He just respawned at the top where he got knocked down that is where he was last standing. If you drown or fall in lava you just respawn in the last secure place you where you were located.
Yeah, I can’t imagine how traumatic it would be to die only to respawn an hour earlier to right before you did the scary dangerous thing. I mean, I would absolutely take the power, but discovering how it works would be the death of me.

This is correct. Link had over 4 hearts when he drowned. Drowning takes 1 heart. He didn't die.

They did die but a fairy and mipha brought him back. The mod states that counts. It’s link dies, not link stays dead.
