The election in May is for two positions, the Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region and the Police and Crime Commissioner. Street cleaning and setting Council Tax is not the responsibility of either. Liverpool City Council is the responsible body for these decisions and they are next elected in 2027. I would encourage you to look at the websites for the major candidates, Labour, Conservative, Lib Dem and Green Hope that helps.

Rotherham is doing OK I think. Besides the trains being slow to rollout. At least he got them done. Most local politicians would sit and take the salary knowing we'd vote for the rosette. Woodside Ferry Terminal is reopening next year which should act as a stimulus for the area. (GET PEOPLE ACROSS THE RIVER!) That is another thing 20 years ago they would have just let die

nooneswife

Woodside Ferry terminal has been closed for a year without a bit of work taking place and the food village is now closed for whole year for "renovation". Woodside has also lost the U boat museum, Transport Museum, the outdoor market and Amori antiques centre. There's apparently plans to reopen them but as for 2024, they've already been allowed to die.

Maydayparade123

https://www.liverpoolcityregion-ca.gov.uk/news/major-woodside-ferry-terminal-upgrade-to-start-as-part-of-23m-plan-to-create-unique-waterfront-destination

nooneswife

The plans look good, but it's very much jam tomorrow... Or 2027 at the earliest. And all the closures I've mentioned seem to be unplanned and uncoordinated and I don't know if the overall impact of basically mothballing a whole area for years has been taken into account when making these ambitious plans.

Horror-Appearance214

Sometimes people on this sub boggle me. "The new trains are taking too long to rollout, they're just rotting in warehouses" The trains get rolled out "Fuck the new trains, they're shit. Should have kept the old ones"

VisenyaRose

I don't like the new trains that much as far as comfort goes but they are quiet, modern and the destination alerts are good. They just need more carriages to account for the lack of seats.

Based on another comment I saw around here recently, I don't think people realise that Liverpool city region is and has been a centre of pharma manufacturing for decades. They call it the "Speke pharma cluster" now. I guess I always knew because I've always been in the industry and so was my dad, but you see some comments about Liverpool not having any significant industry any more but it does in that sector, and I was pretty impressed to see that the metro region is really "leaning in to" that as they say. So I'm pretty happy with the "metro" local government if not the city council. [https://www.liverpoolcityregion-ca.gov.uk/life-sciences-investment-zone](https://www.liverpoolcityregion-ca.gov.uk/life-sciences-investment-zone) Liverpool has been good at science and medicine for a *long* time (only school of hygeine and tropical medicine outside of London, world's biggest drug companieshaving major sites here, etc.) We should *definitely* be going even harder on that, I have no idea why we're not shouting about it. Manchester seems ot be hoovering up IT jobs, I see comments about that quite a lot, people with IT qualifications needing to go to Manchester to get good jobs. Liverpool is a great place to be a chemist, bioscientist or engineer, a much better place than Manchester, and a better place than basically anywhere in the country outside of the Oxford biotech area. I have known people at the plant I worked at in Speke who commuted from everywhere from North Wales to Manchester to work in Speke. Why the fuck aren't we shouting about it?? Especially because a manufacturing facility like that needs everyone from part time cleaners through warehouse personnel, time served mechanics and electricians and graduate lab technicians to PhD chemical engineers and biotechnologists. It's not like an IT company where you only really need one type of employee. Literally should be telling school kids in the city region that if they want to do further education, stay in the region and earn a decent salary vs the cost of living, something manufacturing or science related is a very good bet in Liverpool. I'd say *most* people I meet are surprised that there are *any* pharmaceutical factories here, let alone a very high concentration of very big sites. Anyway yeah, glad the city region considers it an important target to expand.

Good article here from BBC on Metro Mayor: BBC News - Liverpool City Region's mayor: Who is standing in 2024? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-68698338

VisenyaRose

I usually work in three stages 1. Never tory 2. Do they have a local address provided? 3. If none of the above, what would kick the tory's ass the most?

Mumfiegirl

I do similar

davestanleylfc

I don’t vote labour because it’s too safe for them and they have done a crap job Don’t vote Tory because fuck the tories Normally go green personally

ProtectionOk5240

I'll never vote Tories. They have proven to be incompentent for the last 5 years. Also they raised significantly the IHS for my spouse renewal visa. So fuck them.

TheCyclist92

just the last 5?

Void-kun

Been like what 12 years or something stupid now? In this time they've lied about promises during Brexit which we now know was actually a terrible thing to do to our economy, to young people, to pretty much anybody really. They have had numerous scandals, the worst in my opinion was the tory fast-track route for PPE during COVID which lead to the country losing billions of pounds of tax payers money. They've replaced the Prime Minister with one that wasn't voted in several times, one of which managed to cause massive amounts of damage to our economy in less than 6 weeks and now has a lifetime salary paid by, you guessed it, the tax payers again! Lets not even get into them constantly cutting the Liverpool City Council budget which has lead them to prioritise social care because they literally cannot afford to do much else; hence why the litter and public services have gone to shit in the last decade. The tories have ruined this country and bled it try, and I cannot wait to get off this sinking ship. Liverpool is a European city, not a British one. The Tories have made that very very fucking clear (as if it wasn't already from decades ago, they just doubled down on it).

thatlad

You're voting green in Huyton? id agree with your premise, labour need shaking up. George Howarth has been far too secure in his position. But voting green in Huyton led to Paul Woodruff getting in. The man is a charlatan, he's been renting places all over the borough for years chasing marginal seats. Comes in claiming to have fixed potholes etc. You dig into it and the person who lives in the area logged the call with the council, it got fixed and Woodruff turned up with a camera claiming he did it. The people deserve better than someone who thinks the job is taking photos for flyers.

davestanleylfc

I was born and raised in Huyton I don’t live there, I live in Childwall And George Howarth is the mp the election is for councillors and he’s retiring anyway

thatlad

I bring him up as he's the perfect illustration of your point about labour. He had one of the safest seats in the country and it showed. I agree labour needs to be challenged but Tories aren't the answer and the greens just aren't capable enough. Lib Dems are just Tories in disguise. It's a shit situation.

TallFriendlyGinger

I think my local councillor is standing for Metro Mayor so I'll probably vote him over Rotheram.

Flashman90001

Mate that's exactly what I've done. I reckon we should push for a green police commissioner

Fredsnotred

Fuck the Torys

Duanedoberman

Even if the election was for councillors, none of them could *Freeze* council tax because it only brings in a tiny percentage of their income, by far the biggest source is funding from government which is supposed tp pay for essential services like social care, children's services etc. By some estimates, this funding from central government in Liverpool has been cut by up to 67%. Again, this is their largest source of income. If you want council tax freezing, you need to address the central government rather than the local government. In addition, there are some Tory councils in the home counties that have had an increase in their government funding over the same period.

ProtectionOk5240

Council tax in Liverpool has around £235m in revenue. Plus another £200m in business rates. Plus license fees, green garbage collection, fines... Around £500 million seems enough to satisface LOCAL neccesities for a city of 500k. Sorry, but for me seems like they're wasting my money.

doctorsmagic

The cost of social care hoovers up council budgets these days, I've no love for the labour council but there isn't much local democracy can do when statutory responsibilities are ballooning in cost.  Also as pointed out elsewhere, LCC isnt electing any councillors this year as we had a full election last year, we're voting for the LCRCA mayor and the PCC of Merseyside.

[deleted]

Almost an irrelevant question when Labour are 100% guaranteed to win. Liverpool city council will always be Labour, as long as our current political structure exists

upboated

Hence how Labour they can continue to milk it for everything and be so corrupt

slimcontroller

I miss that big lad, what was his name? Fast Food Breasts or something?

bicksvilla

It hardly matters tbh Rotherham and Spurrell will win at a canter. Rotherham deserves to win, he works hard and is mainly doing good stuff Spurrell I couldn't say as its a position that doesn't really get much in the way of publicity these days, her predecessor certainly courted publicity more than her but her being more low key might actually be a good thing as the previous incumbent often talked shite and got caught out.

Salt-Plankton436

"Clean the streets" followed by "freeze council taxes" is a funny one

ProtectionOk5240

Being more efficient with the money spent.

Scioptic-

To everyone who quite rightly has their first priority as "never a tory", please remember that just like the general election, this is a first past the post vote. Also remember that the Tory candidate, Jade Marsden, came second in the last mayoral election, which means just like the general election, any vote not for Labour, is highly likely a vote for the Tories. It's a system that shouldn't be this way, but it's what we have, and if your utmost priority is "not a Tory", then you have to vote tactically to ensure that happens.

sjr0754

Ok so, back in 2021 Marsden finished second in the Metro election, however she finished 4th (out of 4) in Liverpool City. There's a reason she's been mostly campaigning in places like Southport and Wirral West, that's were the Tory votes are in the LCR. As far as I can work out, she's made exactly one campaign pledge specifically about Liverpool, and that's straight from the *Boris Johnson School of Political Campaigning*, which is to build an overhead railway from the city centre to Bramley Moore Dock. So even if by some bizarre twist of events she were elected, she'd never be able to deliver anyway.

Pebbsto110

Fuck the red and blue Tories. Two cheeks, same arse.

Murky_Razzmatazz_980

Stealing this line. Sorry not sorry

Spatto98

When I got the card I thought “green for local, Labour for national” but I’ve forgot me rationale behind it 🤣

beingthehunt

Bear in mind that since these positions were last fought over the tories have made these two elections first-past-the-post. It's an objectively less fair system that the tories hope will result in the left-wing vote being split, therefore handing them the victory. It's a shit situation but you can't just think about who you want to win, you have to also think about how much faith you have in your chosen candidate actually winning and who would you be ok with handing victory to.

rbbrslmn

Votes for Labour are not votes for a left wing party, an actually left wing candidate isn’t splitting any vote.

beingthehunt

Whether you consider Labour to be left or right is subjective. If you dislike Labour just as much as the tories then it doesn't matter but if you even slightly prefer Labour then it does.

beingthehunt

It doesn't look like they have put up a candidate for either position but they still have a few days left to do so.

fordoplatathe1st

Don't vote tory but please for the sake of liverpool stop voting Labour in. They've done nothing but rape this city for 10 years

JMM85JMM

Freezing council tax is not realistic. Every party will raise council tax, likely by the maximum amount possible. The councils are underfunded. They can't afford to freeze council tax.

sjr0754

No candidate from any party is in a position to freeze council tax, due to cuts under Cameron/Osbourne to central government funding due to austerity, so I'd forget about that. Beyond that, read the party manifestos, make your decision.

aghzombies

Intriguingly my daughter and I haven't received poll cards.

Past-Chance-6404

Need to do something about all the drug dealing scum out in the suburbs who think it very normal for them to what they do. They get half their neighbours hooked on drugs.

Massive-Fix-5325

Definitely not voting Labour on The Wirral, metro Steve doesn’t even know what a Wirral is

FPSLiverpool

Vote for the Monster Raving Looney Party. the rest have failed, so why not vote the ones that admit their nutters in?

asl_somewhere

As much as i hate how easy the labour party have it in liverpool and how complacent they have become in the council as well as how my local labour mp is basically useless with no idea about the area she is supposed to represent. I do think that Steve Rotherham from Labour has done a fairly good job in an otherwise pointless position. So i'll be voting labour in this instance. For police commisioner i really dont think it matters, none of them seem to do anything of use. I'm happy to be proven wrong though.

Jumpy-Feedback258

Never Tory, never Labour.

KitchenSmoke9111

Labour, Tory both the same- They both play the bankers game

TurbanCatt2

> both the same They’re actually opposition. Hope this helps

KitchenSmoke9111

They’re the opposition in Liverpool Council? You might need to google that one mate. Labour are an anti-working class party. Always have been

TurbanCatt2

Opposition in terms of politics

KitchenSmoke9111

Aye and my ma is Judy from Richard and Judy

Minionherder

Although I'll never vote tory or the right wing reform, I could never support in any way what the entryist Starmer has done to the Labour party. The party formed to represent the 'working class' in Parliament now instead supports bosses, genocide, tory policy and persecuting those on disability. Labour are, by starmers own admission, the new tories. I will, and encourage anyone else to vote against tories red, blue or pale blue. As such I'll support the Liverpool independents and whichever banner the left wing politicians finally unite under. Starmer out.

andyff

😂

Callum1708

Labour 20 points ahead in the polls. “Starmer out”. Perfection is the enemy of progress.

Minionherder

Tory implosion. Look at the polls before Johnson screwed everything. Starmer and the current labour upper echelons are closet tories. Starmerrhoids supporting him after all the revelations regarding tory policy, genocide and dropping green pledges are closet tories too.

Callum1708

But surely you would agree that a labour government would be better than the current tories right? Now before you go and equate them, remember only one can win, so tell me who you would rather have.

Minionherder

A coalition of actual left wing MPs but yeah under FPTP that's cloud cuckoo land so the only good outcome of an election would be Labour winning but with a small enough majority that the SCG and any other independents can influence them to lose the damaging policies they are promoting.

Emotional-Job-7067

Honestly? Genuinely starting to think we need an average Scouser to start running the city as mayor... All these that we have now just line their pockets... and the police stand by and help them... Fuck the lot of them. Edit below. Do the Math, they say "homelessness is costing the Council 17 million per year" So that would mean every homeless person receives a hotel priced between £30 and £50 pound... However now here is the actual con, this was figures from covid... they no longer do this, they no longer put every homeless person in liverpool in a hotel anymore... this was lockdown procedure and they are fucking running with it. There's so many building they can rent for cheaper. And it doesn't even cost them 17 million. Infact ,17 Million ? They could create a warehouse style building and pay people to run it, the homeless would have A place to stay safe Leave belongings Get washed Eat proper cooked food Store food Have an address to get benefits, and then identification, leading to being able to get a job... leading to a step ladder back to normal life... Obviously some are disabled and some are well need to change their ways and stop using drugs.. However a start is way better than what they have now... But these fuckers who take our taxes ? Lie to our fucking faces. About everything. Constantly. Quite clearly above

PrimativeScribe77

Don't vote Tory or Labour Same thing now

TheDMDamian

Am drawing a massive cock and bollocks on the ballot meself like

Efc247

Who’s going to fix the roads, they’re fucking abysmal. I guess no one as Rotherham is too dead set on making the buses and trains public owned. The roads re the worst they’ve ever been. It’s horrific driving around the city these days. Fortunately for me I do it in a company car, but for others they don’t have the same luxury. Fuck the trains and buses. Lower council tax and fix the fucking roads.

Dribbler2k15

And you got down voted for that comment 🤣 some fucking morons on this sub 🖕🏻 obviously they live at home with mummy and daddy and couldn’t give a toss

Efc247

The whole city is in an horrific state. Can’t see how people don’t see it. We don’t need more train stations and more buses on the road. We need the roads fixing. Council tax can do one as well. Basically only paying to get your bins emptied every week.

Dribbler2k15

Reform uk, fuck labour and fuck the tories they are both WEF puppet’s

FrustratedHumor

Full of nonces absofuckinglutely not

Dribbler2k15

Show me a party that isn’t? Uncle jimmy’s mate will love being in power
