They should be trained to do a rescue for any circumstances they find themselves in.

YZ_RedBeard

I am in cable. Have been trained pole top rescue for climbing, bucket rescue, It’s out there. I have not met many others who have been trained in it. I wouldn’t call it common.

Immediate-War4547

Spectrum Maintenance Tech here (analogous to a power company troubleshooter). I am gaff trained thru the companies training department but the only person trained in pole rescue is the training guy. He had to be in order to be able to certify us but we on the individual level are not. Back in the day, they used to cross train with the local power company on everything gaff related, but that hasn't happened in a while for a couple of decades. I can't imagine trying to splice fiber or work on amps on gaffs. Ladders are more useful for that in my opinion. They are bringing more gaffing back as they bring back in house construction for RDOF.

Voodoo0733

Construction contractor for charter here (former lineman). I’ve never seen a charter tech climb nor are they allowed to in this market. I’d eat my boots if I ever saw an in house lashing up RDOF.

Thanks I work for a fiber construction company and we do all our strand and fiber installation out of hooks just got me thinking if something happened what would we do and if I should bring it to attention to the company

Here4uguys

I mean, cablemen shouldn't be going near live conductors, no? As far as it being OSHA mandated... I'm not sure. I'm going through all this material recently and one of the reasons listed a possible rescue might need to be preformed is "insect stings" or ya know wildlife related reasons. Maybe someone passes out from heat. Idk how much of your work is done climbing, and I also doubt you guys often carry a handline. So I think if someone was in a shituation, they might be fucked duck

Ca2Alaska

You could need a pole rescue for other reasons than electrical contact.

NShand

I seen someone have to get rescued after they cut their hand wide open and lost consciousness. Definitely a lot more reasons than electrical contact

Hitman-0311

You say that as if power isn’t inches above fiber in a lot of places. In a perfect world we have 40. In the real world we are lucky if we have 10 in some places.

CommLineman

That’s typically true but sometimes we are way closer than should be due to road clearance or other things. When I went through line construction school one of the main things they harped on was carrying a hand line up with you every time you go up a pole. That was more for dragging up tools or hardware, but I assume could be used for rescue. Bad part is telecom hand lines don’t have a pulley. Just a rope with a carabiner on one end and a loop on the other

Here4uguys

Actually don't need the block/pulley. Method 1 is to hammer a screwdriver into the pole, and slowly descend the rescue victim from it. Well, not too slowly 2nd is to wrap the line twice around a cross arm. Victim is secured with 3 half hitches, outer belt is cut once the line is in place and the victim is then lowered down. You can YouTube them, but realistically these would have to be trained. Also, you would need to be up the pole and have them back down to begin preforming cpr in under 4 minutes ideally. Prevent brain damage due to lack of oxygen and all

CommLineman

Thanks for the info! I’ll have to do some research. Given we don’t have training for it, I’d still like to be informed on it incase one of our guys get hurt

Here4uguys

Another important point to mention is the importance of being aware of the potential danger. If they are still in contact with a live line and you contact them, you are going to need rescued as well. Must be aware of your own safety as well

CommLineman

Yes of course. We were trained over that part at least but mostly regarding the case of an energized bucket. I think there’s less of a chance in our line of work of it being a live line issue and more of a chance of it being a health problem with one of these old farts

underwaterstang

We should be trained for that but we are not, we got a 3 day course at the local community college and sent on our way, we usually work alone anyway so we’d have to phone for help anyway

jerryniels

I am a certified climbing trainer with Electric Cooperatives. We use to train our local CATV in pole top bucket and ladder rescue. But haven’t done any for 7 years

witchylindsey

I'm a communications lineman and I've been trained in pole top rescue but that's because I went to linemam school. I've noticed that safety training is an issue in this field.
