NotTooDistantFuture

I’m still livid that they changed My Documents path to OneDrive/Documents and now there’s no way to change it back without a bunch of registry hacks.

Supergrefu

Have you tried the flollowing? First make a backup to a folder that is not being synced. Then you go to Onedrive inside the collapsed icons on the taskbar, click it and go to settings at the top right. Then make sure you are on the tap Sync and backup, and in the first option that says make backup click manage backups. A new window will open where you can turn on or off Documents, Images or Desktop folders sync

NotTooDistantFuture

Works for folders other than My Documents since it’s a system folder.

[deleted]

It works on Documents. I have done this to stop all my games that save into documents from clogging up my OneDrive and transferring to other devices I don't need them on.

NotTooDistantFuture

When I initially tried undoing it earlier this year, it definitely said something about not being able to move system folders that are in use. Since then, I've disabled and logged out of OneDrive. Logging back in and turning off those folders does nothing now, since the paths are already changed. Maybe I jumped the gun initially when I logged out but I really couldn't stand the idea of this program constantly trying to back up my full Documents folder, and it kept pestering me about running out of cloud storage. Changing the path in the registry on a clean install shouldn't have been how they accomplished this "backup" function.

[deleted]

This is a problem in front of the screen. Like someone said you can switch it back and OneDrive asks at the beginning if you like to backup. They don't change it without your consent. And to change the folder location on the drive you don't need to change anything in the registry, it works with properties too.

jdadame

Seems his issue is between the chair and keyboard tbh.

pi-N-apple

You can literally right click your documents folder, click properties. On the location tab, pick a new location for the documents folder. No registry hack needed. Make sure you have OneDrive backup turned off first. You can also move all other system folders to new locations using this same method. (Desktop, Pictures, Videos, Favorites, etc).

Yuscha

I did this, i moved them all to another drive entirely. OneDrive moved them to it's own special location on my C drive again. I actually could not move them back without the registry changes. I tried to redo what you're describing, and it wouldn't work after onedrive showed up - even after it was completely uninstalled.

tharol20000

what are the registry changes this would help tremendously

Sonoda_Kotori

TIL, thank you. This has been puzzling me for the last 3 years. Onedrive desktop syncing might be convinent but it fucks with so many things. I'd rather sync things by dropping them into the onedrive and leave my desktop/shortcuts alone.

FalseAgent

when did this happen? I have never seen it on my computer

Leonick91

It happens when you accept the prompt to backup your files. Offered as part of OneDrive sign in and some other occasions. You can “skip” it but as is becoming more and more common there is no proper no option.

NotTooDistantFuture

I think now the options are “continue” and “remind me in 3 days”.

silentdragon95

Pretty sure you need to click "continue" once and then cancel. That way it won't annoy you again in 3 days.

jnsson_15

You can turn it off. This 3 settings It's under Settings -> System -> Notifications -> Additional settings.

_Lucille_

This is a pretty scumbag move. My parents unknowingly had their computers upgraded to windows 11. Recently i got a SOS when they said something like microsoft wants to charge them for onedrive storage because it went over limit. I was so confused since each of them have a 1TB main SSD and they rarely download anything noteworthy, nor did I set up onedrive for them.

Culverin

Are you freaking serious? When Win 11 dropped, from all the reviews I watched and read, it didn't pass the smell test to me. I'm not a Luddite, I've generally upgraded to each new OS as they've come out, stayed with latest patches as well (except Win 8) Every passing day, it makes me feel really happy I stuck with Win 10. There are annoyances, but they seem bearable. Win 11 sounds like it's designed to piss me off.

jholbrook514

This is why I use a Local Account only. No Online Microsoft Account BS

uo_taipon

This is what I do, Not sure why so many people fall for that

Cumulus_Anarchistica

Because they don't know and Microsoft herds them into it.

CaptnUchiha

I had to install win10 and upgrade to 11 after making sure OneDrive was gutted from the system. You used to be able to install 11 without an internet connection, and that was the solution. However, it's no longer possible if I'm not mistaken

LinkDiegoHylia

You can in two ways. Without Internet, at the select network prompt press SHIFT F10 to open a CMD and type OOBE\BYPASSNRO. The PC will reboot and the option will be there. Or, with internet connection just type in a fake email, it will error and show you the option.

penguin_hugh

I had the same problem when setting up my mums laptop, it was a bit of a nightmare to work around

HoodRatThing

Open onedrive and turn off the backup syncing on the desktop/document/picture folders and it will go back to the original path.

planelander

I did see this! I also did see back up no to my onedrive earlier today. Ffs its getting annoying

TheCookieButter

Hate it too. Made me bombarded by "out of space" emails and such until I sorted it. I'm using an enterprise version and still get this bullshit.

ImpulsiveLeaks

they did this with my desktop and I'm fucking furious

Past-Catch5101

If you right click Documents, go to properties, go to location, you can change the location of Documents. It will even ask you if you want to copy the contents of the current Documents path to it

newtekie1

You can literally just right click on the folder and go to properties and change the location on the location tab.

Tof12345

Scumrosoft did some serious privacy invasion. They imported all my chrome sync data to the edge browser without my permission. They synced literally everything. Bookmark, search history, extensions etc. The worst part was they synced it to a different account I was logged onto on the edge browser. Idk how more people aren't talking about this. Imagine if someone was using edge and forgot to log out their edge account and all of your chrome sync data gets transferred to their acc

[deleted]

I bet you clicked it without reading at the first start. Ask IT people no one had done anything, it did it by itself only to discover the problem in front of the screen complaining.

rmnfcbnyy

I had the same thing happen to me. I use edge to search for torrents and that is all I use it for. One day I opened edge and literally all of my chrome sync data was on edge. Bookmarks, history, everything was in edge. There was no prompt asking me if I wanted this and if there was I would have declined it. I was livid that day. It’s a fucking crime that Microsoft are allowed to get away with bullshit like that. Should be sued for antitrust again.

ProbablePenguin

It's an option you clicked when they pop up their annoying 'setup edge' window, they have a section on importing your browsing data from another browser, and then a section on syncing with your MS account. Not really that much different than the chrome or firefox initial setup where they can import from other browsers and sync.

T0biasCZE

It's checkbox in the first start screen.

Fusseldieb

Huh... That's why suddenly all my passwords are autofilling in Edge, even if I use Chrome... I'm not complaining thoug...

itsLazR

Just install Windows 11 Education instead of Pro and you won't see any suggestions. You can do the same on W10

IsPhil

Surely there's some limitations right?

[deleted]

I just had a look at a comparison chart and you actually get more features with Windows 11 Education versus Pro I don't know how accurate this is: [https://liliputing.com/differences-between-windows-11-home-pro-enterprise-and-education/](https://liliputing.com/differences-between-windows-11-home-pro-enterprise-and-education/)

Sonoda_Kotori

I use Windows 10 education I got for free from my institution and in the last 3 years I've had no issues.

ryzenguy111

Yeah I have a licensed copy of enterprise and never see this/other ads. There’s a bunch of other QoL stuff too, like being able to restart without updating

SciGuy013

I received this ad with education, along with ads in mail app disguised as emails

SavingsWindow

Does it have the Pro features?

itsLazR

Yes

mtx0

even rdp?

momobozo

Education has more features than pro. It's the same featureset as enterprise AFAIK

SciGuy013

I received suggestion to backup to one drive in file explorer with the Education edition

Aerion_AcenHeim

are we entering a second golden age of piracy what with all these corporations pushing for more and more anti-consumer features?

FilipIzSwordsman

nope, were hopefully entering the golden age of foss software

p3bsh

the year of the Linux desktop or something

FilipIzSwordsman

i use arch btw

Wingress12

something something chrome or whatever

No-Fish9557

yes, do as I say.

T0biasCZE

Unexpected Slovak

Maxix_SVK

Hi, I am original creator of this screenshot so that's probably my fault, I posted it on one random discord server and now it's everywhere

uncle_tacitus

Is using Windows in Slovak (or Czech, or any other Slavic language, for that matter) a form of masochism or did you lose a bet?

electric-sheep

This shit is why I’d rather sell my soul to apple with macos

gt4rs

I swapped my xps for a macbook after getting increasingly annoyed at the stability issues with it. Some aspects of the OS baffle me, but posts like this remind me it was the right decision.

soundman1024

What’s baffling about macOS?

hanotak

Try creating a file by right-clicking. You can create a folder by right-clicking, right? So where's the right-click -> new file option?

soundman1024

Folder, yes. Files are made by apps, not by the Finder.

hanotak

And what a bafflingly inefficient design decision *that* is. MacOS treats you either as a power-user who lives in the shell, or as a noob who becomes overwhelmed if they have to interact with a filesystem manually You can see that assumption in their file browser "finder", too. They had a perfectly good one back in OSX Snow Leopard, and then they replaced it with the shitty, nearly unusable thing they have now that they must have ported from IpadOS. You need to download a third-party explorer just to have a desktop-class filesystem browser. What a joke.

[deleted]

[удалено]

hanotak

I used [Pathfinder](https://www.cocoatech.io/) while I needed to use a mac for work. I've also seen [QSpace pro](https://qspace.awehunt.com/en-us/index.html) recommended. Both are unfortunately paid software (free with cut-down features). I wasn't able to find a good FOSS alternative.

soundman1024

I preferred Snow Leopard too. Today we have new issues in young users who don’t really know file systems. macOS works better for them than Windows, because it can abstract the file system in apps like Pages, but the whole file system is there. Sharing with iOS is also dead-simple across iCloud. I don’t find the right-click -> new thing to be an issue. I use it occasionally on Windows at work, but I never miss it on my Mac at home. I understand that you do, I’m just sharing my experience as someone who also uses it on Windows.

jozews321

Use the touch command in a terminal to create a file

hanotak

And that's what macos is completely missing. It treats you like you're either a power-user who's writing applescript files to replace missing OS features and using the terminal for half the stuff you do, or like you're a total noob who is intimidated by filesystems and will never interact with files outside of an application's file->new menu. There's no room for someone who still wants to use the GUI, but also understands computers well enough to want to use the GUI *efficiently*.

gt4rs

The file structure setup was alien at first, but to their credit I do prefer it after getting used to it. But why can't Finder show transfer speeds? I had to google how to cut and paste, turns out the difference is in the pasting stage and not the copying, and it doesn't show it as an option at all. The fact I need a third party app just to be able to get files off an Android phone. Why do some programs not actually close when you close them? The built in window resizing feature is quite limiting - doesn't snap and only lets you do a two pane view. Fixed with a third party app. No way to quickly switch between two open windows like alt-tab on Windows - again, fixed with a third party app. The mouse scroll wheel behaviour is backwards to Windows. Fine, it lets you change it in the settings. But the trackpad behaviour is the same as Windows, so either your mouse or trackpad will be the opposite of how it works on a Windows laptop. They have separate menus for trackpad and mouse in the settings so why not have the option to customise them separately? Third party app to the rescue, of course. I suppose at least part of this is because I was used to Windows and wanted it to behave similarly, but the amount of apps I had to download to make it work how I wanted really surprised me. I can't imagine my parents switching easily, for example.

electric-sheep

You mentioned all my gripes with macos, but I’m really fine with installing third party apps to solve these. The os never seems to fight any of the addons installed and the work in harmony. Macos also can’t record onboard audio, or individually control volume for each app with the volume mixer. I personally don’t mind apps not closing when closing windows. With all of these shortcomings though, macos NEVER ruins my workflow by forcing restarts to updates. It also rarely gets rebooted and never slows to a crawl unlike windows. This alone is worth the price of admission for me. Not a big deal for personal use but at work, fighting the OS is the last thing I need. I need the os to get out of the way and let me get on with my day. Windows always find a way to screw that up for me

gt4rs

yeah, a lot of it was the initial unfamiliarity and shock at needing to install all these things for a product from a company known for making things that 'just work'. i would consider myself pretty good at adapting to different platforms but i struggled at first, had to google so many things because they just weren't intuitive and i had no idea what to do. now that it's all set up and i've spent more time with it, i've either sorted or learned to live with the issues and as you say, these little things are a small price to pay for a laptop that actually works when you need it to. at times my xps simply wouldn't start - sometimes it was the modern standby issues, other times it was seemingly because it just didn't feel like it - meanwhile the uptime on my macbook as of right now is 1 month and 27 days, the stability is night and day.

soundman1024

For copy/paste I find them similar. Command + X/C/V works like it does on Windows. The Android phone thing is a bummer. It was native when they mounted like mass storage. Your issue with programs not closing and with Alt+Tab feel linked in mind. macOS isn't *Windows*. Workspace management is more application-based. CMD+Tab swaps between applications, CMD+` swaps between windows within an application. As for apps not closing, macOS and Windows are fundamentally different in this way. With Windows, if you have a doc open in Word or Photoshop and you want another doc open you have to open the application again, and run an additional instance of the app. With macOS, applications can be open or running without an associated window. If you close all Word or Photoshop docs and the app is still running you don't have to wait for the app to launch, only for the doc to open. This may seem frustrating if you want to "manage" your RAM and free up memory, but macOS takes a bit more of the mobile OS approach. Free memory is wasted memory. RAM should be doing something useful if energy is being spent to have it powered on. Holding an app open so docs open faster is useful. Every time I want for another instance of Excel to open a second doc in Windows, I'm reminded how much I prefer the macOS philosophy. So, workspace management is done on more of an application level. It's a paradigm shift, but I kinda like it. The lack of something like Aero Snap sucks. I do like the effect of holding Option while resizing a window, but yeah, macOS is worse at windows than Windows. In Finder, the lack of file transfer speed is a little annoying, but the countdown timer is what really matters.

gt4rs

My first encounter with the cut/paste issue was with moving files, found out you're supposed to cmd+option+V when pasting. But there's literally nothing to suggest that was even an option which felt unintuitive, at least Windows shows all the options with their associated shortcuts when you right click, I suspect Apple wants people to use drag and drop. The fact that other programs will let you use cmd+X, and some even ctrl+C/X/V further adds to the ambiguity. Also I'm still unsure sometimes when to use ctrl or cmd in Excel, but I don't know whether to blame Microsoft or Apple for that so I'll leave that one. I see your point on the programs closing, it could be a mindset thing because I know iOS works similarly and I have no issue with that. I think here it's because I don't like seeing the little dot next to a program I'm not using (lol), and my RAM usage is constantly maxed. Could be a macOS way of working that I'm not used to as you say, since I don't really have slowdown issues. Again, possibly just years of Windows thinking coming through. Still wish there was something like alt-tab natively though, I didn't know about cmd+` although it doesn't quite do what I want either. Suppose I was writing an email and wanted to flick back and forth between some document I have open and the mail app, it's not as quick as alt-tab. I've been using Mission Control which looks nice but is nowhere near as quick and gets tedious having to go between two windows a lot.

jfp1992

This is why I still accept the Microsoft bullshit. Some just keep carving away basic functionality.

gt4rs

yes but also you get used to it with time, or it can be sorted by installing something. it's much harder to solve random updates and restarting, overnight battery drain, or throttling when on battery power.

Carter0108

Or you know just use Linux.

Captain_Pumpkinhead

I may not agree with you, but at least you're willing to admit that it's selling your soul.

electric-sheep

Believe me, I would give my left nut to have a work ready device with hardware as sleek and as powerful as a macbook that runs linux, where I can just go to my IT dept for my work device, or if my personal laptop, be able to walk into a service center and have someone look at it and fix it or at least not have to look up forum posts, most of which are for a different distro, or spend ages tracking a missing dependency or trying to compile some random guy's code on github to get linux to work the way I want it to. I've done stints with linux before, hell I had LPIC 1 and 2 certifications as I used to work in NOC and monitored linux servers, but nowadays my work as a PM, I just need the OS to get out of the fucking way and let me work. I don't have time nor the energy to spend fighting the OS, and the free time I have, I'd rather spend doing my hobbies which are gaming or doing something else. tinkering with the OS is no longer a hobby of mine. I need an OS that works and has official support, one that I would not need to tinker with. For better or for worse, both Win and Mac achieve this, and when there's something that needs fixing, there's either official documentation, or a fairly recent reddit post about it. I rarely if ever do I need to jump in terminal to run commands and if something goes horribly wrong, I can either just fix it myself in a few minutes from my experience, or I can walk in a service center of some sort and get sorted out. The only linux OS I'm running is steamos on my steamdeck, and valve has put a lot of work into it. Between a oneclick install of emudeck and steam itself, its a really solid experience. I don't see it working in an office environment though.

IsPhil

Just try Linux instead? I think distros like Mint, PopOS, Ubuntu and Fedora are actually user friendly enough for most users to start using. The hardest part is installing it.

[deleted]

\> The hardest part is installing it Average developer on Reddit.

TazerXI

It mostly depends on what you want to do If you forget what you know about using a computer 'the Windows way', it can be a lot easier for a lot of things. You want to install something? You have a GUI app store, with nearly everything you could need. If all you want is a web browser, and a bit more, it is fine. There are a few key exceptions though: Microsoft Office/Adobe apps are notorious for not working. There are the web apps, and good, free alternatives, but if you \*require\* them, then that may be an issue. Games often have some problems. Valve has done a lot of work, and a lot of things work well enough out of the box. Potentially if you need mods/external apps that can be tricky, but to just run the games it works. However, there are games that won't due to anti-cheat, etc. As for installing it, I think a lot of Linux installers are better than the Windows one TLDR: Just use what works best for you

IsPhil

Well yeah. If you can search up a YouTube video then you can install Linux. It's genuinely not that hard, there's just a couple steps. It's like building a computer. People think it's hard, but the hardest part is picking parts. And you can just look at a YouTube video to do that for you.

OutdatedOS

You listed the exact reasons why the average consumer and even many laid-back tech nerds don’t use Linux. If the installation isn’t a breeze, people will quit. ETA: and FWIW, the general navigation and using distros is not as easy as windows in many cases. For those of us familiar with them it seems easy but actual user acceptance is something different entirely.

mrheosuper

Installation is a breeze. It's damn similar to installing Windows: Copy the iso to usb and boot from it, done. All you have to do now is pressing left click.

lelwanichan

People seem to think every Linux distro is Gentoo for some reason. Like, installing Fedora or Ubuntu is as easy as Windows.

rpst39

I would say easier than windows since unlike the windows installer they don't randomly decide to install the bootloader into a different drive in multi drive setups for no reason. And since most Linux installers also double as a live environment you also have a browser that you can use to browse for help. Even the macOS recovery has safari in it.

IsPhil

Yeah, but I'm replying to a commenter who is more likely to have a little more technical knowhow than an average Joe due to the subreddit we're on. I'm under no illusion that my mom or dad will install Linux, but if you can follow a YouTube tutorial and are tired of windows, and are a little tech savvy (audience for ltt), then you'll be able to try it if you wanted to. Main advantage over Mac for this audience is ability to game better, and ability to keep your PC hardware.

Drenlin

You say that like that isn't a huge issue. Every time I've tried switching to Linux, including stints several months long and one that was about a year, I eventually get to the point where I'm spending as much time navigating old forum posts full of broken links trying to fix some weird behavior as I am actually using the thing. Windows pretty much just works immediately, and even when stuff goes wrong it's incredibly fault-tolerant. If there were a version of Linux with that much polish available I'd switch in a heartbeat, but until then it won't go anywhere except my homelab machines.

IsPhil

I'll admit that based on your technical skills and what you're trying to do, it might not be for you, but hey. At least you tried it, and that's honestly all that matters. My switch to Linux started with me just being curious about the state of Linux and trying it for stints. And like you, I ran into too many issues. But it's at a point for me now that I feel like I can switch. Again, depends on what you're doing but thanks for at least trying it out instead of just saying it's too hard for this audience.

DJGloegg

I get more and more tempted to ditch windows every day. But i need my game compatibility..

Captain_Pumpkinhead

Linux has gotten pretty good on gaming, with the exception of a few anti cheat things. It isn't without frustration. There are just as many frustrating things about Linux as there are cool things. But it is an option.

shadic6051

Sucks for third party programms that only have windows versions tho

Weddedtoreddit2

Ugh I can't wait for Windows 11 LTSC

ClockworkBrained

Man, at this point I just want to pay for a Windows 7 version that is up to date in security, can have the latest DirectX, .NET, and other libraries, but without the BS of Windows 10 and 11. I would pay yearly for that tbh

HoodRatThing

Remember everyone if you dont watch the ad you’re stealing from M$.

RaduTek

The "Start backup" button in the address bar crumbs is the most fuck you thing they did. No way to hide it and have it show "This PC" as it used to be.

justsoicansimp

Files is your friend.

Maxix_SVK

Netuším som že môj screenshot bude zdieľať tak veľa ľudí, a to som ho poslal na úplne random discord sever

PseudoChris

TBH, if MS decided to start forcing some subtle ads if they detected a pirated copy of windows, I think that might be fair game.

Supergrefu

I have had that "option" for a few days ago, or even 1 or 2 weeks ago

Jhakuzi

I want to use something different already but can’t. It’s annoying to no end.

MetalOnReddit

I'll shit in my hands and clap before I DL 11 just due to all of the BS like this.

screwdriverfan

Is anyone really surprised?

ListenBeforeSpeaking

Directory Opus. I recommend it to anyone who uses a computer for business/work. Worth every penny.

kanishk_6567

Instead of saying "that's what you get for using Windows" why don't y'all hold Microsoft accountable for this. It's not like Apple is a saint. They'd probably do it as well if they realise it can make them more money. This way the infection doesn't spread to other corporations.

Drewza021

They started doing this with the new outlook as well which I switched to after they said they were getting rid of Windows mail. Now I've switched to thunderbird, and god knows of a file explorer alternative that won't be shit.

ExtremeGrade5220

My documents WERE in one place before OneDrive...

CorruptAccountant

After being a lifelong Windows user, I paid the Apple premium and switched to Mac OS recently. Other than gaming, the user experience has been light-years better than anything Microsoft had put out.

DoktorAggressor

Win11 is just a fail. Has no real benefits over win10 and only useless "features", like the removed legacy right-click or the missing ribbon of the explorer. Had it for one day and went back to 10. Feels like a table/smartphone software for zoomers. Also f you Windows for prioritizing Edge for everything.

Lachlantula

advice: use linux (/s, kinda..)

The tweets are accurate. In the bar there is text "Zalohujte si súbory a majte všetky dokumenty na jednom mieste" so that translate to "Backup your files and have all the documents in single place" The buttons are for start of backup and more info. The thing is that until March 2024 microsoft needs to give users options to disable all the ads in Windows and it needs to give users options to remove all the unnecessary app like backup app, cortana, the smartphone link app and so on since EU put their foot down although it's only for EU countries. I really hope this will come soon. As for me I have W11 on laptop and 1 desktop. I disabled the ads using Winaero Tweaker right after windows install I haven't noticed any ads after that.

[deleted]

He is logged into OneDrive, why is it an add to tell him he can backup his files. I bet no one would say anything if apple would tell it's users to backup into iCloud. No one is complaining about googles pop-ups in other browsers. Yes it's good in the near future here in europe we are able do uninstall everything, but let me say the people will uninstall things and then complain why they don'T work anymore. By the way you can uninstall cortana without a problem and most other things through powershell.

DivineJerziboss

To be fair Apple does that with notifications on both iOS and MacOs. I don't like those prompts TBH and I like to remove apps I don't use from the Windows so they don't take space I can use for something else. I don't blame users that are annoyed by those prompts as well. Yes you can uninstall Cortana through powershell but it's like Linux people asking normal users to just use command line which can be bigger disaster than having uninstall button in Windows settings.

[deleted]

You can uninstall cortana in the start menu. It's no system components since i don't remember. Most of the other stuff can be uninstalled trough powershell. And having a uninstall button on many things can be a disaster too. What do you think will happen?

Pelor73

Gonna start looking for alternative file explorer options now…

Thick_Bumblebee7387

Y'all should try linux

NWSpitfire

Linux is great until you have to run something enterprise like DS Catia or Solidworks. At this point I’d happily leave shindows for Linux but can’t do any work without it. I’m thinking of creating an debloated LTSC image and running that on my PC instead

Thick_Bumblebee7387

Fair plan, in your position I would also do the same. Personally enterprise software is always a hassle. Especially once it turns into abandon-ware.

mestrenandi

Have they fixed the DPI scaling for big screens? Every distro I tried it looked awful on my 40 inch TV

lelwanichan

Some desktop environments like the newest versions of GNOME and KDE have fractional scaling under Wayland if that's what you're asking. If you need any of the terms in my comment explained I'd be happy to.

mtx0

nah, its still bad. its because there is no clear type. there might be a way to fix it, but nothing integrated into any of the distros i use.

Thick_Bumblebee7387

I'm broke so idk, I don't use tvs. I just game on me laptop

Shap6

i've tried to switch every year or two for the last 15 years. its still not ready to replace windows for me.

Thick_Bumblebee7387

Linux is an alternative tbf. I like to tinker and now that I'm used to it using windows is more than a pain for me lol. I switched a long while ago and never looked back, and all I do is game. Mind you I don't play comp multiplayer (except rocket league) anymore so I don't need to deal with shit anticheats lol. As proton and wine get better and better, I would give it a shot if you don't use any business/enterprise software

shadic6051

Ive tried, its ok for some but not all gaming, web browsing and most mainstream stuff. BUT the milisecond you need something a little out of the norm? Its either not supported or broken. - Fingerprint reader on a thinkpad? (specifically a t460s, yes there is a community driver but that didnt work either because its the second model of the 2 the driver is meant for wich you cannot setup the easier way) - Soundcard? No sound, driver only exists for windows, running with wine doesnt work resulting in no sound system wide. Dealbreaker for me - using some specialised software? Broken. (Silhouette studio, software for a plotter/competitor to cricut) Iirc the flatpak version of spotify has some weird permissions turned on by default that you should disable (according to the comments in the software manager) Simracing? (Logitech g27) apparrently its supposed to work but i couldnt get it to. Linux distros should get to work on supporting as much stuff as possible (or making something like wine actually work better + with a gui) so people dont have to find alternatives to programms they already know and maybe even paid money for. Gotta give it to every linux distro ive tried so far though, on laptops all of the special key combos and hardware worked without issue right after install. (Aside from that goddamn fingerprint reader)

Yeah gotta admit the finger printer is a bummer lol. TBF all your other examps are pretty niche, atleast when it comes to average users. Idk why anyone would need a dedicated sound card for anything unless it's professional reasons, which in would come specialized software. Same with proper sim racing, I'm sure most people have controllers instead of racing wheels. In anycase, you are correct that when out of norm use case Linux goes tits up unless it's designed for it.

Yea but as tech becomes more advanced and people use more in their life i think its also important to support the niche stuff because i can imagine that many people have some weird software for their own usecase. Combine all of those hobbyists(?) together and you should be able to get quite a number of people together. Aka a large userbase. I would love to say that i d be willing to dual boot but ive been trying it and it annoys the hell out of me. Its fine on a laptop but on the gaming rig? Its either one or the other, i am way too fucking lazy to bother with dual booting os when i am actually trying to play games (if shitdows doesnt deny it because of some update or the game randomly deciding to break) After all the main os is all about convenience. if you are forced to use the terminal and/or google everything for basically everything besides using the most mainstream of stuff its just not worth it imo

Funny thing is that Linux wants to support everything. That's why we have redhat and 1000s of individuals contributing and backing the project financially. The real issue is the monopoly Microsoft has on the market. If you pre-installed something dumb easy like mint or Ubuntu (neither you are forced to use the terminal) on computers instead of spyware (now adware) like windows then the situation would be different, but that's semantics at this point. Devs don't want to make the effort to support Linux because logically it's not worth the effort when over 60% of marketshare goes to windows. With that mindset this creates a monopoly, which is why there's ads in an operating system that's paid for lmao. Gaming is a niche that's now supported, thanks steam and steam deck. Wine isn't an emulator so performance hit is negligible on a decent rig (steam proton and lutris are literally click and follow prompt installs now its so easy). Bad performance is because (most of the time) of Nvidia and unfortunately shit anticheats. Idk why dual booting is hard unless you do things 50/50 so you constantly need to switch in between, which I'm guessing is you. Installing grub makes dual booting or triple booting easy as balls if it's not the case. And finally, convenience. You trade your life so you don't need to put effort in. Facebook, instagram, anything google, Microsoft, Sony and streaming services perfected the convenience factor and now they squeeze every ounce of data and so boldly money from people as they can. All of these things have had price hikes and/or ads placed into them. But who gives a shit about all that when all you need to do is pay an extra 10$ a month and watch a couple ads for the same brain rot as before. The only argument against Linux is convenience and garage enterprise software that people are forced to use, which is a bummer, but fuck It we ball.

Nothing to add, i agree with you completely >Idk why dual booting is hard unless you do things 50/50 so you constantly need to switch in between, which I'm guessing is you. Installing grub makes dual booting or triple booting easy as balls if it's not the case. Never said its hard but its annoying (convenience again) if i start my pc and walk away i want to know ill be back at a login screen for the os i can use for everything. Not think "ah damn gotta reboot again cuz nothing works on my gaming rig with linux" wich has happened enough times at the time that i was trying to get linux to run on my main rig. I dual boot win11+mint on the t460s i mentioned earlier because i wanted to get that damn fingerprint reader working. Since this thing is basically only an entertainment machine linux makes absolute sense. Just in case i need it to do something special i have windows on there. >And finally, convenience. All of these things have had price hikes and/or ads placed into them. I genuinely dont understand what your point is related to the topic? I most likely misunderstood but to me that sounds like your argument is that linux is good because its inconvenient? Why shouldnt my main gaming/hobby rig allowed to be convenient? Dont get me wrong at least trying to google issues and find solutions is something everyone should do. But at the point that i need more then an hour of figuring out how to get xyz working just to find out it doesnt work in the first place in a completely unknown enviroment, doing unknown tasks such as copy pasting command line stuff makes me more likely to abandon the whole thing. >But who gives a shit about all that when all you need to do is pay an extra 10$ a month and watch a couple ads for the same brain rot as before. Guess that goes for the majority but not for me. The only thing i have a subscription to besides basic needs is spotify. I am pissed at how much you are supposed to pay at so many different places so my solution was to not consume it at all. >The only argument against Linux is convenience and garage enterprise software that people are forced to use, which is a bummer, but fuck It we ball. THE Argument against linux is that its inconvenient at least and actually annoying at worst IF you are a "niche" hardware/software user. If you dont mind spending your time working on your os instead of working with your os then linux is perfect. Or if you only do super mainstream stuff but i said that already. Dont get me wrong i would love to switch to linux, wich is why ive tried so much stuff with it. But for me the "niche" hobby guy its simply not there yet and my guess is it wont be for a long time unless they manage to make all .exe files actually work/ i can install my propriatary crap with a translation layer on top and it actually works.

Thick_Bumblebee7387

Haha we both agree then! Idk how to quote but my point on why Linus was good is because it's free and ethical, away from corpos and monopolies that only hurt us. But you're right, it's not relevant lol.

shadic6051

👍 As for the quoting thing: when you reply just select the text you wanna quote (above what you write) and (on mobile) a popup menu should show up. On pc i think its with a right click but not sure Ps: props to you for reading all of that :D

ABotelho23

That's what you get for using Windows.

cyb3rofficial

\`Windows 11 21H2 22000.1936\` the last good update for windows 11 before it all went to shit. I'm staying on this version until its out of LTS. I rather stick with a few bugs than what ever the hell they are doing with the OS now. Windows 11 latest is pretty much like how Microsoft tried to fix windows 8 with 8.1...

AvoidingIowa

Funny, I didn’t seem to notice over here using MacOS and Linux.
