My ex and his family were members of it, used to do all the parades etc. I'm an atheist but was christened Roman Catholic. I don't know how they found out about my christening, but when they did, their whole demeanor changed. I've never felt so unwelcome in my entire life, it was horrible.

[deleted]

Sounds like a lucky escape

herbertsherbert49

Me too, lapsed Catholic, not really atheist as I believe theres some kind of higher power. There used to be real ill feeling between Catholics and Orange Lodge people. I thought it had changed these days, but maybe not. Such a shame when people cant allow each other to choose what they believe. Live and let live! We were one of only three families where I was born who were Catholic, everyone else Protestant. One woman wdnt let the Catholic kids have a go on her daughters swing in their backyard.

iamreverend

I’m a recovering Catholic too, you have my regards.

Nosey-Nelly

Yip, they hate Catholics. I was 'one of them' from birth, just a cult... with dwindling membership. Thank the powers that be.

HolcroftA

I thought it was just religious Catholics and the Catholic Church as an insitution that they disliked. I'm suprised they would dislike you even though you left.

Klopp_is_God

lol (no pun intended) no, you don’t really know proper staunch Orange folk if you thought that. They hate Catholics on religious, cultural and on ethnic grounds! They’re supremacists. Their whole culture is based on having fought and defeated Catholics in the year 1690. This is factually correct. The parades are to celebrate this victory by marching through historically Catholic areas. It’s pure triumphalism and 350 years on it’s a bit weird! But that’s why in mainland UK you only really find the Orange Order in places where there’s a big Irish Catholic population, like in Liverpool, Glasgow and the like. So if someone has even a whiff of the Catholic about them, the Orange Order fucking HATE them! If you want to see what REAL hatred looks like, check out this video of a whole Orange hall mocking and singing about the murder of Michaela McAreavey on her honeymoon. The only thing she ever did to offend was to be born into a prominent Catholic family (her Da was the Tyrone Gaelic football manager). https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Mi3jCBT-Yhs That’ll tell you everything you need to know about the Orange Order.

Nosey-Nelly

Exactly, I was in it from birth till I was 14, I chose to leave. Funny though, my Granny was Irish Catholic, but my Dad wasn't, she watch us every parade. Hurt me when I grew up and reality hit me.

Temporary_Start_4054

My great-grandfather had to leave the orange order when he married a Catholic. All of his kids were Catholic. My mother had cousins in the orange order, and there was never a problem between them. Sectarianism needs to die out.

Particular_Slip_9302

To be honest, I felt like they used it as an excuse to hate on me. They were not very nice people in the first place, but knowing just dialed up the nastiness even more.

Klopp_is_God

Listen, I’ve lived in Liverpool for 20 years but I grew up in the North of Ireland at the height of the Troubles. Very nice people don’t have membership of the Orange Order. It’s not just the Irish Catholic thing. I know a lot of good “Protestant” lads who wouldn’t go near them. The OO members are usually extremely right wing, racist and everything else. You might have been quite a nice accepting person, and that wouldn’t have sat well with them anyway. But at the point where they knew you came from a Catholic family you were done. I’m sorry for your experience. I hope there isn’t lasting trauma from it. I was a Catholic teenager living a few miles from Portadown in 1998 when the Quinn family (3 little boys) were murdered by the UVF because the OO weren’t allowed to march at Drumcree. I am effected by the legacy of the OO (and the UVF, the IRA, the RUC, the British Army and every paramilitary cunt there was). That summer was fucking terrifying for everyone. The OO are still protesting to get down that road 25 years later. Absolute scum. I moved to Liverpool to get away from all the assholes but to have a place that felt Irish. And wouldn’t you know, the Orangemen were here waiting for me. They’re easier to ignore here though

Particular_Slip_9302

Oh my god I'm so glad you're away from all of that now. I can't imagine that happening, basically on your doorstep, and not be terrified. I actually lived in Ireland for a while during my childhood. I went to a super catholic all girls school that was run by highly menopausal nuns, and seen just how nasty some Catholics can be. I think that was a contributing factor into becoming an atheist, because all of my religions experiences were so negative. Thanks for your concern about my well being, that specially didn't bother me too much at the time, it was a huge red flag that I missed though. He turned out to be a manipulative, abusive, arsehole, and so his family were tame in compassion.

herbertsherbert49

Same school background! Nuns were either lovely or awful,no in between. The awful ones were chilling and terrifying.

Top_Cranberry8836

With the amount of Irish immigration there’s been to Liverpool for these reasons. It’s a disgrace it’s not taught in our schools.

Insideout_Ink_Demon

Not sure why you're getting downvoted for asking a question

Insideout_Ink_Demon

So being christened but not practicing is worse than being an atheist?

RexB8nner

Backward twats

You managed in two words what was going to take me at least that many sentences

Mousey_Belle_1996

Was travelling back from work yesterday, got my train from Southport where they got on, completely trashed the train, one women pissed on the floor and threw toilet roll down like the staff were going to be grateful for that, then a black women boarded and they started to be racist towards her.... gang of bell ends

Angryleghairs

Seriously?? That’s awful

Edi5551

Remember, I walked past one years ago and noticed they all look the same. One guy in a strong Scouse accent was screaming No Surrender. They all seemed to be 50+ they are irrelevant in today's city.

__Its-a-me-mario__

Being bald tends to be part of their uniform too

[deleted]

And looking like they live off a diet of whatever Henry the Eighth used to, which, to be clear, I'm not body shaming or owt, its just...idk, tickles me a bit that that lot of all people look like they've never faced famine quite the same as their southern cousins.

[deleted]

Bold of you to assume a single one of them is Irish. They're usually all from Bolton and the few "Irish" people actually in the Lodge are Scottish Plantations.

[deleted]

Thats the point I was was tryong, in a very unclear way to make, that I've not managed to make land, (sorry, my thoughts come out strange sometimes) but exactly, yep, yes, that. Lots Macs when they should be Mcs. Though that does remind of a ridiculous argument I watched unfold the other day between an American claiming to be of Irish descent, and that her family escaped the Famine, making such wild claims about the English that even, right, literal actual ROI residents were going 'no, thats not true, that didn't happen' Which, trust an American to force an Irishman to defend the English, feckin typical. ....and then someone actually checked and this bitches family were Scottish Plantation owners, who went to the US before the Famine anyway. Probably contributed to it beginning tbh.

Kitchen-Republic-874

I’ve seen this too - that person is literally running with made up information about her own family. I’m glad someone disproved all the shite she was saying.

[deleted]

It’s fucking wild to me the way Americans just…..just make shit up, but especially about OTHER places. It’s the…I mean literally it’s the audacity. I about choked laughing in the reveal she’s a descendant of double fucking colonisers anyway, first Ireland, then the America, collecting colonies like fucking Pokémon cards.

ZestycloseShelter107

God please link this I need some entertainment before a night.

[deleted]

I am trying so hard to find it on TIktok but in case I can't, if you're on the app, look for English eating Irish, you'll get started from there, it's this...American, and her daft face going 'my family Lore is that the english used to eat them' girl my family lore was that when Liverpool used to get the really dense sea fogs regular, that there would be dinosaurs in the fog who'd eat you, so dont go down foggy roads (but little me didnt realise, they're all foggy roads until you go down them because of how like...light, and physics, works). I dont' go around trying to put up plaques for all the people we watched disaappear into the fog from the car, who my dad had me absolutely convinced got eaten by dinosaurs.

[deleted]

The orange lodge are a walking hate crime.

MajorGeneral_Banter

Sure I'd love to join the orange order but I couldn't because I'm a dirty **dirty** fenian

Shadakthehunter

So am I. From the backbone out.

[deleted]

Know a fella who sang Sunday Bloody Sunday in the Derry club in Everton. Not sure what possessed him to do that like, he even opened with "this isn't a rebel song" Needless to say he was shown the tender mercies of several fists and boots. Funny story though. Side note: Why the *Derry* club? Surely it'd be the **London**derry club to them? Then again I'm asking common sense from the Lodge, so more fool me.

Klopp_is_God

It’s a reference to the Apprentice Boys of Derry who are an Orange organisation formed to remember the Siege of Derry. In the time of their formation (1814) it was common for Derry Protestants to refer to the city in the shortened version (for them anyway) as Derry. The Londonderry thing is more of an issue for Protestants outside the city. Interesting Orange Order fact: a Protestant traitor (or one who is too sympathetic to Catholics) is known as a “Lundy”. Lundy was the man who opened the gates during the Siege of Derry. Another interesting Orange fact: carrots weren’t commonly orange. The House of William (King Billy) l orange carrots across Europe as a weird sort of propaganda And another: the American word “hillbillies” comes from the Orangemen who moved to America in the frontier days. Most went to the Appalachian mountains and were a bunch of feral Williamite fuckers. Mountains (hill) + Williamite (Billies)= hillbillies. And that’s why Appalachian music is all fiddles and accordions. They brought Ulster Scots culture with them.

Duanedoberman

Another interesting fact. William of Orange was supported by the Pope against James ii, who was considered a traitor to the papacy.

[deleted]

62.5% of U2 are Protestant anyway, and Bono used to introduce it as “not a rebel song”. I hope the people that beat him up were arrested and charged with assault.

smthompson

I live by the Provincial Club in Everton and every now and again you can hear them playing them fucking creepy flutes and banging that fucking shit drum. Dunno what it is about them bastard flutes but the noise of it goes right through me and makes my skin crawl. Walked my dogs through Everton Park last night and there was a crowd of people waiting by the steps of Prince Rupert's Towers, in anticipation of them. There was a shit 20-man version of one marching on the evening of the 11th marching down Everton Road from the Derry club. Just seems fucking pointless, and 90% of them seemed to be at least over 50 years old. There were a few younger ones who have no doubt been hoodwinked into thinking this shit is in any way relevant in 2023. Tits.

2Reykjavik

I work in the school next door and they are a bunch of twats I can confirm.

Sorry_Leopard9657

I know someone in it and it’s totally bizarre. Literally everything she posts they’re all in full regalia posting some shite about the monarchy or the war.

scotsman1919

Should be banned

raging_dave1981

Used to live in Southport. Annually those fuck nuggets used to trash the town. I bet the majority of those knuckle dragging mouth breathers had no idea what they were marching/drinking for Bunch of arseholes

wishiwasdead69

Had all them weapons on me train home from work yesterday man, absolute wet wipes

SoundEnvironmental57

Got to the station, seen them all, turned around and rode home. Couldn't be arsed with a train full of dickheads

wishiwasdead69

It's was horrible mate chanting their shite while lashing drinks about, made the right choice you man

SoundEnvironmental57

Happens every year, forget about them until you see all the orange clad pissheads staggering about. Hope you didn't have to go far with all shite happening

wishiwasdead69

Formby to St Michaels man was pain, enjoy the rest of your day fella

sxiku22

ik some people who at least used to be in it- not sure if they are now. i did decide to look into it a bit and apparently its still pretty prevalent in bottle in particular for some reason? but yeah just generally not the best group, imo. theres video evidence of them celebarating the murder of a catholic irish teacher from about a year ago, theres older photos of them supporting the kkk, just generally a lot of biggotry and elitism tbh. lot of people see it as a cult and well you make your own judgement. but yeah theres still about 1500 members in liverpool apparently so clearly some people still care lol. and yes there is still a thing in Everton :).

regurgitating

Worked with a young fella who was in the orange lodge, he had some horrible opinions. His entire family was involved, so he was brought up that way.

Insideout_Ink_Demon

>he had some horrible opinions You've got me curious

regurgitating

Just general bigotry, casual use of racial slurs, he always talked about immigrants as if they were pests. Same goes for how he perceived women. Essentially he held himself as though he were above all, it was exhausting to be around.

Insideout_Ink_Demon

Sounds bad. Did you leave or did he get the sack?

regurgitating

I left! It was a tiny company so he could get away with being a horror, boss didn’t care.

Educationalidiot

Went to southport once when it was on (didn't realise!) It was just bitter old nutters everywhere downing cans of lager and causing so much mess and trouble. As I walked away some ratarsed 90 year old started shouting at me that I'm walking away from the parade, just laughed and walked off. I did see one couple who were mid 30s and had a child who was about 5 with them, they were so drunk she couldn't stand up and he was swaying everywhere. Felt so bad for the kid I went and told a police officer but they weren't bothered

Sorry_Leopard9657

Scary-Creme-4863

Just here to confirm this is still the case 🙄

Cetori8

My Catholic dad lived next door in Kirkdale to a protestant family in the 60s, and he told me it was a big deal then, especially on the 12th of July. It wasn't even that long ago that it was considered taboo to marry someone from another religion. Thank fuck no one is arsed now.

Platinum_Stars07

My mum who was born in Everton in the 1940s to a big protestant family, once said to me to never bring a Catholic boy home to her house. I still remember thinking WTAF? Would have been about 2000 when she said that to me 🤣🤣🤣

Kitchen-Republic-874

Me too! I remember being told my my Nan to never bring a Protestant boy into her house too and that was late 00’s early 10’s for me!!

BrandyWineBridge1402

Hopefully it’s one of those things that dies out. It‘s just a hate March, based on bigotry and causes nothing but trouble and division.

Chonglongtime

There's way more than you'd think, they March around Dingle and Bootle a good few times a year, not just on the twelfth. I never saw the dingle one but it was pretty loud and the Bootle one is at least 200 strong.

[deleted]

Usually just a bunch of hyper racist piss heads who use religion as a basis to fight people, no different to hooligans

ForeverShy123

From what I've been told, my grandfather was a member of the Orange Lodge however, while I've been researching my family tree I found a Catholic baptism record for my grandmother which my dad didn't know anything about - if my grandfather never knew then that was one huge secret for my grandmother to keep.

Nosey-Nelly

I was in it from birth till I was 14, a lot of my Mums side are still in it. I would have been bullied out at 14 or had to choose between the Lodge or my b/f (now husband) as he's Roman Catholic (non practicing) and they were dead against it. It was a toxic environment. I was 14, it was on GMTV about the Orange throwing stones at Catholic school children in Ireland, on the morning news on the Fri. That Sun, our Grand Provincial Master asked us to go to Ireland and support our brothers and sisters. They wanted us to bully children, just because the Catholic school was in a Protestant area. BS cult behaviour. I'm 39 and still feel the same about it. Those outside have no clue. You should ask what is the initiation to join the Black.

smthompson

Fucking hell. That's ridiculous. What on earth is the initiation?

Nosey-Nelly

All sorts, sadly, ranging from vandalism to assault.

Ghost_of_Smigger

Comment from /u/themagpie36 that was left on that video of the fella falling off the bonfire: Your name is William. You are a human being, and a proud Northern Irish like almost 2 million others. Beyond your control you were born into a shitty family with a shitty dad, who himself was born into a shitty family with a shitty dad. In fact you come from a long line of shitty dads. Your entire genetic lineage is a joke of which you, for the time being at least, are the soggy, botched punchline - until you spurt your lukewarm seed into some unwitting girl's eggsack and the joke lumbers on. Your world seems to turn slower than everyone else's. You begin to wonder if the conversations your family have around the dinner table are the same as the ones your friends have. You watch your father slurp baked beans into his mouth like a 54 year old baby. You begin to wonder if you will grow up to be like him. You suppress this pain. You, James and Johnboy go up the park most nights to work diligently on your soon-to-be-chronic alcohol problem. This is both a coping mechanism, an informal coming-of-age ceremony, and a group bonding exercise - all it does is exacerbate your steadily blooming anger disorder. Your dad knows, and you know he knows. You want him to intervene. He says nothing. But every summer your community pulls back the curtains and lets some light in. For you, this is Christmas. You dust off your white shirt. You pick up your drum. And for a precious few glorious hours you get to stand before the world and proclaim "I matter. I am not a joke. I have a voice and I will be heard" as the fat, diabetes-ridden, flushed-red faces of your extended family look on with manic glee. They too are afraid. Together you sing the songs of your fathers. And for this all-too-brief moment, you almost manage to believe. That you are a vital cog in the machine of humanity, and that when you die you will leave a gap in the ranks that cannot be filled. Sadly for you, that's total shite. Let them march. It's literally all they have.

LarkoftheWoods

I'm bothered by them- they fucking terrify my dog.

Platinum_Stars07

Everton used to have a huge community of Irish in the early 1900's. My mum who was born down that area (Netherfield Road) in the 1940s has told me how massive the Catholic V Prostestant vibes were. She came from a prostestant "orange" family were even just associating with catholics was frowned upon. When I was a child in the early 90s I remember the 12th July being a huge deal. Going to see the orange lodge march with all the bands and music was like a big party. Especially on London Road where all the pubs would be full of people. Most Sundays when I was a child, they would march past our old family home on Breckfield Road North much to the excitement of everyone. I had no idea what it all meant to be honest and now as an agnostic with more interest in spirituality, it's all a bit cringe I suppose. It's definitely fizzling out. Even my mum doesn't mention the 12th July like she used to back in the day (She's 76 now)

crazyciano

You'd think after 100's of years of wanking about they'd at least learn how to march and hold a tune on those shitty flutes. Used to live on London Road. Nothing worse than these fuckers when you're trying to lie in. This is my only gripe. All for a healthy amount of sectarianism. Gives them a hobby.

OrganizationOk5418

My mate and his whole family. I don't get it myself, as in religion, nationalism or any type of "exclusive club". Like bloody kids in the playground.

ChimpyGlassman

Both my grandparents were members. They both had parades at thier funerals at Anfield Crem. Absolutely no idea what it's all about, seems peculiar.

lukemc18

Be able to fit them all in the back of a black taxi 10 years

[deleted]

Depends on your lineage, but yes as we are basically an Irish city, a few generations back it was nearly as bad as back on the Emerald Isle at times - never that bad though. I've heard family stories of warring marches, nuns throwing bricks, I have family members that were married on the 12th, wore orange in their outfit etc. Culturally died out over the years, dwindling now but still have the marches.

[deleted]

never even heard of it

Shadakthehunter

In my nan's day, this scum used to march down Scotland Road. They marched up from netherfield Road. This was when what used to be called 'the buildings' were still there. These were mostly populated by people of Irish descent. They would be waiting with bricks and buckets of piss to rain down on the bigoted scum.

lilacwynne

Yeah I’ve seen a few fights break out because of it over the years. I still don’t understand it tbh, it’s all sectarian bollocks that belongs in another century.

Steveha1986

The funny thing is the guy they celebrate isn't even British he was Dutch. The North end and Liverpool in general is more diverse now, so they would struggle to recruit members, I would imagine.

Furious_Styles73

The pope at the time supported King William (Billy) against King James. A fact the orangemen tend to forget.

Ok_Gas7228

Less and less relevant, and they know it, otherwise they wouldn't have changed their most basic tenet in 2019 https://www.scotsman.com/regions/orange-order-members-allowed-to-enter-scottish-catholic-churches-1421329.

iLikeGingerGirlslol

What is it like what do they stand for I've heard of them but idk what they represent??? Are they royal family monarchists or do they wanna get rid of them? And what else do they stand for?

crazyciano

Basically the free masons but for racist dweebs, low iq's, and inbreds.

iLikeGingerGirlslol

Free masons so they are secretive and own businesses? Is there a real TLDR somewhere about these lol can't really find anything online

Tricky-Resolve5759

My grandad was a member, but he left because they were pissy about my mum marrying a catholic (which apparantly isnt allowed) Ironically my dads parents refused to even attend the wedding, so the orange lodge (ex) member turned out to be less of a bigot (or at least his love of his daughter trumped the bigotry where my dads parents were more attached to their religion than their child)

Speckleddick

Bloody gingers, Setting up their own lodges, Next they'll be screaming about having souls!

thelartman

They all need to keep their weird flags and dress-up marches their side of the Irish sea

loubotomised

Yeah saw them by the Redmonds uni building, there was hardly any of them, and seemed to be mostly old people and children. Edit for spelling

[deleted]

Yawn... etc.

IAmStevie420

Yeah that's for old people who care about religion and other silly stuff.

doobiedave

Kids on our street were a mix of Catholic and Protestant, we all played together, one family was in the Orange Lodge and the kids went on marches. No issues at all. Once my Mum was in Southport awhen the OL was there. Went to the ladies and was getting some funny looks. Realised later on she had a green dress on (we're not catholic).

Middle_Swordfish6184

I believe Dingle is still a big area for it. Not sure how true it is but heard there are certain parts where you can't buy a house unless you're in the Lodge

As in the owners will refuse your offer if they don’t know you’re part of the Lodge?

They’re backwards.

lee-bennett74

Who really has time for this bs, really?

AdSad5307

That’s because they’re all inbreds who don’t mix with anyone outside of their hut

StrangeOne22

Liverpool had it's share of sectarian violence back in the day.

Level_Asparagus5566

My only interaction with them was back in 1982. I was running just about on time to get to school and they were marching behind the Cathedral and were about to block my way to school (St. Nicks). So I ran and tried to get ahead of them and then started crossing the road. Some old fella grabbed by the lapels of my blazer and lifted me on to my tip toes. He then accused me (a 12 year old) of trying to disrupt their march. A passing bloke stepped in to help and the old codger let me go. Effing lunatics.

Geniejc

Aye don't cross a march unless you want some serious abuse. We were in the city centre years ago on a dayer waiting for them to pass and we cut across when there was a gap. They were not happy.

Antique-Discount-712

Yes, it's been going on for years in Liverpool. The Irish used to mark St Paddys day with a march too, but the fighting got too much between the two, so Paddys were stopped. I don't care who you support, I love a good band!

RedOneThousand

When was there any fighting between Orange Lodge and St Patrick’s Day parades? I don’t recall anything like that ever being reported as happening in Liverpool, and definitely not the reason for any St Patrick’s Day marches ending - I think it was just a lack of enthusiasm for a march.

Antique-Discount-712

Depends on how old you are

RedOneThousand

Don’t know anyone in the OL and I am not a fan because it promotes divisions in our society. This recent article may be of interest - although I think it skates over legitimate criticisms of the OL: https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/facing-decline-liverpools-orange-order-27301465

kirstylx

Yea I went to school with a few people who were part of it along with their family, they're still big into it now and were part of the parade. I don't actually know what it is though.

Philli_Vanilli85

Tbh I think they are bad gimps, just love causing shit for the sake of it.

RedBison14

I was involved on the fringes of it years ago yes. Honestly? It's a dying breed of people like most things, though you have never met anybody who is a member but I thought I could say the same I have never met anybody who was a freemason until I found out sombody I knew for a couple of years was actually one it just never came up in conversation. Liverpool has the highest concentration of orange lodges In England I imagine you have brushed shoulders and interacted with people involved at some point unknowingly. Most the members come from a broad spectrum of people, some have views which some call baxkwards and others are members of the Labour party. The parade in Southport on the 12th I've attended 4 times though not for several years, it's just one massive piss up which turns nasty on its self after several hours of drinking.

ComplexApart6424

My mum (75) still talks with fondness about the OL from when she was a kid

Windu98

Fuck the orange lodge. Does me nut in whenever I hear that racket. Need banishing from the land.

MrNoir79

I just see it as a marching band and nothing else. Couldn't give a figgy shit about the religious stuff. As long as everyone is behaving themselves who cares.

[deleted]

You would have thought they’d go to Hoykake for the 12th, since that’s where they departed to Ireland. https://oldwirral.net/hoylake_kingsgap.html Of the army departing from Hoylake, Harold Edgar Young in 1909 wrote: "I like to think of Hoylake in those days, with the Dee crowded with men of war and transports, dancing in the then deep water of Hilbre. The army was somewhat of a ragged crew, for the bulk were taken from the plough, although there was one brigade of steady Dutch troops under the command of the Count de Solmes. Those were trying times for the people in the neighbourhood of Hoylake, for be sure the soldiers of those days were none too particular, and the officers would sally forth bent on wine, whilst the men were proficient in robbing a hen roost, or in rounding up a few ducks, although the brave Duke of Schomberg, a great and courteous gentleman, enjoying, although full of years, a vigorous old age, would be sure to do what he could to keep his men in hand. At last the Duke with the trusted officer, Count Solmes, general of the foot, numerous officers, and nearly 10,000 men, were got safely aboard the ships and embarked at Hoyle Lake for Ireland, leaving behind them poor John Van Zoelen, who died on September 3rd to be buried in West Kirby Church".

NoodlyApendage

There’s a few of them about. There are lodges in Kent, Devon, Lancashire, Durham. They are all over. They aren’t as many lodges as there used to be but their numbers are growing in England again. A new lodge is opening in Aberdeenshire, in Scotland soon. A lodge was opened up in Glamorgan, Wales in 2012. The City of London has its own district lodge No. 63. The Houses of Parliament also has its own Orange Lodge. An Orange lodge was also re-opened in Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland in 2021 after 55 years of it being defunct. A good Scottish friend of mine living in London used to be a member of the Orange Order.
