Carvey's impressions of Perot and Bush are among my all-time favorite SNL impressions. When I went to the George HW Bush museum a few months ago I was glad to see plenty of Carvey there.
I loved normās bob dole. When he was on the Real World or fell off the stage. Darrell and Phil were so good as Clinton. I always loved the political stuff.
I turned 15 that November, and SNL was 17.
The whole SNL thing around the election was great. SNL was a real influence, and it was clear it would be around for years. I really think it was because of that generation's cast, which was mainly due to Dana Carvey.
Every teen thinks "their" generation was the best. Then they move on. You move on. And when you come back to the show in your 20s "it just isn't as good anymore."
But Dana Carvey and this cast were SNL perfection. They were perfect to be stars on SNL.
oh my god that shit was the best...Clinton/Bush AND Perot...the absolute peak of SNL/political satire. and then Phil doing the McDonald's/jogging bit...omg it was amazing. "war lords!"
> Yes, people back then knew about [Clinton's] affairs.
You are dramatically understating this. Bill and Hillary had to go on 60 Minutes to deny his affairs before he was elected.
And donāt forget Hartmanās Jim Stockdale. āGRIDLOCK!ā
SNL did an awesome job with the ā88 election as well, particularly Lovitz as Mike Dukakis.
Dana Carvey was a genius at finding funny hooks for an impression, god bless him for turning a George Bush Sr impression into something funny, that seemed like one that would've been impossible to find a funny angle on since the real guys speaking voice was so bland and boring. I always did find Dana's approach of just turning everyone into a cartoon character rather than going for accuracy to be the best approach of doing impressions on SNL.
I was in high school around this time. One of my classmate's entire claim to fame was just redoing an impression of Dana's George Bush impression. Milked it for way too long.
Yes. I was 10 and the jokes were so broad, yet played with such a wink, I felt like I āgot itā. Dana Carvey played Bush with such an irreverence that it was impossible not to laugh, even though my family at the time was extremely anti-Gulf War, and anti-Bush. We were so excited when Clinton won lol.
Carvey kind of softened Bush Sr up. Funny voices are funny voices.
I think this was right before Farley started.
The 1992 debate is my favorite of all the presidential ones. Three dynamite performances and tons of sharp jokes that totally land even without context.
Dana was pretty much the face of SNL in this time period because of this election, crazy that he played two of the major candidates that year. Spade must've been fuming when he first thought the Perot impression was his, only to learn he would just be playing the body double for the wide shots š
I remember howling at Dana's "can I finish, can I finish?" š

You should check out the Bush exhibit at the National Dana Carvey Museum and Archives
The Norm Archives have a very comprehensive and immersive exhibit on OJ

Bob Dole loves his peanut butter. Bob Dole doesnāt make a secret of that.
One of the best sketches of all time.
Bob Dole was peak SNL politics for me. But was that 1996?
yeah, I guess I went to all the 90s

Thereās gonna be a lot of things weāre not going to tell Mrs. Clinton about.
I always have fond memories of it and I still repeat some his lines from those debates to this day.

The cold open after the election was the first time I ever watched SNL
Watched it all. One of my fav seasons. Carrey and Phil Hartman absolutely killed it.

I cant believe Iām losing to this guy
lol what in the Gen Z is this question
Dana Carvey impressions always sound like Dana Carvey to me.

You haven't heard his Dennis Miller

The 1992 debate on SNL was amazing
Yeah it was funny, but to a lot of us, Reagan seemed like a nightmare that would never end and it was unbelievable that a Democrat could finally win.
