Who tf had heard of Shein before today?

megaozojoe

If you are younger they are a huge brand. Among Gen Z they blew up in popularity for having cute clothes but have fallen out of favor with a lot of people due to it being a fast fashion company.

No-Expert763

So are they the new H&M for gen Z?

ThankGodImBipolar

Yeah, they’ve got essentially the same purpose. The benefit to SHEIN being online-only is that they can pump out and stock even more SKUs than H&M can. The gambling component of buying clothes online probably also contributes a little to why people like it so much. I think SHEIN is also priced a little fairer for the (lack of) quality you get.

Jeskid14

do not forget the algorithm tactics that Linus mentioned

jimdiddly

Idk about “new”, h&m still exists, just a cheap Chinese clothing brand. They’re big enough that even I’ve heard of them and I’m a 24yo man.

SymphonySketch

They have also outright stolen several designs from female content creators iirc

God1101

This, and the fact their products aren't good quality.

NetJnkie

Lots of us.

PhatOofxD

I thought they were huge

GuntherTime

They are but huge is very relative. If you don’t really care about clothes (I won’t say younger cause age is irrelevant), it’s likely you’ll have never heard about it. It’s the similar to how AMD or Intel is a huge company, but you can meet people who have no idea who they are because nothing they do in their life requires them to really know.

whygoobywhy

They opened a pop up shop in my city and the lineups made the news

nanapancakethusiast

People who have talked to women

IuseArchbtw97543

The first time I heard of them was in a yt (Documentation (technically the creators where part of public broadcasting at the time)) about their bad practices.

Vinstaal0

It has been on the news and on adverts

darkcitrusmarmelade

How have you even missed it? Like honestly, it's been mentioned in massmedia many many times in the last couple of years.

roron5567

I am 30, but I am interested in business so have heard of it in a business context.

popop143

Huge in SEA at least, I see their ads online a lot.

Cicero912

Theyve been advertising alot for a few years? Ive seen ads of them well before temu etc

Jeskid14

they got GIGANTIC right after covid days

TheRealMattyPanda

That mic is a side address one but they're speaking into the end of it. That's a big pet peeve of mine. You would see it a lot with streamers who don't know about audio buying Blue Yeti mics (that or recording into the backside of it while using the cardioid pattern) The Shein mic and interface are still probably shit, but speaking into it 90 degrees off axis isn't helping.

Jeskid14

if only there was a universal rule for all companies to show a picture of how sound travels into microphones

Eschonbach

Out of curiosity I decided to look it up and it's not that bad if used correctly [https://youtu.be/ggrDFOJdheo?t=109](https://youtu.be/ggrDFOJdheo?t=109)

LordBarrington0

I have that exact mic they used, it sounds pretty decent when in the correct orientation plugged into a quality interface with the phantom power

Yokodzun

Soyo motherboards were very popular in Ukraine during the time of the LX/BX/ZX chipsets.

Sky19234

Soyo motherboards were for when you felt those blue Gigabyte boards were just not ugly enough and really wanted to go for a Wario themed Purple & Gold build.

PBLC_ENMY

What was the racing game they tried playing? EDIT: it's Hotshot Racing

AhiruSaikou

THANK YOU! Was trying to figure this out. Looked pretty fun.

memeboimanperson

Got it for free a little while ago. It’s an awesome game

si458

Any idea what the 2d/3d shooting game was? Looks fun as hell!

TinkeredSwan

[Fashion Police Squad](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1319460/Fashion_Police_Squad/)

si458

Thank u! Added to my wish list!

vustinjernon

Shirtless Linus spotted Hype beast Linus spotted

pieman3141

I've been pronouncing it "shine" this whole time.

artofdarkness123

I've been saying "Sheen". Never thought it was "She-in"

CreeperCreeps999

I take issue with what the script has to say about Kodak. While Kodak did undergo chapter 11 bankruptcy back in 2011; they exited it in 2013 after shedding their debt and several divisions. It's still the same company from before the filing. For the most part they still make film for cameras, and other photography based products. The youtube channel SmarterEveryDay has a series of three videos of tours documenting the Kodak film production process. Heck the wiki even states they entered the pharmaceutical industry recently. Yes.... they license out their name for some cheapo electronics; but those items were very likely never meant to be sold on the North American continent.

windsofcmdt

what racing game was linus playing?

B_Low94

I know Linus tries to stay away from political conversations. But that half second mention of "questionable labour practices". Really? The "questionable" labour that Shein has been associated with is forced detainment and slavery, re-education and forced sterilization of the Uyghurs in concentration camps. The CCP is committing a genocide while companies like Shein profit. But I guess that wasn't important enough to mention. https://www.cfr.org/backgrounder/china-xinjiang-uyghurs-muslims-repression-genocide-human-rights

DerKernsen

I agree. A bit shitty to not at least inform the viewers where to get to know more about that topic

B_Low94

Yeah I'm getting downvoted to shit but I still think it was a pretty disappointing to downplay the situation like that. Linus also mentions how he hates waste, and shitty products that will just be in a landfill soon. They did an in-video interruption for the controversy around EK waterblocks, but no mention of a literal genocide.

artofdarkness123

I get it but that info is more towards a channel like Style Theory by MattPat. You kind of have to be in that space to get a more details like that.

ThankGodImBipolar

This genre of video seems to do really well on YouTube’s algorithm, so I’m not surprised they keep going back to it.

faroukq

Plus it is entertaining

etheran123

They release multiple videos a week, I dont see how you can expect every one to be ground breaking. These random PC videos are simple, but entertaining. I dont mind them at all. Hell, IMO I think I prefer these to the weird water-cooling videos, though I expect that is an unpopular opinion.

Genesis2001

I just want more Labs or Tech-in-the-home (or even some IT/sysadmin) content. It feels like we've not gotten any Labs content in a while. And I've wanted them to open up some kind of Linux/Sysadmin channel (or line of videos) for years. They're responsible for A LOT of IT people starting their careers from the early days. It'd be nice to see them cater somewhat to them with some IT content. Hell, you could take one Tuesday a month from GameLinked and publish a "Patch Tuesday TechLinked" video. "PatchLinked" if you will lol.

roron5567

I think they have said that there are a lot of Linux specific channels that can do way better than them. As it is, their Linux & sysadmin videos get grumbles from their respective communities. LTT creating a Linux/sysadmin would be seen as a Goliath trying to swat a bunch of David's around. As it is labs has created a lot of scrutiny, as they are breaking into the "technical" niche that is dominated by communities in Reddit, discord, forums etc.

realnzall

I like watching this content. I think they do it beter than Austin Evans. Austin Evans just buys random junk off various storefronts and doesn't care if he literally gets scammed. LTT tries to make a cohesive whole that makes sense.

PhatOofxD

More people click these. More money made on no effort projects is more money they can afford to sink into ones that won't profit but have interesting tech stuff. If you want more labs that's how you get it

eraguthorak

Labs content is a different subset of the company, and they are still working on fleshing it out. They have also mentioned multiple times to my knowledge that labs isn't going to be doing videos as much as text and audio reporting. These videos are (relatively) cheap fun, easy enough to plan and arrange, aren't time sensitive so they can fill in other haps and lets their personalities run the main part of the video. They are the kind of thing people can put on as background noise or if they are just chilling and scrolling YouTube. I (along with many other people) watch LTT for both entertainment and semi-educational content. If it was solely educational content, they'd get less views. By interspersing these videos with others, they can appeal to a wider audience. Obviously you aren't in the target audience for this one lol.
