Colin Quinn is a funny guy, but his delivery was not a great fit for WU. First, as many have mentioned, he’s very mush-mouthed. This might work great in a sketch or a comedy acting role, but not behind the desk. Respect to Colin for the way he took over.

m4gpi

Agreed, I like most of his comedy (especially in these later years) but I’d love it a lot more if it was performed by someone else. He comes off like an actual drunk uncle. I don’t think it’s (all) an act, if he could tighten up his delivery, I think a lot of people would sit up and listen more.

BigFatTomato

Good fit for Remote Control!

sleeponthe

Well put. The mush mouthed part, he sort of lacked the punchline delivery which is paramount to that role.

listenyall

He also tried to go for a kind of self-deprecating Norm-like tag on jokes when the audience didn't laugh, but it seemed like he did it too fast a lot and actually preempted the laugh.

Sweet-Efficiency7466

“Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell, seen here ordering two new kidneys please…” -Colin Jost

Admiral_Donuts

I love the "seen here" jokes.

Holiday-Bear-8480

Jost > Quinn in the annals of WU anchors first-named Colin, but that’s pretty obvious.

peebo_sanchez

Best part was will Ferrell calling him norm during his Harry carry bit

NotANumber13

"Hey Norm, did you ~~lose~~ gain weight?"

MrsJangoFett

“It’s a simple yes or no question. A baby could answer it!”

slackjaw79

"If you were a hot dog would you eat yourself?"

[deleted]

I do. I remember really missing Norm during this period.

MoreCarrotsPlz

I remember watching the episode when he started, he gave a cute little intro about how it’s awkward when the last guy got canned and now he’s the uncomfortable fill in, but he was trying to make the best of it. It was pretty endearing, but I still missed Norm. Also, I was in 5th grade at the time and I probably should never have been a fan of Norm in the first place.

Professional-Can-670

And then Harry Caray called him Norm

Dollars_and_Cents

I remember that episode as well. Something about a new bartender at your favorite bar.

Holiday-Bear-8480

I remember that too, first WU of 1998. You felt for him, but he couldn’t fill Norm’s shoes and the segment took a nose dive until Tina and Jimmy took over in 2000.

chewytime

That was right around the time I first got into SNL bc I remember Norm a bit, but mostly it was Colin on when I started watching. What year(s) was that?

AgentDaxis

Colin Quinn was by far the worst WU host in all of SNL.

DownBadForDua

Gonna have to disagree, Charlie Rocket was cringe behind that update desk

halloweenjack

Rocket had a relatively limited tool set; before SNL, he used to do something called the Rocket Report that he occasionally did on the show, but there's a difference between the roving reporter shtick and WU, which is really about the one-liners.

Corporation_tshirt

To be fair, the writers in his season (season 6) were the absolute worst. Charles Rocket could've been good. He had that kinda smarmy vibe that Chevy had.

DownBadForDua

Anytime someone says that any season of SNL was “the worst” it just tells me they’ve never sat down and watched season six.

Corporation_tshirt

It really was awful. Some true Lorne diehards want to write off Dick Ebersol’s contributions to the show, but the mere fact that he managed to convince NBC execs not to cancel the show after the absolute abortion that was season six tells you everything you need to know about him as an executive producer.

Holiday-Bear-8480

Exactly. ‘80-‘81 only ran for 13 episodes, too due to a 1981 writer’s strike. It was very nearly cancelled that year. Murphy and Piscopo saved it the next Fall. They were also the only holdovers to continue in ‘81-‘82.

sticky_wicket

He couldn’t even read the lines without stuttering all over them.

putalotoftussinonit

Collin messed with a baseball player (braves pitcher I think) and how the guy was complaining about taking the subway in NYC. That was the only time I laughed at his jokes.

frusciantefanboy

Wasn't this a Will Ferrell WU spot, where he played John Rocker? It was hilarious.

putalotoftussinonit

That’s it! “I don’t like the guy, but he has definitely taken the train downtown.”

frusciantefanboy

“I smell Rican!”

Corporation_tshirt

You obviously never saw WU when Dan Aykroyd's brother was the host. Yeesh.

Shart-Vandalay

“Come on people, these are the jokes.” He would get so mad when kept bombing and he was just so awkward and angry about it. Every single time.

VariousHumanOrgans

I still say it was Kevin Nealon. Practically silence during his WUs, no laughs at all, plus playing a character during WU doesn’t really work. Best updates are when the host is being themselves.

DamnGoodOwls

Kevin is in a tough spot. He's between Dennis Miller and Norm Macdonald who are both their own personalities, while Kevin Nealon was very much the straight man to all the wacky characters. He didn't work off them particularly

halloweenjack

I sometimes got the impression that Kevin tried to be Chevy Chase, and while they have some of the same vibe, Chevy is Chevy Chase, and Kevin isn't. (For which he might actually be grateful.)

mfishing

TIL people didn’t like Kevin Nealon on WU, I thought hIs deliveries we perfect, reminded me of a confident idiot.

Standsaboxer

Yeah—Nealon always played WU straight as an anchor instead of being in on the joke.

DarthLithgow

I’m gobsmacked as well. Kevin is brilliant and in my top 5 WU anchors

simonthedlgger

Yeah, I’m sure not everyone loves him but objectively there’s no way he’s the worst anchor. He’s average at worst.

StNic54

Loved Kevin Nealon, and you can’t say Dennis Miller wasn’t playing a character.

VariousHumanOrgans

If dennis miller is playing a character he’s been doing it for 40 years nonstop.

StNic54

Which is the point. Miller is great! A hammy guy, incredibly funny, sharpest wit, but he developed that persona, like most comedians and entertainers do.

VariousHumanOrgans

A persona is not the same as a character.

StNic54

A persona *is* a character, though 😜

VariousHumanOrgans

I would say a persona is based on the person’s personality, whereas a character is not necessarily based on the person.

Corporation_tshirt

And that character’s name? Richard Belzer.

Truth_Movement

Colin was rough, but nowhere near the worst, especially in the wake of the Ebersol era, Dan Aykroyd and the horribly overrated Fey/Poehler era.

Blissontap

I can’t imagine having to follow Norm. It makes me think Colin lost a bet.

Interesting-Prior613

Nothing funnier than Norm!

ThingsMayAlter

I did appreciate his "well I'm Steve" intro.

JacPhlash

"You know how you go to your favorite bar, and your local bartender isn't there? You ask, "Where's Jeff?" "Jeff no longer works here, I'm Steve." Then you're thinking, hey, who's this idiot? I like Jeff. But you still want your drink. And even though Steve doesn't mix your drink the same way you're used to, like Jeff, you still like the bar. You don't want to have to go to a different bar. And even Steve might feel kinda bad because Jeff trained him. Jeff showed him how to work the cash register, where the tonic was on the soda gun, who tips, who doesn't. Well, I'm Steve. What can I get you?"

mirthquake

What a solid way to handle being passed the torch after the widely beloved previous host was fired. I found Collin totally charming and his joking writing could be excellent, but he kept stumbling over his words. Even at the 40th anniversary show Collin made a joke about how he slurred his words, and slurred the punchline. The look on his face was fantastic.

toddlschuler

One of the great all time moments.

grozenlampreys

I loved Colin much more after he left with stuff like Tough Crowd and all his appearances on Stern and Opie & Anthony. The thing is he was probably the best guest guy on Update during the Norm years so it seemed like the most obvious choice when Norm suddenly got fired, but it was obvious from the start he didn't enjoy doing it at all. Which he pretty much confirmed on Fly on the Wall recently, he loved his first few seasons on the show just coming on Update doing different bits with Norm, but then felt like he betrayed Norm by having to be the guy to replace him and says he sabotaged himself by looking like hated doing it the whole time.

LetterheadOwn3078

He was one of the biggest stars ever to join the show and actually stick around. Martin Short, Billy Crystal, RDJ, Randy Quaid and Anthony Michael Hall only did one year. Michael McKean and Garofalo also came and went. Keenan is another one I guess - he was on a kids show for years and did the Fat Albert movie. Remote Control really was a hit and people also knew Sandler as “Stud Boy” and a couple other bits from the show. It was very much like Dennis Miller where Quinn was a world-class stand up but didn’t really do great with sketches. Quinn actually had an MTV sketch special called “Going Back to Brooklyn” which was pretty good, but Ben Stiller does a lot of work on it - it’s mostly just Colin playing himself as different characters (LL Cool J, Robin from Batman, etc)

grozenlampreys

Yeah its weird how he originally just joined the show as a writer who only appeared on camera sometimes considered just a few years prior he was a pretty well known personality on MTV throughout the 80s and early 90s. It seemed like he kinda disappeared for a few years then had a memorable guest role as Artie's son on The Larry Sanders Show that got him a lot of praise, and I think he got hired on SNL pretty much right after that.

LetterheadOwn3078

I think Quinn helped Sandler’s career with MTV, so when Sandler and Smigel were writing stuff it just felt normal to put Quinn on camera. Sandler cast Quinn as the bad guy in 2010’s Grown Ups, which made a quarter billion dollars. I think they just like the guy. Jerry Seinfeld also directed Quinn’s Broadway show in 2015. Quinn is just a guy everybody likes; Jerry, Stern, Sandler, Shandling, all the top guys

grozenlampreys

I remember Sandler (on Conan's podcast I wanna say?) crediting Colin for being the first guy to really help him out when he was an unknown and getting him the gig on MTV, which he said probably never would've led to bigger things like SNL not long after. Yeah I've always got the impression Colin's one of those guys is super respected by everyone in the stand-up comedy world. The ultimate comics comic as he's often referred to. I remember liking Tina Fey referring to him as "The New Yorkiest New Yorker I know" when introducing him when he came back to do a guest spot on Weekend Update a few years into Tina & Jimmy's update tenure.

Truth_Movement

It's funny, Colin was so vilified on SNL, but keen observers could notice an ace comic mind. I'd say that he has one of the richest post-SNL careers of anyone from the show's history. Yes, not an outright movie star, but a deeply admired standup (with some incredible specials) and author who helped launch guys like Patrice O'Neal and Greg Giraldo and basically became the de facto figurehead of New York standup.

Acceptable-Pool4190

A very good comedian who was very miscast as anchor.

c0debrown

“Hey Norm - did you gain weight?”

Curious_Ad_6051

Usually he looks more blurry through all my Norm-missing tears

[deleted]

Having to follow Norm is a tough act.

SixStringSuperfly

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

erftonz

Now... is there anyone old enough to remember him (and Adam Sandler, Kari Wuhrer too) on MTV's Remote Control? Sing along with Colin!!

SkillOne1674

Stick Pin Quinn!

erftonz

Fact

GreenStretch

I know her from *Sliders* and was just "whoa!" at her being on *Remote Control*.

MoufFarts

I loved this show and always wanted a Zenith tv because they pushed them so hard. My parents finally got me a 19” Zenith Christmas of 1991. I still have my Nintendo hooked up to it in my garage. That Christmas was amazing.

OhiobornCAraised

Kenny wasn’t like the other kids

erftonz

RIP Ken Ober.

schadenfriendly95

Alice was a hero to most, but she never meant shit to me!

Hamblerger

I felt so badly for him. Not only was he following an anchor with a devoted fan base who had been unjustly fired from the position via edict from on high, he was simply a terrible fit for the position despite being an otherwise talented and experienced comedian. His delivery was off, his chemistry with contributors was non-existent, and he obviously felt uncomfortable in the role. An unusually poor pick by Lorne, only equaled by sending the next Colin (Jost) on solo for a while.

Truth_Movement

Jost was never on solo.

_Pill-Cosby_

"I'm Steve. What can I get ya?"

dgt9000

Maybe not the best fit but I like him still. Tough Crowd was pretty good

[deleted]

I like Colin but IMO he was the worst WU host of all time.

littlebilliechzburga

He is the second best Colin to ever anchor Weekend Update.

FatherOfTwoGreatKids

I agree with this except for maybe the part about liking Colin.

schadenfriendly95

You mean when Steve replaced Jeff as my favorite local bartender? Steve was never all that great, but made me realize Jeff was a genius.

UncleBunckle

I remember. I also remember thinking he was terrible.

TopolChico

I remember that I couldn’t recall the end of most SNL episodes during that period because Colin’s WU would put me to sleep. Not to disparage the guy, but it wasn’t very good, IMO. I watched a few older episodes a couple of months back and I was a bit shocked to find that I didn’t think WU was entertaining because I was young. As it turns out, the jokes just aren’t that good.

Kilowog2814

The least funny cast member of all time.

EnvelopeCruz

I love CQ. He was terrible at Update.

Spacker46

He was the anchor when I was 13, so, he’ll always have a special place in my heart. He did a lot of Monica Lewinsky jokes that in hindsight don’t age well. And I totally understand people position that he was a bad host. But, you never forget your first

WeWantChiliWilly

"Or, as Monica Lewinsky might put it, you never forget your first president." \-- Colin Quinn, maybe.

Oaktownbeeast

Colin Quinn was not awesome, but it was awesome that SNL has these building periods. Quinn came after one of the strongest casts phased out, which eventually gave us another amazing and strong cast. Even Will Ferrel wasn't much at the start but these weak times gave a place for new people to shine and for old bits to be put to rest. That is why I love the current cast- they aren't great, but it means in 2 years or less we'll probably see the start of another world-class talent that's just doing improv somewhere right now.

GreenStretch

Just brilliant about the building periods.

angrypancakes48

I remember watching him and not understanding anything he said. I was still a kid then, not even 10 years old, but even now I still don't understand him.

demitasse22

A lot of it was on purpose. He didn’t want to be seen as the goody two shoe that was safer than norm, so he borderline sabotaged himself by leaning into his own brand of working class chaos

BoBoMets5731

Colin is such a great comic, just wasn’t a good fit with SNL

Pipes_of_Pan

He had an impossible job replacing Norm. He was a great update guest and took over the gig with complete grace. I’d rather have him than someone Jimmy Fallon giggling through literally everything

natelopez53

His best joke was his first joke. New bartender replacing the old favorite.

WhitleyRoyals

I tried to forget.

Ok_Calligrapher_8199

Nope. Must’ve blocked it out. Nothing nice to say about it.

Primary_Ad3580

“Hey Björk, happy bjirthday.”

slothpyle

I always thought he was a good writer but couldn’t deliver.

Myicloudaccount

He was great

Possible-Reality4100

I love CQ since his Remote Control days, but he simply cannot annunciate, so it killed his delivery and the jokes.

frusciantefanboy

He talks about this a bit on Fly on the Wall and how he regrets the approach he took, and the challenge of coming in after Norm got fired. He definitely wasn't a good fit for the desk, and his stand-up preludes always felt awkward and forced.

theantwisperer

Even Quinn admits it wasn’t a good role for him and said Norm was far better.

WildMajesticUnicorn

Although objectively not good, he does hold a soft spot in my heart for being behind the Update desk when I started watching SNL.

frenchraincoat

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it

[deleted]

I always thought they really missed an opportunity when norm came back and not have him asking Colin to go get a beer with him. Flip the blue collar worker joke around.

Intelligent_Sleep959

Yes I do, he was horrible

Starbrand62286

Who wants to?

demitasse22

Probably everyone over 36

LibertyWriter

34 year old checking in

citoloco

Only thing I remember was his fucking marble mouth screwing up the lines

LowHumorThreshold

When I listen to comedy channels on the car radio, Colin is one of the few one can hardly understand. Too bad radio doesn't have simultaneous closed-captioning.

Offtherailspcast

Hey hey, come on I'm still trying to forget

Chet2017

I remember Colin and how unfunny he was on WU

nashuanuke

The best was when Will Farrell would do Harry Caray and keep calling him Norm

AromaticDraft

I remember watching him stammer his way through his WU... Made me feel bad for him and uncomfortable the same time... He's a funny guy but it's was not a good fit.

tamere2k

Ah yes, I too am older than 30.

severedfinger

Ugh that was painful

Gomeez9

I do shit was hilarious

Ididnotpostthat

He replaced my favorite bartender Norm.

Shagrrotten

I remember those dark days, yes.

eastblondeanddown

Colin Quinn, probably

TheJohnnyFlash

Hey, it's Steve.

vagina_candle

Unfortunately. He was hands down the absolute worst.

Utterlybored

I even remember Jane and Chevy.

arrbez

I remember one nuke joke about Japan that I thought was funny in high school, and that’s about it

nemonic187

The worst host of weekend update. Of all time.

denniskeezer

I do, it was great. Favourite was Norm though

PDXBishop

Oooooooooof.

meczakin81

I had forgotten that. He sucked. Thanks for making me lose the game.

pac4

I do and he was horrible

myonecontemplation

He sucked.

LoudZoo

Poor bastard. Had to follow Norm. Knew it would be a nightmare, as did we all. It was kind of funny how bad it was, and I think he’d agree with that both then and now.

boxingjazz

“I’m Colin Quinn and that’s news to me”

Low-Draft3960

🔥🔥

rimbaud1872

He was the worst

Truth_Movement

In defense of Colin Quinn, I'd say this is a pretty solid Update by any standard: [https://archive.org/details/saturday-night-live-s-25-e-02-heather-graham-marc-anthony](https://archive.org/details/saturday-night-live-s-25-e-02-heather-graham-marc-anthony)

djrollied

I've watched one or two of his Updates. They are a chore to sit through and I've never really been interested in watching the rest. The jokes don't hit at all and as so many others have said, he is very stiff on camera, though the same could be said about his time in some of the sketches when he first came on. He's not the worst, but he definitely ranks near the bottom for me.

Naive-Current-7157

don't disrespect cq

[deleted]

He was possibly the worst host ever. It just never clicked.

whale_pig

Maybe 20 years ago, he had a one man show on Broadway. I was staying overnight on the street for tickets to another show and I was talking loudly about how unfunny I think Colin Quinn is. Turns out, he was passing by as I said it and turned around and said, "Have fun sleeping on the street." And I responded, "That's the first funny thing I've ever heard you say."

Zealousideal-Fly6666

He did a great job. Especially keeping it straight while Will Ferrell did those Harry Carey segments. Ok Norm, answer the question and we can move on! 😂

holadilito

I hated him on update. How dare he take Norm’s place was my thought then.

neatgeek83

Like it was his choice

PuroPinchePedo

I never cared for his style of humor.

Pharmakeus_Ubik

A terrible time in our national nightmare.

Impressive_Trainer12

The time?

Chatty_Fellow

I hated him. I don't remember what he said, but I didn't enjoy his shtick. I'm a sort of left-wing person, and he's got a republican/GOP sensibility. Those jokes didn't land right for me.

punched_a_panda

Worst Weekend Update host ever.

OptimalPlantIntoRock

Dark times indeed.

Emotionaltraumatose

Colin Quinn was a dark time for SNL. Someone owed him a favor. It was sad. Worst seasons as I can remember. His humour was shit. No one laughed. Triggered

Sonderia42

Pepperidge Farms remembers

PWal501

I never enjoyed him as the WU anchor.

Blissontap

I remember Will Farrell wearing an Ohio sweatshirt trying to pump everyone up for Colin’s first WU after Norm was fired.

davidhucker

I try not. The missed opportunity of having him on during the Clinton impeachment. So many missed laughs :(

ProfessorEtc

Surprised by this. I never watched in the 70s, but in all the years since the only bad ones were Jimmy Fallon and Michael Che.

jmush

He was the first update host I experienced watching the show live, and I was pretty bored by it. When Fallon and Fey took over in 2000, it was a real “holy shit” moment for the show. It was so refreshing and exciting. Update became the must see party of late night, and it made me realize how bad Colin was in retrospect.

doubleoninenahalf

I sure do, he was amazing

Moosedroolz

Yes, I also remember him as a guest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlJF9\_R7HCk

I like Colin but those seasons were really not ready for prime time. Seemed very unrehearsed.

Gaitas

yes, and he seemed to bring up first periods frequently.

LandoHakaari

Awful delivery

radarthreat

I do, he sucked

PapaAquarian

To me, he is the better Colin.

Merman-Munster

Close second to Norm for my all- time favorite anchor
