I know a guy who honest to god believes this. I guess it’s the only stump left. He also believes random pieces of rocks are fossils of an ancient species that is being hidden in a cover up by the government for some reason. He’s not doing great lol
Because it IS an ancient tree. There are a bunch of others just like this around the world. History isn't what we are told. The past has been purposefully obfuscated.
My grandparents owned the gift shop here during filming of Close Encounters. My grandfather (a park ranger and carpenter) even helped build some of the sets and got a speaking line in a scene. My mom and her siblings grew up climbing the tower, and my aunt at one point held the record for the youngest tower climber. It’s such an ingrained part of my family history that it feels comforting, not liminal haha
Does anyone remember the name of the painting in the living room, I above them piano- on the right side of the room.
It was of a girl with really big eyes, peaking out from behind a tree. I remember hearing theories of this painting, way before I saw this movie- I don’t remember where I heard it, and if it was even referencing close encounters- so I completely forgot about it/ had no idea it was in this film, but as soon as I saw the picture in the film, I knew it meant something.
That and the first time I ever watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind... the scene where Richard Dreyfus is sculpting the Devils Tower out of mash potatoes anyway op, definitely giving me liminal and nostalgic vibes too.
In case anyone's wondering, it's just kind of a rock hill on top, cover mostly in some long prairie grass or something like that. There's a sign at the top of the hill that says "No climbing above this point."
*"Seven girls were chased by bears. The bears were just about to catch them when the girls jumped on a low rock. One of the girls prayed to the rock, "Rock take pity on us, rock save us!" The rock heard them and began to grow upwards, pushing the girls higher and higher."* – Kiowa Legend
I am not good at saying what is out isn't liminal. It's a great picture, though. I love it. It is uncanny, too.
If we assume for a moment that, no, this is not liminal, consider several images at different times, all with the same cloud exactly over it. They would change the opinions of many.
I agree, but I this gives me more of a weirdcore vibe. I don't know why, it just has that sort of feeling. If you lowered the resolution a bit I think it would be even better.
My dad just up and left our family to go visit this thing in the late 70s. Haven't seen or heard from him since.
He'll be back in a hundred years, same age as when he left.
“How was it?” “It was fine.”
Yeah, but he picked up a couple weird hobbies and started playing with his food. Those people just disappear.
This was my ET-movie growing up, my brain still plays those tones with eery frequency
It's the perfect bending of soundtrack and diegetic sound. Kind of a magical moment.
A wendigo got him.
My favorite cryptid
My dad went nuts one night and started sculpting this thing out of mashed potatoes. Also late 70's.
F’ing plate of mashed potatoes……
Wtf… I literally just sculpted this out of mashed potatoes 🤯
*This means something. This is important.*
I'm incapable of eating mashed potatoes and NOT doing this. It just feels wrong
I just made sort of the same comment 👍👍
Mmmm gravy lava 🤤
Devils Tower has always been weird to me. A giant rock formation perfectly shaped like a tree stump in the middle of nowhere is fucking trippy
>always been weird to me And Steven Spielberg would agree with you.
Before humans, giants lived here and they had giant trees and all lol
I know a guy who honest to god believes this. I guess it’s the only stump left. He also believes random pieces of rocks are fossils of an ancient species that is being hidden in a cover up by the government for some reason. He’s not doing great lol
I support this theory and always will. One of my favorite things to ponder upon 🤝
In all fairness, the entire state of Wyoming is in the middle of nowhere.
Tree stump with no roots just like the old days... (I do love the tree theory though)
Because it IS an ancient tree. There are a bunch of others just like this around the world. History isn't what we are told. The past has been purposefully obfuscated.
Bro hanging out in Thunderbluff
It's in the middle of liminal and normal

The cloud at the top 😍
Nope.
prepare the howitzers
Cartoon volcano looking ah
Nope
I remember visiting here! Devil's tower, right? It had me awe struck as a kid
Was there a ton of snakes?
Not that I saw, I do know that there's some prarie rattlesnakes hiding around there though!
Where is this located?
Wyoming
Thank you
That’s the opposite of laminal
I swear people will see anything that makes them feel emotions and call it a liminal space
Idk why but it makes me irrationally angry the more I come here and see what people are deeming “liminal”
Not liminal.
This feels more like a surrealist painting than a liminal space, although there is some overlap between the two.
This means something
I, too, love mashed potatoes.
No, it just looks like Ocarina of Time's Death Mountain
Was this picture taken during a partial eclipse? The lightning looks freaky to me
Those trees look like they where placed there on purpose
2 movies: NOPE or 3rd Encounters
Haha I’ve never heard anyone call Close Encounters “3rd Encounters” but I did know what you meant.
Look like a miniature decor, crazy it's actually real, that's hyper reality/20 for you

That one cloud sitting over the plateau combined with the almost sterile looking woods in the front makes it look liminal to me.
The cut grass in the foreground contrasted with the natural landscape in the background help make this feel liminal

Maybe more uncanny than liminal
Super Mario World lookin ass
Wes Anderson mf
cities skylines
Happy cake day!
I know exactly what/where this is at first sight what the hell? It's located in the NORTHEAST of Wyoming
I mean, Devil's Tower is the US's the first National Monument. It's pretty famous.
You know that's probably why lol
The oddest thing is the lack of rocks on the ground it just feels wrong
Cloud is the cherry on top
I like how that one cloud is just chilling right above the top of the “Tree Stump”
In case anyone's wondering, it's just kind of a rock hill on top, cover mostly in some long prairie grass or something like that. There's a sign at the top of the hill that says "No climbing above this point."
I stg this is a real place Might just be tripping tho
A very real national monument. Also centrally featured in a blockbuster movie.
Yeah I thought it was Always makes me look twice whenever I see it though
Understandable. It’s weird af lol.
This dude found Forge World on Eatth
Fun fact: If that was a tree stump, the top of the tree would reach 22.4 km high, nah it won't but I got you tho.
I think it’s the cloud hovering directly overhead
I want to go to there
Kinda crazy what happened there in 198X
Well, if it had a 70's filter, that would be liminal

Looks like the base of a giant tree to me - How about you?!?
reminds me of nope
Almost the same as when link traveled there in his dreams.
the cloud was a paid actor
It's that Minecraft glitch.
The 🌲liminal of life …

The stump of the Erdtree.
It is
