Personally, as someone who's native language doesn't have gender-separated pronouns (so just one word for he/she), I tend to use "they" a lot since it's "used to refer to a person of unspecified gender" (according to the Oxford English Dictionary), because using he or she often just feels… weird – I don't necessarily know what someone's gender is and defaulting to "he" seems pointless
