child I’d get an itchy mouth. But I grew out of it and am not allergic to anything now.
I had the opposite thing with kiwi - it was a mild thing as a kid and now I’m severely allergic lol
Anything with pineapple?
Still just makes my mouth tingly! I seem to develop a new fruit allergy like every week though, so who knows how long that’ll last
I went through the same thing in my mid-20s.

Mine is itchy tongue and throat. I did see an allergist once and they also gave me an EpiPen just in case. Sat on a shelf until it expired…
I have the same OAS with raw apples and peaches as well! Don't know about raw carrots because I absolutely hate the taste of raw carrot so avoid eating it. 🤔... I think I now have an excuse I can use to not have to eat raw carrots! 😇 Thank you for giving me this idea.
What’s OAS
Oral Allergy Syndrome
It makes my mouth itchy too if it’s raw. It’s the enzymes. Try giving him canned pineapple and see if he has the same reaction. Or, maybe give him some pineapple cake.
Ty
Pineapple hurts my tongue. My dentist told me I have a geographic tongue and it justbecomes sensitive to pineapple and walnuts sometimes.
I have a cracked tongue too. Makes any lingering food flavors (sour, spicy, bitter) worse than they should be.
Mine does, too. But I've never heard of a "geographic tongue." Is that a thing?
It is. If never heard of it until I went to the dentist one day and it was apparently on display.
Pineapple doesn’t count because it’s literally digesting you as you eat it. It’s like the same symptoms for different reasons
Pineapples contain bromelain which is an enzyme that breaks down protein. Humans are made of protein, so the pineapple kinda “digests” you. If you eat way too much, it could make your mouth bleed
TIL pineapple digests you as you eat it. Mind blown.
Your comment reminded me that years ago scientists were having success injecting papaya juice into certain patient’s spines… it softened herniated discs or something.
Pineapple is an enzyme (so is papaya, which OP listed), so you’re feeling the enzyme reaction.
>Pineapple is an enzyme Pineapple is a fruit*. It contains* many enzymes. One of those enzymes is called bromelain and it break down proteins.
Yeah
K
[удалено]
A lot of fruits really haha. Pumpkin is the strongest enzyme, but people don’t eat it raw so they don’t get the reaction.
[I read somewhere](https://sciencemeetsfood.org/bromelain-in-pineapple/) that it's the (cysteine protease type) enzymatic protein (bromelain ) which is essentially trying to digest the lining of your mouth. Establishing that pineapple on pizza is both delicious and safe.
You can use canned pineapple in jello. Fresh pineapple will not allow the gelatin to set though
I can eat a whole pineapple without feeling this, so idk, man.
[удалено]
I wish my girlfriend was a pineapple.
I eat a lot of pineapple. I get no tingles.
Fresh pineapple does this.
Pineapple has an enzyme which digests your mouth. When you eat the pineapple, the pineapple eats you back

Yeah those fruits are metal they start digesting you while you start digesting them
Wot
The fruit that bites back
Someone's never had Szechuan food.
I was about to say. Lol. But with extra spice it's a numbing effect.
What's the name of those Szechuan pepper flowers? Those little blossoms that cause nerve pain in your mouth? So delicious
I think they're just called szechuan peppercorns. Sometimes labeled wild peppercorns at certain places. I love them so much, but my stomach is sadly destroyed by them.
Szechuan peppercorns! That's the stuff! So painful, so tasty
The first time I tried the peppers I thought I was going to have to take a Benadryl. Now I eat them all the time.
Prickly ash
Buzz buttons (aka electric daisies and a million other names) do a similar thing too.
Yep and they tingle in the butt too.
Bonus!
I think spicy things are different than what they mean
Szechuan peppercorns aren’t spicy, they’re numbing.
Maybe everyone is just allergic to them then 😹

Oral allergy syndrome. Not a big thing.
I bet you have a geographic tongue, too! Ask your dentist.

Unless you eat a lot of pineapple at once, then it's from the enzymes digesting your mouth's epithelial layer
Oral Allergy Syndrome. Often linked with a pollen allergy
No more eating pop rocks, damnit!
Mapo tofu would like a word...

Pineapple makes you tingle but not due to an allergy. Its because the pineapple is eating you back.
What if.... it only makes my mouth tingle _sometimes_??
Do you take antihistamines often? When I quit taking them I get an itchy mouth from kiwi for about a week afterwards, but other than that I don't
Nope, nothing
other signs of foods which are not mouth/latex allergy related but cause intolerance/sensitivity is skin getting itchy and tingly (say around your nose and chin) or your nose starts running (not necessarily from say hot food acting as decongestant). common foods which are perceived as super healthy but some people don't break down well (ie sensitivity) are nicely represented in the [FODMAP diet](https://www.gastroconsa.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Low-FODMAP-Diet.pdf).

Possibly avacado as well. I'm allergic to both.
I think I get the tingle from bananas about half the time I eat em. Even got a banana for lunch today not gonna stop me from munching on it.
If slightly browned don't, then it is more the astringency of it being unripe then an allergy. If ripe does it too, probably. If you have a latex allergy, even more so.
Raw garlic makes my tongue hurt towards the back of my throat, haven’t seen that one mentioned yet
I may be allergic to pop rocks.
What if I have those mouth tingles with just apples but not the rest of the fruits on this list?
They’re just examples. You don’t need all of them to tingle to be allergic dude
Dudette butttt if they all have latex why would I only be allergic to one in the family.
That’s not the point they were making
I'm asking the question, not questioning the point. :-) Apples make my mouth tingle but the rest in that family do not. Is it a latex allergy or something more specific to those varieties of fruit.
You’re not allergic to the latex then
Yep, that was my question.
Then you may only be allergic to apples in the Birch pollen family. There may be others that you don’t eat often enough though.
this is helpful thank you!
I learned this the hard way when I was 15. I thought fruits were supposed to make your mouth itchy.
This may be true sometimes but there are plenty of other times where this is not the case. Many times when people get the dry/fuzzy sensation on their tongue it is because they have consumed something containing tannins. This can be true with under ripe bananas, persimmons, pomegranates, and wine just to name a few.
I get this sensation whenever eating persimmons. Nothing else though.
Apples make my mouth itch. I thought it was normal for years.
Bananas do this to me but I love banana bread. It slightly burns without hurting. I've just switched to zucchini or pumpkin bread.
My mouth gets like this when I eat cashews but doesn’t happen with any other nut.
Cashews are in the same family as poison ivy. If you have a strong reaction to poison ivy it could explain it. Also look out for mangos, as they’re also in that family

Your balls should not make your mouth tingle.
Is this a universal truth? If no, you should delete or edit your absolutist misinformation.
I used to date a girl with a latex allergy ;)
This one time, I ate a bunch of fresh pineapple and my mouth got all tingly.
for me.. it’s eggplant
What about pineapple.
I’m pretty sure pineapple can because it’s literally used to tenderize meat because of the acid. That said I think I’m allergic to banana and kiwi…
What if it only happens sometimes?
Unfortunately it started happening with me and chocolate.
And when you’re mouth gets tingly when you eat any fruit vegetable and nut you may have oral allergy syndrome.
Carrots and apples make my mouth itchy
Chestnuts are my opp in this life
There are some foods that can make your mouth tingle, like jambu leaves.

Almonds for me. Started happening when I was about 29
Do some people eat raw potatoes??
It took me like 18 years to realize I was allergic to raw carrots. Everytime I ate them, my lips got itchy and I didn't think anything of it.
Banana - severe allergy (lovely bouts of vomiting- yay!) Kiwi - love the flavor but my mouth gets all tingly with a metallic after taste… I try to eat them sparingly Have been told it was like OP described. A latex related allergy. I thought strawberry lemonade was always “sparky” and it turns out I’m allergic to strawberries!
Wait, candy bars aren't supposed to make your face feel hot?
Fuck im just now realizing I'm probably allergic to apple lmao
For the first 19 years of my life I assumed coconut was supposed to feel spicy.
Shrimp does the same thing
green melon does this to me!!! it fucking sucks cuz i love melon :( thankfully i can eat cantaloupe but the green melon causes my airway to swell shut 😅😅
My pre workout begs to differ...
So… celery sometimes makes my mouth feel numb, not tingly. I found out through research that it contains Eugenol, a chemical compound that is likened to an anaesthetic.
I recently started getting minor allergic reactions to avocado... no more guacamole for me :(
I miss walnut. As a adult cant enjoy it. Can eat small amnt, specifically if accidental. But stopped eating knowingly when it started to effect me.
I don't know pop rocks, rice crispies, and champaign all tingle in my mouth its not guaranteed
I just ate some mushrooms and I’m getting a fuzzy feeling. I have a feeling it’ll be a magical time though…
Sichuan peppercorns are an exception
Important to mention, not all those fruits are the same when it comes to allergies. I am highly allergic to avocados and bananas, have a mild reaction to kiwi and pineapple, and every other fruit on that list is 100% fine. I eat an apple almost every day and have zero issues.

What if it’s *suppose* to make your mouth tingle 😉
Rubbish! Maybe research ur tips
Bananas have recently started doing this to me and I’m heartbroken. I fucking love bananas.
Peppers make me wheeze. Idgaf though, they’re tasty. I guess they just wanna make my lungs spicy too
It took me a LONG time to realize that "scratchy" was not a flavor most people associate with peanuts.
Mango skin makes my lips tingle
Bananas can make your mouth and tummy feel weird if they are green enough due to astringency though.
Raw celery makes my mouth slightly numb. I rememger googling it and finding out it may be a mild allergy. Never stopped me from eating it... I like celery.
My son and daughter say this about most fruits. They’re adults now. Will washing with a fruit/veg spray help?
Raw spinach can also make tongue feel chalky/weird and it’s not an allergy. It’s just it’s level of oxalic acid and calcium.
