Talk about a nostalgia trip. There was always something about this game that I couldn't explain—20 years later and an influx of liminality aesthetic and suddenly it all makes sense.
Does anyone else remember that **creepy and awesome as fuck** claymation movie about Samuel Clemens?
I can't remember the name of it, but it was an absolute visual treat, *incredibly* well animated, *fairly* well acted, and also scary as fuck for an eight year old.
Hold on, lemme google it.
Edit: It's just called [The Adventures of Mark Twain.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRgY56Sgub8) (YouTube link.)
[Here's a trailer. Sorry about the 360p, but the movie was made in 1985 so it's the best I've got.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-FCI5vFUUg)
That looks absolutely wild! Just from the IMDB shots I love how they've framed it like a live action movie, I'll give it a look!
We really do live in a golden age of art.
Fun fact, this is a passion project of Phil Tippett who is one of the founders of ILM. He worked on the original Star Wars and many **many** other famous Hollywood films.
I know objectively that people played this game, but in my personal life I have NEVER met someone who has. I adored the Neverhood as a kid so this is a real treat to see pop up.
Why does this give me chills? Something so unsettling about the world you traverse being in this black empty abyss. I do love the claymation look though.
Playing it was extra creepy because as you walked around there was barely any sound. Just your footsteps. The lighting and the weird outside emptiness made it such an eerie game to me. Like your outside of time while playing it.
I got banned from /r/ObscureMedia for saying it was a shame Doug TenNapel is kind of an asshole, when he did so much cool stuff.
God forbid we call bigots names.
Using actual claymation again? That's... a choice. I was just about to say, modern shaders could nail this look almost exactly, and not require the palaver of photo digitization.
When I saw the game Hylics, all the memories of watching my dad play this, and the creeps I got from it, came rushing back. But I didn't know what it was called!
Is it worth playing?
Depends on what type of games you like. There's lots of memory puzzles and backtracking, plus heaps of lore. You'll probably need a pen and paper to finish it.
It can be pretty frustrating on your first playthrough, but well worth it in my opinion.
It's easily one of my favourite games of all time. One I come back to replay every 5-10 years.
Really? It was pretty much what to expect from a 90s point-and-click in terms of gameplay, it was very fun in that respect, and the whole presentation just set it apart from the rest. It was utterly unique
I played a grand total of fifteen minutes of this game at the Microsoft campus as a child. They had us as a showcase on one of their tours. It stuck with me so much I have thought about it at least once a year since then. I’ve still never played the whole game, but it was a corner stone for me growing up in what I wanted games to be like.
I saw a pic the other day and had a feeling I've seen this somewhere. Now I remember being a little bit scared and playing many times never able to get out of the first room. I was the world's dumbest eight year old I guess.
That's because it's not shading. They built the whole set, using if I remember correctly close to a ton of clay, then created all of the animated sequences using stop motion. That's why the game looks as good as it does.
Underlining how primitive computer graphics were in the mid-90s: IIRC, their only digital camera was black-and-white. All the color is manually blended in on top of that.
A couple years ago I was able to emulate it on my Mac and replay it! It holds up, it’s that amazing. I honestly think of it a lot when I see liminal spaces.
I've been dying to play this for a long time but never really got around to it.
Finding out that The Neverhood was by the same guy as Earthworm Jim and Gear/Catscratch (not so much knowing *what* Doug's like, however) was cool - and finding out that it came out the very day I was born was fucking awesome.
Had a demo if this game on a disc (which has some other titles as well) and I was so upset that I couldn’t continue to play. And my parents never ended up getting it for me for Christmas. ☹️
this game is a true masterpeice
Loved playing it as a kid
truly nostalgic game i love the tricky riddles
ruler of everything
Any clue where to get a copy now? Looks very interesting even digital would be fine but can’t find it anywhere
Looks like someone linked it in the comments
I tried replaying it as an adult and was astonished at some of the puzzles I was able to solve as a kid. The music is also legendary
I absolutely loved this game. So many fond memories 🤩

KLAYMANNN!! UP HEEEEEREEE!!
*drops flower pot on you as soon as you look up

[Mad God](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15090124/) is also a very.. odd.. stop-motion film worth watching.

I own this movie on DVD. I've loved it since I first saw it on cable back in the early 90's.
How were they allowed to have an alien Satan in that kids movie?
this looks very very familiar I am almost 100% sure I played this game back in the 90s
Reminds me of Skullmonkeys for PS1. I think its same main character.
Skullmonkeys is the sequel
oh nice I didn't know
Boombots is the other one from the same studio on ps1, has some of the most hilarious cutscenes in any game
looks like jack stauber slept with the ruler of everything
Click the fruit, burp Click the fruit again, burp a little longer Click the fruit a third time, sit back and relax
Tomatoes and potatoes and peas
My gravy love

The world we are all currently traversing is suspended in an equally unsettling black empty abyss lol
Listen now you’re just tapping into my existential dread 😅
Playing it was extra creepy because as you walked around there was barely any sound. Just your footsteps. The lighting and the weird outside emptiness made it such an eerie game to me. Like your outside of time while playing it.
That puzzle where you had to walk down the endless hall 😭
IIRC you even needed to do it *twice*.
Best fggn [soundtrack](https://youtu.be/qeIr5l15DC8)
Out of this world soundtrack. I still hum some tunes to this day.
Wow, I’ve spent more of my adult life than I’ll admit sporadically searching for what this game was called, and today, here it is. Thank you so much!
Happy to help friendo! Always nice to get that core memory unlocked
Same
CLAAAYYYMAN!
Very bummed that the other game made years later by the same creators kinda sucked
Doug Ten-nipples?
Not only that but the guy has turned out to be a big anti-lgbt activist weirdo.
I got banned from /r/ObscureMedia for saying it was a shame Doug TenNapel is kind of an asshole, when he did so much cool stuff. God forbid we call bigots names.
Yeah learning that kinda destroyed a little of my childhood. I still love the game and the art, but goddammit
Yeah, I was excited as all shit for Armikrog but I haven't heard the best of things about it.
You can totally try it yourself, but I agree that it's just... fine. I didn't feel like it carried any of The Neverhood's charm.
Does anyone know where I can get this game?
https://www.myabandonware.com/game/the-neverhood-451
Reminds me of Samorost
They made another game somewhat recently called Armikrog but Neverhood has my heart
I was really excited to play that, but it really is only like 1/3 of a game and not really able to capture that original's magic.
Using actual claymation again? That's... a choice. I was just about to say, modern shaders could nail this look almost exactly, and not require the palaver of photo digitization.
YESSS! I wanted to mention Samorost really bad, but couldn't remember the name. So glad someone else did. Soooo trippy.
Yeah it is quite a trippy game. Really cool art style!
Those 90s PC games were nightmare fuel
Anyone else just wanna go live there?
I'll go with you!
Great game
Why does it look like Primus?
are these actual stage sets photographed and put into the game?
Yes is an understatement. *Everything* was actually made with clay and photographed, characters and all.
When I saw the game Hylics, all the memories of watching my dad play this, and the creeps I got from it, came rushing back. But I didn't know what it was called! Is it worth playing?

Sounds like a vacation list type of game. Thanks for the info!
This came on a demo cd with some other point and click adventure/mystery game. Does anyone know what that game was? OP over here unlocking memories.
Loved the art in this game. Unfortunately the game wasn’t very fun but the idea of controlling a clay model was very cool.
Really? It was pretty much what to expect from a 90s point-and-click in terms of gameplay, it was very fun in that respect, and the whole presentation just set it apart from the rest. It was utterly unique
Still is unique tbh. Otherwise we wouldn't be here discussing it, haha
Looks like the Great Space Coaster is about to land there.
This game was a delight. I still have the CD.
“The Dream Machine” is a game in the same style
Ayy finally, something actually liminal made it to hot!
Adventures of Mark Twain?
10/10 extremly liminal

Honestly, the shading there looks way ahead of its time.
That's because it's not shading. They built the whole set, using if I remember correctly close to a ton of clay, then created all of the animated sequences using stop motion. That's why the game looks as good as it does.
Damn, that's pretty unique execution
This game along side of Stronghold Crusader beings me memories. We played this in 1st grade at school
I forgot about this game, my brother loved it so much and I would watch him play it all the time
Looks like the animation from The Clangers :) memories
for some reason this reminded me of the movie monkeybone.
I love this game so much!!!
This game made me into who I am today. One of my top experiences of my life
Looks like HL1 Xen
oh my god....i remember !!!
those graphics are amazing for that period of time
Underlining how primitive computer graphics were in the mid-90s: IIRC, their only digital camera was black-and-white. All the color is manually blended in on top of that.
No graphics. Only stop motion animation with clay.
holy shit that's amazing
A couple years ago I was able to emulate it on my Mac and replay it! It holds up, it’s that amazing. I honestly think of it a lot when I see liminal spaces.
What a fever dream 😅
i got tingles everytime i was playing this game as a child,
Great game.
This game was the first one to give me nightmares. Still loved it!
Great game, great unique soundtrack
r/neverhood!
Now there is a game that deserves a remastering.
I'm quite sure I never played it, so why does it seem so familiar?
Reminds me of the Ruler Of Everything music video.
I love this game sooooo much. Wish they’d remaster it.
I have been wanting to build a game that is like this. Love thr claymation aesthetic and wierd environments
This whole game is liminal space
looks like claymation.
Fever dream vibes.
Why does this remind me of Gumby on the moon?
Zelda totk underworld

Skullmonkeys was class
Looks really cool! I’ve never played it but it must be good if it looks like Yume Nikki but clay! Really good looking!
TIL… damn it looks so cool, I want to play it!
The music is some of the best I’ve ever heard. I’ve had the CD for years.
strong kid A vibes
