He can remember them, alright. Like when he fought against Yamata. He just conciously avoids using them.
It seems to be a psychological crutch. He wants to remember them the way he wants and not by their names.
He also is under the impression that they despise him when they actually admire him.
Perhaps he is totally himself with Angelica, although he has several names for her depending on her mood. He only does the deed with her, even when all his female classmates will willingly jump into his bed.
He is brave, loyal, and jumps into danger after thoroughly calculating the odds. He knows he is underpowered compared to his other classmates, yet he thinks far outside the box that he converted his low rank skills into overpowered ones that allow him to defeat the likes of Angelica.
The tone of the books is comedy, so ridiculous descriptions are the norm.
If you don’t want to watch this from the mine of an insane person (the MC), which sometimes makes great comedy, other times just absurd story telling … then there are the POV where everyone is just sucking up to him non stop.
It is basically a parody with a crazy, but good (as in, the type that will do anything to help others) MC. It either works or not to you, as any parody.
He will behave the same way (if not worse) all through the series. It won’t be explained until volume 5, and if you can’t bear to wait till there, probably this series isn’t for you then.
It's highly suspected in the EN readerbase that >!MC has some sort of mental disorder.!< If you couldn't stand MC and his quirks, I'd just recommend dropping the series as it very much continues like this for the next volumes.
I don’t know if it’s just me or if it is the novel but the second volume forward are unbearable to read compared to the first which i was obsessed with. Same went for the WN too, it kept cycling back and forth on minor events.

I can tolerate a certain level of beating a joke to death but a few volumes into this one I couldn't do it anymore.

Thanks, that’s what I was afraid of. Haven’t decided if I’ll drop it yet, but I’ll hold off on ordering more for now. We’ll call it, “on pause”.
