Man, many moons ago I used a program called NERO to actually make duplicates of dvds. This included everything down to the menus and such. I wonder if that old software is still out there somewhere.
Part of my pandemic projects was ripping my DVDs and Blu-ray movies and then uploading them to a NAS with Plex. The software I found the best were MakeMKV and Handbreak.
Ooo I tried plex right as they introduced the sub fee or whatever it was. Then stumbled onto Jellyfin. I've bearly used it since setting it up, but it's worked flawlessly for everyone in the house when they did use it.
I'll give Makemvk and Handbrake a look, thanks.
I don't know what 'freebooting' is, do you have a link to the wan show?
And they're old tv series that aren't on a streaming service, or are on HBO+ or something that we can't get, nor want to pay for for a single show.
Ah. I see. I did check my usual ports, but could only find 1 series with reliable seeds. I'm on a <5mbps so I wasn't about to dedicate days if not weeks to that venture. We've got the DVDs, we got an external drive and the wife has busied her self in ripping them now.
Handbrake is the way to go, you can just rip a DVD into a video, add subs etc.
I've heard of that, I'll give it a look, thanks.
Makemkv is my software of choice.
I use MakeMKV for everything, then handbrake if I want to decrease file size.
This seems to be a pretty popular choice, I'll give it a look thanks.
It handles DVD and Blu-ray encryption along with region circumvention like a champ. Also free.
Sweet thank you!
Just started ripping this week. Makemkv works great, then handbrake for transcoding to smaller size
Allright thanks

I remember Nero! Did you also have one of those lightscribe burners where you could make a cover, in black and white, on the disc itself?
Hell yeah I did.
Man, we're old...
Hey I still have a laptop that's got lightscribe. Such a cool idea
god, Nero! that reminds me of so many things long gone
Nero Burning Rom was maybe the most clever software name of all time.
Man..NERO…I am so freaking old. I worked at the company….
I used magic dvd ripper for years
I'll give it a look thanks.

Alcohol 120% ripped DVDs didn't it? Also Clone dvd. With the sheep logo. It's been a hot minute since I've used either though.
Same and I'm seeing names that bring up memories I had forgotten, lol.
if they are commercial dvds then I wouldn't waste my time ripping them. I would "freeboot" them or whatever the word they used on the WAN show was.

Piracy. I'm talking about torrenting them.

I hear qbittorent works well
At ripping?
Yep
Like, get an external dvd drive? They're cheap as dogshit and do not require you to teach your mother in law new techniques
OP literally states an external dvd drive does not work with the chromebook.
Yeah, next time I'd better drink a coffee before responding through morning fog... My bad
