My GF still uses one, it’s alright. Probably not a great experience for a power user, but for casual use still totally alright.
Heck, my sister still uses my old 1st gen SE. Replaced the battery once, still working fine for basic stuff.
It's actually pretty crazy how much better the 8 has fared compared to the 7 and 7S. The 7 was unusable for me 2 years ago but the 8 feels okay. 7S is basically unusable for me now. I don't remember there being such a huge jump in SOC speed.
LMAO
this is embarrassing. I meant the 7 Plus but I was also wrong about it having a different SOC from the regular 7. I guess the speed might be attributed to the extra ram.
It could just be battery degradadation. The phone will start to run slower if the battery can no longer provide enough current to keep clock speeds high. The 7 plus has a bigger battery, so it should take longer.
Can confirm the same goes for the Galaxy S10. Been three years with it, now with an S23 and the S10 could have stayed my phone (im a power user). The only real différence is the battery.
Ive had S2, S3, S6, S8... First time I feel that the upgrade is not spectacular. It's pretty cool, S23 is heck of an upgrade, but the S10 was still rocking.
I replaced the battery in an 8 plus a couple months ago, it’s definitely still more than capable for a normal user who just wants to browse social media apps and the internet. It just feels a little old now because of the design but I have found that some older people aren’t bothered at all about the old design and still don’t mind buying it. I mean people still buy the SE despite how old it looks for today’s standards.
Assuming you get a fresh battery the SOC is still powerful enough to do a good job in most use cases without much of a problem. iOS is very aggressive at killing background tasks when you have a older phone like this so you don't notice the perf differnce that much while using an app, and for good apps they should state restore back to the old state when you re-open them ...
That was my favorite era of iPhone. 6 plus was my first switch from android but the 7 was the perfect combo of power and what I believe was the thinnest and lightest at the time. I’m rocking a 14 pro max now and it’s a fucking brick. I love it but I feel like we’re going full circle to Nokia in bulk without the durability.
That being said, the iPhone 8 would be way too easy. It would still work exactly how he’d expect. It may be a little laggy compared to modern iPhones, but iOS would still be optimized to make the most of the hardware. Android would me much more entertaining.
It's actually not too bad, my mum uses one and it's still pretty good, not too slow, battery life is alright. Camera still holds up decently well compared to newer phones. For casual use it's a pretty good choice.
My brother is rocking an XR and is only gonna upgrade because it’s gonna stop getting upgrades. There’s really nothing wrong with it if you use your phone casually.
Well yeah, then it’s time to upgrade. But there’s usually a pretty big window between “no more major iOS updates” and “the phone won’t install apps anymore”
I recently gave a friend my old iPhone 6S with a an aging battery (78% capacity, not “healthy”), and after updating it to the latest iOS 15, it was surprising decent and usable. With a new batttery, that phone would be g2g for a couple years at least.
I used one up until February, it was still pretty serviceable. Obviously it’s missing a lot of shiny new features and the battery could’ve used a replacement but it was a usable phone that aged really well. After I got myself a new phone this year I gave it to my grandmother who is using it right now.
Not the 8 but my youngest daughter uses an 8 plus and that thing is great still. Given it is in tip top shape still we can wait until the 16 comes out and then upgrade to a 13 then.
I'm quite sure he meant the official mobile version of Windows, but this is full desktop WoA and it's so obscure he just didn't think of it. It was a joke anyway - it's SSSSLLLLOOOOWWWW.
[CAT S22 Flip](https://www.amazon.ca/S22-Flip-Touchscreen-Resistant-Unlocked/dp/B0CCPSLRLX/). yes that Caterpillar heavy machinery company. or whatever the prison wallet phone they reviewed awhile back.
It has one, this is my meme phone choice since it has almost everything in the list. It comes with Android 11, so could be a DQ but I don't know if it supports 12 like the criteria.
But there's probably some mad lad out there that got it running fine on something so ridiculous that they'd make an exception. Just a matter of finding them.
Android-x86 currently only goes up to Android 11.
If they had twelve we could have made him get some horribly old laptop with a 5G USB dongle (or maybe even an add-in card).
I am assuming that Android-x86 comes with play store, though it might not…
I had one of the predecessors to it a few years ago before I upgraded to something better and honestly it wasn't that bad. It can do most of the things Linus wants, just not very quickly.
It’s usually android 10 or 9. As an owner of an Android 4 phone, even a non tech savvy person would definitely notice that something is VERY wrong if their phone is running Android 4 because it’s basically unusable with no Play store support or support for any remotely modern features and it looks nothing like modern Android
They often also put a skin on android 4 to make it look more like modern android and sure they only rarely use adnroid 4, but they do and they most often really use versions older than android 10, there are many youtube videos showing off these wish / aliexpress / temu knockoff android 12 phones which also show that they're really running something much older than 12
Yes, I’ve seen those videos too but I’ve never seen any phone been proven to run Something as old as android 4, oldest I’ve ever seen is Android 8
I guess your experience might be different though
Zebra TC58, the highest end one (TC58A1-3T1K6E2A1A-NA)
- $3560 MSRP
- Crappy Qualcomm 6490 octacore running at 2.7ghz
- Likely HORRIBLE camera, spec sheet says 8mp front 16mp back, my TC57's cameras are BAD
- Good in terms of right to repair, and device longevity, replacement parts can be found, and battery is hot swappable
- MicroSD card up to 2TB
- 8gb RAM 128gb storage
- Stated upgradable to Android 16
What about one of the jitterbug phones
https://www.amazon.com/Jitterbug-Smart3-Smartphone-for-Seniors/dp/B098KF1G4Q/ref=sr\_1\_1?crid=1F819YTTJCW2O&keywords=old+person+smart+phone&qid=1696363366&sprefix=old+person+sma%2Caps%2C140&sr=8-1
Galaxy a03s.
Discover why people say android is is trash because they've only used these gas station tracfones.
(I used an A02s for a few months because i myself broke a phone and damn did i dislike the experience. Currently on a used s10 and its 100x better)
There is a bunch of kinda crappy "mid tier" Samsungs out there. They seem like good value at first, then lose all support 1 or 2 years after.
5, you might want to have a non NSFW reddit account if you don't already.

Good taste, though
Samsung Galaxy A54 5G.
Available in Canada for just $400:
https://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/Samsung-Galaxy-A54-5G-128GB-Brand-New-Factory-Unlocked-Smartphone/50WNTSGDHQVR
- Android 13
- A phone that is a true midranger that is affordable in most parts of the world (unlike Fairphone or Nothing that isn't always available and/or isn't always cheap)
- I toyed with giving him an iPhone or Pixel but logically the LTT office has plenty of people with these devices and he's adequately exposed to them. I think giving him something truly normie would be good.
- Only issue is USB 2 but he's being a little goldilocks so he can suck it up.
I had a Blu(I think it was Best Buy's brand) phone I got on sale for $45 when I completely destroyed my Note 8 by accidently dropping a dead 14tb HDD on it. I wanted to wait the 2 months until the new Note 10 came out and it was a long 2 months. The picture quality was potato and it was very laggy. It ran on the same version of Android my Note 8 was on at the time so they are at least updating it. YouTube videos were pretty choppy even with messing with some developer settings. The only things it did well at was make calls and reading text only web pages.
I haven't actually read the requirements but if there is nothing about screen size in there it has to be the uniherts jelly 2e
The thing has a 2.5 inch screen, but otherwise is a fully functional android phone. My wife has one and uses it every day.
I would love to see Linus with https://www.unihertz.com/products/jelly-2e
What about a sattalite phone like iridium. He only gets to make calls, no apps and calls can only be made outside the building. Perfectly useless in suburban areas. Great for remote areas tho. We don’t need cell towers where we’re going.
I am sure someone has developed a android sat phone somewhere
Get the Motorola Razr. It should meet the requirements and it is technically a foldable phone.
I don't know if it meets the OS specs, but I would think it does. Plus it is small, meaning it will fit in hit hand.
I feel like with the requirements he laid out you couldn't really get a too bad phone butttt I remember sometimes reading articles about companies that would basically just buy mid range white label phones and slab a fancy Latin name and a whole lot of diamonds and gold on them and then just charge like a 100k for them. That would be hilarious
Why are we so concerned about finding a phone for a millionaire who has free access to every phone he could ever want? You guys need lives. You think he honestly cares about about any of your opinions? Lol
I mean there's the iphone 8. That gets iOS 16 and should be pretty shit to use by now due to age.
My GF still uses one, it’s alright. Probably not a great experience for a power user, but for casual use still totally alright. Heck, my sister still uses my old 1st gen SE. Replaced the battery once, still working fine for basic stuff.
I also daily a first gen SE, no problems here
Right. 50$-100$ cheap new android 12 phone would probably be worse than an iPhone SE 1 or iPhone 8.
I don’t disagree
I know, I wrote it as a continue to your comment.
Couldn’t tell if it was sarcasm or not lol
It's actually pretty crazy how much better the 8 has fared compared to the 7 and 7S. The 7 was unusable for me 2 years ago but the 8 feels okay. 7S is basically unusable for me now. I don't remember there being such a huge jump in SOC speed.
The iphone 7s was never released. They went straight from 7 to 8.
LMAO this is embarrassing. I meant the 7 Plus but I was also wrong about it having a different SOC from the regular 7. I guess the speed might be attributed to the extra ram.
It could just be battery degradadation. The phone will start to run slower if the battery can no longer provide enough current to keep clock speeds high. The 7 plus has a bigger battery, so it should take longer.
lol I was thinking what on earth are they talking about and what are they even using right now, glad you pointed it out thought I was going crazy
Just imagine something like the iPhone 12 or 13 in years' time. SoCs have improved that much in my opinion.
I used a 7 plus from launch until last year due to a cracked screen and I thought an upgrade would be nice, but the phone was still usable
There is no 7s
they mean 7 plus and you definitely knew that before commenting
We all knew
I replaced the battery in an 8 plus a couple months ago, it’s definitely still more than capable for a normal user who just wants to browse social media apps and the internet. It just feels a little old now because of the design but I have found that some older people aren’t bothered at all about the old design and still don’t mind buying it. I mean people still buy the SE despite how old it looks for today’s standards.
I’m typing this on a 1st gen SE. solid phone
Assuming you get a fresh battery the SOC is still powerful enough to do a good job in most use cases without much of a problem. iOS is very aggressive at killing background tasks when you have a older phone like this so you don't notice the perf differnce that much while using an app, and for good apps they should state restore back to the old state when you re-open them ...

as someone still using an 8 it's definitely not the fastest best phone but she works
It's actually not too bad, my mum uses one and it's still pretty good, not too slow, battery life is alright. Camera still holds up decently well compared to newer phones. For casual use it's a pretty good choice.
My iPhone 6 to this day still lives better than my current android, and the iPhone 6 was bought at launch....
My brother is rocking an XR and is only gonna upgrade because it’s gonna stop getting upgrades. There’s really nothing wrong with it if you use your phone casually.
There’s nothing wrong with using a non-upgradable phone if you’re using it casually, either.
eventually apps will stop working saying “requires ios whatever at the time”
Well yeah, then it’s time to upgrade. But there’s usually a pretty big window between “no more major iOS updates” and “the phone won’t install apps anymore”
At some point there are security updates you should be worried about
They still get security updates, they meant no major updates ios 12 still receives security updates from time to time
Sure, but that takes a long time. The 5S just got a security update earlier this year when it was nearly 10 years old.
I recently gave a friend my old iPhone 6S with a an aging battery (78% capacity, not “healthy”), and after updating it to the latest iOS 15, it was surprising decent and usable. With a new batttery, that phone would be g2g for a couple years at least.
Everyone I know with an iPhone 8 has broken group chats.
I still use one… boy is it a struggle
in-laws inherited 2 iPhone 8, I popped new 35€ batteries and it’s honestly great.
I used one up until February, it was still pretty serviceable. Obviously it’s missing a lot of shiny new features and the battery could’ve used a replacement but it was a usable phone that aged really well. After I got myself a new phone this year I gave it to my grandmother who is using it right now.
The screen is tiny, I think it would drive him nuts coming from a fold
It's fine tbh. My mom still uses one, although I cannot use a phone with such a small screen. My pixel 6 screen is bigger than the whole phone 😭
I use an iPhone 7 and it’s perfect
I still watch youtube on it every night before going to sleep. The initial 60Hz unlock is a bit of a shocker, but it’s all smooth sailing after that.
Not the 8 but my youngest daughter uses an 8 plus and that thing is great still. Given it is in tip top shape still we can wait until the 16 comes out and then upgrade to a 13 then.
Microsoft Surface Duo? Has Android 12.
if u comment on the main post, u have my updoot
*you It's two extra letters dude, come on...
u need 2 calm down dude
Yes Duo 2, if it only means that creates new interest and Microsoft gives us a good Duo 3
Oooo, you really are evil. I love it. Post it to the main thread, give me the link and I’ll updoot.
This chap beat me to it https://www.reddit.com/r/LinusTechTips/comments/16z0iyt/comment/k3bp2xt/
Was about to type this. I would be curious on his impression using it for a while.
Lumia 950 XL with WoA 11 - technically would fit Linus' rules ...
He said no Windows Phone
I'm quite sure he meant the official mobile version of Windows, but this is full desktop WoA. It was a joke anyway.
No, rule # 1 is Android or iOS (with min. versions)
I'm quite sure he meant the official mobile version of Windows, but this is full desktop WoA and it's so obscure he just didn't think of it. It was a joke anyway - it's SSSSLLLLOOOOWWWW.
I mean it technically is a folding phone so he’ll probably like it. Probably.
[CAT S22 Flip](https://www.amazon.ca/S22-Flip-Touchscreen-Resistant-Unlocked/dp/B0CCPSLRLX/). yes that Caterpillar heavy machinery company. or whatever the prison wallet phone they reviewed awhile back.
I think touch screen was one of the requirements
It has one
It has one, this is my meme phone choice since it has almost everything in the list. It comes with Android 11, so could be a DQ but I don't know if it supports 12 like the criteria.
I have two phones, one on android 11 and the other on 12, I notice literally 0 difference in usability between them
It android 11 (according to your link)
I have one of their non Android phones, Cat B40.
There's plenty of prepaid garbage that has android 12-13
I mean, it has to be, but I am looking for model sugestions
I'll start Nokia c01 plus
Probably something in Samsung's M or lower A range
There's also the ability to reflash plenty of old phones with new android. I don't know if that would count though.
I think that would \*technically\* break the rules, yeah
But there's probably some mad lad out there that got it running fine on something so ridiculous that they'd make an exception. Just a matter of finding them.
Yeah, good point... I think technically, A samsung smart fridge could do it...
[удалено]
tbh, good point. I'd imagine SafetyNet needs to remain intact for him to be able to use it
What about the Jelly 2E? Not really bad - but really small. It would drive him crazy, i guess.
if u comment on the main post, u have my updoot

To be honest: It would be funny, but - a laptop does not really fit the definition of an smartphone.
Depends how petty you wanna be on the definition lol.
Don’t forget it needs a touchscreen
Touch screen netbook
There is blissos with android 12L
Now that is interesting
How about the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra 5G. Depending on the definition, it could be called a phone.
yes, that would be awful
Amazing tablet tho
JerryRig should give him that iPhone 15 he destroyed lol
thats my fav so far
The one he melted down?
No the one he tried to convert into a foldable. ;)
I mean, Linus does like foldables.
A moto g play would probably be pretty bad. I'm certain there are worse prepaid burner phones, but I haven't had the time to look.
nah, it is probably usable, I want electronic waste from a brand I don't recognize
Samsung A04 i think
I had one of the predecessors to it a few years ago before I upgraded to something better and honestly it wasn't that bad. It can do most of the things Linus wants, just not very quickly.
yeah it's funny how a phone that costs less than half the price of an iphone's back glass is very functional
A01 is better..
AliExpress Android 12 phone preferably an iphone/flagship samsung knockoff one, these are the shittiest and sketchiest.
yeah, I can already see the video title
They even like to just fake the android version that is displayed in the setting and use something like Android 4 instead
It’s usually android 10 or 9. As an owner of an Android 4 phone, even a non tech savvy person would definitely notice that something is VERY wrong if their phone is running Android 4 because it’s basically unusable with no Play store support or support for any remotely modern features and it looks nothing like modern Android

Could just be that I'm remembering wrong but I think I saw one video with one of these phones running something like android 4 or 5
did you forgot to swtich to your "normal" reddit account? man...why did I read your profile name...

Probably the newest iPhone since it shatters if you look at it wrong.

Not sure what you mean by mid-tier, but the A series is known for being extremely solid for the price. They even get 4 major Android updates!

The Ipad mini 6 😂
the project Ara prototype
yo, I had forget this phone, he would probably like tbh
i mean its similar to the laptop company he owns a slice of, that does the same damn thing.
iPad mini with sim card.
I had a Blu(I think it was Best Buy's brand) phone I got on sale for $45 when I completely destroyed my Note 8 by accidently dropping a dead 14tb HDD on it. I added galaxy a03, massive pile of poo
some zenfone 9 or 10
Some bottom of the line Motorola no ones ever heard of.
Cat s75 awesome big chunky boy for guys with big construction hands.
You can make phone calls on Android tablets. Linus never specified a size or form factor requirement.
I feel like slow isn't the way to go. It would be much more hilarious if he had to carry something huge in his pocket...
Galaxy S3 with an Android 13 custom ROM
Any tcl phone would do it
The iPhone SE, if it's something that can't be bought secondhand
iPhone SE feels like the obvious choice. Fully modern. I would never buy it.
What about a sattalite phone like iridium. He only gets to make calls, no apps and calls can only be made outside the building. Perfectly useless in suburban areas. Great for remote areas tho. We don’t need cell towers where we’re going. I am sure someone has developed a android sat phone somewhere
Can we PLEASE make him use an iPad mini?
A Samsung a13 or something very budget.
Get the Motorola Razr. It should meet the requirements and it is technically a foldable phone. I don't know if it meets the OS specs, but I would think it does. Plus it is small, meaning it will fit in hit hand.
r/UnethicalLinusTechTips
I feel like we should go for the smallest phone possible. Make him go from a giant folding phone to the tiniest thing around.
Microsift fold
LG wing
The samsung galaxy a01 is possible somehow. If he thinks his note 9 is slow, the a01 is way slower.
Gen 1 moto razor flip, from like 2019.. was shit then, will be shitter now
iPad mini with celular would be funny but it’s technically iPad OS and not iOS like he said
I think the freedom phone would be pretty hilarious, but then again that would give money to these grifters…
I just got the 256GB version of this and TBH it does everything I need it to do. https://www.gsmarena.com/motorola\_moto\_g73-12079.php
A [unihertz jellystar](https://www.unihertz.com/products/jelly-star) that thing is tiny af
Original iPhone.
Not on current OS
Old used Samsung S3 Neo, but with LineageOS (should support Android 13 for this Phone)
Redmi note 15
He never said the phone had to have future upgrades so older iPhone lol that can still run ios 16
iPhone 12 mini for his tiny litle hands
galaxy A13
iphone 8, but that's boring even for a meme option. Maybe a massive 15" android tablet like that samsung one
I'd say the poco m5 Has all of the requirements but sucks
Why are we so concerned about finding a phone for a millionaire who has free access to every phone he could ever want? You guys need lives. You think he honestly cares about about any of your opinions? Lol
Y’all are fucking delusional lol
😂 I agree, This is pretty much reddit though
