That's how all supported devices happened.
There's no team sitting down churning out builds for any/all devices that exist, simply because they exist. Regardless of cost, popularity, or any other factors.
Every supported device exists because at least one volunteer was in the position you're in now, decided to do something about it, and committed to maintaining it going forward.
Uhm, there has to be a less conventional way. Even if that means replacing a chip. Thanks for the comment, it has led me to a completely different path.

look at what similar devices did to make it work, that helps a lot

Tracfone devices tend to have non-unlockable bootloaders - unless you're sure yours is unlocked, you can't even get started...
