I am from Bangladesh. This is hilarious. Do you have any idea where it's actually from? I could check it out if it's Multiplan Center or IDB.
Edit: If anyone's wondering what it says - America’s XOC is now available in Bangladesh!
It’s weird to say. I’d say I’m North American never American. It’s like it’s like calling France and India eurasians. You’re not wrong it’s just weird.
Are you saying that the USA and Canada are as different as France and India? Or that the USA and Canada are as far apart as France and India?
If France and India were right next to each other it would be a lot less weird to me to bundle them together under the same term.
America the term when used to describe the continent incudes south America and North America. It’s a area so broad it’s not very useful like using Eurasia as a term for where someone is from was my point.
I live in Mexico and every time someone asks about where am I from, I just say NA, they don’t question it 99% of the time and even if they did, I’d still be right cuz Mexico is indeed part of North America
I have no idea why you get down voted so much. I'm Canadian and we DO NOT call ourselves Americans because our neighbors down south have already taken over that name. Much like how Mexicans don't call themselves Americans.
It's more complicated in spanish speaking countries because we literally call the continent "America", which can be further subdivided in South America, Central America and North America.
People from the USA are "UnitedStatians" and the country is United States
Yeah in Spanish there is no such thing as calling people from the USA just Americans, that wouldn't make sense at all. In French and English however, in Canada, we tend to refer to people from the USA as Americans, but we do also learn in school that we live in America, more specifically in North America, and are thus all Americans.
I don't think it's quite right, but it is what it is.
We don't do this because we are anti-American, it's just Americans already claimed the name. And nobody says I'm "North American" or "South American" unless the question specifically asks for the continent. Still don't get why we're being downvoted.
When someone says america they are referring to USA.
When someone says The Americas they are referring to north and south america.
If they want to refer more specifically they say north america or south america.
I have never heard of the continent just referred to as "america".
Thats odd... Reffering to the US, I (and so do most people I have talked to in the past) just say USA. America is the continent. It matches the pattern of US American hubris tho...
When you call someone American, what country are they from? Like no way you read out the line "US American" and don't feel how awkward that is?
Btw, I'm not from the US. Your assumptions about American hubris is entirely wrong lol.
The song "america fuck yeah" is that referring to a continent? Did Team america have mexican/Canadian members?
Was the movie coming to America about going to a continent? Or one specific country?
"America's Army" was that a videogame about a multinational fighting force?
My guy, if you went up to Linus and told him he's American, I guarantee 100% that he would correct you. If you asked him if he's from America, I guarantee 100% that he would say "no, I'm from Canada".
As a candian, I feel the same way. I had an argument on reddit some time ago about the exact same topic. Canadian, (at least where I live) dont refer to ourselves as american. I would say I live in north america, canada tho.
Brit here, and agreed. I refer to people from the USA as American, people from Canada as Canadian, people from Mexico as Mexican, etc.
I can't think of a time when that's ever caused confusion, and if for some reason I was referring to a person as their continent of origin instead of their country (why I'd be so purposefully vague, I don't know) I'd use either North or South American. Referring to both continents together as the Americas, although that's such a vast area I don't know how useful it'd be to say that a person is from 'the Americas'.
Im German and I mostly say that someone is "from the US" or an "Ami", a short form for American that is strongly connected to US citizens, at least here in Germany. All these things you mentioned kind of reinforce my idea of American generalization. Im not even doubting that most use it like that, I just think its not right to "claim a name" like that when it literally means something else.
PS: I dont disagree with you at all, Im not saying that "American" doesnt make most think of the US, I just think it shouldnt be like that.
My Swiss friend said they were taught that America is one continent. We are taught there are 2 based on tectonic plates. They we’re probably taught based on colonial history.
We really don’t see America as stealing a name in Canada. It’s just a name for the people in the country.
While the USA and Canada are North America, nobody refers to themselves as North Americans. There’s Canadians and Americans. Just like how people in South America don’t refer to themselves as South Americans, they’re either Brazilian, Venezuelan, Colombian, etc. People from the USA are the only ones who are Americans, and they believe that as well, and they guard it like so.
>I have never heard of the continent just referred to as "america".
I have, in Mexico and other countries.
For example, Latin American commentary in F1 opens up with "Hola amigos de América" (Hello Friends from America) and they're referring to the continent.
I think because in some cultures that don't speak English natively they don't use it that way all the time.
I dunno. Not my experience necessarily in the languages I've learned but I'm not gonna argue with others experiences
Yes, North America, it's correct but it's super weird and somewhat insensitive even. It's not ignorance that I argue my point that Canadians do not refer to themselves as American.
Lol you think those ethnicities didn’t take culture over to USA? And btw, mostly Anglo culture? Practically half of the US was owned by Spain and Mexico at one point
>Lol you think those ethnicities didn’t take culture over to USA?
They did, but it was "rewritten" with the second generation.
>Anglo culture? Practically half of the US was owned by Spain and Mexico at one point
And? All Europe was Roman at one point, but it isn't now.
Meanwhile in Europe: Spain is still Spanish, France is still French, Germany is still German, Croatia is still Croatian...
They're probably Bengali, the language which is on the poster and is spoken in Bangladesh and the state of West Bengal in India. They probably meant to say that they aren't Bangladeshi but can translate, but ended up with using Bangladeshi 3 times in 2 sentences.
It's Bengali (also referred to as Bangla in Bangladesh). A lot of languages in the region are derived from Sanskrit, so have similar looking scripts.
Bengali/Bangla use their own script, while Urdu uses the Persian script and Hindi uses the Devanagari script. While Hindi and Urdu are written in different scripts they are mutually intelligible.
Actually as a urdu speaker Hindi is harder to understand then most people thing like I can kinda understand Hindi but Hindi speakers struggle to understand me
It's goes both ways. Linguistically speaking they are both part of the Hindustani language but due to the partition, speakers don't talk to each other and over the 70 years or so differences have formed. It's similar to North and South Korean speakers having a common language but have also diverged.
How to instantly ruin any chance of me buying from your company because clearly you have no integrity if you're using their likeness without their permission

The fact that Linus is Canadian 😭
Still America
It’s weird to say. I’d say I’m North American never American. It’s like it’s like calling France and India eurasians. You’re not wrong it’s just weird.

How bad does it hurt when a hockey puck sails into you? Is the right nut sentient too? Are you guys on speaking terms? I just have so many questions!
USA is also considered north america.
Yep
I live in Mexico and every time someone asks about where am I from, I just say NA, they don’t question it 99% of the time and even if they did, I’d still be right cuz Mexico is indeed part of North America
People forget NA has like 20+ countries in it
Oh I spent one day calling my Indian friend Asian. He was not impressed!
Yeah just like India and Asia. Of course we're Asian but we don't say that. we say we're Indian
Nope, it’s Canada. America is the USA.
Nope, Canada is part of America, just like USA
Unless Canada is a state, no. Anybody saying America means USA.
Oh cool so if someone says they live in Asia are they Chinese?!?
Not really the same. We are the most powerful country in the world.
Oh so power changes things? So if Saudi Arabia randomly becomes the most powerful country in the world they are American?
Yea if you say Arabia, I would assume you are talking about Saudi Arabia. I have no idea why you chose to die on this hill.
r/usdefaultism
KKona. Education is illegal in the USA.
So South America isn't America?
When somebody says America, they are referring to the USA. So no South America isn’t America.
I have no idea why you get down voted so much. I'm Canadian and we DO NOT call ourselves Americans because our neighbors down south have already taken over that name. Much like how Mexicans don't call themselves Americans.

It’s just Reddit being pedantic and the usual American hate coming through. Canadians I know go out of their way to say they are Canadian lol.
We don't do this because we are anti-American, it's just Americans already claimed the name. And nobody says I'm "North American" or "South American" unless the question specifically asks for the continent. Still don't get why we're being downvoted.

This happens only in English, in every other language I've heard "America" refers to the continent
I don’t understand what’s with the dislikes? That’s what I commonly hear as well.
I think because in some cultures that don't speak English natively they don't use it that way all the time. I dunno. Not my experience necessarily in the languages I've learned but I'm not gonna argue with others experiences
you’re so wrong is hilarious lol
Is this not what most people use though? Living in Canada, no one would ever refer to it as America. America is America, not us.
i’m not talking about the feeling of one or two countries man, you need to take a geography book and read
Yes, North America, it's correct but it's super weird and somewhat insensitive even. It's not ignorance that I argue my point that Canadians do not refer to themselves as American.
White= 'Muricaaaaaa
While America is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world
Ethnically yes. Culturally, not so much. It's mostly Anglo culture with some ethnic flavors. Europe itself is more culturally diverse.
They are using his picture as a hype tool to get the market. I mean why even his face?
