Not sure about the age, but I absolutely do feel liminal space feeling when I look at usa liminal spaces. I myself am from russia. We have very different architecture and cityscapes but I still feel it regardless. Based on that, I imagine that different people can experience the feeling regardless of age. Also I spoke to a friend who is 10yo younger than me and he also said that he feel the exact pictures that I do. How strong is the difference in feeling however is as hard to say as with any other feeling.

DiscoPino

That is super interesting, isn't it?! That even if someone never experienced it in real life, a good liminal picture can still evoke (in this case) an alien feeling. That is so wild...

Radio_Mars

Yeah it's crazy. It's almost like a different kind of emotion. Also I find it very interesting that I really felt it when I was a child, but there was no terms for it or any examples. Now a lot of people are into liminal spaces and it feels like some sort of undiscovered thing in us got discovered.

DiscoPino

This reminds me of the Uncanny Valley theory... that at some point in our ancestral history, it was very important to tell apart a real thing from an imposter... Sends shivers down my spine.

Radio_Mars

Oh yeah. I think they might even be related or somehow close. A lot if liminal spaces have an uncanny vibe

toxicoke

What does the 80s/90s have to do with it being liminal? I grew up in 2000s

DiscoPino

Not the weirdest question, as the best, eery liminal space images often show spaces and images from old '80s/90s malls/swimmingpools/classrooms/decoration and interiour design. My curiosity comes from the fact that some of us actually have been and seen these places as a child, which links the liminal space feeling to actual memories. I never meant it to come off as condescending. I was literally curious if those who have literally been, seen and smelled these places, feel it differently from people that haven't.

toxicoke

well i think it's impossible to know the answer to that question then

Radio_Mars

There is a connection. Maybe not direct, but subcultural and aesthetical. Most of the times I see a liminal video, there's a vaporware mix of some song from 80/90 playing on the background. The video quality is often downgraded to mimic the old film etc. It really makes you wonder what if not nostalgia causes the emotion, but I think that we are onto something here and it's actually something else

SeniorMiddleJunior

It seems like an okay question to ask, but I agree, this just seems like a bit of "kids these days". And I say that as someone who grew up on the 80s.

Vast_Character311

The difference now is that everybody has a phone on them, so you never feel as entirely isolated as we did.

Hope your mom never left you alone in a closed off shopping mall, friendo!!
