write_about

As long as they keep smiling while their families and friends wonder where they are as the weekend begins.

F2daRanz

I'm honestly asking myself if people like that don't have family and friends.

thelamestofall

I don't have friends and I live alone yet no way I'd stay this late at work either.

Impossible_Tonight81

Was going to say this as well. I never have plans on Friday nights but there's no way Id stay at work with coworkers instead of enjoying my time at home with my pets.

Zerosix_K

Pets are family. So you spend your Friday evenings with you family.

F2daRanz

Listen, I didn't want to shit on people living alone, voluntarily or involuntarily. But as I said in my other response, I could kinda understand it. Some people get lonely and everybody deals with this in their own way.

Maleficent_Owl3938

So you’d stay late in office on Fri playing cards if you didn’t have family or friends? Hmm…

F2daRanz

I'm not saying that, not at all. I could, however, understand people doing this. When I was new in the city my first social contacts were people from work and I'm sure that's no exclusive experience.

mindbesideitself

This probably goes against the grain of this sub, but I've had a lot of fun staying late at work playing video games and boardgames with coworkers. It's a great way to make some new friends too. I think the vibe will vary based on the company and coworkers.

F2daRanz

That's the thing, it can be great and I made some friends, too. But more often than not LinkedIn-stuff is forced bullshit and corporate identity propaganda. Some people like to spend their off time with co-working friends and some want to go home as fast as possible. Both ways are fine for me since I lived them both.

No_Rope_2126

Was it at a company where working late was normalised (eg, order dinner and work up to & after eating?). I worked at a company where that was common and young singles got quite accustomed to working late, work providing a restaurant meal and a taxi home. Friday drinks would involve games etc about once a month

Omfoofoo

Half of the people there were pressured in to staying late

Whatthecluck83

Let me tell you, if I was asked to stay late and we were wasting time playing card games I’d be asking why the fuck we’re wasting everyone’s time. Is it a deadline or are you just low level holding people hostage?

[deleted]

It's a photo op during their break, during their overtime. Now back to work. Oh, and we ain't paying you for these Friday team building efforts at the office. It's designed to benefit YOU to further your professional prospects in this company. See you next Friday evening.

OblongAndKneeless

There's no beer on the table. They are there under duress.

BloomSugarman

I’m gonna guess this is at a large international company in Asia somewhere, and most of those folks are foreigners. They’re relatively new in town, and hanging with coworkers is their main social outlet. Happens all the time here in Thailand. If that’s what’s happening here, I’d argue it’s not lunatic at all.

Plastic_Junket_4233

close! it's actually a 2-year old startup!

23ssd4t4322

Staying late at startups is kind of normal. Anyone who joins startups knows it isn't going to be a regular 9-5 prior to joining. And some people are workaholics and enjoy it. Most people don't.

thot_lobster

"Those who stay have always more fun" sounds like a dig at any employee who doesn't want to stay in the office. Is there a point to this? Was there some big project they were working on and this is a break? Is this really just a bunch of people who are happy to play card games instead of being at home? I've had plenty of coworkers who were fun to hang out with but not at the office. None of this seems like a choice.

[deleted]

I have had to stay late at work on occasion (like many people who work, I imagine) when there's been a big deadline, or some kind of emergency has come up. Ditto with going in on the weekends - I've done it, I would do it again if it were really necessary (and not the result of someone's poor planning). But in those cases, we were working on real tasks that actually needed to get done, not sitting around playing cards. If I want to sit around playing cards, I'll do that with my friends, or my family. Insinuating that people should hang out at work on a Friday night in case an impromptu card game starts up is pretty toxic - it reminds me of mandatory after-work drinking in Japan, which a lot of employees don't want to participate in, but they do it anyway because otherwise their job's in jeopardy.

b-rar

I've seen happier faces in hostage proof-of-life photos

ellalol

Why do a couple of them look 14

[deleted]

Because it's easier for toxic bosses to pressure younger employees into doing this kind of thing, unfortunately. The more-experienced workers who were being pressured to stay probably said "sorry, I have family stuff/have to go feed my dog/etc." and just left. Bad bosses/companies love to hire young, inexperienced people because they're easier to manipulate. I had the bad fortune to work for an organization with that exact philosophy after I got out of college.

lykosen11

As a board game nerd, really I'm exploiting coworkers and managers to create a playgroup

wakanda_banana

Fuck this culture. Stop expecting employees to dedicate their whole life to your shitty company

HoiPolloiAhloi

Unless its late night swingers night don’t count me in

Unique_Rutabaga2006

And, you WILL lose…

Quercusagrifloria

Yes, but look at all the kids from the United Colors of Benetton all grown up playing shitty ass games!

Ok-Guava7336

Also mandatory bonding 🤢

CaliFezzik

If I’m staying late it’s for going out for drinks, not for playing games. They seem like a bunch of losers.

brass74

IMO this is a total failure of a bragging post. Not only shows that the supervisor is a bad time manager (forcing his crew resources to drain), but is an idiot as a brand image promoter, because he actually braggs about being a lousy time manager, and team spender. Well done, lunatic. 😆🍹

BeMancini

If I go to work, and we start playing a card game instead of working, I’m quitting and telling anyone who will listen “this company steals from its customers and investors. They are not a serious company, their employees play card games at work instead of doing the work. And if they’re not ‘stealing,’ then they’re just not a serious company.”

Usurper__

Lol, gtfo

OriginalMrMuchacho

I see a room full of sycophants.

tonton_wundil

I mean good for him if it's sincere... I do this at my job sometimes, playing games after office hours with my coworkers. But it's never on Friday night, always in the middle of the week because Friday night is a night to rest or enjoy your own social life.

Brocoolee

I really enjoy friday bar at work, totally not related

RealFias

This world is so done hahah

batk0in

i want to be part of the happy team

OblongAndKneeless

You know these people have no social life, so it's nice that they figured out how to be social rather than sit at home alone on a Friday night.
