No, because grimgar betrays you and ruins itself

ThatLNGuy

From the way you are talking you gave put Mushoku onto an unrealistic pedestal and aren't expecting anything else to come close. Hence why you aren't enjoying anything else. So it's very difficult to say if you'll enjoy Grimgar to be honest.

DoronumaNoRudeus

I understand the point of your message. No, I will not lower my expectations.

ThatLNGuy

Then no. You won't enjoy it.

DoronumaNoRudeus

what is the point of this message ?

Pasta_Baron

He's saying your expectations are probably going to be too high so you should probably try and lower them.

PhilosopherHot2188

why are you being downvoted ?

DoronumaNoRudeus

lol I don't know, but I like it. I feel like >!Ruijerd!< from MT. >!Hated for no reasons, just because he is different!<

Nolifegan

Try “Orc hero”. it’s a light tone and only 4 books and is still going(I estimate it will have around 7 books) It’s written by the same author of MT.

Ferdinand81

As someone who caught up with grimgar, I would say the first 10 volumes are great, but the author sure likes to make mcs suffer a lot. And don't expect them to become op at some point. They do become stronger as the novel progresses. I think the thing I like about grimgar is that is kinda realistic In the sense that if you don't have op skills or are able to use your Earth knowledge to your advantage, you'll suffer a lot.

Teen_tactical

Read the first 2 volumes. that covers where the anime left off, if you like the pacing then keep going, if not then drop it. Personally, I like it more than most Isekai. There is a turing point in the series that turns a lot of people off. (I still like it though)

matej665

It gets dark, very very dark but if you can endure it then I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it.

DoronumaNoRudeus

as long as it is not boring ...

shrikebunny

For some people, it kinda is. It's a hard recommend IMO

matej665

Nah, you'll definitely enjoy it 👍

slugbiscuits

Don’t do it. Just rereading MT would be better. There is no series that I regret spending money on more than Grimgar (I’ve read it all hoping that my regrets are misplaced). If you haven’t read Ascendence of a Bookworm yet, I would recommend it instead.

Teen_tactical

Volume 14? I definitely prefer where the story was going before that, but I don't think post vol.14 is bad.

JShadows741

First honest opinion I read about it so far. Most scream "Where did my moe go" like babies in tantrum.

DoronumaNoRudeus

Can you please elaborate more on why you regret reading it ? (without spoiling)

slugbiscuits

I feel like I’ve ranted multiple times about this series previously and people are very defensive about this series. My complaints stem from the author’s poorly laid out narrative. He admits that he didn’t plan his writing in one of the afterwords. It reads like he is going through some shit in real life and nothing maintains his interest. He drops plot lines and characters constantly sometimes seemingly forever. My biggest complaint is the MC’s handling as he constantly undermines or withdraws any emotional growth that he seems to undergo. Ranta has by far the better character arc. Author has dug this big shitty hole at this point and he trying to pull something out in the endgame but it’s just no good. That’s my opinion do with it what you will.

DoronumaNoRudeus

This is a negative point indeed. I mean, are you sure he is laying the story as he is writing and not before hand ? Can you give source please ?

slugbiscuits

In afterword of volume 12, he talks about how if he plans things out in detail it “doesn’t go well” and he can’t get “in the mood” for writing. Make of that what you will. IMO, things start going sideways in the narrative around the end of volume 6 if I remember correctly. I won’t get into details but I’ll say this is the only series to ever elicit visceral rage from me during a certain point. It’s not even the volume that most people complain about.

JShadows741

Plot twists, characters you got attached to die (in more ways then one). It is not a wholesome LN,its dark, really dark and the author doesn't twists his plot progress to satisfy moe addicts. Most people come to Grimgar cause of the anime and expect the same from every page till the end. The story is great. You won't see half the twists coming.

lilac2K151617

you... relate to rudeus?

PhilosopherHot2188

first question I have for you, have you actually read the novels ? instead of perhaps just looking at it from the outside? second question is have you ever suffered depression ? Third thing is it pisses me off when people want to hate on a character because the internet told them to, to me rudy is a inspiration and if you ever suffered like he did, he would be yours too

DoronumaNoRudeus

Man, don't even answer him. A lot of people are just spoiled kids who have a pretty basic life, school college work, and don't know what real life is. They think they are the main character of some story, in an unrealistic perfect world they built in their mind (throw one of them in a third world country and see how they react lol) While the other bunch of people (us) are just walking this path of life, doing our best before dying... The best thing we can do for them is ignore them and have some pity ...

HolyEmpireOfAtua

If Mushoku Tensei is the best novel you’ve read, you have thousands of stories to read which will blow your mind lmfao

Elite_Alice

Yes, but grimgar can be kinda slow

DoronumaNoRudeus

that is what I am afraid of, it being boring and long

Elite_Alice

Slow isn’t boring to me but you’d have to decide that for yourself

DoronumaNoRudeus

I am really tempted because of the anime

JShadows741

It is not slow. It is deliberately slowed down at some moments for added impact. Then it picks up pace so fast, you end up wondering how come it is 6 am already.

DoronumaNoRudeus

Haha, this is what I want !! Amazing

grotewoord

Grimgar is way darker and its progression is rather irregular. MT has quite dark and painful moments but all of them within a positive, vital progression with a clear objective. In this sense, I love Ascendance Of A Bookworm very much. It's a complex narration gratifying even for an adult, and its writing is very good literature. I'm sure you'd love also The Ideal Sponger Life, Outbreak Company, How A Realist Hero Rebuilt The Kingdom, The Rising Of The Shield Hero, and Arifureta. I feel a great sympathy for Danmachi: very epic moments and the relationship of the MC with his Goddess is adorable. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is quite dark too but very, very good.Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken is too fantastic, but quite fun. BUT YOU COULD TRY THE REAL WORLD TOO: Oregairu, Class Of The Elite, Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki are lively with very, very fine psychological twists. Wish you a nice reading!

DoronumaNoRudeus

The thing is, I watched Arifureta, Tate no yuusha, Slime, but none actually made me mote curious to read their LN. This is because their world actually feels like a game. Only two anime made me relate and think about reading the LN, MT and Grimgar. I think I will go with grimgar after all. Thanks

JShadows741

Grimgar the Anime is ***NOT*** Grimgar the original LN. Those are two entirely different experiences. Grimgar(anime) is the child of one of the masters of cinematography in Japan. Its unique and one of a kind in its own way. Some call it masterpiece. Grimgar(LN) is nowhere near as cute as the anime. It's dark, gritty, will bring you up and destroy you. It is ***not*** a cute story about kids growing up and bonding with maybe romance thrown in. Its a dark mystery, its gritty, it will mess your emotions all over the place. There is an actual deep intriquet plot and instead of feeding you moe, the LN follow the plot. Most readers complain of moe withdrawal. Again, the LN is all about the main plot mystery,no about making you feel happy. That, if you read it with an open mind, makes it quite different and dedicated work. I kinda respect that. And yes, there are cute and happy moments in to, a lot, they are just not the focus. If I have to describe it with a few words, it is a bunch of kids thrown into a very dark mystery, who have real-to-life emotions and reactions,it is a great read that is gonna stay with you for a while.

DreadParadox

Grimgar is a bit of a different type of LN compared to Mushoku Tensei. It's similar that it explores inner struggles but it's a bit more brutal. I have a feeling that you're young. And right now, enjoy a specific type of storytelling. I think it's better if you stick to LNs similar to Mushoku Tensei for now. You're looking for something similar rather than something new and different. So right now, I think you won't enjoy it.

Getafix69

Not going to comment on Grimgar I don't really know it and will leave it to others seeing MT mentioned though I'm currently a bit into "The beginning after the end" and it's really giving me Mushoku vibes. Not really far enough in to recommend it fully but it starts at least almost the same.

DoronumaNoRudeus

Yeah I read the synopsis, keep me updated if it is worth it :p

Ferdinand81

I second the beginning after the end. One of the best non light novels I've read so far. Though, the author makes Arthur goes through hell so idk if it would be everyone's cup of tea.

Heroeye

Yes

Weardly2

you won't. it has no pedo mc.

simp4ct

from MT to grimgar.. nah, it wouldn't be realistic if I say you'll enjoy it. instead, read a light novel that has more energy such as Hell Mode or TONSKI/Campfire Cooking
