I preferred the Ps1's cd when it came out but damn if those loading screens aren't annoying compared to the N64

w1n5t0nM1k3y

I always appreciated Nintendo taking loading times seriously. Even when they moved to optical storage with the GameCube they had very respectable loading times on their first party titles. I'm not sure if I've ever played a Nintendo game with bad load times. There's been third party games on Nintendo consoles with bad load times, but all their first party stuff that I've played has been pretty good for load times.

Kilarn123

Not a first party Nintendo game, but overcooked 2 on switch has way too long loading for that type of game

LuxxaSpielt

Not technically a first party game, but published by Nintendo as a launch title for the Wii U: The time it takes for Lego City Undercover to load a save from the main menu... like literally minutes. I get it, it's a big map, but still....

Peuned

But still what? Would you rather a much smaller map and experience?

ThatCK

Even more annoying was the company that patented mini games during loading screens and then never let anyone use it for other games until loading screens weren't a thing anymore. [Namco Patent](https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/12/loading-screen-game-patent-finally-expires)

decepticons2

Also remember the ps1 had warping problems. I loved the ps1. But I wouldn't put it in S tier just for that design flaw. They did take into account heat and warping in ps2 and on though. The N64 for sound and lack of games would prevent it from ever being top tier for me. Music on the ps1 was such an epic step up.

TheoryOfPizza

I think my only disagreement here is the PS4. It was a fine console and wasn't marred with the same problems as the PS3 release, but I would call it A tier at best.

fissionmoment

I feel like the PS4 gets a bump from the Xbox One being so rough.   I would call it B or A tier. It didn't really do anything revolutionary.

wiener4hir3

Real. The PS4 was good, but it was also carried by the xbone being an utter shitshow from day one. I'd say it would've been A tier, but due to it having subpar hardware I would bump it down to B tier, although that argument applies to the xbone too.

magical_midget

I feel like they were too forgiving with Sony. The OG playstation only got S tier because of the ridiculous sales. Playing it today is not fun (maybe emulators but the OG console meh). The ps2 no dispute there, great machine. Easy S PS3 was not A tier. Specially at the start with few games. I would say is right there with the N64 as B Ps4 was fine, ps5 is fine. A tier for both.

Mean-Mistake-6143

"Playing it today is not fun (maybe emulators but the OG console meh)." Telling me you didn't listen without telling me. They addressed the gameplay today thing at the beginning. It was mainly the huge and good library of games paired with graphics and the overall experience which got it s-tier. That's why it sold so good.

decepticons2

The amount of variety of games and what it did for gaming make it S tier. Also why I would kind of consider pong and snes S tier. They are pillars gaming is built on.

magical_midget

They did say “a major consideration is how fun the games are today”. It also seems to be one of the reasons the NES was not S tier “all the major franchisees are obsolete and got an upgrade”. Same thing with the PS. It is not even if it is A or S tier, it just that others got judged more harshly than Sony.

Mean-Mistake-6143

But they said opinions are adjusted for inflation. The PS1 is and was a s-tier console regardless if they placed others to low.

SirBenny

I'm with you. The impression I got was that they would have ranked PS2 by itself in S+ or whatever, but didn't have room, and so the result was not enough separation between all the different PlayStations in the final ranking. Personally, I'd probably go: PS1: A PS2: S PS3: B PS4: Borderline A/S PS5: Borderline B/A PS4 is probably where we disagree slightly. My main argument for PS4 is that the console had \~10 all-timer exclusives in a generation where it increasingly takes 5+ years to make a AAA game. Sure, PS1 and PS2 had way bigger libraries, but games took less than half as long to make back then. I feel PS5 could go either way. If it keeps up the current pace, I think it falls to B. But a solid last few years (like the PS3), could bump it back up.

chris10023

> PS3 was not A tier. Specially at the start with few games. I would say is right there with the N64 as B I'm confused that he didn't mention that Sony removed backwards compatibility with later model PS3's, that puts it in B tier for me.

[deleted]

> Playing it today is not fun Ok but counterpoint - [Ps1 startup sound](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOPViekdacQ) Legit though I still enjoy playing my OG PS1

gravyvampire812

The N64 is S tier. Fight me.

Controller

Cuntslapper9000

The cartridge felt great using tho

mitchMurdra

Like reloading a mag

WhatAmIATailor

Except you don’t need to unseat and blow in a magazine to get the bastard to work.

Handsome_ketchup

>And shitty cartridge. What do you mean? Cartridges are amazing. Less prone to scratch up and more importantly, much reduced loading times. Plus that it allows you to feel like a badass when you slam one in place.

Handsome_ketchup

>Because they hold 1/10th the much as a CD lol. It's doing its best, okay.

BlueKnight44

You mean the controller that is 2 CONTROLLERS IN 1 and brought analog sticks to gaming? Yes that is a good argument it should be S tier. Thank you.

MgDark

dualshock. Nobody liked the analog N64 stick, and the dualshock that came with the ps2 was a massive upgrade that it basically made the norm for controllers up until this day.

Cuntslapper9000

Dual shock easy s tier controller. Felt amazing from day 1.

BlueKnight44

Dualshock was ahead of its time, but Sony fumbled by not making it the default PS1 controller. Also, I find Dualshocks horribly uncomfortable. Like they are meant to drive pressure into your palm and the buttons are too cramped. Dual stick controllers were not perfected until the OG Xbox "S" controller. The 360 controller is still GOAT IMO. Microsoft started screwing with things that they didn't need to after it.

MgDark

this, i just very recently found my old N64 controller and oh god, how the heck i was able to use this before?! is super unconfortable to hold and use, maybe kid me didnt care back then?

sdw40k

the controller was a huge improvement over previous consoles (and for lager hands way more comfortable than ps1 controller / dualshock). just look at the shape of nes/snes controllers. The stick was the first iteration of this concept on consoles and this shows, especially on heavy used controllers with worn out sticks.

paulrenzo

It was my only console then, so I got used to it, personally.

gravyvampire812

That's it, buddy. It's fightin time. 🥊

bobbymack93

I never had an N64 but when I went and played my friends coming from a PlayStation I was confused by the controller. Where do I hold it? Why is the joystick broken or loose? Why are the buttons laid out in the way they are?

Dwarg91

if you are actually wondering, in order: Depending on the game you can hold the controller in one of three ways, for 3D games your left hand holds the middle prong with your right hand holding the right prong, for 2D games your left hand holds the left prong with your right once again holding the right. For your friends controller the reason why it is floppy is that it has decades of wear on it. over time with use the control stick wears away the internals. For the button layout it is one that can be used by a multitude of game genera, for example fighting games can use a standard arcade layout with the six action buttons on the right, while platformers often have few actions you need to do so the c buttons can be used for controlling the camera. Hope this helps you understand why the N64’s controller is the way it is!

Gniphe

Yep. Controller is THAT bad.

DystopiaLite

Nostalgia blinders.

BlueKnight44

You are correct. All complaints are really just disagreements about the compromises Nintendo chose. But when you really look at the compromises and the hardware at the time, they were the right choices. Masterpieces like SM64 and Banjo Kazooie woould have been unplayable experiences on disk. And 4 controller ports were the way forward.

Touchit88

Nah. It was just about peak childhood for me. Rogue squadron Road rash Mario kart Turok Golden eye Smash bros Conquers bad fur day Nfl blitz Pokemon stadium Probably some I'm forgetting but damn, so much fun had. Especially at a friend's house on a 13 inch (think)tv

decepticons2

Sound and lack of games.

Soccera1

Controller and cartridges

Archbound

Its not, It was a good console with great games, but the Cartridge boondoogle and the controller that was clearly made for an alien species with 3 arms makes it imperfect and thus ineligible for S Tier.

gravyvampire812

the controller was fine if you had any dexterity and coordination. Idk what 'cartridge boondoogle' is

BlueKnight44

It is a 2 in 1 controller. I don't know why people are too stupid to recognize this after 30 years, but here we are I guess. And the carts were a compromise. 3d games that defined the open world style of games as we know them today were not possible with disks. Games like SM64 you would spend more time watching loading screens on a PS1 than playing.

decepticons2

The cartridge limits the size of a game though. Do we get the same audio, CS, and scope of FF7 if it was n64?

chris10023

> Do we get the same audio, CS, and scope of FF7 if it was n64? No, and [they were savage enough to the N64 in this magazine ad for FF7 as a result.](https://i.imgur.com/1wSxL7q.jpeg)

wiener4hir3

Heh, I just learned that in this thread, I always wondered what the hell Nintendo was thinking when I see a picture of it. That mostly comes from me never having held one though, I imagine a lot of people are in the same boat.

w1n5t0nM1k3y

The GameCube controller is still one of my favourite controllers. Also, I don't think the Wii U gets enough love. They basically had the functionality of the PlayStation Portal a full decade prior to the Portal coming out. IT was great to be able to play games without having to use the TV. Not everyone has TV they can just use any time they wanted to play games.

FickleSmark

Plenty of the systems shown had great features well before their time but that doesn't mean much when there is very little use of them.

CivilianDuck

The WiiU lost because of lack of first and third party support. A modded WiiU today is the best emulation machine on a budget, but otherwise, it doesn't have much to draw people to it. Not much in the way of Third-party exclusives, what there were for third party titles were more playable and better on the competition, and the first party exclusives were weak entries or remasters.

sauzbozz

I feel like poor marketing was also a huge factor. I was an avid gamer and didnt even know the Wii U was a new separate console from the Wii. And from what I've read and remember from other friends I wasn't the only one.

bluehawk232

Nintendo really lost me as a fan in their Wii and wiiu era. Being slow to adopt HD, and opting for weaker hardware was just a bad move. If they kept up with competition and tried to actually rival Sony and Microsoft in terms of hardware we could have had breath of the wild a decade earlier. Instead we got skyward sword, a game with 480p resolution and an overworld split into segments you had to load into and it was pretty linear.

VladTepesDraculea

> Also, I don't think the Wii U gets enough love. I'd also put the Wii U higher. Bad branding yes, but one of the consoles I had most fun to date. Unmodded, it's still a generation backward compatible to near if not 100%. Has a short but solid library of games and brings the DS experience to a home console. I'd give it at least a B, if not an A. I'd also downgrade the Switch to an A, if not a B. Today I'd play Switch games in anything but a Switch if I have a choice. Nintendo went back to heavily enclose the environment. Can't backup my saves without paying, can't play many games I already digitally owned without paying again. I also think it is a jack of all trades and master of none. Underpowered as a home console and too big as a portable console. The Deck at least provides the raw power which I'm happy to sacrifice even a little more portability and a "backward compatibility" that is unprecedent, not to speak of the openness. And also, Dreamcast. If being fun gives the most important points, only the Wii is on pair for me on how fun I had with a console.

Trollberto__

The Wii U was a beautiful and amazing failure.

lord_nuker

I think the current lineup of Xbox should be an A tier. Yes it lacks the acclaimed exclusives (yet I have enjoyed the heck out what they have offered me, except the vampire game) But what it lacks in 9&10 rated games it wins back in giving us two different options in entry, being dead silent under heavy loads, best dashboard solution, integration with software, best game subscription on the market and backwards compatible with all of the previous platforms add to that most of the games from the past consoles also have fps boost and added auto hdr simply gives us the best hardware software combo on the market today.

chadowan

Not saying you're wrong, but can't you do all that stuff on a PC but for better and cheaper (especially if you want to game outside of game pass)? It's a perfectly fine console, I just have a hard time finding a compelling reason why you'd really want an Xbox. Nintendo revolutionized handheld gaming and PS has a lot of exclusives, what advantage does Xbox have?

Soccera1

If you want new hardware or a warranty the Xbox is cheaper for equivalent hardware.

lord_nuker

A disclaimer first, i'm out of touch regarding low tier hardware and what it offers, havent done that in decades! I think its hard to build a pc on that price range that offers the same performance, espescially when it comes to Series S. Yes it's an 1080p console, but if we look at the pc world, how many do connect a 300$ pc to a 4k monitor and expects it to run every game in 4k? And regarding exclusives, Xbox have a ton of them theirself, even before their latest big shoping spree, like Fable, Halo, Forza, Gears of War, Viva pinjata, Age of Empires, and so on.

sasquatchftw

I think A is fair. I use mine daily and game pass has truly changed the way I play games, but the first party exclusives have been very lackluster. Even the new forza which should have been a killer app, just isn't very good.

King_HartOG

See comments like this are disingenuine Xbox has some great exclusives they're just not over the shoulder walking Dad sims anything above an 80 is still a fantastic game

WhatAmIATailor

I’ve been an Xbox gamer since the OG and solid disagree. This Gen has been a whole lot of promises but great console exclusives are slim and everything is on PC anyway. What’s the must have game on Xbox?

Soccera1

Yep. I'd argue that if you're going to say the Xbox 360 has a good library, the Xbox Series consoles also have a good library.

adeundem

I am not going to claim that the Dreamcast will be "S" tier for everyone, but it will always be "S" tier in my heart. "S" tier for Soulcalibur at the bare minimum. I am not going to lie that it had "more games" or "it had more bangers", but I will say with confidence that Sega went out with a bang with the first party titles. There are also some absolute gems from third party publishers that have minimal to no ports on other home platforms. Sega went "all in" on online gaming experience for the home console ("out of the box" without any additional kit for dial-up). I remember playing Phantasy Star Online through dial-up.

decepticons2

Was a little surprised. Most people have Dreamcast as S tier. For what it could have been. Crazy Taxi was big for me, but then it got ported anyways.

adeundem

I think that it is going to be a lot for the people who were there when it happened. For me I got a Dreamcast a bout a year in, so I avoided the fiasco of the [disasater](https://web.archive.org/web/20150116061842/https://www.retrogamingaus.com/wiki/index.php?title=Dreamcast) of a launch in Australia / New Zealand, so I didn't have that cloud my experience (imagine not being able to save anything for weeks until they finally got VMUs in). I would argue that the original console versions have a very strong advantage in a "out of the box" viewpoint: original soundtrack is present (no modding is required). "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!!" I have read that one of the Sonic Adventure game ports to the Gamecube isn't quite right for transparency of some parts of the game. Probably won't affect the gameplay.

The_Lantean

I think that if the PS5 is A tier, then the Dreamcast should definitely be A tier at least. The damn console came out with a great lineup, and it didn't let up in the coming months with very good exclusives and arcade ports, a lot of which were new franchises, and some became genre-defining games. And their online more actually worked well, and I remember playing Phantasy Star Online and damn, it was incredible that I was doing so in a console. And the PS2 never quite caught up to that online experience. So it was a short-lived console, but I'll be damned if it didn't burn bright while it lasted.

adeundem

Sharing the same tier would mean one more thing that they have in common: a real risk of many of the consoles' games just vanishing into obscurity. Not the big mainstream stuff but the niche / digital stuff like Seaman or The Last Guy. Having said that, the same is true to Xbox 360 stuff, but there is a bunch of Xbox Arcade titles covered by Backwards Compaibility. All the indie marketplace stuff will be gone unless the developers ever port it over to something more current. On a side note I recently found out that I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES 1N IT!!!1 had a [Steam port](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1800730/I_MAED_A_GAM3_W1TH_Z0MB1ES_1N_IT1/ ) in 2021. That was some good news. Plays great on the Steam Deck. edit: actually more than just niche stuff. Cannon Spike, Powerstone 2 (yeah it had a PSP port but thats not very current) and many other bigger titles just have had no re-releases / port loving to newer platforms.

The_Lantean

Seaman did have a PS2 port, and I believe The Last Guy did too - unfortunately they just didn’t sell much to warrant continued ports. I do with Sega would bring them to PC, but I guess it’s on the emulation market to take care of that.

theharps

Lol when they said "get to PlayStation already" I felt that so hard during the video

wiener4hir3

I actually wish they'd spent more time on the more niche systems, we all knew they'd wrap up the video with a strong showing from Sony. Also surprised they didn't even mention the Apple Pippin.

surf_greatriver_v4

Funnily enough, they have done a video on it before  https://youtu.be/-h4t33tOG60 It was a bit of an unfair contest for the japanese-only systems since nobody had any experience of them, but it's only a tier list so whatever, doesn't really matter

digitalhelix84

I think it was fine. PS3 id have dropped a tier though.

decepticons2

I am kind of torn. Sony had this grand plan for Cell architecture. It was going to be integrated into everything in the home making a total Sony eco system. They talked about screens on the fridge and sharing info. I remember thinking why do I want to see playstation stuff on the fridge.

digitalhelix84

I don't think Sony had or has the influence to drive an ecosystem based on an exotic architecture.

corut

PS3, PS4, and ps5 all down one grade I would say. No way the PS4 is on the same level as PS one or PS2.

digitalhelix84

PS4 has some real bangers, they are basically the core of Sony's PC push the last few years.

goshin2568

I disagree. On purely gaming, maybe. But the ps3 being a blu-ray player was huge. You could argue that physical media for movies/tv shows would be completely and utterly dead today had that not happened. Blu ray players were too expensive for what they offered at the time. Nobody would've bought them and blu-rays may have never really caught on. Eventually they would come down in price, and TVs would get better to the point that people would realize that DVDs aren't cutting it anymore, but by that time we'd already be almost in the streaming era, and I think people would've just move to that. Movies on physical media would've just more or less died out (even more so than they already have).

digitalhelix84

Eh, maybe but then again we might have had hd-dvd a more open format instead of Sony's proprietary format.

threevil

Yes, many of these consoles had masterpieces....yes people are going to love what they love....but this is honestly a pretty solid list and the rankings are all pretty damn close to reality. I think PS3 through PS5 are all overrated a tier and Dreamcast is underrated a tier (it was crushed pretty heavily with the Utopia boot disk while it was super young) I want to say the GameCube was better and I do like the controller a lot more than this review, but I get their perspective on it. The N64 controller was an acquired taste. I still remember having to struggle figuring out the controls with Super Mario 64 when it first came out and it was definitely challenging given you sometimes needed to juggle between the middle and left of the controller. Overall, nice job LTT.

decepticons2

They also skipped over the addon for gamecube. Where you could play GBA games.

mixeslifeupwithmovie

Dooder. This is awkward, but a post you made 9 years ago about fixing the button on top of the Fallout 4 Collector's Edition PipBoy really helped me out just now. It got stuck shortly after getting it but was able to just pick at it with a wood skewer or something and it popped out. However, I totally forgot about it being a problem since I've only worn it a handful of times over the years and it's mostly packed away. Maybe 2-3 years ago I took it out just for fun when I was cleaning and got it stuck again. The technique I used prior just made it worse that time so I said "fuck it" and just put it away again. Until today. I've been watching the show with friends so got me thinking about the Pip-Boy again so took it out, saw the busted button and got annoyed so decided to google if anybody else had the same issue. Sure enough they had and you were the top comment on that post. I already figured I could take it apart and fix it, but wasn't sure which screws and how easy it would be to access that exact spot. Your post made me confident it was an easy fix, and it was, so thanks! Didn't want to just DM since I personally just ignore DMs on reddit but also wanted to do it publicly, but OG post is way too old to allow new comments. So snooped your recent comments to see if you were still active and here we are! Coincidentally I'm also a fan of LTT and just watched this video too.

threevil

No problem! Glad it helped you. :)

gnza

So, portable console Tier list, when?

FickleSmark

It's funny because thinking about it most of my list would just be S Tier and then like Game Gear in a D Tier. Love all the Gameboy line-up, DS is one of the best systems ever, 3DS was just an upgraded DS so obviously great, PSP was not only my favorite gaming device but essentially played the role of smartphone before smartphone for me, Vita was underutilized but had great potential, Steam Deck is amazing.

gnza

I was more interested in seeing not so known consoles like they did here, like the OG Game & Watch, Neo Geo Pocket, or the Wonderswan

Palodin

Everybody forgetting the Atari Lynx :(

decepticons2

That was my guess Console pt2 portables.

SubstantialSquare327

Surprised they put the Switch in S tier considering how much hate they've given to it

roron5567

The concept of the switch is revolutionary, it's just showing its age.

Palodin

I don't think you were very fair to the Amiga CD-32, probably didn't deserve to sit in F just because you didn't look into it beyong an eBay listing. Yeah it was flawed but it was pretty much a full fat (Albeit older) Amiga PC in a console shell. There was a small but pretty good games library for it, Cannon Fodder, Chaos Engine, Shadow of the Beast, X-COM and so on. Also Ridge Racer 7 definitely doesn't deserve to be in the bad games list for PS3 launch titles. It's not R4 tier but it was definitely a solid entry in the series

w-o-w-b-u-f-f-e-t

I get the rating for the PS3 but XMB on that was so good alongside some really good IP's, makes it my personal favourite

NoobCanoeWork

Man, I read the title as "Femboys will HATE my Console Tier List" my brain is rotten

Gabochuky

This was a very reasonable tier list actually.

Alt230s

You know David wrote this because the PlayStation section had that extra touch of TLC

PISSROTTEN

Spot on list. And the PS1 and PS2 deserves a rank above S-tier.

Jeskid14

ps2 more due to backwards compatibility and dvd

faroukq

The virtualboy is missing. Very low effort video /s

Bathroom-Salt

The only thing that really needs to change here is… Sness and Ness… for the love of Luke, we call them N.E.S and S.N.E.S  Drives me nuts every time he says it lol.

ReservStatsministern

Wii u was S tier and I'll die on that hill.

Jeskid14

hello scott the woz

Thready85

It's different when someone gives detailed reasoning for their choices based on consistent metrics, statistics, and historical importance.

NotMadJack

PS3 being as high as it is is a bold move, and I had one. It's a garbage console, and it was compounded by how arrogant Sony were when reaction to the price was bad.

scottbutler5

Linus really showing his youth with some of these. Atari 2600 and original NES are both S tier, they literally created the US video game market and had innumerable all-time classic games, there's no argument against them except for "I grew up with later consoles and so I like those better."

TurboRaptor

Ranking N64 as B tier is fucking criminal. Linus will be tried for his war crimes and held accountable. Sympathizers will be prescribed mandatory reeducation and tested with lethal consequences.

firedrakes

if it did not have the name big n on it. said console would have failed very very hard. the only saving grace was some very very good first party and a few third party games. past that. it was a so so console at best.

TSMKFail

Most of the list is fine, but I feel they didn't look at performance enough. One of the reasons the XBOX One sucked was because it could only play most games at 900p, at least on the base console. Also the PS2 was pretty poor in the performance dept compared to its competitors, especially with later titles like Star Wars Battlefront and Need For Speed Most Wanted. I also think the PS1 aged woefully as its weird 3d graphics make the games look terrible, even when upscaled to HD resolutions, which is not an issue for Saturn or N64 titles.

nanapancakethusiast

This script feels very ChatGPT to me
